Michelle Simmons, CEO of Silicon Quantum Computing, is interviewed by Yuval Boger. Michelle's company uses phosphorus atoms in silicon-28 to create high-fidelity, low-noise qubits with exceptional coherence. She highlights their multi-nucleus spin registers for all-to-all connectivity and native multi-qubit operations, achieving what she describes as industry-leading fidelities. We discuss their three products—quantum machine learning, analog simulation, and fault-tolerant quantum computing—and their progress. We also discuss the expected date of their error-corrected system, the key to accelerating their roadmap, and much more.
In this episode of the Critical Oxygen podcast, I am joined again by Coach Michelle Simmons where we discuss the importance of breathing and how it affects physiology and performance. Michelle shares her personal experience of using breathwork to manage anxiety and improve athletic performance. We emphasize the significance of diaphragmatic breathing and its impact on posture, mindset, and oxygen delivery. The conversation also touches on the limitations of breathing incorrectly and the benefits of practicing breath control during high-intensity efforts. We highlight the need for athletes to be aware of their breathing and its potential to optimize performance. I share my personal experience of switching from mouth breathing to nose breathing during low intensity training. While there is limited scientific research on the topic, we speculate that nose breathing may stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a more relaxed state and better performance. They also discuss the adaptability of the pulmonary system and the need for further research in this area. More about Michelle in her words: Personally: I did my first triathlon in 1995! Fell in love with it immediately. I continued to race for ~25 years. I rarely race anymore but I still train bc I enjoy it and want to be healthy and fit enough to train with my athletes at times. In my time, I did 18x Ironmans, including 4x in Kona. Professionally: I started coaching a few friends in 2008. I took every opportunity to learn (still do!) and my coaching business grew to the point where I've been doing it full time for the last 15 years. I am the founder and Head Coach at TeamBSC Triathlon. I work with amateurs of all ages and abilities- some beginners and others who ultimately qualify for the World Champs! I'm actively involved in supporting endurance sports on Oahu. I coach Kailua Masters Swim team, lead a local monthly Girls Ride, and am a board member for Aloha State Bike Racing Association. Sometimes I present educational workshops for local athletes. TAKEAWAYS 1) Breathing plays a crucial role in physiology and performance, and conscious control of breath can help optimize performance. 2) Diaphragmatic breathing, which involves expanding the rib cage and breathing low and slow, can improve posture, mindset, and oxygen delivery. 3) Practicing breath control during high-intensity efforts can help athletes stay calm, focused, and optimize oxygen utilization. Every February, around this time, approximately 8 billion small heart-shaped candies are created and exchanged. These candies bear messages of love and care, and are often used as gifts to express feelings for another person. In each episode featuring a guest, we ask them if there are any words of wisdom they might share with their younger selves. These words of wisdom are like those Sweetheart treats, but instead of representing love for someone else, they are messages of love directed to our guests themselves, and by extension, to all of us. We are so inspired by the wisdom our guests shared, so we put all these beautiful words together, as a little love treat for our listeners. Enjoy! Thank you to our amazing guests for their words of wisdom: Donna Peek, Darren Gold, Leslie McGuirk, Mike Robbins, Susan Olesek, Laila Tarraf, Nichelle Trambell Spellman, Rachel Bitecofer, Bridgette Corridan, Mary Lin McBride, Ali Ingersoll, Cara Jones, David Richman, Chris Pierce, Chris Tsakalakis, Jill Santa Lucia, Forrest Wright, Aisha Ponds, Donna Rhode, Kristin Firpo, Marney Sullivan, Deborah Egerton, Rebekah Rotstein, Daryan Rahimzadeh, Kat Gordon, Kat Williford, Jeff Slater, Bryan Gillette, Oneika Mays, Vanessa Loder, Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Sarah McDonald, Mary Felice, Shelly Tygielski, Joe Walsh, Rebecca Ward, Nicole Swiner, Natalie Grumet, Marti Grimminck, Ava Lashay, Maureen Aarons, Josh Izenberg, Trish Hegarty, Kim Hunter, Ashleigh Parker, Chris Hendricks, Danny Rosin, Michelle Simmons, Katherine Kennedy, Tony Lillios

From the outside looking in, it would be easy to assume Michelle Simmons is invincible. She is an 18-time IronMan athlete (including 4 times at the world championships), has run countless half triathlons and has coached other athletes to triathlon successes. Even when cancer struck at age 25, Michelle never skipped a beat, keeping a super positive attitude and staying focused on getting past her treatment and back to competing. But during her cancer treatment, there was a seed planted that would fester and then rear its head 20 years later. Almost to the day of her original diagnosis, Michelle was sure there was something seriously wrong. There was something wrong, just not what she thought. And no amount of athleticism or positive attitude could help. Her ultimate savior? Writing down her story. Listen in to hear Michelle's perfectly imperfect journey. Bio Michelle Simmons is an esteemed endurance coach, athlete, and inspirational mentor with over 15 years of experience in triathlon coaching. As the founder of TeamBSC Triathlon in Hawaii, she has dedicated her career to helping athletes achieve their full potential by fostering a blend of physical preparedness and mental resilience. A graduate of Arizona State University, Michelle's academic background laid a solid foundation for her initial career as a classroom teacher. Her five-year tenure in education honed her skills in communication, leadership, and motivation—skills that would prove invaluable as she transitioned to full-time coaching. Michelle's expertise is not just theoretical. Her credentials include competing in 18 Ironman races, with four appearances at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. However, her personal athletic achievements are just part of her story. After overcoming a cancer diagnosis at the age of 25, Michelle faced a prolonged battle with anxiety and health issues stemming from the fear of recurrence. This challenge propelled her into Story Work, leading her to become a Level 2 Enlifted Coach and Level 2 O23 Coach. She empowers athletes and individuals alike to rewrite their internal narratives, acknowledging the profound impact of thoughts and beliefs on physical health and performance. In addition to her coaching business, Michelle's commitment to her community shines through her volunteer work, contributions to the Aloha State Bicycle Racing Association, and her initiative to lead a monthly women's bike ride, creating a space for camaraderie and empowerment. At home, Michelle's role as a wife and mother to a dynamic 15-year-old daughter is a source of personal joy and grounding. Her balanced approach to life, emphasis on happiness in athleticism, and passion for teaching others to thrive mentally, physically, and emotionally, make her an extraordinary figure in the world of endurance sports coaching. Michelle Simmons' life and work are a testament to the power of determination, the importance of mindset, and the transformative impact of supportive coaching. Her story and expertise are sure to inspire not only her clients but also all those who have the pleasure of listening to her speak. Michellesimmonscoaching.com
“I changed companies for the first three roles that I had and then I came to Microsoft,” Michelle Simmons, General Manager Central Europe at Microsoft, tells Andrew Wrobel in the seventh episode of Emerging Europe Talks She's Next empowered by Visa. “And what I found was that I've been able to take on new challenges and really work for many different companies inside Microsoft by changing functions, changing geographies and expanding my scope of responsibility. And so that's how I've ended up spending so long at one company because it's been just a platform for incredible learning, professional growth.” “I had the pleasure of first meeting Michelle earlier this year and during our conversations it was her approach to leadership that struck me most,” Andrew says. “That curiosity and authenticity, showing the way forward, especially now in such uncertain times and being able to create a vision for what the future looks like. And identifying and challenging talent in a supportive way so that they can move into their next role, even if it is at a different company.” “I measure myself on how I'm helping people in my organization to achieve their career goals,” Michelle adds.

Classical physics goes some of the way to explaining physical reality but the rules change when you get down to the smallest particles -the quantum world of atoms. And that’s the world of Michelle Simmons , Professor of Quantum Physics at the University of New South Wales. Michelle and her team have already built the first single atom transistor and are now trying to build a silicon quantum computer. That's a computer at warp speed, able to solve a complex problem in minutes which would take years on a conventional computer.
