How to Use Science in Endurance Coaching | #28 ft. Michelle Simmons

Critical Oxygen

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2024 73:26

In this episode of the Critical Oxygen podcast, I am joined by coach Michelle Simmons to discuss the intersection of science in coaching! We cover topics such as understanding thresholds and energy systems, the evolution of training and coaching, the role of lactate in training, fueling for performance, the myth of fasted training, carbohydrate and fat oxidation, the importance of being a hybrid athlete, and the role of mitochondria in energy production. The discussion covers fatigue resistance and the role of mitochondrial function in staving off fatigue. We explore the benefits of easy training and high-intensity interval training. The conversation touches on lactate production and consumption, as well as the use of lactate as a fuel source. The importance of carbohydrate intake and its impact on performance is discussed, along with the need for individualization in training and nutrition. More about Michelle in her words: Personally: I did my first triathlon in 1995! Fell in love with it immediately. I continued to race for ~25 years. I rarely race anymore but I still train bc I enjoy it and want to be healthy and fit enough to train with my athletes at times. In my time, I did 18x Ironmans, including 4x in Kona. Professionally: I started coaching a few friends in 2008. I took every opportunity to learn (still do!) and my coaching business grew to the point where I've been doing it full time for the last 15 years. I am the founder and Head Coach at TeamBSC Triathlon. I work with amateurs of all ages and abilities- some beginners and others who ultimately qualify for the World Champs! I'm actively involved in supporting endurance sports on Oahu. I coach Kailua Masters Swim team, lead a local monthly Girls Ride, and am a board member for Aloha State Bike Racing Association. Sometimes I present educational workshops for local athletes. TAEKAWAYS 1) Understanding thresholds and energy systems is crucial for optimizing training and performance. 2) Coaching and training have evolved over the years, with a greater emphasis on individualization and understanding the underlying physiology. 3) Fueling properly before, during, and after workouts is essential for performance and recovery. 3) Mitochondria play a key role in energy production. Mitochondrial function plays a crucial role in fatigue resistance. 4) Easy training and high-intensity interval training both offer unique benefits for endurance athletes. 5) Lactate production and consumption are complex processes that contribute to energy production. 6) Carbohydrate intake should be individualized based on an athlete's specific needs and goals. Dan and Richard are joined by University of Oxford Associate Professor Zeynep Pamuk to discuss her recent book, Politics and Expertise: How to Use Science in a Democratic Society. The book's grand theme is captured in the two epigraphs found at the beginning: "It would not only be foolish but downright irresponsible to accept the judgment of scientists and physicians without further examination" and "the rational layman will recognize that in matters about which there is good reason to believe there is expert opinion, he ought not to make up his own mind." Zeynep provides a robust critique, and ideas for solutions, on how the longstanding tension between expert knowledge and democratic decision making can be resolved, using very topical examples such as the recent global pandemic. Have you ever been the type of person to say something like, ‘I don't care what other people think of me?'   Science tells us that we are hardwired to want acceptance. When you think back to the primal days of hunting and gathering, we needed to show our contributions in order to be accepted in our tribe and this is ultimately how we survived.   In her book The How of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky, a study was done by her team on a group of grade-school students. She had one half of the group perform random acts of kindness each week for six weeks. They took the other half and did nothing with them; they were the control group.   By the end of the study, the kids who did something nice for other people were not only happier than the control group…They were also more ‘popular' than they were in the beginning.     Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton discuss the importance of identifying ways that you can be accepted by your current tribe and why it's so important to your overall happiness.   ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/   CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC   CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r   Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/   Like what you hear? Science and technology intricately mesh together with society. You cannot see one without the other. However, transformational changes in science and technology do not always advance sustainable development and reduce inequality. More people have access to smartphones than clean water or clean sanitation in some countries. Artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies are growing, but so has the number of people living in hunger. In this episode, we speak with the co-chairs of the Science, Technology, and Innovation or STI Forum--Mr. Sergiy Kyslytsya, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations and Mr. Kennedy Godfrey Gastorn, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tanzania to the United Nations. They both shared their insights on advancing science and technology achievements while also addressing global challenges of inequality, digital divide, inclusion, climate change, to name a few issues, through collaboration among different actors in society. We need novel ways to mitigate emerging risks to scientific research and we also need to further the collaboration among scientists, researchers, and policymakers in an ongoing dialogue in networks of trust and transparency to address the global challenges. The STI Forum of the United Nations provides this space for scientific cooperation and collaboration. It is also an important space for reflections on global development problems and discussions on how science, technology, and innovation can help contribute to approaches and solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Our ability to act on some of the most pressing issues of our time, from pandemics and climate change to artificial intelligence and nuclear weapons, depends on knowledge provided by scientists and other experts. Meanwhile, contemporary political life is increasingly characterized by problematic responses to expertise, with denials of science on the one hand and complaints about the ignorance of the citizenry on the other. Politics and Expertise: How to Use Science in a Democratic Society (Princeton University Press, 2021) offers a new model for the relationship between science and democracy, rooted in the ways in which scientific knowledge and the political context of its use are imperfect. Zeynep Pamuk starts from the fact that science is uncertain, incomplete, and contested, and shows how scientists' judgments about what is significant and useful shape the agenda and framing of political decisions. The challenge, Pamuk argues, is to ensure that democracies can expose and contest the assumptions and omissions of scientists, instead of choosing between wholesale acceptance or rejection of expertise. To this end, she argues for institutions that support scientific dissent, proposes an adversarial "science court" to facilitate the public scrutiny of science, reimagines structures for funding scientific research, and provocatively suggests restricting research into dangerous new technologies. Through rigorous philosophical analysis and fascinating examples, Politics and Expertise moves the conversation beyond the dichotomy between technocracy and populism and develops a better answer for how to govern and use science democratically. How often are you exhausted by being busy all the time, but not ever feeling very productive?  Do you get frustrated that you're not closer to living the life you dreamed of?If so, get ready to download some KNOWLEDGE that's going to CHANGE how you live. One of the ways your brain is REMARKABLE is that it is always searching for ways to conserve energy by being more EFFICIENT.  And one of the most important ways it does this is by steering you toward what you already know. And what you already know are your HABITS.The science behind HABITS and PRODUCTIVITY is a fascinating topic.  Once you understand how habits are formed, you can apply this knowledge to your life and create MASSIVE POSITIVE CHANGES.This week, I'm excited to discuss exactly how you can do that with one of the TOP EXPERTS in this field.  CHARLES DUHIGG is a Pulitzer-prize-winning reporter and the author of “Smarter Faster Better,” about the science of productivity, and “The Power of Habit,” about the science of habit formation in our lives, companies, and societies.  He's also a veteran journalist who has written for the New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine and is a frequent contributor the shows such as This American Life, N.P.R., The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and Frontline. He's spent years studying the NEUROLOGICAL UNDERPINNINGS of habits and productivity, looking closely at HOW HABITS ARE FORMED, the importance of CUES, the psychology of NEAR MISSES (Hint: pay close attention to what Charles has to say about gambling in Las Vegas), and why it's important to create and enjoy REWARDS when you engage in positive habits. If you're a business owner, top executive, or leader of any kind, you'll want to hear Charles's take on how KEYSTONE HABITS can change an organization.  As you can already figure out, the right organizational habits can not only lead to huge increases in positive work culture and your BOTTOM LINE, but they can often spell the difference between whether a business ultimately succeeds or fails as well.In practical terms, Charles will also tell you HOW TO CREATE NEW HABITS, engage in the practice of DIRECTED FOCUS, and why STARTING SMALL is one of the keys to making sure new habits stay locked in.If you're concerned about efficiency in your life (as you should be!), Charles Duhigg is going to teach you how to SAVE TIME AND MONEY, be more PRODUCTIVE, and GAIN CONTROL so you can lead a HAPPIER and more BLISSFUL life. And that's a HABIT we should all strive for…

Don't do as I do but do as I say do that sound familiar, we are living in troubled times; however, we still must hold to our faith in God. We still have leaders that are flat-out hypocritical people walking around without mask to Florida ex-presidents party in without mask at a birthday party. The list goes on elected leaders put fear into the hearts of the American people in 2021 by using covid as the tool to place this fear. I would like to share the following scripture from Isaiah 41:10; “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God.” Did you know that the bible tells us to not fear 365 different times? That is once for every day of the year! God makes it clear in scriptures like Isaiah 41:10 that he wants us to choose faith over fear every single day of our lives. He wants us to trust that He will provide for our every need. You might ask, how do I have faith? I believe that faith is when we choose to stand on the promises of God even when we begin to feel insecurity or doubt. I believe that faith is like a muscle, and every time you choose to believe the word of God, it is an opportunity to exercise that muscle. Sometimes God allows situations to arise in our lives that force us to trust him. Such as what we have been dealing with over the past 2 years now going into the 3rd year. Yes, we are faced with a difficult decision or circumstance as we welcome a new year, I want to encourage you to stand firm in your faith and trust in God. God is promising us in his word that He will reward our faith.  I want to challenge you to think about the areas of your life where God is asking you to take a step of faith and trust him. Wake up, America. Let us be not afraid and reclaim our American spirit. We had Marine Corps has kicked out 206 troops for refusing to get COVID vaccine: At least 95% of active-duty soldiers have had the shot and DOJ has 'ignored' 3,247 requests for religious accommodation so a soldier no longer has religious rights what they may have believed to be their rights under the constitution Relationship to statutory or constitutional rights. The order must not conflict with the statutory or constitutional rights of the person receiving the order.  Only lawful orders must be followed. This is what the Manual for Courts-Martial says about the lawfulness of orders: discharging these military personnel is weakened or military defense. Some of the nation's soldiers facing discharge claim they are being crushed by President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate and say it's pushing out the military's best and brightest even if they are given an honorable discharge, they are still being forced out.  You got people talking about following the science but not doing it themselves. Fauci Can't Use Science to Excuse His Missteps. science is defined as "the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena." Science is a method that humankind can use to better understand the natural universe. It is a search for knowledge through observation. Advances in science demonstrate the reach of human logic and imagination. However, a Christian's belief in science should never be like our belief in God.  A Christian can have faith in God and respect for science, as long as we remember which is perfect and which is not. I'm not trying to belittle anyone I'm praying that believers and non-believers wake up to this fear that has been created.  Yes, covid is real, but we need not live in fear or be forced to do something that goes against God or our beliefs. Controlling people do not have anyone's best interest in mind except their own (see Philippians 2:3). They are concerned primarily with pleasing themselves. Many of the Old Testament kings were controlling people. They had power, and they used it to their own advantage, often at the expense of the people they ruled. Queen Jezebel was a controlling person who used her power to get what she wanted. Her husband's method of controlling people was pouting and throwing a fit (1 Kings 21:1–4). Our belief in God is a belief of faith. We have faith in His Son for salvation, faith in His Word for instruction, and faith in His Holy Spirit for guidance. Our faith in God should be absolute, since when we put our faith in God, we depend on a perfect, omnipotent, omniscient Creator. Our belief in science should be intellectual and nothing more.  We can count on science to do many great things, but we can also count on science to make mistakes. If we put faith in science, we depend on imperfect, sinful, limited, mortal men. Science throughout history has been wrong about many things, such as the shape of the earth, powered flight, vaccines, blood transfusions, and even reproduction. God is never wrong. The words “one day at a time,” it's message must not be lost with familiarity. The message is that we are called to live today and not worry or fret about tomorrow. While we can certainly make plans, we should always keep in mind those plans should always be ready to be molded to the will of the Lord. Let's make this a year of victory. One day at a time! In closing  Lessons From Life Perhaps God had chosen me in my time to detail what I learned from all the madness about. I learned that often the false is made to look appealing. I learned that witnesses today may be testifiers tomorrow. I learned that one must be careful in helping others. I learned that you do not proclaim another man's evil. I learned that mediocrity within yourself is unacceptable. I learned that the more one says the less he is heard. I learned that one does not argue with an arguer. I learned that anonymity can be valuable. I learned that there is safety in moving with the crowd. I learned that not all praise is meant well. I learned that secrets should neither be heard nor spoken. I learned that you do not divulge what you cannot reverse. I learned that all has its day. — Baltasar Gracian in The Wisdom of Baltasar Gracian. Christianity Today, Vol. 37, no. 4.

The guys breakdown science and emotions into their basic elements to see if the two concepts make sense when used together to defend hunting. The guys discuss whether having emotions in hunting or wildlife management is wrong and whether science is the be-all-end-all in wildlife management. Other topics covered include a conversation about what part of the brain dominates human behavior, whether one feels sad for or has empathy for wildlife, whether emotions or personal values actually under pin a person's position on hunting, whether the, use science not emotion mantra is making things worse or better between hunters and non hunters, hook and bullet versus oppressed social views, ducking hunting on frozen ponds, whether mountain goats all live on public land, shooting your mechanical goose decoy and the great bumper sticker meme challenge.    Show Notes Alpine Toyota https://www.alpinetoyota.com/ The Rock Mountain Goat Alliance https://goatalliance.org/ The Hunter's Underground Podcast https://www.patreon.com/thehunterconservationistpodcast

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for Brain Fact Friday and EPISODE #175 that was inspired by our recent interview with Dr. Francis Lee Stevens whose book that was just released this week on Amazon, Affective Neuroscience in Psychotherapy[i] that reminded us that we can accelerate our results, experience less stress and psychopathology (like depression and anxiety) when we can understand the emotional science (affect is the scientific word for emotion) that can be mapped and understood within the depths of the human brain.   To access the images in the show notes, click here.  There were many AHA Moments during our interview with psychologist Dr. Stevens this week, but with mental health at the forefront of this podcast, and the fact that we are now into the last quarter of 2021, I wanted to provide something that we could all use to give us clarity and focus to finish this year on a strong, high note.  When I thought about what Dr. Stevens taught us, and why an application of affective neuroscience could help patients with psychological disorders, I thought about that for a while and wondered how this week's Brain Fact Friday could bring us to a heightened sense of clarity, focus and direction that would give us a razor's edge advantage in our life, with whatever it is we are working on or moving towards, and set us up with the right footing for a solid Q1 in 2022. In Today's Brain Fact Friday, You Will Learn: ✔︎ Why a calm brain is important to achieve ANY level of success. ✔︎ Strategies to calm our brain/regulate ourselves before we can access the thinking/decision-making parts of our brain. ✔Why a calm, regulated brain, precedes mental clarity, needed for high performance. ✔︎ How to calm or regulate ourselves before we can access knowledge, well-being and high-performance. From Focus to Calmness Dr. Stevens taught us some great strategies that can help us to understand our emotions, and even reconsolidate past traumatic memories, but there was something I knew I was missing that comes before we can access those higher, thinking parts of the brain that we need when thinking or making decisions. Today's topic is not just about how we can use the understanding of our brain to focus, so we can accomplish more, Friederike Fabritius dove deep into the neuroscience behind the focused brain on episode #27.[ii] She reminded us of the recipe needed for achieving peak performance as a mix of fun, and fear along with focus”[iii]  but that's not where I wanted to go with this episode. Then I saw it and it was as clear as ice as I thought about some of our past speakers. I mentioned to Dr. Stevens that in order to apply any of the lessons he uses with his patients for accelerated results, and improved well-being, we had to get to a place of calmness, where we could step back from the busyness of our world and allow our thinking brain (or our Central Executive Network) to come back online. We have to be able to switch from our Thinking (Central Executive) Network to our Imagination (Default Mode Network) for this calmness to occur. I did talk about the importance of switching between our brain networks to allow for these flashes of creativity and insight to flow in episode #48 which is a good episode to review.[iv] For this week's brain fact Friday, I want to add a sense of calmness behind our clarity to push us forward. I remember my mentor Bob Proctor always saying to accelerate your results you need to “Speed Up and Calm Down” and he would give us examples of how he stayed focused by saying no to what's unimportant and direct 100% of his energy and focus to what is. If you want to accelerate your results, it begins with a calm brain, that's focused and ready for speed.   From Calmness to Clarity Then we can take this calmness and laser focus to clarity. Clarity is one of the six habits that Brendon Burchard found that research shows pointed the needle towards high-performance vs those who underperform in his book, High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way[v]  and it's something I think about every morning before I begin my day. Then I thought of you, the listener, wherever you might be in the world. Maybe you are like Bryon Carpenter[vi] from the Fresh Air at Five Podcast[vii] who listens to our episodes in the dark, in the fresh air, while exercising on his morning walks in beautiful Abbotsford, British Columbia and then posts what he learns from the episode on Twitter, along with Josh Tovar[viii], from El Paso, Texas, who does the same.  Or Leadership Coach Tivo Rojas-Cheatham[ix] who listens to the episodes and sends me his thoughts, ideas, and encouragement through LinkedIn. I can't forget about Chris Gargano, from the New York Jets Organization, who listens to the podcast for ideas for his Leadership Class at NYU. Wherever you are listening from, my hopes are that this episode opens you up to all of the possibilities that come from a calm mind, providing clarity, an improved sense of self, maybe ideas for where else you can improve, with a longer-term vision of whatever it is that you are working on, or the legacy that you want to leave in this world. It all begins at the brain level. So, for this week's Brain Fact Friday: I want to remind us of the importance of a calm brain. Dr. Perry's NeuroSequential Theory is centered around the fact that we must learn to regulate ourselves first, before we can regulate others. There is power in calmness as you can see with Dr. Perry's image that shows how “A regulated, calm adult can regulate a dysregulated, anxious child.” Think back to Dr. Perry's upside-down triangle of the brain, where we had to learn to regulate (or calm ourselves down) first, before we could access our thinking or reasoning brain, and remember that in order to regulate our brain, we must go from the reptilian brain, though the limbic or emotional brain, to get to the thinking/decision-making brain with the image of The Three Brains I've put in the show notes. I saw a book written called Calm Clarity: How to Use Science to Rewire Your Brain for Greater Wisdom, Fulfillment and Joy[x] where the author explains her journey through each of these parts of the brain, calling them Brain 1.0 (Brainstem) to Brain 2.0 (Limbic Emotional Brain) to Brain 3.0 (Thinking/Reasoning Brain).   She created the Calm Clarity Program[xi]  where she teaches participants how to reach the wisdom within Brain 3.0 with what she calls a “Mind-Hacker” toolkit to help people in a way that “physiologically supports greater physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being, alignment and integration.” (Preface, Calm Clarity-Due Quach) Only then can we take what we learned from Dr. Stevens about the importance of understanding our emotions to reduce those things in our life that cause us increased stress and anxiety and access the clarity we will need to end our year as a high performer. As we are closing out 2021, why not kick things up a notch and see how we can increase our calmness, focus and clarity, to end the year on a high note. It will make life easier when 2022 rolls around as you will have a head start. Two Thoughts for Improving Focus and Clarity Improving Focus and Clarity Through Our Physical Well-Being What areas can you work on to increase your physical well-being that will in turn give you more focus, clarity and energy? We have covered the top 5 health staples[xii] and talk often of the importance of clean eating, exercise, nutrition and sleep, and will continue to research new areas that tip the needle forward for high performance, but it seems to always come back to these basic staples as well as continuing to find ways to improve our mental health. Improving Focus and Clarity Through Our Mental Well-Being  If I was to ask you the following questions, could you give me a quick and accurate answer? Do you know what you want, and where you are going? Do you know your daily direction? Do you integrate your wins every week? Do you face things that you are afraid of or do something that makes you uncomfortable daily? Do you feel your emotions instead of shutting them off? I know there's a lot involved with these two questions, but if we could look at what we can do every day to improve these two areas so that we are better than we were yesterday, we will be well on our way to heightened levels of focus and clarity to end our year intentionally and on a high note. But remember, it begins when we step back, take some deep breaths from our work, and access whatever it is for us that brings us a sense of peace and calmness in our thinking brain. I hope you have found this week's Brain Fact Friday as helpful as I have—and that we can all take some time to live and experience this sense of calmness that must come before we can break through to new levels of achievement. I'll see you next week, and the following week, I'm beyond excited for our FIRST Panel Interview and welcoming back Dr. Howard Rankin, Dr. Jon Lieff, Horacio Sanchez and Tom Beakbane who will discuss how new advancements in neuroscience can help and advance our educational system. We will also be speaking with my good friend Brian Stenzler[xiii], with his NEW book that helps parents address mental health with their children as we continue to search for new ideas and strategies to keep our next generation stay physically and mentally well. Final Thoughts:  Before I close out this episode, I wanted to mention it's hard to not notice the feedback from those listening around the world and the fact that our downloads have reached an all-time high, surpassing where we were last month, with over 11,000 downloads monthly. You don't have to create your business based on what's already been done. In this moment, there's no excuse to create your business by default. How do you create a new vision for what your business will look like? That's the question I'm tackling today. Our guest, Michelle Auerbach, is an author and consultant for entrepreneurs and organizations. She suggests mining science fiction for some of that vision. In my own business and the whole rest of my life, I've been on a journey of reading the work of Octavia E Butler to help me gather inspiration and a new vision. In Parable Of The Sower and Parable Of The Talents, through the main character, Lauren, she introduces a new way of looking at the world and a new model of leadership. I highly recommend these books and also the podcast Octavia's Parables. They're incredible sources of inspiration and ideas. We're co-creating a new world. Our businesses are part of that new world. Here's some of what we talked about: How she uses a 3-part story strategy to help her clients communicate Helping businesses and organizations become more kind and just Choosing to do a portion of her work for no fee Working with privilege and with difference How she works justice and equity into her practices Working to change the consulting world into one that is more collaborative and less competitive Using science fiction to see a possible world and then create that world Mining Becky Chambers books to help create a vision to communicate through the pandemic Finding wisdom from people who come from different fields Identify your superpowers through naming your science fiction role model Using her vision to say no to opportunities that aren't a fit. Born in Egypt, Dr. Nour left Cairo in 1977 after graduating in the top of his class at the Medical School of Cairo University. Looking for the freedom to study medical subjects of interest to him in the U.S., he made his way to London but got caught in three year immigration process. After many years of private Neurology practice in the Midwest and due only to an allergy to Canadian Geese, which flourish in large populations there, Dr. Nour moved to Southern California. Happily married with two daughters in college, he is now semi-retired. He is an accomplished painting artist, videographer, photographer and a graphic designer. He enjoys opera, sailing, tennis, bicycling, and learning about other cultures through travel, all while still enjoying helping patients with complex neurological disorders. Favorite Success Quote “With persistence, you can achieve anything your heart desires.” Key Points 1. “Love” is a Scientific Series of Processes that Occur in Four Distinct Phases 1. Mate Choice The first phase of love is mate choice. At it’s most basic level, this is the process of meeting someone and (subconsciously) deciding that they are a good match for you and your potential offspring on a genetic level. This phase happens almost instantly. 2. Falling in Love The process that Hollywood and pop culture have used and abused. This is the phase in a relationship where the two individuals will feel massive attraction for one another and experience a heightened increase in certain pleasure chemicals. This phase will typically last 1-3 years. 3. Falling Out of Love  A necessary part of finding true love, the third phase of love is where you effectively experience the proverbial “come down” from the neurochemical high that you experienced during phase two. During this phase of the process, you will begin struggling in your relationship and find your partner less appealing than you did before.  This phase will typically last around a year. 4. True Love This is where the rubber meets the road. During the final stage of love, “True Love”, you have experienced falling out of love, made a conscious and informed decision that your current partner is right for you, and you now experience a release of a new set of pleasure chemicals that are slower forming but longer lasting, leading to the much desired “Happily ever after”. 2. Falling Out of Love is Essential to True Love Many people assume that if they are falling out of love with their partner it is a bad thing. However, they should actually get excited. Falling out of love is an essential, if not the most essential part of the four phases of true love. You see, the first two phases of love cause people to experience such an overwhelm of pleasure chemicals being released in the brain that they quite literally cannot see the other person for what they really are. Thus the phrase “Love is blind”. However, because your genes are hardwired to help ensure that you are able to survive and procreate with the highest levels of success possible, phase two begins. During this phase, your genes are working behind the scenes to help you determine whether the person you are with is truly the best match for you in the long run. If you do not have this phase, you cannot have true love. Read that again and write it down. Unless you fall out of love with your partner, you will scientifically never be able to experience true and lasting love.  This is not an easy reality to stomach, but the knowledge and foresight of what is to come will allow you to make informed decisions about your relationships and truly determine what is best for you in the future. 3. If You Do Not Fall Out of Love with Somebody You Cannot Fall in Love With Someone New Many men beat themselves up and feel battered down because they are unable to move on after a bad breakup or divorce. Gentlemen, I have good news for you. It is not your fault. Despite what we have been lead to believe by the pop culture surrounding masculinity, on a chemical and neurological level, you cannot just get over it whenever you experience a traumatizing separation. You see, whenever you are caught in the second phase of love and your partner ends the relationship (often because they reached the third phase and did not know how to handle it), you are still caught in love on a chemical level. Your brain will literally not allow you to move on until you have experienced the biological and neurological effects of falling out of love. So what does this mean for you? If your wife or girlfriend ends things while you are mid-phase 2 are you doomed to an eternity of lovelessness? No. Even though your brain and genes are working “against” you, it is possible to recover. Typically this will occur whenever you maintain an amiable (or nonamiable) relationship with your previous partner and allow yourself to naturally fall out of love with them. If they have been removed from your life completely, you will often need to seek professional help to truly recover and move on to your next love in a healthy way. 4. Love and Sex Are Not the Same Thing A common fallacy among the uninformed is that love and sex are the same things. They are not. While love and sex are complimentary in their nature, they serve two completely different purposes. Think about it this way. Sex is all about satiation. It’s about achieving the goal of orgasm and there is a set amount of sex that any given person can handle before they are done. Love, on the other hand, does not have an inherent goal or “climax”. It is an ongoing process that can and should feel like a bottomless well. Have you ever heard anyone say “No thanks, I don’t want any more love today. You can take your love and go give it to someone else.”? However, love makes sex more intense and emotional and sex makes loves more binding. Like a doctor and a nurse, they work together, but serve very separate roles. 5. Your Capacity for Love Depends on Your Genes And now, the big one. This particular point will be uncomfortable for many of you and might even make some of you angry. But like the famous scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson said, “The great thing about science is that it is true whether you agree with it or not”. Your capacity for true love, connection, and monogamy are all highly dependent on your genes. There are some people who due to their genetic variations quite literally cannot experience true love. The chemicals are there, but the genetic wiring to receive the “true love” chemicals are not. This is a hard pill for many to swallow. The fact that monogamy, fidelity, and the quality of your relationships can actually have anything to do with your genes, let alone everything to do with them, is not something that most members of society understand and accept. And while this truth may not be comfortable, it is the truth and it’s important that you remember this on your quest to find your own true love.

The students go around villages in Alirajpur district, testing water samples from handpumps, geotagging them, and marking them as safe or unsafe. Madhya Pradesh is one of the 19 Indian states severely affected by high fluoride content in drinking water. Long-term ingestion of large amounts of fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Through the project run by Columbia University researchers and local partners, the young volunteers, majorly girls, are finding a solution to the fluoride crisis by identifying the extent of the problem in their homelands. This week I share my thoughts on how a scientific mindset can be used to fight the fear of the unknown. In these current times, its tough to get any solid information about a topic. Even the experts haven't had enough time to really figure out what's going on. Which means we have to settle for 'good enough'. But we can have standards.  Today, I bring back the concept of the scientific ladder of ideas to showcase how science values different types of ideas. The rungs of the ladder start from Hypothesis, to Theory, all the way to Law. I use current events to show how a scientific mindset can help us quell the fear of the unknown so we can focus on what's important and in front of us today.  Wishing you all the best in these strange times. The fact that monogamy, fidelity, and the quality of your relationships can actually have anything to do with your genes, let alone everything to do with them, is not something that most members of society understand and accept. And while this truth may not be comfortable, it is the truth and it's important that you remember this on your quest to find your own true love.

“We assume that regular functioning at regular times is enough to scale. But it’s not.”Nic Peterson (5:40-5:46) When it comes to failure, entrepreneurs need to understand the complexities involved in growing and scaling their businesses. Your business can achieve a 5X return on investment (ROI) and still be running out of money. This keeps business owners running on a hamster wheel that never gets them where they want to be. Businesses are complex systems, and thinking the results you achieve are linear is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. If you double the stimulus, you won’t necessarily double the response. Think of a busy highway. Increasing the number of cars by 10 percent might increase the time it takes to get to your destination by 60 percent or more. “A non-linear response means if you double the stimulus...you’re not necessarily going to get double the response.” - Nic Peterson (1:38-1:47)You can’t rely on a linear model when scaling your business. Things happen in business that make linear growth nearly impossible. Your marketing costs may go up or your market might become saturated. So doubling your marketing spending won’t mean that your profit doubles, too. Responses aren’t linear, and averages don’t matter as much as you think they do. Use Science of Hindsight to Prevent Business FailureAny errors in your business will only increase the time it takes to achieve a result. It will never cause you to get there faster. So entrepreneurs need to pay attention to what actually happens instead of relying on their assumptions. This is where the science of hindsight comes in. You need to measure, manage, and adjust when scaling your business. Hindsight lets you understand the responses more clearly. One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is assuming that normal function is enough to scale. But it only takes one error to show you how wrong that assumption can be. You can build a larger movie theater that fits more and more people. But if the size of the exit door stays the same, all it takes is for one person to yell, “Fire!” for you to see that it’s not equipped to serve all those people. So, as your business grows, you need to grow its “doors” before you encounter any of the endless issues that can catch you by surprise. “Errors can only increase a length in time. Errors will never cause you to arrive early.” - Nic Peterson (3:21-3:38) Don’t Just Optimize for the Good Times It’s easy to optimize based on the good times when everything is efficient and working smoothly. But when Facebook goes down or YouTube bans your ad account, you have to look at what happened so you can take the right steps to protect your revenue, scale your business for the long term, and achieve a positive ROI. Today’s entrepreneurs need to make business decisions that account for the asymmetry of errors and non-linear responses. When you understand this hard truth, you develop a profitable growth model that helps you get the returns you need to achieve lasting success. Geoffrey F. Miller is an American evolutionary psychologist, serving as an associate professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico and known for his expertise in sexual selection in human evolution, and for his views on the evolution through sexual selection of the human brain as sexual ornamentation. Dr. Miller has authored several books including The Mating Mind, Spent, and Mate. Favorite Success Quote “There is very little difference between one man and another, but what little there is is very important” ~William James Key Points 1. One of the Keys to Success with Women is to Put Yourself in Their Shoes  If you want to become successful with women, it is imperative that you start by putting yourself in the woman's shoes. Ask yourself what it is that she is truly looking for in a man, what are her concerns, what are her fears? Women are far more physically vulnerable than men are and as such, becoming a man that women can feel safe around should be a priority when you begin your journey into the dating world. Women are also worried about their social and economic status. What will it do to her reputation if she dates or sleeps with you? What will her friends think?  It's questions like this that help you to understand what women are looking for and how you can better provide it. If you want to be successful with women, start by getting into their head. 2. Understand Mating Markets  This is a seemingly simple concept, but one of vital importance. If you want to succeed at fishing, go where the fish are! Plain and simple, the only way you will get good with women is if you go where there are an abundance of women. Moving to a large city, a big, liberal college, or moving overseas to countries with high populations of beautiful women (eg Argentina and Brazil) will increase your chances of success in mating drastically. 3. Looks Matter Less than You Think What science has shown us is that women value looks significantly less than they do certain mental and emotional traits. (with the exception of outliers, eg extremely overweight or a male model). What this means is that, no matter what numbers came up for you in the ovarian lottery, if you are an average guy, your success with women will be determined more by the qualities that you display than your looks. 4. Women want a Man with Potential Women love to be along for the ride, they love to find men who are ambitious and hardworking, and be there with him when he has nothing and once he gets it all. Potential is one of the sexiest things to a woman. In fact studies have shown that women would rather be with a failed entrepreneur, who put his neck on the line and tried to succeed, than they would with a trust fund baby who was rich but never worked for it. What this means for you is that you don't have to be perfect, you just have to show women that you have potential to be the man they've always wanted.

Corey A. DeAngelis of the Cato Institute joins the podcast to discuss his review of the school choice research. Is public schooling a public good, a merit good, or a demerit good? Public schooling fails both conditions specified in the standard economic definition of a public good. In order to place public schooling into one of the remaining two categories, I first assess all of the theoretical positive and negative externalities resulting from public schooling as opposed to publicly financed universal school vouchers. Then, in an original contribution to the literature, I quantify the magnitude and sign of the net externality of government schooling in the United States using the preponderance of the most rigorous scientific evidence. We discuss this paper in addition to a recent blog post Corey wrote entitled "We Shouldn’t Need to Use Science to Grant Educational Freedom." Corey argues that we should have a strong presumption in favour of letting families choose where their kids go to school. In the academic debate on school choice, people adopt an implicit balance of evidence standard for supporting or opposing school choice. But it makes more sense to place the burden of evidence on those who seek to limit others' choices.

Aired Wednesday, 26 July 2017, 8:00 PM ET Dr. Fred Nour, M.D. - True Love: How to Use Science to Understand Love Lyricist Paul Francis Webster penned the popular classic, “Love is a Many Splendored Thing.” Elizabeth Barret Browning’s Sonnet 43 asked, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Mick Jagger sang, “Love is a Bitch.” Poetry, music, literature and the arts have extolled the ups and downs of love since humanity first began to express its feelings about the topic. But perhaps the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, came closest to the truth when he said, “Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind and therefore is wing’d cupid painted blind.” What is the true connection between the mind, or more specifically the brain and love? Does modern neuroscience have answers to the story and the glory of love? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Dr. Fred Nour, M.D., says there is exacting science behind love and that awareness of how this works can lead to true and lasting love. Dr. Nour is a nationally and internationally renowned neurologist who is certified in both neurology and neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London.
