Today's episode is the first of three conversations with ISF CEO Steve Durbin around the coming impact of technological development on society and business. We know that new technologies have always tested organisations, and technological innovation and integration into our lives and enterprises — it's only accelerating. We offer an analysis of potential future scenarios, as well as practical tips for what organisations can do now to prepare. Key Takeaways: 1. Organisations must prioritise supporting smaller entities in keeping up with the fast pace of technological change. 2. Security can deliver competitive advantage, but implementation challenges persist, and security risks can become low priority in a fast-paced tech landscape. 3. Organisations face pressure to modernise technology while managing legacy systems and regulatory demands. 4. CEOs must balance competing priorities, including ESG initiatives, employee expectations, and shareholder demands. 5. Political developments may force organisations to respect local restrictions on technologies. 6. Organisations are advised to protect crown jewels, ensure data protection, and monitor supply chain partners. 7. Organisations must prepare for quantum-proof encryption and socialise policies for AI use. Tune in to hear more about: 1. The impact of technological innovation on business and society, with a focus on adoption challenges and timing (0:00) 2. Security risks in technology innovation and adoption (1:29) 3. The impact of quantum computing on cybersecurity and the need for organizations to prioritize legacy technology updates (6:59) 4. Volatility, uncertainty, and technological change in the security industry (12:45) 5. How technology innovations can disrupt and improve organizations (18:22) 6. Managing innovation in a rapidly challenging digital landscape (20:40) 7. Limitations of accessing powerful technologies due to restrictions, threats, and security concerns (26:12) 8. Emerging threats and risks in technology, including quantum computing, AI, and legacy systems (32:18) Standout Quotes: 1. “Organisations could certainly find themselves cut off from the supercharged processing power, because it may be developed by a government for its own ends and restricted, expensive, all of those sorts of things, so that it effectively becomes unavailable. And I think organisations, despite all of that, are going to have to operate in the shadow of this massive computing power shift when it comes about as the pace of change accelerates, innovations proliferate, traditional life cycles of technology shorten.” - Steve Durbin 2. “If we're going to have smaller organisations within our overall ecosystem, we need to be just sparing a bit of a thought for how they might be keeping up with such a fast pace of change and how we're going to support them in continuing to meet some of the standards and bars that were setting, so that everybody benefits, frankly.” - Steve Durbin 3. “So the world is also reshaping, as we're introducing AI into what we're doing. And so again, I think that the challenge from the business perspective, from the security perspective, from the technology perspective, is really about: how do you focus on what is important for your organisation, for your people, for your customers, in a world that is constantly now changing? And the speed of that change is only going to get faster. And we haven't seen that before.” - Steve Durbin 4. “So you're in a much better position, if you can control your innovations irrespective of what's going on. But you're never going to be able, I think, to divorce yourself completely from the market, because you operate in the market. And so the speed at which the market is evolving is going to, I think, determine — to a certain extent, anyway — your success in managing your own innovation, so you may need to be innovating more quickly than you're comfortable, just in order to try to keep up.” - Steve Durbin Mentioned in this episode: ISF Analyst Insight Podcast ISF Podcast: Data Dilemmas: Outsmarting the perils of AI Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.

And it hit me just how hard this job was for me, when it was so easy for my Generator siblings. So now you have an idea of how excited I am to share with you my interview with the founder of Quantum Human Design, the incomparable Karen Curry Parker.I truly believe that Quantum Human Design is a game changer for us all as we follow the path to fulfill our big soul missions. And I am so honored to have Karen join me on Soul Guide Radio to explore the ways it can positively impact us.Karen is one of my key spiritual teachers, and I learn so much from her. My wish for you is to receive as much wisdom from her as I do. Settle in and get ready to soak up the juicy insights on Quantum Human Design and all that it has to offer you.Guest Bio:Karen Curry Parker is a Transformational Teacher, Speaker & Coach. “We are at a choice point as a humanity. Are we going to continue to play sides and think that if we go toward one path that we have to get rid of another one? Or are we going to take a step back and really explore what it means to see, for example, healing and medicine from multiple perspectives? And truly integrate them for whole person healing.”  - Dr. Shamini Jain, psychologist, scientist, founder and CEO of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative™ (CHI), and today's guest on Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker. It doesn't just take time to change systems. It takes time to change minds. Systems AND people are suspicious by nature. Imagine a world where our medical system doesn't just treat the symptoms of distress but tackles the root of distress. Imagine a health care system that treats the whole person, even the whole family in some cases. A health care system that is accessible to everyone and supports sustainable, long-term healing. There's a battle for our beliefs, what we believe about ourselves, and our relationship to the world. That's no secret. There is a deeper battle that is less recognized by many people even in our genre, and it is a battle for our very humanness.”  - Gregg Braden, author, educator, internationally renowned pioneer of bridging spirituality and science, and today's guest on Quantum Revolution.   We are at a global crossroads. We can be deliberate and aware, steering the path that we take as we grow forward - or not. Our attention and intention influences how we walk the path of our growth and the quality of the future we create.  The world is looking to you to be a part of engineering the way forward.  It starts first with you -  by healing the karma of your self-worth and the value you place on yourself. By doing this, you can create with intentions and higher frequencies of energy that support the peaceful and sustainable evolution of the planet. Jack Hidary, boss of the quantum technology company Sandbox AQ, tells us how quantum computers already pose a threat today, even if it's decades before one powerful enough to threaten encryption will be built. And cryptographer Dan Bernstein explains why protecting ourselves from the quantum threat might just be down to better maths.Presented by Madhumita Murgia and John Thornhill, produced by Josh Gabert-Doyon and Edwin Lane. “There's a place within yourself where you can retreat, where you can revitalize, where you can be fully who you are, where you meet life. And when you find that place within, you expand it, make it bigger, breathe into that, and then bring energy from that space within you into your life, into your relationships, and into everything that you're doing.” – Dr. Anneloes Smitsman Join Karen Curry Parker and Dr. Anneloes Smitsman as they discuss creativity, systems, burn-out, and how we can use the imaginals within ourselves to continue our journey to the next level of evolution for humanity. The conversation cumulates in a beautiful explanation by Dr. Smitsman on her groundbreaking work with EARTHwise Centre to create the EARTHwise Constitution for a Planetary Civilization. Rather than the not-so-exciting constitutions we think about as they relate to the laws of humanity, this constitution is based on the principles of Earth jurisprudence and is intended to be a living document that evolves as our understanding of the world evolves. “Within all of us already lives the evolutionary potentials of our next step. “The universe was born, not in an implicitly chaotic big bang, but as the first moment of a fine-tuned and ongoing big breath.” Jude Currivan, today's guest on Quantum Revolution We have been conditioned to believe that the Universe began with a big bang - an explosion that initiated chaos, disruption and, ultimately, lined up a series of random, chaotic events that eventually led to the creation of life on Earth. This assumption forces us to believe that not only is life a serendipitous and random event resulting from the birth of the Universe, we ourselves are simply accidental aspects of this cosmic event. In her new book, The Story of Gaia, Dr. Currivan shares scientific breakthroughs which detail the 13.8-billion-year story of our universe and Gaia, where everything in existence has inherent meaning and evolutionary purpose. Evolution is not driven by random occurrences and mutations, but by profoundly resonant and harmonic interplays of forces and influences, each intelligently informed and guided. Brahna started writing this memoir thirty years after literally catching on fire, an event which altered the course of her destiny. As an emerging young painter in New York City, she lived her dream, supporting herself painting full time. At night, she attended openings, cultural events and clubs. In 1982, a flame burned 55% of her body, including her painting arm. She spent months in the burn unit, and the next year in physical and occupational therapy. As Brahna healed, her priorities shifted from the aspiration of art-world fame to more collaborative creative interactions. She worked as an art therapist in a hospital program for abused children, in nursing homes and in schools. She did large-scale public projects for The New York City Department of Health and joined The Guerrilla Girls, a women's artist-activist collective, fighting injustices in the art world. She has turned her life experiences into a film and now this book. Slow Dancing With Fire: A Memoir of Resilience is available now through Shanti Press. About the Author: Brahna Yassky won honorable mention for the 2018 Doheny Prize from the Center for Fiction and finalist for the 2019 Brooklyn Nonfiction Prize. Her essays have been published in The Plentitudes Journal, The American Writers Review 2020 (San Fedele Press), Wired, Salon, The Independent, among others. Trained as a visual artist at California College of the Arts and San Francisco State University her work has been widely exhibited, including The Bali Purnati Center, MOMA, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Hudson River Museum and The Painting Center, NYC. #24 - Why neuroscience needs a quantum revolution

Justin Riddle Podcast

In episode 24 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle discusses why neuroscience is in need of a quantum revolution. This revolution is underway in the field of information technology and low-level biology. Quantum computers are actively being developed and are on the precipice of overcoming the computational power of digital computers. Meanwhile, biology is increasingly acknowledging the role that quantum mechanics plays in various processes, including photosynthesis and magnetic-field perception in birds. But what about neuroscience? Could quantum mechanics contribute to neural function and directly to our conscious experience? There are quite a few reasons why quantum computers align with the human experience: (1) Quantum computer design encourages the creation of a single large system, similar to the creation of single self within a body. (2) The collapse of the wave function in quantum mechanics may provide room for freewill. (3) Non-local influences in quantum mechanics provide novel ways to describe meaning beyond arbitrary associations in a physical world. While quantum mechanics provides novel solutions to solving the mysteries of consciousness, neuroscience reveals that the strongest correlate to human cognition is low-frequency electrical fluctuations in the brain. After a brief survey of recent research in the neural oscillatory basis of cognition, the potential alignment between neural oscillations and principles of quantum mechanics are discussed. While this connection is currently speculative, computational models of cognition are pointing towards human rationality exhibiting principles of quantum mechanics. There could be a very near future where descriptions of human psychology are quantum mechanical in nature and the parameters of these models relate to neural oscillations in the brain. While the details for how a quantum computer could be implemented in the brain is of critical need, cognitive neuroscience research can move forward utilizing these ideas in the meantime.

What is knowledge?    Who decides what is knowledge?    Or, on a more frightening note, what is truth?   We see this game being played out on many fronts on the planet at this very moment. During this season of Quantum Revolution, we heard stories from leading-edge scientists who are caught up in the reality of having to work around the system to share their research with the world.   In the next few episodes, you're going to hear information and conversations that might challenge you on many levels.      Today's guest challenged me to really hear someone else's truth even though some of it is in direct conflict with mine.      There is a separate set of questions we also have to ask ourselves - especially during this time on the planet. If truth is malleable, who is right?  What are the absolute truths and values that you choose to live by?   What if, together, we can find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today - even if, individually, we are quite different?     Richard Jacobs is the co-author of the Finding Genius book series and the creator of the Finding Genius Podcast. Richard Jacobs indulged his fascination with technology by starting the  Finding Genius Podcast  (https://www.findinggeniuspodcast.com/). He didn't know that it would end up taking him into hundreds of specialties in science, technology, and medicine. His book, Finding Genius: Understanding Viruses: 30 Questions, 25 Geniuses, 100 Amazing Insights (https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Genius-Understanding-Questions-Geniuses-ebook/dp/B08WBW7JNT) is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals.   Rich's thousands of conversations with gifted scientists shows how much promising work is going on right now that risks being starved of the funding, visibility, and other support it needs to thrive, often due to politics and conflicts of interest. However, there is only so much one person can achieve on his own. That is why Rich set up the Finding Genius Foundation (https://www.findinggeniusfoundation.org/ ) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – to support this breakthrough work in a way that is sustainable.   I'm Karen Curry Parker.  If you'd like to explore the truth about who you are and why you're here on the planet at this time, please visit www.quantumalignmentsystem.com. On this podcast we talk a lot about sustainability and reframing the conversation around topics that seem sort of “certain.”  It is said that the only things certain in life are death and taxes.  Death, by definition, is not sustainable - or is it?  In America, the funeral industry is costly and environmentally destructive. This is not the most comfortable conversation for many of us.  We don't want to think about death.  But, as my guest today, Sandy Gibson, founder of Better Place Forests, shares with us, death is a sacred part of life and when we reframe the conversation about the ritual of funerals in the context of creating a sacred space for remembering, we can explore healthier and more sustainable options for all the phases of life. Sandy Gibson is a man on a mission - a person with a clear Chief Aim and the passion and directive to fulfill it.  I have to say that, while I was curious about having a conversation about the funeral industry and exploring more sustainable ways of honoring our loved ones, I was deeply impacted by Sandy's personal journey with death - and life. Obviously, the journey of processing a loss and turning it into some kind of greater purpose takes time. What Sandy so beautifully shared with his story is that tragedy, as painful as it can be in the moment - and the moments following - can also bring the seeds of purpose. Viktor Frankl, the Holocaust survivor and author of the book, Man's Search for Meaning, stated that “In some ways suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning.”  Sandy Gibson has done just that.  He has turned the narrative around grief into a conversation about the sacredness of loss and turned the business of dying into an act of honoring in a sustainable and sacred way.  Perhaps the journey we take with death might seem less tragic if we fully embrace - with intent and purpose - the experience of Life. If you'd like to learn more about how to find your Chief Aim, please visit www.quantumalignmentsystem.com where you can discover who you are and why you're here.  Thank you for joining me for Quantum Revolution. Sandy Gibson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Better Place Forests, a sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families who choose cremation.  When Sandy was a young boy, he lost his father to a stroke and his mother to cancer. After years of visiting their graves in a dreary Toronto cemetery, Sandy began to imagine what a better place to remember his parents might look like. In 2015, he founded Better Place Forests with his two best friends to give every family the chance to visit and remember the people they love in nature.  Based in San Francisco, Better Place Forests launched America's first conservation memorial forests in 2017. Better Place Forests has been featured in the New York Times, on the Today Show, and by the World Economic Forum. Known for its strong culture, Comparably recognized Better Place Forests with national awards for Best Company Leadership, Best CEOs for Women, Best Company Culture, Best CEOs, and Best Companies for Women in 2019 and 2020.  Sandy graduated from Princeton University in 2006 with an A.B. in History. What if the most important thing we need to do TO SURVIVE is to be imaginative?  Activate our full creative potential? Your relationship with your creativity is a reflection of your relationship with yourself.  What you believe about creativity reflects what you believe about yourself.  But, somewhere along the way, we traded our natural, immersive creativity for logic, predictability, correctness, and responsibility.  Perhaps someone told you “you're not that creative” or “your art is no good,” and you believed them. You may also have experienced something traumatic, which understandably shut down your creative self, as you had to prioritize survival over imagination. The single biggest thing we need to heal as we face an era of uncertainty and as we stand on the brink of a creative revolution that promises to hold the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today, is to believe in our own creative capacity.  Our guest today, Jacob Nordby, author of the book The Creative Cure, believes that EVERY HUMAN IS CREATIVE. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UNCREATIVE HUMAN.  Join us we discuss why we need to cure creativity and how creativity is often the cure for our lives. I was in middle school the first time I heard the expression, “Knowledge is Power.”  I was the ultimate nerd in middle school.  I spent my afternoons indulging in my obsession over lichens, traipsing through the vacant fields behind our luxury apartment with my magnifying glass and collection plates.  I went to a small international school in Germany where I was able to take bonus classes in the high school.  All twelve grades were housed in the same building, so I only had to walk across the gymnasium to my advanced biology class where I'd absorb all the information that they threw at me while I crushed on the cute Scottish boy who sat next to me. For most of the day I was in classes with my same-aged peers.  When my teacher shared the phrase, “Knowledge is Power” with us I distinctly remember taking a good, long, slow look at the kids in the classroom and thinking that this phrase is distinctly not true. If knowledge is “power,” then I wouldn't be picked on mercilessly in class.  The boys, who just the day before, had positioned a bucket of water in the corner of the classroom door which had unceremoniously dumped onto our teacher, wouldn't still be here in the classroom.  If knowledge was power, we'd be able to get through our daily lessons without having to stop because the class was talking too much or distracted by a completely non-sequitur topic. And I wouldn't always be the last one picked in P.E. I had, what felt like to me, a lot of knowledge, but very little power.  Like many of you, I felt like that a lot of my life.  What Sir Francis Bacon didn't lay out in his brilliant statement is specifically what kind of knowledge do you need to have to be powerful.  Obviously, it isn't knowledge about lichens - or - from my more adult perspective, knowledge about how to soothe a newborn baby, how to fix a hearty bowl of soup to feed your family when funds are tight, or how to emotionally prop up an anxious 12-year-old during a pandemic. What kind of knowledge was Sir Francis Bacon actually referring to? Over time this statement has often been used to highlight the importance of education.  More recently, this statement refers to being “in the know” about conspiracy theories.  We've spent a lot of time exploring the idea of knowledge, which is this day and age is a highly mutable concept.  What is knowledge?  Who decides what is knowledge?  Or, on a more frightening note, what is truth? Maybe it's time, instead of trying to understand what defines knowledge, we look at this statement through the exploration of what is power?  In the material world and through the lens of material consciousness, power is force.  Power is controlled by numbers and how much access you have to material resources.  Basically, those with the most toys win.  The knowledge that defines this kind of power is the ability to know how to take seize, hustle, hoard, usurp, and steal resources. This knowledge teaches us how to play a zero-sum game and come out as the winner. Because this is a zero-sum game, no one wins until a certain group of people have power over the vast majority of the resources.  We are living on the very edge of this formula and if we continue this game a whole lot of us are going to lose. But we no longer live in the material era.  Science has shown us that the world isn't really a material world.  It's a quantum world.  The material world is simply an artifact of a quantum reality that plays according to a different set of rules.  In the quantum world, the person who “wins” and has the most amount of power, is the person who builds a big enough field of quantum information that eventually drops into material formation once it reaches a critical mass.  Quantum science has shown us that manifestation is influenced by emotional alignment. We now understand that the cosmos itself is biased towards unity, coherence and advanced states of organization and goals and intentions that are in alignment with this core bias are more powerful than those that go against it. Our core problem with power is that we fail to yield it.  We are so deeply entranced and hypnotized by the material world that we don't allow ourselves to cultivate the faith to create anything beyond what we know how to create.  We don't dream.  We don't imagine.  Some of us have even stopped hoping… In the Quantum Era, power comes not from force, but from faith.  How much faith you have determines what and how much you can create.  It determines how much you can build, influence, endure, sustain and, ultimately, how many resources you create so you can share more with the world.  Faith is a muscle which is cultivated with practice.  Faith, by definition, is the belief in something that you can't see and the possibility of doing something you don't know how to do.  Faith lives on the very edge of creativity and builds the infrastructure for evolution and growth.  The details get filled in as you go but, without faith, there is not scaffolding for the details to fill in.  Maybe knowledge in an era when information is so accessible isn't really as powerful as it used to be. Maybe the new currency of power is faith.  In a Quantum Revolution it is the people who consciously cultivate the largest field of information on a quantum level, by virtue of the faith that they hold, who have the potential to hold the most power. What do you have faith in?  Are you actually dreaming big enough to stretch beyond what you know to do?  What field of quantum information are you building?  Are you laying the foundation for what you really want to be experiencing on our planet?  If not, let's get to work building something different… Your Quantum Human Design teaches you exactly how you can build your faith muscle. This season our theme has been creativity.  We tend to think of creativity as art, music, dance and often designate being creative as an afterthought - something we allow ourselves to indulge in after we've done our real work. In our school system, our focus has shifted to exploring educational systems rooted in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.  Notice which topic got left out of that clever acronym. There is no art in STEM. And yet, in the interviews we've conducted this season, we've heard over and over again that some of the world's most innovative thought-leaders and scientists have a creative practice of some kind that supports them in being creative in their field. My guest today is Flora Bowley.  Flora is an artist, retreat facilitator, creative catalyst, and author of five books: The Art of Aliveness, Brave Intuitive Painting, Creative Revolution, Fresh Paint, and Earth is Holding You. Her colorful and layered paintings are also used to design calendars, cards, planners, journals, fabric, and unique product lines sold around the world. Flora encourages us to look at the art of our life, to explore how we can use creativity to unlock and unbind ourselves from old ways of being and thinking.  I hope that this interview will have you contemplating the role that creativity plays in your daily practice.  I hope that you'll explore new ways to break free from the trap of hard metrics that puts you in boxes instead of inviting you to create your own world.  Without creativity, science is just repetition.  Propagating the same ideas over and over again.  Limiting the questions we ask and closing us off to the possibility of finding the elegant solutions to our challenges.  Without art, we can't tap into our creativity.  If art changes everything, the very first thing it changes is our fundamental relationship with ourselves and our ability to move from inspiration to fulfillment, from idea to innovative solution.  Join me for this powerful conversation as we explore the role of creativity in transforming the world. Flora Bowley (pronounced bowl-lee) is an artist, author, and gentle guide whose creative process and soulful approach to living have touched thousands of lives. In her most recent book, The Art of Aliveness, Flora explores the vast ways in which the principles of creativity can serve as fuel for a more alive and awakened way of living in the world – no paintbrushes required. Find The Art of Aliveness at https://florabowley.com/books/ or at https://www.amazon.com/Art-Aliveness-Creative-Return-Matters/dp/1950253104/ Flora believes that creative expression is waiting to unfold within every person who is brave enough to trust, let go, and explore, and it is through this kind of heartfelt expression that truths are revealed, lives transform, and new worlds are born. She lives and creates in Portland, OR. The wholistic approach to wellness, education, stress-relief, alternative medicine, and more lies in the integration of the mind, body and spirit.  The phrase, mind, body, and spirit - the holy trinity of wholistic well-being - from its inception, gives us a dilemma. There is no separation between the mind, the body, and the spirit.  They are One.  And yet, the nature of the way the brain works and the materialistic interpretation of life, insists that the mind, the body, and the spirit are all separate entities, chugging along independently, hoping to be harnessed in unity somehow as the end-result of “awakened living.” Materialistic thinking wants us to rank mind, body, and spirit in order.  Which comes first?  Which one is the most important?  Which one controls the functioning of the rest? But if we try to answer these questions, we end up sending ourselves down a rabbit hole that mimics the question of the chicken and the egg.  Or the challenge set up by the phrase, “I am a liar.” If the phrase is true, then you are lying.  If the phrase is a lie, then you're telling the truth.  In their new book, The Quantum Brain, physicist Dr. Amit Goswami and physician Dr. Valentina Onisor explore the mind, body, and spirit dilemma by untangling the myths of our understanding of the brain.  By learning how to use the brain as a tool to help us influence the way in which we perceive meaning and purpose in our lives, we tap into our natural ability to align our mind and consequently our bodies and the flow of spirit through our lives in a way that optimizes our potential for well-being and abundance. We are designed to work in collaboration with the flow of Life's Intelligence working through us.  Join us for this mind-expanding conversation about the true purpose of the brain and how to optimize the function of your brain. Amit started the quantum activism movement, establishing a transformative education institution, Quantum Activism Vishwalayam (QAV) in India, based on quantum science and primacy of consciousness. Amit is a spiritual practitioner and calls himself a quantum activist in search of Wholeness. Valentina R. Onisor, MD is a family medicine physician who integrates alternative medicine systems into her practice.  Committed to consciousness awakening-related sciences and a pioneer of quantum integrative medicine, Valentina has made correlations between the ancient sciences and quantum physics, using both as a support for teachings. As a leader in transformational education, Valentina serves as a teacher, co-founder and Dean of Students at Quantum Activism Vishwalayam.  She is also a lecturer at Quantum Academy in Brazil. Innocent and Imprisoned, Does the Criminal Justice System Really Work with Professor Justin Brooks

Todays' Quantum Revolution podcast is a little different than some of our previous episodes.  We usually focus on the relationship between science and spirituality. This season we have expanded our carefully curated group of guests to include other kinds of Quantum Revolutionaries.  From innovative social activists like Frank Schaeffer, to experts leading the charge on criminal justice reform, like today's guest, Justin Brooks. In this episode we're going to look at the judicial system and explore the question, what happens when you're imprisoned for a crime you didn't commit - and is the penal system actually fulfilling its purpose of rehabilitation and equitable punishment? When confronting outdated and discriminatory systems, it requires creativity to find the solutions that work within the confines of a dysfunctional system and eventually discovering the solutions to transforming the system into something more equitable and sustainable.  Today's guest, Justin Brooks, is the embodiment of this kind of disruptive and compassionate creativity. We can't transform the criminal justice system if we're not taking a realistic look at what is actually happening.  If the goal of the criminal justice system is to rehabilitate people, we're failing.  Decades of research have shown that prison is the least effective place to rehabilitate offenders. Studies have indicated that a stint in prison increases the likelihood that inmates will reoffend.  Many inmates start off as young offenders who are deeply traumatized and become more traumatized by a system that clearly does not work. What would a just judiciary system look like?  How could we better rehabilitate people who commit crimes so that they can be reintroduced back into society as healed individuals?  How do we tackle racism in the current system?  These are the questions we must be asking as a society. We might not have the answer to these questions yet, but it's time we start imagining new possibilities.  And then taking the incremental steps as they appear in front of us. One step you can take today is to visit californiainnocenceproject.org and make a donation.  Your contribution is used to help innocent people get off death row.  Justin Brooks is the Director and Co-Founder of the California Innocence Project. He has practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington D.C., Michigan, and Illinois. Over the course of his career he has served as counsel on several high-profile criminal cases, including the Brian Banks case which was the subject of an award winning movie, Brian Banks, in 2018. Since 1999, Professor Brooks has also worked extensively in Latin America. He is the Founder and Director of California Western's Latin American Institute for Law and Justice, an organization devoted to training law students and lawyers in Latin America and improving justice systems. He is also the Founder and Director of Red Inocente, an organization devoted to starting and supporting innocence organizations throughout Latin America. He has been recognized several times by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. In 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine recognized him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award.   Justin has dedicated most of his professional - and personal - life to overturning wrongful convictions.  His passion has spurred him to create Innocence Projects all over the world and to train young lawyers to work to help free innocent people and transform the judicial system. There are an estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases globally, and cancer remains the second-leading cause of death in the United States, where more than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. What is cancer? According to current medical practices, cancer begins when cells acquire the ability to grow uncontrollably and ultimately invade and damage the body's normal tissues. Cancer development happens in multiple stages, from precancerous changes to malignant tumors.  Cancer can develop in a variety of different ways, due to a variety of different factors. Some we inherit, and others we are exposed to throughout our lives. It can be categorized into hundreds of different diseases based on the cells in which it arises. The current medical model basically asserts that some force - a toxin in the environment, genetic predisposition or random mutation - cause the body's cells to go haywire. Yet, only 5-10% of cancer is caused by genetics.  Scientists argue that the number of cancer deaths due to pollutants and toxins is not as high as we might expect and lifestyle and diet also do not account for the remaining 90% of cancer. The treatment for cancer has not really progressed in over 40 years.  We assault the sick and mutated cells with either surgery, radiation or toxic chemicals.  In a materialistic world view, it's too easy to tackle a problem in the body with a physical solution.  We want to walk a very careful line here.  When the body has manifested the symptoms of disease, oftentimes the only course of treatment left is to physically manipulate the body.  If you have a broken leg, the most likely course of treatment is to fix the leg.  If your body has cancer, you might have to physically remove the cancer to heal the body. But what if there's more to this equation?  What if cancer isn't just some random response to the environment, but also a physiological manifestation of emotional pain?  What if one of the sources of lasting emotional pain and eventually physical disease is childhood trauma?  According to this week's Quantum Revolution guest, Dr. Eric Kuelker, the mind is the most important part of you.  That is where you experience your emotions, and it controls the rest of the body.  If your mind is healthy, then you feel great, and your body is robust.  But if you have had multiple psychological injuries, you are 5 times more likely to develop depression than someone who has had none.  You are 310% more likely to have a heart attack, and 250% more likely to develop cancer.  Psychological injuries are the single biggest cause of mental health problems, and play a huge role in 7 of the 10 causes of premature death.  Are physical injuries really the deadliest of them all? Join us as Dr. Kuelker unpacks the science of how wounds to the mind hurt the body, and how we can achieve deep healing for both. If there is a correlation between childhood psychological injury and physical illness, we can easily do the math to determine the short term and long term cost of not taking good care of children.  Taking good care of children and supporting parents in being able to provide a strong foundation for their family is simply a good financial decision.  But there's another more insidious long-term cost to childhood trauma.  In our previous season of Quantum Revolution we spoke with Dr. Ervin Laszlo, a regular guest on our show, about how we literally have to be the change we want to see in the world.  When we embody a certain intention with attention, it literally causes the quantum world to organize itself in fields of information that, ultimately, manifest in the material world. When we do not heal trauma and we embody the energy of trauma, we cause the quantum world to organize itself in fields of information that continue to manifest as trauma in the physical world.  This can literally be in the physical body or expressed in other ways in our physical reality. If we are going to build an equitable, just, abundant, sustainable, peaceful world we need to start by tackling two essential fronts.  We need to help traumatized adults heal and we need to raise up our children in a way that keeps them from being traumatized in the first place. Healthy people are creative people. Creative people will find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today. Dr. Eric Kuelker is a psychologist who has done over 30,000 hours of therapy. He has been featured on TV, in books, in magazines, and in newspapers, and has taught at universities, hospitals, corporations, and more. He has coached therapists and is past president of a company that created the largest Internet resource for therapists to use with clients. Education: Going to School or Learning to Learn? with Dr. Naomi Fisher

Quantum Conversations: With Karen Curry Parker

We are taught that an education is a vital component of success.  We define education as going to school.  Whether through public schooling or the more expensive version of the same concept, private schooling, children are shepherded through a system that makes learning a 12 year long process of mastering how to follow the rules and perform for rewards. On today's Quantum Revolution episode, we're talking to Naomi Fisher, a clinical psychologist, about her book, Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning (https://www.amazon.com/Changing-Our-Minds-children-learning/dp/1472145518/)  According to Fisher, children today have easy access to an enormous amount of information, from all around the world. The news is not hidden from them and much of the news is not reassuring. In addition, most of them spend their days in an environment which makes very specific competitive requirements of them, and over which they have almost no power. When they refuse to cooperate with this, they are said to be suffering from school refusal, or perhaps school phobia. This is often thought of as an irrational anxiety, a bit like being scared of spiders. But is it irrational to refuse to go to school? Instead of assuming that distressed children must be disordered, let's think about whether school is an environment in which all children can thrive. About 33% of children in the school system manage to do well.  Some even thrive.  But what about the other 66%?  Even more frightening, approximately 30% of children in the United States have been diagnosed - and some are even medicated for - having learning problems.  Have we really bought into the idea that only 33% of us are smart and capable of success? Could 30% of children be incapable of learning or be somehow educationally “broken” and often in need of medication to make them compliant? We've talked to several scientists and thought leaders this season about the importance of a healthy foundation for life.  When we get disconnected from the value of life and the arc of time that is the lifespan of a human, it's easy to forget that being a child isn't a static state.  Children grow into adults.  Adults who are eventually tasked with running the world and creating the future we dream of. While we could blame computers or over scheduled lives for this crisis, we might also have to reckon with the idea that some of this crisis is being amplified by our education system.  We have a school system that has normalized punishments and rewards - a way of motivating children that has been proven again and again to actually DECREASE creativity and, over time, compliance. We have a culture that has normalized the experience of bullying and being bullied in school.  It's so normal that most of the young adult fiction that has won any kind of book award in the last few years centers around the theme of bullying.  Just this week in the news, a 10 year old Black girl with autism killed herself because she was being bullied.  I have long held the view that disempowered children have to seek their normal human need for power somewhere and that bullying is a dysfunctional response to feeling powerless in school and at home. We have normalized treating children the same way we treat our pets.  It's normal for teachers to use shaming language and yelling to manage a classroom of rowdy students. We use clickers to count how many times students interrupt the teacher, take away recess if they are too frisky in class, encourage them to go for extra credit and gauge their value based on how well they follow the rules and how much they are willing to do beyond the regular work in the classroom. 6.1 million children in the United States alone are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, a diagnosis rate that is not supported by post-mortem studies that show that the actual rate of brain changes consistent with ADD/ADHD is closer to .01 percent of the population. I could go on and on with a list of how the system is broken but I want to end on an inspired note. In Howard Gardner's original research on Multiple Intelligences, he came up with over 100 different kinds of giftedness that children exhibit.  He was told to narrow it down because we couldn't construct an education system complex enough to meet all the needs of all the different ways of learning. What if we can? What if the pathway to incorporating all these ways of learning is to let the children lead us?  To let us know what they need and how we can support them as they follow their natural, adaptive way of following the right educational path for them? What if we trust that children contain within them a deep connection to their own inner wisdom that sparks them to follow their innate, unique and natural path of learning  - the one that is theirs to follow?  What if we redefine the parameters of success and the skillset necessary for adulthood and instead give children the space, freedom and support to grow into the people they are born to be? Dr. Fisher in her book, Changing Our Minds brings together research, theory and practice on learning. It includes interviews with influential thinkers in the field of self-directed education and examples from families alongside practical advice. This essential guide will give you an understanding of why self-directed education makes sense, how it works, and what to do to put it into action yourself.  You may find the book on Amazon – click here or find it at your favorite book seller. Dr Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist and EMDR consultant specializing in responses to trauma. She works with adults and children, including those with diagnoses of special educational needs. She has a PhD in Autism. She has hands-on experience raising two children as self-directed learners. In 1925, a young student named Werner Heisenberg retreated to an island archipelago on the north coast of Germany called Helgoland to escape a terrible bout of hay fever. On the treeless, pollen-free island, Heisenberg made crucial breakthroughs for the creation of quantum mechanics, setting off a century of scientific revolution. Full of alarming ideas such as ghost waves, distant objects that seem to be magically connected, and cats that appear to be both dead and alive, quantum physics has led to countless discoveries and technological advancements. Today our understanding of the world is based on this theory, yet it is still profoundly mysterious. As scientists and philosophers continue to fiercely debate the meaning of the theory, theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli argues that its most unsettling contradictions can be explained by seeing the world as fundamentally made of relationships rather than substances. We and everything around us exist only in our interactions with one another. This bold idea suggests new directions for thinking about the structure of reality, and even the nature of consciousness. Rovelli makes learning about quantum mechanics an almost psychedelic experience. Shifting our perspective once again, he takes us on a riveting journey through the universe so we can better comprehend our place in it. Moderated by Sanders Kleinfeld. The frustrating part of science is that it takes time.  It takes time to validate an experimental process, duplicate the process enough times to verify that the results are relatively predictable, and to calculate and demonstrate the statistical probabilities. When it comes to doing research about health and wellness, it's hard to wait out the time for scientific validation for compassionate reasons.  The Hippocratic oath starts with the promise to “first do no harm." But the science behind healthcare can sometimes create a dilemma.  In today's Quantum Revolution episode, we're going to be talking with Dr. Peta Stapleton who has been building a body of scientific evidence behind the Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT.  Some of you may know it as “tapping."  What if the “doing no harm” means taking a risk and implementing something that seems anecdotally “harmless” and truly beneficial before science has time to validate a healthcare innovation?  Sometimes we have to stand in both places at once.  We can take a calculated, intentional risk to implement a process that is seemingly beneficial and - with caution - inform our clients that the science behind the choice is still emerging, while we wait for the patterns to be scientifically verified and validated over time. This process takes pioneers who are willing to take a leap of faith.  Both the practitioner and the patient have to be willing to trust that the experiment is worth trying and understand that the results are not guaranteed.  But then again, with healthcare, to a certain degree, the results are never quite guaranteed.  There is no one size fits all approach for treating people. Only statistical probabilities that treatments will work… The decision to take a calculated risk for the sake of healing is a personal choice, provided the outcome doesn't impact the well-being of others.  But, collectively, we have to understand that these calculated risks, while they may be end up being a “Hail Mary pass" on the personal level, are not scientifically valid.  While the practice of EFT tapping has not been around as long as acupuncture, one of the main components of EFT is the gentle tapping on those same energy lines, or meridians, used in acupuncture and acupressure. When combined with some current psychotherapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure Therapy, tapping yields amazing results. EFT was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s based on his study of work done by Roger Callahan in Thought Field Therapy (TFT). TFT was one of the first methods in what is now called Energy Psychology. As Craig realized the potential of this approach, he worked to refine and simplify the techniques while maintaining positive, measurable results: an evidence-based methodology. He ultimately developed a simple yet very profound set of techniques which he made available to everyone on his website emofree.com. Dr. Peta Stapleton is a registered clinical and health Psychologist and Associate Professor at Bond University (Australia) who embraces evidence-based and innovative techniques.  Dr. Stapleton is a world-leading researcher in Emotional Freedom Techniques (‘Tapping') and led a world first study investigating brain changes after EFT.  She was awarded the Harvey Baker Research Award for meticulous research (Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology), and was named 2019 Psychologist of the Year (Australian Allied Health Awards). Dr. Staplteon has also authored The Science Behind Tapping: A Proven Stress Management Technique for the Mind and Body (Hay House), which won Best Self-Help Book (2019 Best Book Awards, American Book Fest). Quantum computing is the latest “buzz-word” in the tech industry – with over $450 million of private funding investments made between 2017 and 2018 – but what are quantum computers and how will they spark the quantum revolution? Do they truly live up to the “hype” or are the challenges facing them not resolvable in the near future? In this episode, Tiger and aspiring physicist Harsh Babla interview Prof. Steven Girvin to learn about his cutting-edge research in the field, his perspective on Google’s recent quantum supremacy claim, venture capital investments in the field, national security concerns raised by quantum computers, the philosophical implications behind quantum computing, and more. This might not be your one-stop shop for understanding quantum physics, but it should provide you with the appropriate technical and theoretical background to understand many of the current debates. Steven Girvin is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics at Yale University. He’s a theoretical physicist known for his founding role in developing Circuit QED – an architecture now used by Google, IBM, Rigetti, and many other companies to build quantum computers. Prof. Girvin is a strong advocate for the “Second Quantum Revolution.” He explains to us that the first quantum revolution, in the early 1900s, gave us a unique understanding of the world, explaining the strange behavior of atoms and molecules. This kicked off a spree of innovation, revolutionizing information processing with the transistor, atomic clock, and laser. The past couple of decades have established a new technological era. While first suggested in the early 1980s, quantum computers are finally being physically realized and made commercially available. These devices use the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that would otherwise take classical computers exponentially longer to work out. As such, they’ve emerged as a natural paradigm to accelerate breakthroughs in drug development to save lives, innovative materials for renewable energy generation, financial strategies to live comfortably in retirement, cryptography techniques to ensure provably secure communication, and machine learning methods to supercharge hardware. While quantum computers might seem like the panacea for many society’s challenges, most quantum computers today aren’t always able to return correct answers for even the most modest calculations. Prof. Girvin explains that this is because current quantum systems are plagued by several pervasive physical constraints: a significant susceptibility to environmental errors, an inability to control multiple qubits simultaneously, a lack of robust error correction schemes, to mention a few. These constraints gradually scramble the information stored in the quantum bits (qubits), limiting the qubits’ lifetimes to only a few microseconds. Prof. Girvin is very hopeful for the industry to overcome these hurdles, but he’s worried that there’s currently a tremendous shortage of engineers and experts in the field. He believes the education system is overdue for important changes, to get young minds excited about working on quantum computing, without necessarily pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics. The perhaps slightly technical conversation with Prof. Girvin covers a wide range of topics, from quantum mechanics to education and investing in technologies with far-reaching international consequences. But our curiosity certainly does not stop there, and we end the interview with a short but deep discussion on philosophy. Mathematician Alan Turing was famous for publishing philosophy journals and debating with Wittgenstein. It seems that there’s much overlap between the scientifically and metaphysically unanswerable questions, so we ask Prof. Girvin how science has helped him reason through philosophical questions.

UA Science Lecture Series 2017 Rethinking Reality

Following its discovery, the quantum became central to our quest for a fundamental understanding of nature, from the structure of atoms and light to the Standard Model of particle physics, and beyond. As we learned how to tame, and increasingly how to domesticate the quantum, this also resulted in a technological `Quantum Revolution’ with a profound impact on our lives. This goes from the utterly devastating – with the invention of weapons capable of destroying civilization in the blink of an eye, to the most empowering – from medical imaging to the GPS, from the transistor to the laser, and from the internet to the smart phone. Following a brief review of these developments the lecture will focus on a more counter-intuitive aspect of quantum reality, what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance.” I will discuss how worldwide efforts at domesticating this elusive quantum attribute may lead to a `Second Quantum Revolution,’ with much promise for quantum communications, quantum metrology and quantum computing.
