Today on the podcast, I am joined by newly minted American Record Holder Bryce Hoppel! Bryce holds the American Record in the 800m, having run 1:41.67 in the Olympic final.  Byrce is the 2024 World Indoor Championship Gold Medalist. He's also a 2xOlympian and 2xNCAA Champ where he had a 21 race win streak. Bryce won the 2016 Texas 6A State Track & Field Championship with a time of 1:49.67, including an undefeated season in the 800 meters.  He then went on to Kansas, where he was a five-time All-American, two-time National Champion, and four-time Big 12 Champion. In 2019, Hoppel completed a sweep of both the indoor and outdoor NCAA 800m titles, becoming the first male from the University of Kansas to win an NCAA title in the event. Hoppel's 21 race unbeaten streak began during the indoor season in 2019, lasting until the USATF Outdoor Championships on July 25. Bryce competes professionally for Adidas and The Very Nice Track Club, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  In today's conversation, Bryce takes me through his Olympic performance, where he ran an American Record, the state of the 800m as an event, doping in sport, his dominant years at Kansas, joining VNTC, and much more! This one was a ton of fun and had a ton of wisdom in it. Do not miss this conversation! Tap into the Bryce Hoppel Special.  If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.  If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!  S H O W N O T E S -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ -My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en -My Newsletter: https://therunningeffect.substack.com

Carmen Graves began distance running after becoming a 5 time All-American in the 800m at Roanoke College where she also played soccer. After college she decided to opted to pursue pro running. She works in the non-profit sector as a Program Advisor for the Center of Work Education and Employment, coaches horizontal jumps at Englewood High School, and is the meet director for the Denver Twilight Mile. Despite a full schedule, she is training hard, competing regularly in bigger track events, and has her sights set on some big goals: making the US team in steeplechase and qualifying again for the Olympic Trials in 2024. "Last season was a big game-changer for me mentally. My confidence grew so much...I've manifested all of my success but just seeing it actually unfold is kind of crazy." Alia Armstrong joins Out Of The Blocks to discuss her journey to becoming one of the best U.S. hurdlers in the United States. She won the NCAA Championship in the women's 100 hurdles in 12.57. She went on to finish third at the USATF Outdoor Championships and qualified for the World Championships. In her first senior global championship, she clocked a personal best of 12.43 in the semifinal and then finished fourth in the final – just .08 seconds away from a medal. We appreciate Alia opening up about the hardships that come with being a student-athlete in the NCAA and how she dealt with disappointments like false starting in a championship race and knowing her moment was still to come. “I'm honestly so happy to get back to this level of running and feeling healthy running again and feeling like myself again. U.S. Champs was one of the most rewarding races of my career, honestly. With everything that I had been through the last four years, the deep, deep belief in myself never went away but there was a lot of doubt that I couldn't get past until I finally had the race result to prove it to me. That was that race. It did a lot for my confidence for the rest of the season for sure.” My guest for this episode is American record holder, Olympic silver medalist and world championship bronze medalist Evan Jager of the Nike Bowerman Track Club. I had him on as a guest back in 2019 as part of a panel with his teammates but this is the first time that he's on as a guest solo. Things are much different now. He missed much of the last four years due to injury but clawed his way back in 2022 to qualify for the World Championships with a runner-up finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June. He made the world championship final a month later and finished sixth overall. He shares his thoughts on that performance, the season overall and what he's learned throughout some of the lowest points in his career. We also touch on how he envisions the next two years going through the 2024 Paris Olympics if all goes well. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS GARMIN: Music. Training. Data. For this episode, we're joined by Katelyn Hutchison to discuss the dominance of Karsten Warholm. He is the two-time World 400m hurdles champion and Olympic champion from Norway. 2021 was the best season of his career as he twice broke the world record of 46.78 held by USA's Kevin Young since 1992. Warholm ran 46.70 to break it on July 1 and then ran one of the best races in history with a 45.94 in the final at the Tokyo Games. We discuss his road to greatness and how it all started with the multi-events at a young age in Norway. Track Snacks is presented by Hayward Magic. Everyone knows how much all of us in the CITIUS MAG family love track & field, and how much we enjoy sharing that love with you all. Well, we've got a few big love-sharing ideas in the works and it all takes place in Eugene, Oregon this summer. I think incredible things happen when you believe in yourself and stay in the here and now and give yourself the chance." On June 11, 2022, Brigham Young University graduate Courtney Wayment Smith made NCAA history. Competing at NCAA Championships, she ran the 3000m steeplechase in 9:16 — not only taking a commanding win, but breaking the collegiate national record (previously held by now-Olympian Courtney Frerichs) in the process. That time also put her at #5 on the all-time U.S. women's steeplechase list, behind Frerichs, Emma Coburn, Colleen Quigley, and Jenny Simpson. To celebrate, Courtney signed with an agent (Ray Flynn) and signed her first professional contract with On! The icing on the cake: Courtney competed at USATF Outdoor Championships this past weekend, where she finished second in the 3000m steeplechase, earning her a spot on Team USA heading into next month's World Athletics Championships. Needless to say, it's been an exciting summer for Courtney, who lives in Provo, UT, and will continue training with her BYU coach Diljeet Taylor. GUEST OVERVIEW: Two-time NCAA javelin champion and Academy record holder Dana (Pounds) Lyon is in her fifth season as an assistant coach for the Air Force track and field team. Lyon, who joined the coaching staff in October 2017 after four years in the Academy's strength and conditioning department, oversees coaching duties for the Air Force throwers, as well as managing the strength and conditioning program for the full squad. Although her first season coaching the full complement of throws was shortened by the cancellation of the outdoor season, Lyon still saw her two of her athletes impact the Academy's all-time standings during the indoor season, as Meghan Carbiener accounted for the fifth-best women's weight throw distance in Academy history (54'10¾”) and Jaret Prete broke the men's Freshman Class Record in that event four times, en route to a fourth-place throw of 57'3½” at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. Last season, Nick Oesterling was an NCAA Qualifier in the javelin throw and three throwers earned all-conference honors at the MW Outdoor Championships, while Hayden Bullock (180'9” in the discus, fifth) and Prete (193'1” in the hammer, eighth) debuted on Air Force's Outdoor Top 10 and Addyson Smith improved her all-time standing in the shot put, weight throw and hammer throw multiple times during the year. Lyon spent her first two seasons on staff focusing on the javelin. She saw four different athletes qualify to the NCAA West Preliminary during those two years, while Parker Spearman picked up a pair of runner-up finishes at the MW Outdoor Championships and the men accounted for four of the top six finishes in that event at the 2018 championship. Lyon also helped Spearman improve to No. 2 on the Academy's all-time standings (228'4”), while five teammates also surpassed the 200-foot barrier. On the women's side, Lyon coached Liz Jarvis to the 10th-best distance in program history (143'8”). Lyon, who graduated from USAFA in 2006 with a degree in systems engineering management, captured back-to-back NCAA titles in the javelin, was a three-time All-American, three-time MW champion and three-time all-conference selection. As a senior, she registered an Academy- and conference-record throw of 195'8" -- a distance that also accounted for the best collegiate throw in the nation during the 2006 season. In addition to her achievements against NCAA competition, Lyon captured a pair of titles at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships during that span. Following graduation, Lyon served two terms on the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (2006-08, 2012-14). She claimed the national title in the javelin at the 2007 USATF Outdoor Championships and capped that year with a fourth-place finish at the Pan Am Games and a spot on the World Championship team in Osaka, Japan. In addition, Lyon was the runner-up at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials – finishing just two inches shy of making the Olympic Team. Lyon, who spent the 2014-17 seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach and Physical Education instructor at the Academy, separated from the Air Force in 2017 to pursue a full-time coaching career with the Falcons. A certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Lyon worked with men's and women's cross country, women's basketball and women's soccer during those years in the strength and conditioning department, while also assisting with men's and women's track and field. She helped train members of four Mountain West championship teams (three track and field, one cross country) and 12 All-Americans. Prior to returning to the Academy, she served as an acquisitions officer (2008-10 at Hill AFB, Utah; 2012-14 at Peterson AFB, Colo.) and completed one combat tour in Afghanistan (2013). Lyon, who received a master's in sports business/management administration from Liberty University in 2014, is a member of the Air Force Athletics Hall of Fame's Class of 2015.

"We want to prepare for the World Championships, run fast before the World Championships to get confidence and then try to win the World Championships." Happy Friday! This is the eighth edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a CITIUS MAG staffer or friend share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, we're joined by Brazilian hurdle star Alison Dos Santos after he won the Prefontaine Classic men's 400m hurdle race in a world-leading time of 47.23. Last summer, he was part of one of the greatest races in track and field history – the Olympic 400m hurdle final. Norway's Karsten Warholm made history by becoming the first person to break 46 seconds with his victory (45.95). Rai Benjamin went 46.17 for the second-fastest time in history and the silver medal. Dos Santos rounded out the podium with a 46.72 for the bronze medal. We chatted more with him about how he got his start in track and field because he was competing on big stages as a teenager including winning a bronze medal at the 2018 World U20 Championships. He's earned gold medals at the South American Championships and the PanAmerican Games. His first senior global championship came in 2019 when he finished 7th at the World Championships in Doha – just a quarter of a second away from the bronze medal. I watched Dos Santos during the practice session at Hayward Field. He's six feet, seven inches tall and puts down tremendous force into the ground. While he's fierce and focused on the track, if you catch him anywhere off-the-track, he's always willing to stop and chat, crack some jokes, tell stories and even share a dance. Happy Friday! This is the fifth edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a fellow CITIUS MAG staffer share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, Mac Fleet (CITIUS MAG's video specialist) joins me to chat about Bahamian sprinting and its current stars. Shaunae Miller-Uibo is the reigning Olympic champion in the 400m. Steven Gardiner is the reigning Olympic champion in the 400m and has not lost a race since earning silver at the 2017 World Championships. Both sprinters have been working on their one-lap craft for a decade and now they're the best in the world. In Tokyo, Miller-Uibo became the first woman since Marie-José Pérec in the 90s to win back-to-back Olympic 400m gold medals. Gardiner became the first man from the Bahamas to win Olympic gold in the 400m. In total, the Bahamas has won 25 medals – 8 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze. That's more than the 16 medals they have at the Olympics across all sports. At the Games, they're always in the mix for a relay medal. They have six medals in the 4x100 and 4x400 combined. This country loves its sprints and we love a country that loves track and field. Track Snacks is presented by Hayward Magic. Hassan burst onto the scene in 2014 as she started putting The Netherlands on the podium at European championships. In the last eight years, she's gone on to break world records in the mile, road 5K and one-hour run. She's got some of the best range in the sport and demonstrated it best at the 2019 World Championships in Doha where she became the first person to win gold in the 1500m and 10,000m. In this episode, we're actually joined by the actual athlete. Marcell Jacobs is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100m, the reigning 60m world indoor champion and the European record holder in the men's 100 meters. Jacobs was one of the biggest surprises of the Tokyo Olympics when he ran the race of his life to become the first Olympic champion not named Usain Bolt since 2008. He proved it was no fluke by winning the World Indoor Championships in the 60m in a long-awaited clash against 2019 World Champion Christian Coleman. The fans are in for a real treat because they won't have to wait until July to see them go head-to-head again. This week. Prefontaine Classic race organizers announced Jacobs, Coleman, Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley, Olympic bronze medalist Andre De Grasse, Noah Lyles, Marvin Bracy, Kenndy Bendarek and Ronnie Baker would be part of the deepest 100m race in history. "I would tell them to stop having insignificant people have a significant impact on your life. I feel like that's what I would tell Nikki from a year ago. It's hard. I still tell myself that every day and it's a practice. I don't think there will ever be a time where a homophobic or transphobic comment doesn't hurt. It's practicing that over time. It's like 'Who is this person? They're so insignificant.' At the end of the day, that comment says more about them. Half the time, I just want to be like, 'Are you OK? It's 7 a.m.'" Nikki has been on my mind to bring onto the podcast for a long time. We're close friends and now felt like the right time to have them on. Nikki made some big life changes by packing their things and moving to Flagstaff, Arizona with their girlfriend Emma Gee and their pet dog Scout. They are now being coached by Mike Smith and training alongside Elly Henes and Olympian Rachel Smith. We talk a lot about how Nikki views these changes in their life, goals for the upcoming 2022 season and their activist work within the LGBTQIA community to advocate for transgender kids. ▶ Follow Dana: Twitter | Instagram | Tiktok ▶ Follow Nikki: Twitter | Instagram | SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Kyoku is a creamy and delicious breakfast shake that uses 16 superfoods to fill you up without feeling too full. This week's guest is Dani Aragon. She is a U.S. 800m and 1500m specialist who was a star at Notre Dame, a U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, an amazing human and so much more. In this episode, you'll hear a bit about what it's like being a pro runner at a training camp. She trains under coach John Trautmann and Tommy Nohilly with Empire Elite. The reason why I wanted to bring Dani on the podcast is that her post-collegiate career has been one with trials and tribulations. She had her stint with injuries but persevered through it all due to her self-belief. Hopefully, this can resonate with other athletes as a lesson in developing your confidence in the midst of intense training. ▶ Follow Dana: Twitter | Instagram | Tiktok ▶ Follow Dani: Twitter | Instagram | SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Kyoku is a creamy and delicious breakfast shake that uses 16 superfoods to fill you up without feeling too full. “I think that in order to do special things, especially in running, you really have to put yourself out there. And a lot of times, it doesn’t go how you want it to. But you can learn a lot from the times that don’t go right. When things go right, you’re like yeah, that was fun, that was easy… But the ones where you really have to work for it, you really have to put your head down and grind it out, go to a dark place, get it done — you grow so much more in those situations, and you take so much more away from those times.” What happens when you set big, dreamy, lofty goals — but when it counts the most, you fall short? That’s what this series, “Just Missed,” is about. These conversations are about dealing with disappointment. They are reminders that progress is never linear, and that it’s not always the big wins or the losses that define us, but the moments in between. Last week, we heard from former professional runner Julia Lucas. This week, HOKA NAZ Elite athlete Kellyn Taylor is here. Throughout her professional career, Kellyn has seen some major breakthroughs and has celebrated plenty of exciting moments. There was her win at the 2018 Grandma’s Marathon, where she ran a 2:24 just eight weeks after dropping out of the Boston Marathon. In 2019, she ran a personal best in the 5K, finished third at USATF Outdoor Championships, and placed seventh at the New York City Marathon. But along the way, she’s dealt with some tough stuff, too. There was that DNF in Boston. Injuries. And a handful of near-misses in pursuit of becoming an Olympian — most notably, in 2016, when she finished sixth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and then finished fourth in the 10K at the Track & Field Trials a few months later. Then, last year, she hoped to make the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team — again — but finished eighth. Now, Kellyn, who is also a mom, a foster parent, and a trained firefighter, is gearing up for this summer’s Track & Field Trials, where she again hopes to make the 10K team. Season 6 breaks the tape just in time for the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Iowa's own track Mecca; Drake Stadium. Mike Mahon sits down with Tim to talk about his career as media coordinator for the Drake Relays and press officer for the Olympic teams in 1992, 1996, and 2004. Mahon shares stories about some of the biggest names in USA track history as well as insights into this week's competitors. Drake Stadium will host over 100 Olympic caliber athletes and could see numerous US track records fall as America's fastest men and women come to town. Mike Mahon's career at Drake goes back to the 1970s, so he has just about seen it all in Des Moines. Mahon and Tim break down the big names that will be running this week including household names like Shelby Houlihan and Jenny Simpson and breakout stars, such as Indian Hills Community College's Kenny Bednarek. Bednarek burns up the track with a Moonlighter story of his own. The Wisconsin product found his way to Ottumwa, IA and emerged as one of the fastest men on Earth in both the 200 and 400.
