For Ep. 173, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me as we circle back to one of our favorite topics — niching down our reading into micro genres! In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. This episode is full of over 100 books for you to add to your TBR! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

As the state enters fall, COVID transmission is trending down. But there are still concerns over access to the ballot in the heat of a pandemic. Then, the pro-life 40 Day Vigil kicked off yesterday. We examine how the debate over reproductive rights is manifesting at the state's only abortion clinic.Plus in our Book Club, imagine that a DNA sample could tell you what you should be doing with your life. That's the premise of M.O. Walsh's novel, "Big Door Prize."Segment 1:After a summer of widespread transmission, state officials say COVID-19 infections are trending down as the state enters fall. State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs says doing enough of the "right stuff" helps reduce the R-naught value - a metric used to measure transmission. The steady decline in infections comes as Mississippians prepare to head to the polls. Absentee voting began this week, and a lawsuit currently in federal court seeks to ease the procedures for voting absentee. As the weather cools and flu season approaches, public concerns over crowded polling precincts are becoming more immediate. Governor Tate Reeves says he believes in-person voting can occur safely in Mississippi.Segment 2:Members of Pro-Life Mississippi and others are praying on the sidewalk outside of the Jackson Women's Health Organization - the only operating abortion clinic in Mississippi. They are joining in a campaign that features similar vigils in more than 500 cities across the country as part of the 40 Days for Life. The recent death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has elevated tensions around the issue of reproductive rights with Supreme Court scheduled to hear cases on abortion restrictions this fall. Many conservatives hope President Trump nominates a replacement that will help overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade decision that legalized abortion nationally. We hear from Pam Miller of Sidewalk Advocates for Life and Derenda Hancock of Pink House Defenders.Segment 3:Author M.O. Walsh instantly became a New York Times Best Selling author with his debut novel, "My Sunshine Away." The former MFA graduate from The University of Mississippi has a new book, "Big Door Prize." It's already garnering high praise. In it, DNA offers more than one's genetic history. Walsh explains. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Big Door Prize , the new novel by M.O. Walsh, poses this question to its readers: What would you do if you knew your life’s potential? Characters in the small town of Deerfield, Louisiana, are faced with this question when a mysterious machine appears in the local grocery store, reading and analyzing DNA, and inevitably challenging residents to gaze inward, searching for unrealized potential. As as fan of Walsh’s first novel, My Sunshine Away , I was very excited to to visit with M.O. Walsh about this new novel, The Big Door Prize. Here’s our conversation: - The Big Door Prize by M.O. Walsh is published by Dutton. Marginalia was produced at KMUW Wichita. If you like this podcast, please consider leaving a rating or review on Apple Podcasts . Review: Try and restrain yourself from flying through the pages of this wonderful novel. Instead savor this lush Louisiana mystery that takes you back to what life tasted like when you were still somewhat naïve to the ways of the world. Not just Southern, but American in its vivid Baton Rouge colors and scents, treetops and grasses, My Sunshine Away is the story of how the events of our youth profoundly affect us as adults. The last page is as satisfying as the first. A mystery you cannot wait to solve. —Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help The Avid Reader Show is sponsored by Wellington Square Bookshop in Chester County, PA.
