‘Who is Maud Dixon' by Alexandra Andrews is a a fun and fresh premise with lots of mild twists and turns, some obvious, others not so much. I can't really share the plot with you without spoiling anything, but that's also what's fun about this novel -- I had no idea where it was going.

Thanks for your support!* . . . . 2:16 - Would you rather read a really great, interesting page turning book that you've been waiting for, with your whole family in the same room at the same time? Or would you rather read a boring book that you're really not into, but you're alone in your room? 6:28 - Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros 6:32 - Would you rather be allowed to only read mediocre ACOTAR fanfic within the fantasy genre or have to give up fantasy entirely? 6:36 - A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Or would you rather us live down the street from each other, but we could never talk about books again. 12:22 - Would you rather have to listen to romance in your ears, all romance all the time in your ears. Or you have to play the most graphic scenes of your murdery books out loud through speakers in public while you walk around the neighborhood? 14:10 - Would you rather only listen to audiobooks at one speed for the rest of your life or never listen to audiobooks again? 16:08 - Would you rather your children, be entirely suggestible with regard to their reading or your reading partner Meredith, be entirely suggestible with regard to her reading? 18:11 - Would you rather never be allowed to keep a book on your shelves, Libraries are immediate read and pass on only or be allowed to keep whatever books you'd like on your shelves, but never be allowed to organize or categorize them in any way? 19:46 - Would you rather have to reread your least favorite book every month or never read your favorite book ever again? 20:29 - Me Before You by Jojo Moyes 20:40 - Blink by Malcolm Gladwell 20:41 - The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell 20:43 - Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell 20:57 - Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell 21:23 - The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher 21:48 - Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad 21:53 - Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier 22:04 - Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng 22:16 - Survive the Night by Riley Sager 22:59 - Would you rather never have to wait for the release of a book again or would you want to always have the opportunity to meet your favorite author in person and have a real conversation with them? 24:36 - Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros 25:23 - State of Terror by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny 27:19 - Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett 27:19 - Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett (Pre-order link) 27:43 - Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree 28:25 - Would you rather never get to read in the hammock again or never get to read in front of a crackling fire again? 30:28 - Would you rather be a writer who wrote an amazing debut, but then had a sophomore slump or would you rather be a writer who wrote a breakout first book, had an amazing follow up and every book has been better than the last… but each book features a mythical creature with two peens? 32:53 - Would you want to be an author that puts out one incredible book that wins all the prizes, but it's also a commercial success, or would you rather be an author that writes a very beloved and well selling series, but has a much smaller, beloved, but smaller audience? 37:43 - Who is Maud Dixon by Alexandra Andrews 38:25 - Would you rather read in an isolated cabin with no fireplace? This week we chat with fellow book lover and grant writer Bethany Planton who runs a book club for fellow members of her profession. When she began her own consulting company, she met several other grant writers from around the country through a twitter chat, and they quickly realized that besides sharing a profession, they also shared a love of books. The Grant Pro Bookclub started 6 years ago and has always met virtually, long before the rest of us picked up on the idea when the COVID pandemic began. We talk to Bethany about her undying love of Little Women and Louisa May Alcott, her role as a tourist ambassador for her city, and why it's never too cold for ice cream. We're celebrating fall in the Jen Hatmaker Book Club (and for those of you who live in the deep south like Jen, our sympathies for the fall leaves you won't see). Whether it's actual fall or the idea of fall that gives you that cozy-up-with-a-blanket-in-your-favorite-chair-with-a-good-book feeling, we're here for it. And we've got just the book for your fall reading–our book of the month is none other than Who Is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra Andrews. Alexandra is a journalist, an editor, and copywriter who works from New York and Paris, and this is her very first book! We think she hit it out of the park–and a lot of people feel the same. Who Is Maud Dixon? was named best mystery novel of the year by the New York Times, best book of the year by Time Magazine and has gotten kudos from NPR, Publishers Weekly–and host of other publications.. Can we take a minute to imagine your very first book being met with that level of success? It's so exciting what she's accomplished, and you'll love hearing how she crafted such a page turner–it will surprise you and there's more than one twist, which is the best kind of thriller. If you're not already a member of the book club, there's so much more to discover in the conversations around amazing books we're reading together. Thought-Provoking Quotes:“I'm always inspired the same way, which is reading another book and thinking, oh, I wish I could do that. And for a long time it was mostly nonfiction books and I really wanted to be Joan Didion.” - Alexandra Andrews “There are a lot of women, or people in general, not just women, who've had a tough upbringing, they've been up against a lot of obstacles, and how much leeway do they deserve, and how much can we really blame them for not having the tools to go after success in ordinary ways?” - Alexandra Andrews “I'd been writing for so long and without any success, and even when I just finished the first draft, I was so happy I finished the first draft. And then when I got an agent, I was just thrilled I had an agent. And then when it sold, every step has felt like icing on the cake.” - Alexandra Andrews Alexandra's Links Alexandra's website Alexandra's Instagram Books & Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeJoan Didon The Talented Mr. Ripley Elena Ferrante Patricia Highsmith

Jason, Maddy, and Kirk pull out their reading glasses for the very first Triple Read! This week, they discuss the brilliant novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, a decades-sprawling book about the epic journey of a boy and a girl from childhood friends to hit video game developers. The gang dives into the book's themes, its twists and turns, and all the fictional video games that make Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow such a joy to read. For today's episode I got to sit down with Chelsea Hoffman and Yolanda Skeete, founders of Thrillers by the Book Club. I can tell you from personal experience that both of these women are sweet and kind in real life, but they have an affinity for, as Chelsea calls it, murder-y books. They found each other online and formed a book club, which has morphed into a real-life book group with 27 chapters around the world. I asked them to join me for a Thriller-Palooza, because I wanted the lowdown on the best of the best in the world of thrillers, and holy moly, did these ladies ever deliver. On this week's show, we're setting up Bria Schirripa. Bria is a product manager by day and a writer and creator by night. She documents the latest happenings in New York's charming West Village neighborhood on her page, the Bleecker Street Beat. Naturally, her dream Saturday consists of a walk in the neighborhood, in addition to drinking an overpriced latte and hoping for a Timothee Chalamet sighting. Bria is an avid reader, and recently loved the novels The Boys Club by Erica Katz, Who is Maud Dixon by Alexandra Andrews, and Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner, but generally doesn't love fantasy novels. A self-proclaimed snob about pasta, her dream vacation would be in Florence. She thinks she would have thrived in the late ‘70s and ‘80s thanks to big hair and disco. In Episode 116, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me to talk about niching down from traditional genre categories into the micro genres we love. Over the past year, I have picked up on some key themes and types of books that I can generally count on for successful reading. Today, we're putting them all in one special episode as Susie and I bring you a delightfully overflowing list of the micro genres that work for us, books from each, and why we love them. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Happy New Year and welcome back to the Red Fern Book Review! Amy reviews two of the biggest books of 2021: Who is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra Andrews and Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty. Both are bestselling mysteries that are executed very differently. Who is Maud Dixon? is a clever thrill ride that combines an edgy whodunit reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith with the fun and accessibility of Sophie Kinsella. Apples Never Fall is the much anticipated novel by the author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers. The novel focuses on missing matriarch Joy Delaney, her four adult children, husband, and a mysterious houseguest.Books and media discussed:River Cafe Table 4, podcastTig and Cheryl: True Story, podcastWho is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra AndrewsApples Never Fall by Liane MoriartyStrangers on the Train by Patricia HighsmithStrangers on the Train, movie, directed by Alfred HitchcockThe Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia HighsmithCasablanca, movie, directed by Michael CuritzRemember Me? You might remember this bonus episode, where Jennie Nash and I discussed “Shiny Thing Syndrome” and I was dubious about whether working with other writers as a book coach was a great side gig or a distraction for ME. Since then, I’ve been trying on the coach role in a number of small ways, and I’ve decided to go all in. Alexandra Andrews' debut novel hit the market this past March. It follows the naive Florence Darrow as she navigates the literary world in NYC. Ultimately we end up with a couple unexplained mental breakdowns, a few dead bodies & a nice publishing deal. Who Is Maud Dixon? is a tale of literary identity theft. And that’s about all I can tell you. When I spoke with Alexandra Andrews about her novel, I assured her we would avoid plot spoilers. But that didn’t stop us from talking about some of the characters, identity, her editing process, and the fact that Who Is Maud Dixon? is Hollywood bound.

What a great time we had gabbing with this debut author about her recently published (and much buzzed-about) novel... almost as great a time as we had reading it!
In this episode, we’re having a conversation about finding time for unpaid work and projects. You know, those things we truly enjoy doing—whether for our own development or personal fulfillment or as a volunteer in an organization—but that can be difficult to make time for during busy days filled with paid work.Like most of our translator and interpreter colleagues, it comes as no surprise that we love the work we do and we sometimes can’t believe that we get paid to do it. But there are also other projects and goals we have that we want to devote time to that we don’t actually earn any money doing. These are things that will help you grow but that are so easy to push aside for a "quieter" day.For example, maybe you have a blog you write, a special project or area of study you’re trying to develop, a hobby you want to lean into, or maybe you volunteer for an organization that means a lot to you. Whatever the project or goal you’re working toward, it can sometimes be hard to find time to work on these things that don’t pay the bills but are fulfilling. So, how do we make time for these projects and goals? We don’t have a secret recipe for success but we’re happy to share our approach and learn what others are doing. Here’s what we discuss in this episode:• What projects we spend time on and why we try to make time for them• How to decide how much time you can devote to unpaid projects and how often you can work on them• How to handle those times when a certain project takes more time than you expected• How to make time for hobbies and overcome that sense of guilt that comes with devoting time to something fun instead of working longer hours or earning more money• How to respond to requests or proposals to work on something that is completely unpaid and that may take up a good bit of your timeResources we mentioned in this episode:• Madalena’s website, courses, and blog• American Translators Association• No-Fail Communication: 13 Workplace Communication Problems and How to Fix Them by Michael Hyatt • No-Fail Meetings: 5 Steps to Orchestrate Productive Meetings (and Avoid all the Rest) by Michael Hyatt• Who is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra AndrewsSee the full list of links and resources for this episode:https://smarthabitsfortranslators.com/podcast-episodes/42
EP108: My latest guest is Thérèse Plummer, an actor and award-winning audiobook narrator, who lives and works in The Big Apple. She has recorded over 500 audio books for various publishers and won the 2020 Audie Award for her collaborative work on "The Only Plane In The Sky: An Oral History of 9/11" by Garrett M. Graff which garnered Audiobook of the Year! Thérèse was a complete stranger to me when we logged onto Zoom for this interview as I had coordinated the interview through her publicist, but we instantly connected. She's the first actor I've interviewed and I so enjoyed hearing her backstory from being a rebel as a teenager to making the decision, at the last minute, to not go the traditional route of college, and instead followed an inner calling, moving to New Your City to become an actor. We cover a lot of topics that I think you'll find relatable, but the main thing I came away with is that I believe Thérèse is an old soul, wise beyond her years from a very young age. I found her reflections about life to be quite insightful. Clever, cunning, and diabolical in the best possible way. Anyone longing for a good old-fashioned thrill need look no further Ann Patchett Celebrated, bestselling, elusive...who is Maud Dixon? Florence Darrow wants to be a writer. Correction: Florence Darrow IS going to be a writer. Fired from her first job in publishing, she jumps at the chance to be assistant to the celebrated Maud Dixon, the anonymous bestselling novelist. The arrangement comes with conditions - high secrecy, living in an isolated house in the countryside. Before long, the two of them are on a research trip to Morocco, to inspire the much-promised second novel. Beach walks, red sunsets and long, whisky-filled evening discussions...win-win, surely? Until Florence wakes up in a hospital, having narrowly survived a car crash. How did it happen - and where is Maud Dixon, who was in the car with her? Florence feels she may have been played, but wait, if Maud is no longer around, maybe Florence can make her mark as a writer after all...
