We welcome onto today's show Bella Gonzales, an accomplished director of photography whose remarkable work spans across several prestigious series. Bella is known for her exceptional contributions to episodic series such as FX's Fargo, Apple TV+'s The Big Door Prize, and Hulu's PEN15. Her unique vision and technical prowess have made her a standout talent in the industry, and her recent projects are a testament to her skill and creativity. On the show, Giles Alderson and Dom Lenoir chat with Bella about: What lenses she uses, camera angles and working with different directors. She talks about what light means to story and why should pick your battles in prep and on set. We also dive into blocking, floor plans and not coming from a world of 'no'. We talk Alien, the new TV show she has just finished working on and what is like being part of history and we dive deep into the making of Fargo. For the new Apple TV+ series, Me, Bella was the sole director of photography for the pilot and all 10 episodes of this series, working closely with director Michael Dowse. Her role allowed her to set the show's visual tone, treating it with the care and precision of a feature film. For Fargo Bella also previously worked on season 5 of Fargo, where she built on her previous contributions to the series and her work and relationship with showrunner, Noah Hawley. She lensed episodes 3&4 of the new series which is out now on Apple TV+ and stars Juno Temple and Jon Hamm. Josh Segarra joins Mase & Sue to talk about the quirky, feel-good APPLE TV series, THE BIG DOOR PRIZE. They discuss how the theme of the show reflects their real lives, what fueled his character's transformation in Season 2, why people connect to the show, the dynamic of working with showrunner David West Read, his love of professional wrestling and how it was implemented in an episode. Plus, how his parents affected his career, his role of Lance in THE OTHER TWO, the art of auditioning and throwing out first pitches and singing National Anthem. We can't wrap-up a deep-dive into How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days without talking about the most memorable part of the movie – the yellow dress Kate Hudson wears in the climax of the film. And while we're at it, it's worth obsessing over all the costumes in this film because this is a movie steeped in fashion. To help us unpack the craft of costume design, we're welcoming Colin Wilkes on the show. Colin Wilkes is a costume designer who has designed theater, opera, puppetry, TV and film in many genres. She has her BFA in Costume Design from CalArts and her design work on rom-coms includes the 2020 Hulu movie Palm Springs and the 2022 Netflix movie Look Both Ways. She's currently the designer for the Apple+ show Big Door Prize. ---If we give you butterflies, consider supporting us on Patreon! https://letterboxd.com/needsintro/ mailto:needssomeintroduction@gmail.com In this episode of 'Need Some Introduction', host Victor delves into the new Apple TV+ science fiction thriller 'Dark Matter', based on Blake Crouch's novel. He compares the series to the book, expressing satisfaction with its faithful adaptation while foreseeing potential filler in the show's long episodes. Victor also discusses the mixed critical reception of 'Dark Matter' and its exploration of alternate lives, a theme resonating in pop culture's recent fascination with multiverses. Additionally, Victor champions 'The Big Door Prize', another Apple TV+ series based on a novel. Despite its low popularity, he praises its exploration of personal destiny and recommends it for its unique storytelling and emotional depth. Victor then discusses his relationship with Blake Crouch's works, recommending other shows like 'Shining Girls', 'Constellation', and discussing the concept of doppelgangers through various recommendations. The episode also includes a 'science corner' where Victor explains quantum superposition and multiverses, providing a deeper understanding of the science behind the concepts explored in 'Dark Matter' and similar narratives. 00:00 Introduction to Dark Matter: A New Sci-Fi Thriller 00:09 Initial Thoughts on Dark Matter and Its Adaptation 01:05 Exploring the Multiverse in Pop Culture 01:32 The Science Behind Dark Matter and Multiverse Theories 01:38 Diving Into The Big Door Prize: An Underrated Gem 02:29 Apple TV Plus and Its Literary Adaptations 08:17 Dark Matter: Breaking Down the First Two Episodes 40:20 Recommendations: Doppelgangers and Alternate Realities 43:26 Science Corner: Understanding Superposition and Multiverses 50:06 Wrapping Up and Looking Ahead

In this episode, Blaine and Donovan discuss the recent change in the video schedule for Taking It Down On Video (1:22) before they then delve into the setting of Alaska in True Detective: Night Country to answer the question: is it attempting too much (3:06)? To end, the two discuss various topics, including Apple TV+ originals, and other TV shows that could play a role for the podcast going forward (28:30), such as Manhunt, Constellation, Sugar, The Big Door Prize, Dark Matter, and The Lady in the Lake. Look at TV from a different angle: Taking It Down is the The Alabama Take's TV and streaming podcast from irrelevant Southern thinkers. Audio podcast is out every Tuesday morning and can be streamed above or with the links at the bottom of the page. The video component of the podcast airs on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 p.m. CST. Takeaways The change in the video schedule for Taking It Down on Video has been made to align better with the coverage of the challenge and to provide a separate entity for challenge discussion. The setting of Alaska in True Detective allows for an exploration of mental illness in a dark environment. The supernatural element in the show could benefit from a more subtle approach, with hints and glimpses rather than jump scares. The engaging endings of the episodes create anticipation for the next one and keep viewers hooked. The characters' mental states, such as Navarro's bleeding ears, add to the mystery and intrigue of the show. The unresolved storylines and the introduction of new characters, like Otis Heiss, leave viewers wanting more. Other TV shows, such as those on Apple TV, offer potential for exciting and compelling storytelling. The search for John Wilkes Booth after he kills Lincoln is a fascinating historical drama. Apple TV+ has a variety of original shows, including Constellation, Sugar, The Big Door Prize, Dark Matter, and The Lady in the Lake. Ash Wednesday is a significant day for Elvis Perkins fans. The Alabama Take brings you an entire family of podcasts and writings -- all with no ads! But we still have some bills to pay. If there's nothing in the shop to interest you, feel free to make a donation: venture to Buy Me A Coffee or visit our Venmo and PayPal to help to keep the site, the writings, and podcasts going.

Start with Shakespeare's "star-crossed" lovers and fold in the songs of Swedish pop hitmaker Max Martin… what do you get? The hit Broadway musical & Juliet, currently running at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York and nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. The show imagines what would happen if Juliet woke up after Romeo's death and decided not to end it all. Instead, she goes on a trip to Paris with some new friends, including Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway. Juliet discovers that Romeo isn't really dead… but he's also not exactly boyfriend material. And every so often, the characters break into song with Max Martin's hits for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and Katy Perry. The writer behind this mash-up is David West Read. He previously served as writer and executive producer of the comedy series Schitt's Creek, and he created The Big Door Prize and the forthcoming Brother from Another Mother, both running on AppleTV+. Host Barbara Bogaev talks with Read about & Juliet… and the concussion that inspired it. Get tickets to & Juliet here, and tune in to the Tonys broadcast on Sunday, June 11 at 8 pm ET on CBS.
