In this special Circle Back, we revisit some previously shared micro genres from our two past Micro Genres We Love episodes and introduce two additional micro genres from a Patreon bonus episode not yet heard on the big show! We give examples that define each micro genre for us and share new books we've read that fit into these niches. Plus, we share books for that DIDN'T work for us. I was sitting with her after this conversation and she shared how she feels like a completely different person, and is looking at where her life is ready to change from work to relationships, they all are changing because SHE is different! This episode is so near and dear to my heart because I was the person with a checklist doing all the things "right" and not seeing the results because I wasn't leaving space for me and my inspiration! That was a big piece that Stephanie took away as well, and is excited to dive into another retreat this year! I cannot wait to hear what you take from this episode and if you are ready to dive in and say YES to a retreat you can connect with my on Instagram at https://instagram.com/embodied.mystic.retreats Support the show

The fact that Donald Trump is the front-runner for the G.O.P. nomination in 2024 has created a chasm in our politics. In the past, Democrats and Republicans at least understood why members of the other party liked their chosen candidates. Most conservatives weren't confused why liberals liked Barack Obama, and vice versa for George W. Bush. But for a lot of Democrats, it feels impossible to imagine why anyone would cast a vote for Trump. And as a result, the two parties don't just feel hostile toward each other; they feel increasingly unknowable.Kristen Soltis Anderson is a veteran Republican pollster, a founding partner of the opinion research firm Echelon Insights and a CNN contributor. She spends her days trying to understand the thinking of Republican voters, including hosting focus groups for New York Times Opinion. So I wanted to get her insights on why Republicans like Trump so much — even after his 2020 electoral loss, the Jan. 6 insurrection and over 90 criminal charges.

Tune in as Matt Cole (Debate This!, Avenge This!) takes a seat at the table to chat about Marvel's Runaways, the MCU-adjacent three-season TV show that follows a group of six high schoolers as they learn about a murderous scheme that their seemingly upstanding parents have been committing together for years and proceed to do all they can to thwart it. Having premiered in 2017 on Hulu before ending in 2019, it was promoted as a Marvel Studios property despite never giving nods to Iron Man, Hulk, Infinity Stones, or anything of the sort once (though the Darkhold, which you may recall from WandaVision, does pop up). On top of breaking down this under-the-radar series, the hosts arch their eyebrows at the questionable category of comedy that punches down on activism, comment on the upcoming animated series Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and repeatedly lament how much the show should have lasted one or more seasons. Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi, Elizabeth Hurley, Clarissa Thibeaux, Kip Pardue, and Julian McMahon. To kick off book four, we're checking in on a Brenna fave with a doozy of a hook: Runaways, which features a group of kids who discover their parents are supervillains and set out to stop them. Joe isn't quite as enamoured, in part because the art doesn't sit right with him (leading to a discussion of comic sizing and who the intended audience for this imprint was). Still, there's something laudable about a book that presents a tragic backstory for its characters and then lets them move past it.Less successful is Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's TV series, which takes ages to get going and mistakenly spends too much time on the parents. While it has a sunny teen vibe and great music, and Rhenzy Feliz and Lyrica Okano are well cast, the show is simply too labourious to get into!Wanna connect with the show? When Gossip Girl burst onto our screens in 2007, it became an instant obsession for both Kaley and Sarah. Based on the popular book series by Cecily von Zeigsar, the show had great DNA; it was produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of The OC fame. The story of coastal elite children - who hung out at burlesque clubs and wore overpriced footwear - was an explosive hit, spurning fashion trends and turning its stars, Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, into It Girls. But revisiting this series in the era of Me Too, it's obvious GG had flaws from the get-go. In this week's episode, Sarah and Kaley ask if Gossip Girl has held up, and ultimately explain why it hasn't... Chat with us! Twitter: @sarahsahagian @kaleyames Instagram: @theholdup_pod @kaleyames

Is the third time the charm? After The Fault in our Stars and Paper Towns, Brenna and Joe are checking back into Manic Pixie Dream Girl territory with John Green's problematic first novel Looking for Alaska, which was just adapted by The O.C. and Gossip Girl scribes Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage into an eight episode Hulu series. Up for discussion: does the book contain enough sign posts that protagonist Miles' perspective should not be trusted? Does the book suffer without its titular object of affection? And how has the controversy around this novel driven Green's entire career? Meanwhile, in the film (as Brenna keeps referring to it), we discuss an odd case of streaming creep, the decision to re-structure the novel's "Before" and "After" section and Brenna dives into the adaptation's iffy track record on race and class. Plus: has Joe fallen for John Green's ploys by falling in love with Alaska? In Homework: Joe keeps the Green "love" alive by discussing the trailer for the author's anthology film Let It Snow, which debuts on Netflix Nov 8. Meanwhile, Brenna tackles reader mail.Want to connect with the show? Use #HKHSPod on Twitter:Brenna: @brennacgrayJoe: bstolemyremoteOr send us something longer at hkhspod@gmail.com. Marvel's Runaways, or simply Runaways, is an American web television series created for Hulu by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. Back before Iron Man was leading the Marvel Cinematic Universe to massive success, there was Brian K. Vaughn's Runaways. Originally planned to jumpstart the MCU the teen-focused series has finally made it to live-action. Telling the story of a group of high schoolers who happen upon their parents performing a secret ritual that leads them to discover their parents are actually villains. The teens come together to form their own odd Breakfast Club like "superhero" team. Comprised of the boy genius, tech inventor, telepathically dinosaur linked girl, a girl with massive strength, a magician, and a girl who has mysterious alien-like powers the teens aren't just forced to take on their parents but they are forced to get along with each other. Marvel's "Runaways" works best with its interaction between the kids and that is well mirrored with the parents interacting with their own group. Both teams are complex, well written and acted. Marvel's Runaways is yet another hit in the ever-growing MCU freight train. Directed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the series has been renewed for a second season and expanded from 10 episodes to the standard Marvel 13.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5939723/advertisement
