For many small to medium-sized arts venues, the last few years were some of the toughest to navigate. The COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain struggles, and the contracting of the global economy all played a part. Many venues struggled to stay open or were forced to close down permanently, and ultimately support from COVID era stimulus packages saved the industry from mass collapse. Independent venues play important roles as third spaces for social engagement, but they also generate jobs and contribute greatly to economic activity.rnrnFormed during the pandemic, the National Independent Venue Association recently hosted its first conference in Cleveland in 2022; and the Cleveland chapter just recently announced the Cleveland Music Census--an effort to gather measurable data on the economic impact of independent venues.

Above The Basement - Boston Music and Conversation

I saw my first show at Once Ballroom in Somerville a few years ago, entering the building, wondering if I just walked into a bar mitzvah, or as JJ Gonson first thought when she saw the room for the first time, a high school prom. But on the raised stage I saw the band, Dada. That was only the first time among many. Mostly I was there for the infamous Boston Emissions Rock and Roll Rumble, where the place transformed into a community of music fans and bands who supported each other and the music for which Boston is famous.JJ Gonson saw the room not as a ballroom, but as an opportunity to share her love of music with the world. That may sound a bit cheesy, but JJ is all about the music.Starting off as a rock photographer, (she is responsible for the Elliott Smith self-titled album cover as well as his Roman Candle album), she eventually began to manage Elliott's band Heatmiser and then Elliott himself before he left us all too soon.ONCE was to become a catering company but soon morphed into one of the great, unique independent venues in Boston. COVID hit hard, unfortunately, and ONCE had to close. But the community JJ worked so hard to pull together through music, well, pulled together to raise money to try and keep ONCE alive. And while the venue did eventually have to close, she was able to go virtual with the ONCE Virtual Venue to give musicians the ability to continue playing for people. It also gave JJ the opportunity to search for another location, which she found at Boynton Yards. I'll let her talk about that. But JJ continues to fight for venues, Boston music, and the musicians that make up this amazing city, through her incredible work with Save Our Stages and the National Independent Venue Association.Suffice it to say that we are all fortunate to have our friend JJ Gonson on our side.

Even if you can't contribute, we hope you'll tell a friend or two about it.Everyone in the music industry remembers that chilly day in early March when Austin's SXSW announced it was pulling the plug on this year's festival. Reading the news from a distance, it felt surreal—a confirmation that an invisible menace we didn't quite understand away was much closer than we thought, and it was going to effect all of us. Six months later, our cities are slowly opening back up, for better or for worse—but America's live music industry is still on pause, with no clear indication of when we'll be able to gather together in public again and feel the mysterious sensation of a bassline vibrating up through the floor. For independent artists who rely on touring as their primary source of income, the pandemic has been financially devastating; for independent venues who host them when they come to town, it's an extinction-level threat. Part of the problem is that nobody knows when it'll be safe to open for business again, mostly because nobody knows when we'll finally have access to a vaccine. But the live music industry runs on razor-thin margins to begin with, and even with no money coming through the door, the bills for mortgage, rent, utilities, and other operating expenses are still coming due. If music is an important part of your life, the consequences are almost too upsetting to fathom: In a survey by the National Independent Venue Association, an organization uniting 2,800 entertainment establishments and promoters from across the U.S. in the fight to save America's stages, some 90 percent of independent venues reported that they will be forced to shutter permanently in a few months without relief from the Federal government. James Moody, owner of beloved Austin venue The Mohawk, was on the ground the day the city became ground zero for the pandemic in the music industry. On this week's episode, he takes us behind the scenes to describe what the past six months have been like for the people who work tirelessly to bring music to our cities every night of the week—and what the pandemic means for the Austin scene and the communities that depend on it. We also talk with Audrey Fix Schaefer, director of communications at NIVA and Washington D.C.'s iconic 9:30 Club, about why the fate of live music in this country rests in part on an upcoming vote in Congress regarding two pieces of legislation, the RESTART Act and the Save Our Stages Act—and how the crisis has brought a notoriously competitive corner of the music industry together. In this episode of the Lone Sound Magazine Podcast, we talk about the making of his sophomore album "Glad You Made It" (State Fair Records), released last month. He tells me about his 2019 tour through Scandinavia following the success of his debut LP "Wish You Were Here," and why his surprisingly large fan base there has such an appreciation for Texas songwriters. We talk about what he's been up to during quarantine, which has been quite a lot: recording with Ottoman Turks (the other band he's in); preparing to record his third album (he already has the title!); working with State Fair Records label; and launching High Wide & Handsome, a size-inclusive clothing brand. Thanks to the National Independent Venue Association for all that they are doing to #SaveOurStages. NIVA recently endorsed the bipartisan Save Our Stages Act to offer relief to independent venues affected by the pandemic. Read more and PLEASE take action here. Please consider supporting The Other Ones Foundation, an Austin-based nonprofit that provides aid, employment and case management to people experiencing homelessness. You can stream Joshua Ray Walker's music on all platforms, and you can even purchase the latest album on vinyl (check your local record store first, or get it on Amazon). Hyacinth Belcher, president/owner of production company Onstage Systems, talks to host Jaimie Siegle about how she's been staying sane during quarantine and how her business — which survives off of tours, festivals, and live music events — has had to pivot during the pandemic. From staff furloughs to drive-in shows, Hyacinth shares her take on the industry. I also loved hearing about her Burning Man experiences, and how her Burning Man camp is helping to bring a virtual Black Rock City experience to viewers next month! **A HUGE THANK YOU to the National Independent Venue Association (@nivassoc) and the Houston Arts Alliance for sharing their messages in hopes that together, we can #SaveOurStages and keep the creative industry thriving.** If you've been enjoying our podcast, please support us by rating, subscribing, and sharing with your friends and family! Salim Nourallah is totally aware of the fact that the phrase “Texas music” carries with it a certain connotation, and he's been defying the stereotype since he figured out how to make a living as a musician. An award-winning producer, studio owner, record label co-founder and solo artist, Salim is a lot of things. At his core, though, he's a songwriter; just check out the volume of music he's released on Bandcamp. Aptly titled “Let's Be Miserable Together,” his latest EP was released in May of this year and we're sharing a catchy tune from it in this week's episode. Salim also tells me about Pleasantry Lane, a modern recording studio with a mid-century modern feel that you wouldn't know existed (and you wouldn't be able to find) unless someone told you. It's also the headquarters of the label Palo Santo Records, whose niche is discovering up-and-coming artists not necessarily from Texas. We talk about how his friendship with Dallas musician Rhett Miller developed, and he gives me the back story on a few songs on which he's worked with Rhett and the Old 97's. (Also, if you are a fan of the Old 97's, Salim has some scoop about their new album “Twelfth.”) Finally, the National Independent Venue Association needs our help, and the Houston Arts Alliance would love your participation at its Arts Town Hall. (NIVA recently endorsed the #SaveOurStages Act to offer relief to music venues affected by the pandemic. Read more about that here.) We cover a lot of ground in this week's episode with Fort Works Art's Lauren Childs—gallery owner, artist, mom, and constant supporter of the arts. Her gallery quickly became one of my favorite places in Fort Worth when it opened 2016, first for its unique roster of artists but eventually for its continued dedication to bringing international attention to Texas artists. In Episode 106, we talk about some of my favorite artists from previous Fort Works exhibitions (Dan Lam, Marshall Harris, Kate Simon), as well as a few of my favorite things: art activism, Art Basel, the Burning Man experience, and how we can help one another as we navigate these uncertain times. We also explore the collective nature of the Fort Worth arts scene, the state of art in 2020, and how she's remained busy organizing fundraising efforts for the city's creative community through her nonprofit foundation, Gallery of Dreams. (Head's up: the latest grant initiative for musicians is called Sounds of Resilience—details here.) Thanks for listening! EPISODE 50!!!! We speak with Russell Keith - owner of The Grey Eagle Music Hall and The Grey Eagle Taqueria.  We talk about the plight of independent music venues and how they have to wait right now, deal with lost revenue that won't be recouped for some time and try to find creative ways to keep income coming in.  We speak about the importance of music venues and everyone involved in them and how that loss to our cultural lexicon is being felt.  We establish the cost associated with owning a venue and all of the people who are affected by this long term closure.  Russ describes what they are doing to be safe and how, even amidst uncertainty, they are planning to have shows at smaller capacities once they are able to do so.   He discusses the streaming of shows he has been doing and how , while not economically viable for the venue or the artists, did create more opportunities as to how to deliver music to more people. Russ is hopeful and he reminds all of us that we have to band together to save independent music venues and the artists who work there and all of the employees who make those shows happen.  Find out more about the National Independent Venue Association and what you can do to help here:  NIVA Go buy a taco and some merch from the Grey Eagle and let's make sure that they are still around for all of us!
