Making this grant presentation from last year public now (with some minor edits) in anticipation of our world premiere next month at Amazing Fantasy Fest! Details are here: https://www.amazingfantasyfest.com and new trailer is here: https://youtu.be/pRheZpXsBpQ For the video version of this podcast episode, go HERE: https://youtu.be/w3m6ZF-TOpM On 12.27.23 (my birthday) I did a livestream update on the film via Zoom (while I was still in the clutches of the 'Rona - 1/10 do not recommend). I showed a couple completed clips from the film, and even the first trailer! All this stuff will be exclusive and for your eyes only until probably Spring 2024 (at least), so you're definitely getting an advance look behind the curtain! EDITS: I trimmed off the beginning part of the stream where we were waiting for folks to join the Zoom, as well as the last 2/3 of the musical number so that it's still a surprise at the upcoming screenings! Left the first verse until the big guitars come in though. Also the clips aren't fully foley-ed or mixed, etc. and the score is all temp stuff. Basically...the movie is pretty much done now, this was when it was still a work in progress. INBETWEENING stars Brandon Cole, Tye Blue, Debbie Rochon, Chelsea McCurdy, Jill Brumer, Dillon DeWitt, Seán Patrick Judge, and Angelo Moore (the frontman/singer/saxophonist of Black Rock pioneers Fishbone). Eric Linson is a struggling multiracial filmmaker with a few credits to his name and absolutely nothing to show for it. Inbetweening follows his journey trying to remain afloat and healthy in the liminal space between projects...while the voices in his head steadily become louder. Some are helpful, but most aren't...especially the Zombie Guy. Fortunately, the lead singer of Eric's favorite band (Angelo Moore, from the legendary Fishbone, playing himself) is on Eric's side. Inbetweening melds live action, animation, puppets, and even a musical number to reveal Eric's increasingly fractured journey. This particular work is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

Yesterday, we were in rural Virginia interviewing the pioneering regenerative farmer, Joel Salatin. Today, we are on an equally innovative farm in Houston, Texas, in conversation with Kimberley Meyer, author of Accidental Sisters. It's called Shamba Ya Amani (Farm of Peace) and, as Meyer explains in her new book, it's a place where five immigrant women are attempting to build their own American dream. As Meyer notes, American invention comes in all shapes and forms and what these five immigrant women are doing at the urban farm of Shamba Ya Amani is just as innovative as anything one might find in Silicon Valley.Kimberly Meyer is the author of Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream (University of California Press, 2024) and The Book of Wanderings: A Mother-Daughter Pilgrimage (Little, Brown, 2015). Her work explores displacement, political and spiritual, and the ways that the relationships among women and between mothers and children can become a hopeful act of resistance against human suffering. She is a 2019 MacDowell Fellow and has received grants from the Houston Arts Alliance and writing residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. In addition to her work as a writer, she helped found and helps manage Shamba Ya Amani, the Farm of Peace, alongside a collective of refugee and immigrant women and other local Houstonians.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Artists can do many things with their work to combat injustice: begin or contribute to larger conversations affecting people; bring light to an issue not being addressed by society; conceptualize a solution to a problem in a new way; etc. But some issues are so vast and large that even addressing it presents its own series of issues. One could enter a conversation with generations of artists having already laid the groundwork, requiring research and participation before engagement. A good question for artists to ask themselves is: am I the right person to bring this issue up? We will have two guests discuss the work it takes to address political and/or social issues in their practice and what considerations artists should do before entering new conversations with their work. Shayna Schlosberg is the Director of Operations + Strategy at Women of Color in the Arts. In this episode, I speak John Abodeely, CEO of the Houston Arts Alliance. In our conversation, we discuss his career path, creating equity in the arts, and how he’s working to help the creative community of Houston cope with the pandemic. We discuss how he’s worked to improve arts education access in his past positions at Americans for the Arts, the Kennedy Center, and the President's Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and his current work as CEO of the Houston Arts Alliance. About John:John Abodeely is Chief Executive Officer of Houston Arts Alliance (HAA). Joining HAA in November of 2017, he brings a strong background in arts and arts education policy as the Acting Executive Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, service as Manager of National Partnerships for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Manager of Education at Americans for the Arts.As CEO of Houston Arts Alliance, John directs strategy in grantmaking, civic art development, and new programs. He is committed to developing the organization’s service to the arts community, in partnership with board, staff, grantees, investors, and other stakeholders. At the Presidents’ Committee, an advisory body to the White House on cultural issues, John was instrumental in the expansion of Turnaround Arts, a program that leverages the unique power of arts education to improve non-arts outcomes in a cohort of the nation's most struggling schools. During John’s tenure, the program successfully scaled from eight schools to sixty-eight. In April 2016, the Committee led sent the first federal cultural delegation to Cuba, immediately following the President's own historic trip. As the Trip Director for the delegation, Abodeely organized ten bilateral meetings with senior Cuban government officials and arranged for high-visibility U.S. artists to tour artist studios, explore schools, visit youth arts programs, and perform on stage with Cuban musicians. As a result of the delegation, embedded press and ongoing, bilateral artist and preservation exchanges helped to further the President’s goal of normalizing relations with Cuba.John has taught education policy at the graduate level, and served on boards and various review panels. Salim Nourallah is totally aware of the fact that the phrase “Texas music” carries with it a certain connotation, and he's been defying the stereotype since he figured out how to make a living as a musician. An award-winning producer, studio owner, record label co-founder and solo artist, Salim is a lot of things. At his core, though, he's a songwriter; just check out the volume of music he's released on Bandcamp. Aptly titled “Let's Be Miserable Together,” his latest EP was released in May of this year and we're sharing a catchy tune from it in this week's episode. Salim also tells me about Pleasantry Lane, a modern recording studio with a mid-century modern feel that you wouldn't know existed (and you wouldn't be able to find) unless someone told you. It's also the headquarters of the label Palo Santo Records, whose niche is discovering up-and-coming artists not necessarily from Texas. We talk about how his friendship with Dallas musician Rhett Miller developed, and he gives me the back story on a few songs on which he's worked with Rhett and the Old 97's. (Also, if you are a fan of the Old 97's, Salim has some scoop about their new album “Twelfth.”) Finally, the National Independent Venue Association needs our help, and the Houston Arts Alliance would love your participation at its Arts Town Hall. (NIVA recently endorsed the #SaveOurStages Act to offer relief to music venues affected by the pandemic. Read more about that here.) We cover a lot of ground in this week's episode with Fort Works Art's Lauren Childs—gallery owner, artist, mom, and constant supporter of the arts. Her gallery quickly became one of my favorite places in Fort Worth when it opened 2016, first for its unique roster of artists but eventually for its continued dedication to bringing international attention to Texas artists. In Episode 106, we talk about some of my favorite artists from previous Fort Works exhibitions (Dan Lam, Marshall Harris, Kate Simon), as well as a few of my favorite things: art activism, Art Basel, the Burning Man experience, and how we can help one another as we navigate these uncertain times. We also explore the collective nature of the Fort Worth arts scene, the state of art in 2020, and how she's remained busy organizing fundraising efforts for the city's creative community through her nonprofit foundation, Gallery of Dreams. (Head's up: the latest grant initiative for musicians is called Sounds of Resilience—details here.) Thanks for listening!
