With a B.A. in Political Science from NEIU and an M.A. in Women & Gender Studies from Loyola, she's currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education. Her commitment to eliminating racial, ethnic, and economic inequalities in education and beyond is deeply rooted in her Guatemalan background and experiences growing up in a single-mother home. John Escalante is the current Chief of Police of Northeastern Illinois University. He spent 30 years as a Chicago Police officer, where he climbed the ranks, eventually becoming First Deputy Superintendent and Interim Superintendent before retiring. Today I got to talk with Edwin Medina. Edwin sits on the Student Advisory Council at NEIU for the company GetSet. We also talked about his school experience and our shared experiences being students in our late 20s. Edwin is a Junior in Marketing and will get his master's degree in leadership. On this episode VibeQueen gets to know Artist Ahri Banks. They talk about meditation, how to practice self care and difficult conversations Ahri has had to face during these challenging times. Though her heritage is from the Caribbean, Ahri Banks (AB) born Ahriel Mullings in 1992, was raised on the northside of Chicago. Music has always been a part of Ahri’s life; from her family being full of singers, and being a part of the Chicago Children's Choir for 10 years, to finally attending college to study music. While studying at NEIU, Ahri graduated with a BA in Vocal Performance and a Minor in Dance. Over the years Ahri learned to take certain elements of music and the arts to create them into her own songwriting. While in her early 20s, Ahri added another layer of talent by being a freelance Chicago model for four years. “Even though I'm a solo artist, I've always been interested in modeling. When I was younger my mom always had me participate in local fashion shows and casting calls” - AB. Some of her accomplishments while modeling has been walking in Spring 2018 NYFW for Runwayz on Fire, and being featured as a Published Model, in SapphirEmerld Magazine Spring 2018 edition. “My biggest goal in life is to inspire all creative individuals to find their life balance (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) while being intertwined within music and the arts. Finding the balance in life can be hard but I truly believe through prayer, meditation, self-care/love, mindful thinking combined they can help you to be aligned with yourself and the universe. To find your life balance you have to first start with your inner self and work outwards. Clarinet virtuoso Jorge Montilla closed the Jewel Box season at NEIU on April 19, 2013 with a program of mostly Latin-American music. With pianist Kay Kim, Jorge played music for B-Flat clarinet on the first half of the program: works by Carlos Guastavino, Astor Piazzolla, and Arturo Marquez. After intermission, he switched to E-Flat clarinet – an instrument that is his specialty – and opened with the Second Sonata by Alfred Prinz (a work composed for him). The rest of the program held music by Guastavino, Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera, as well as a piece for solo E-Flat clarinet by Jorge Montilla himself.

Pianist Susan Tang’s recital was originally broadcast on January 18, 2013 from the Recital Hall at NEIU. Susan is a new faculty member in the Music Department, and earned her doctorate in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music. On this program: movement No. 3 “The Alcotts” from the Concord Sonata by Charles Ives; Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 10 in C Major, K. 330; Book 1 of Iberia by Álbeniz. Then after intermission, two Nocturnes by Chopin; and the complete Carnaval by Schumann.
