Does the price of an engagement ring define the depth of your love? For generations, diamonds have symbolised eternal commitment, with extravagant rings tied to greater devotion - an idea shaped by societal expectations and advertising. But does spending more truly mean loving more? At its heart, an engagement ring represents a promise, not a price tag. So, is it the cost of the ring that matters or the commitment it symbolises? On this week's episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly Katz takes us back to her summer road trip to Charleston, South Carolina, where she visited the charming new brick-and-mortar store of the *Goldbug Collection* on Spring Street.   Founded by sisters Mini Hay Avant and Kathleen Hay Hagood, Goldbug is a local jewelry line born out of Croghan's Jewel Box, their family's iconic jewelry store in Charleston.   As fourth-generation jewelers, these sisters have reimagined Southern charm with their unique costume jewelry, sending their bug-inspired creations all over the country.   In this episode continuing her #womensupportingwomen series, she stops in and sits down with the Goldbug Collection team member Riley Steinhour while Mini and Kathleen were away to learn all about the brand's inspiration, how it came to life, and why Goldbug is taking Charleston by storm.   Be sure to head over to our YouTube Channel to watch this fun in-store interview!   KEY TOPICS:   The Goldbug Story: From Family Tradition to Fashion Forward Mini and Kathleen, raised in a family of jewelers, began designing jewelry inspired by Charleston's low country beauty. From palm fronds to local bugs, the sisters turned their love for nature into a costume jewelry line that blends nostalgia and playfulness. #bugstobeautiful   Holly and Riley explore the roots of the brand, which started in Croghan's Jewel Box, a century-old jewelry store in Charleston, and how their family's engraving expertise has added a personalized touch to their pieces.   The Charm of Bug-Inspired Jewelry Holly and Riley dive into one of Goldbug's signature elements: jewelry inspired by Charleston's Palmetto Bug. While this Southern roach may not seem like a likely muse, Mini and Kathleen transformed it into an emblem of the region's character and charm. #what?!?!   The line also features okra-shaped pieces, peanuts, and fireflies, reflecting the beauty of everyday Southern life.    Riley shares how these quirky pieces resonate with customers, turning Charleston's pests into wearable art.   The Craft of Customization and Engraving A hallmark of Goldbug jewelry is its customization. With engraving passed down as a family trade, Goldbug offers bespoke pieces that customers can personalize with initials, dates, or symbols.   Riley showcases popular items like the “Forget Me Not” pendant and the baby puffy hearts, which make perfect gifts for loved ones.   Whether it's a charm that commemorates a special moment or an engraved token with sentimental meaning, Goldbug's pieces are a fusion of family history and modern design.   Mixing High and Low Jewelry Styles Holly discusses one of her favorite aspects of the Goldbug collection: its versatility in styling. Riley highlights how the costume jewelry can be easily paired with fine jewelry for an effortlessly chic look.   Holly shares tips on mixing real and costume jewelry to create a bold yet timeless style. Whether it's stacking bangles or layering necklaces, Goldbug pieces offer the perfect balance of playful design and classic elegance.   Why We Love the Goldbug Collection: She wraps up the episode by expressing her love for the *Goldbug Collection* and why she is passionate about supporting women-owned, small businesses. #YYAASSSS   Goldbug's combination of family heritage, creativity, and Charleston flair makes it a must-visit destination for any fashion lover. With pieces that tell a story and celebrate Southern charm, Goldbug is more than jewelry—it's a celebration of artistry and community.   Holly encourages her listeners to check out the store online, follow them on social media, and discover how they can add a little bug love to their own collections. We would have never believed it until we saw it, but only Goldbug can create beauty and style from everyday things can be easily overlooked.  We were so impressed by their collection we can't wait to see what they will think of next. Principals Chris and Clif Poston with Traton Homes join the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss the company's history, new construction opportunities and market conditions. The Poston Brothers sit down with show host Carol Morgan to discuss staying competitive in the homebuilding industry. In 1971, Traton Homes was founded by Clif and Chris Poston's father and uncle when the two were developing a community. After the initial hit of the oil embargo, the duo had to build their way out of a surplus of lots. Fifty-three years and 15,000 houses later, the family-owned building company is run by Clif and Chris alongside their father and uncle. Clif Poston said, “It's been a good ride for us…It's a good family business environment.” With such a rich company history, Clif remarked that balancing the traditions from 53 years of building with the demands of today can be a challenge. Sticking to their roots and taking a more conservative approach has resulted in over 50 years of success for the builder. Traton Homes began a new chapter a few years ago by opening its first active adult community. Following the tremendous success of the first community and several others, the builder is preparing to celebrate the opening of a few new 55+ communities! The company has also expanded its building region to the Florida Panhandle. Clif Poston said, “It's kind of a different market down there. It's been fun getting some [communities] done organically down there.” The company works hard to stay on top of today's hottest amenity and design trends to encourage prospective buyers to purchase in a Traton Homes community. Chris Poston also shared that the company entered the build-to-rent sector as a seller and a fee builder and met great success! Traton Homes will construct 1,300 homes across build-to-rent and for sale with the new company venture this year. A detached Jewel Box community, Avenbrook recently celebrated its first closings at the end of 2023. Other exciting new additions to the Traton Homes portfolio include Courtyards at Traditions in Cumming, Bluffs at Bells Ferry in Marietta, Townes at South Main and the second phase of East Park Village in Kennesaw,  Riverwalk Place in Gwinnett, Winsome Park in Woodstock, Westpark Place and Old Mill Preserve in Powder Springs and Wilkins Walk in Mableton. In the Florida market, the brothers shared that they found a shortage of homes, and in their Florida division, they hope to fill the gap in the market. The builder is currently working on opportunities in Dade and Walton Counties, with announcements coming soon. Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about Traton Homes or visit www.TratonHomes.com. On this day in legal history, Richard M. Nixon resigned the office of the presidency, effective at noon. We covered that in yesterday's episode, so we won't go in to detail here. Instead, let's talk about Charles Manson. On this day in legal history, the Manson Family murdered actress Sharon Tate and four others in Los Angeles, California. The Manson Family murders not only shocked the nation but also presented an unprecedented challenge to the legal system. The subsequent trial was one of the longest and most widely publicized in American history, highlighting the difficulties in prosecuting criminal enterprises with deep psychological manipulation and control over its members. The complex nature of the crime, involving a charismatic leader and followers willing to commit murder on his command, pushed the boundaries of legal procedures and criminal responsibility. Moreover, the trial raised serious questions about the role of the media in shaping public opinion and potentially influencing the outcome of a case. Legal experts and scholars took a keen interest in the legal strategies employed, which included an attempt to prove that Manson's control over his followers was so complete that they were not responsible for their actions. The verdict, which saw Manson and several of his followers convicted, set a precedent in dealing with similar cult-like criminal organizations. Overall, the legal proceedings following the Manson murders contributed significantly to the development of legal theories and practices related to cult behavior, group responsibility, and the intersection of law, psychology, and media influence.Three in-house lawyers for Southwest Airlines were ordered to undergo religious freedom training from the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) after a federal judge, Judge Brantley Starr, sanctioned them for inappropriate wording in a company notice on employee rights. The ruling came after former Southwest employee Charlene Carter won a religious discrimination case after being fired for anti-abortion social media posts. Judge Starr criticized Southwest's compliance with the court's order and mandated a “verbatim” statement reflecting the court's preferred language. The judge also expressed concerns over Southwest's "chronic failure" to understand federal religious freedom protections and considered the training the “least restrictive means” to ensure compliance. Southwest plans to appeal both the order and the underlying judgment. Meanwhile, the ADF, a Christian legal nonprofit, disputes the Southern Poverty Law Center's characterization of it as a hate group for its anti-LGBTQ views. The case has drawn attention to the balance between company policies and federal laws, especially Title VII, that protect religious freedoms. While Southwest argued it had the right to speak to its workers and maintain its civility policies, the judge's decision reflects the precedence of federal laws over internal company guidelines. Mark Mix, president of the National Right to Work Foundation, expressed hope that the order might encourage workers to express religious dissent against company and union political agendas.Southwest Lawyers Must Take ADF Religion Classes, Judge Says (1)The American Bar Association (ABA) has called on U.S. judicial leaders to investigate the mental health effects of violent or traumatic incidents on judges, their staff, and families, and recommend measures to enhance their safety. The request comes in the wake of increased threats and violence, such as an assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the 2020 murder of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas's son. The ABA's House of Delegates supported a resolution at its annual meeting, focusing on the mental health impacts of high caseloads and violence, and encouraging the development of training and professional, confidential treatment for judges and their families. The resolution's report emphasized that existing legislation, such as the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act, does not adequately address the whole threat spectrum or all victims. It stressed the need for attention to the broader community affected by traumatic events, including the often "forgotten" staff and families. The report also highlighted that trauma can stem not only from violent threats but also from experiences within court proceedings, such as complex sentencings, divorces, and abuse cases. It called for training on topics such as secondary trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and overall mental and emotional well-being.ABA calls for mental health study of judiciary amid rising threats | ReutersGoogle has requested a U.S. appeals court to pause a decision that would return an antitrust lawsuit, filed by Texas, back to federal court in Texas. The lawsuit, initially filed in 2020, accuses Google of abusing its dominance in advertising technology. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation initially granted the state's request to send the lawsuit back to Texas, but stayed the decision to give Google time to appeal. Google has disputed the move, arguing that a law granting state attorneys general the right to choose where an antitrust lawsuit will be litigated is not retroactive. This is the case that gave rise to discussions of Google's ad business potentially needing to be split, Bell Telephone-style. Google makes emergency request to block Texas antitrust lawsuit move | ReutersThe wealthy are increasingly using private foundations to create "jewel-box museums," garnering massive tax deductions while retaining control and enjoyment of valuable assets. These foundations, which are just basically 501(c)(3) organizations, are becoming tools of tax avoidance for affluent individuals, especially when they use them to house art or historic properties. The scheme typically involves donating an ostentatious mansion or valuable property to a private foundation, thereby theoretically entitling the donor to a plethora of income tax deductions. However, enforcement is lax, and there are not enough resources to ensure that these "museums" provide genuine public benefits or admit the public regularly. The reduction in IRS funding has hindered the agency's ability to police these quasi-museum schemes. Consequently, there is a need for tighter rules, more specific policies, and more transparent reporting to close existing loopholes. My proposed solutions include requiring explicit reporting of public access details, implementing random audits for compliance, and incentivizing whistleblowers. At the heart of the solution is a requirement for increased IRS funding and the political will to enforce regulations more stringently. Without addressing these loopholes, efforts to increase tax compliance by the wealthy or raise tax rates on top earners will continue to be undermined, perpetuating a system that disproportionately benefits the affluent.‘Jewel-Box' Museums Are the Wealthy's Latest Tax Dodge Scheme Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

This week, BKP picks up where we left off in our stadium shows to bring the history of the 10th oldest MLB ballpark, Orioles Park at Camden Yards. In order to save baseball from itself, Orioles President Larry Luchino, was convinced that the only way baseball was going to save itself, going into the 1990's, was by taking the game back to early 1900's, when baseball teams built majestic Jewel Box cathedrals, instead of multi-purpose monstrosities and artificial turf cookie cutters. Luchino was intent on making a ballpark that held all the modern technological advances, with a heavy dose of throwback idiosyncrisies and quirky playing surface. And with that vision in mind, Orioles Park at Camden Yards was given birth and would change not only the way baseball fans would forever consume baseball live, but set the standard for every single ballpark made after her. Not only would the Yard set trends, but she sits on hallowed ground, as Babe Ruth's father once owned a bar where Center Field now stands. His father would also be murdered in Center Field. The only thing that rivals her charm and magnificence, is the story of the ground she sits on. #BaltimoreOrioles #LarryLucchino #EdwardBennettWilliams #CalRipken #EddieMurray #OriolesParkAtCamdenYards #MemorialStadium

Forest Park is a treasure for all to enjoy, and is recognized nationwide as one of America's great parks. Just press play to hear the whole story. ------ Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Jody Sowell, Forest Park, Parks, Landmarks,------   Podcast Transcript: I'm Jody Sowell, Managing Director of Public History  at the Missouri Historical Society, and Here's History, on eighty eight one, KDHX. ------ Forest Park has been called “one of America's great public spaces” and consistently ranks among the country's best parks. But without some of the bleakest moments in American history, the park might not be what it is today. ------ When the park was established in 1876, the main concern was how to get St. Louisans all the way out to the 1,300 acre piece of land. A train ride from downtown would take 20 minutes and streetcar lines had yet to stretch so far. ------ But that problem would pale in comparison to what would soon face the country. ------ In 1893, the United States was in the beginning of a depression, and unemployment skyrocketed. National unemployment reached 20 percent and in some states it topped 40 percent. In St. Louis, we turned to Forest Park. ------ The St. Louis Post-Dispatch started a campaign to fund a new lake in the park. The lake would offer boating to the public, but, more important at the time, its creation would require the employment of thousands of men. ------- When the country faced an even more serious depression following the stock market crash in 1929, it again turned to Forest Park. The Works Progress Administration was established in 1935 to create jobs through public works projects across the country. Some of those projects helped to transform Forest Park. WPA workers cleared paths, built picnic areas, and improved the park's lakes. Two of their biggest projects were the creation of an art deco greenhouse called the Jewel Box and a new waterfall west of the Grand Basin. ------ The Jewel Box and that waterfall can, of course, still be seen today, and the next time you go to Forest Park you will likely see people boating on or walking around Post-Dispatch Lake. ------ For many St. Louisans the park serves as a playground or a place to expand their knowledge at one of its museums, or simply a place for a moment of peace. ------ But Forest Park also serves as a reminder that sometimes our best and most enduring ideas are borne out of our toughest challenges. ------ Here's History is a joint production of KDHX and the Missouri Historical Society. I'm Jody Sowell, and this is eighty eight one, KDHX, Saint Louis.

What an incredible artist with such a powerful voice and an array of musical talents. Jacqine has gained notoriety as a prolific singer/songwriter/keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/and arranger in a wide array of genres. With a distinct voice and influences that extend the gamut from Alison Moyet, Annie Lenox, Maysa, Lalah Hathaway, Lara Fabian, Phoebe Snow, to many other vocalists, she has built quite a music following. Talented on keyboards, she has a keen sense of choosing instrumental sounds that reflect an unequivocal unique combination of chord patterns for each song she creates. Her journey into music at a very young age began with her dad who introduced her to 1950's and 1960's records of Mama Cass and Edie Gorme as well as Debbie Boone, Barbra Streisand, and other artists and popular movies. She listened to Miichael Jackson, Tavares, Cerrone, Chic, and a number of 1970's classic groups. Some of Jacqine's favorite music includes: Earth, Wind, and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Incognito, Ambrosia , Elton John, the Eagles, Shalimar, Shakatak, Phil Collins, Kansas, and Chicago. She creates complex harmonies, chord progressions, melodies and lyrics and creates and emulates other instruments on keyboards such as saxophone, guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, strings, bass, brass which has led to demo recordings and live performances, She studied voice privately with Iris Marrus with Susan Windor (Jazz teacher at Mannace School of Music)as well as Jazz Improvisation in a group and where she learned traditional Jazz and very complex chord progressions with the creation of jazz melodies and chord progressions in anticipation of song development. She studied and sang pop music as well with a Pop and Jazz vocalist. Her introduction to Smooth Jazz began while listening to CD101.9 and hearing Peter White's track Caravan of Dreams on the radio in addition to Pat Metheny's music. She bought CD's and a number of albums of various Smooth Jazz artists latest releases such as David Benoit, Tom Scott, David Sanborn, and Jonathan Butler. Jacqine became an avid listener and huge fan of the music, attending shows of Stanley Jordan, Richard Elliot, Brian Culbertson, and listening to additional Smooth Jazz radio stations as well. In a chance meeting, she was introduced to the dance genre after a producer heard her sing and she got her first production nonexclusive deal with a producer which led to doing more records non-exclusively with several producers, one of whom she was asked to co-write. She found success with a song she co-wrote that was licensed at the Cannes Film Festival in France in 13 countries and had the opportunity to work with Eric Kupper, remixer for Whitney Houston, Cher, Shakira, Alicia Keyes, Lenny Kravitz, Yoko, Ono, Donna Summer, Curtis Mayfield, and other artists. She has graced audiences with her vocals while performing at several venues in New York City including The Jazz Center of New York, Nells, Jewel Box, and Café Gianluca. She has gained attention from the TV industry and some of the music is fit for the film score genre as well. Currently, with tons of radio play and music radio interviews, she has fans locally and abroad with music heard in over 40 countries and 35,000 listeners. Most recently, on a couple of songs,Jacqine recorded with Curtis McCain, Naomi Andriaanz, Donald Waugh, Scott Marvill, Matthias Beckmann, and Craig Levy of Little Pioneer Cider House. Craig did the drums on Jacqine's song and Jacqine added extra drums on a couple of those songs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message

Episode CreditsHosts: Rob Bates and Victoria GomelskyEditor: Olivia BrileyProducer and engineer: Katey Clifford and Kathy PasseroPlugs: jckonline.com, @jckmagazine Show Recap Rhett Outten, Co-Owner of Chrogan’s Jewel BoxVictoria and Rob introduce their guest Rhett Outten, co-owner of Croghan’s Jewel Box in Charleston, South Carolina. Their family jewelry business has been around since 1903. The building was bought in the 1970s and is well over 100 years old. Rhett tells the story of her company spanning three generations of her family—starting with her grandfather, who has a hand engraver and bench jeweler, followed by her mother who brought out the retail aspects. Rhett manages the social media and online presence while her sister manages the more corporate side of things. The Impact of Store Closings While Rhett expected her store to be closed at least two weeks, she’s now going on over six. Rhett describes the ominous feeling she had at the beginning of the crisis when everything was beginning to shut down. What has helped keep the payroll going of their 27 employees was Rhett’s spearheading the social media side of things with a great online presence. You’ll hear Rhett talk about her sister’s idea for a “social distancing deal of the day.” Running a Store During COVIDRob asks Rhett about the difficulties she’s faced in running her store during this time. Rhett explains how she has created “zones” in her store—where only one person works in a zone at a time in order to practice social distancing in accordance with the recommendations in her city. They have a very small staff at any point in-store, have drive-by pickups for purchased jewelry, and have one-on-one private appointments to keep their store as clear of people as possible. A Happily Ever AfterYou’ll hear Rhett tell a touching story of a groom who came in looking for a custom ring to be made with family stones, on a timeline of six weeks. It wasn’t long before this groom just couldn’t wait to marry the love of his life anymore—so he asked Rhett if he could just get a diamond wedding band instead to marry his sweetheart as soon as possible—with a special engraving on the band. The Business Side of ThingsRob asks about PPP, loans, and small business emergency loans. Rhett has never had to apply for one before—but she was thankfully approved when she did during this time. Victoria asks about the chat function that Rhett has recently implemented on their website to keep in track with customers. It’s done through Podium’s platform and helps Rhett and her team to keep in touch with customers while everything is shut down. Sometimes human contact really is everything. Protocol While in the StoreThere are certain measures you can take to make sure your employees are staying safe during COVID-19. They vary by location, but some things Rhett is doing are making sure everyone uses face masks, wiping down everything with antiseptic wipes, and diligent hand sanitizer usage combined with frequent and hand washing. They also have one door to enter, and another to exit, as well as tape markers on the floor to maintain distance. Victoria asks if Rhett will be doing anything differently after this crisis is over—and Rhett says she’ll keep up her online presence.

This week on Fresh Hop Cinema, we cover what might just be our favorite movie of the year in Greta Gerwig’s “Ladybird.” The film follows Christine “Ladybird” McPherson as she pushes through her senior year at her Catholic high school in Sacramento, CA. Finding your way into adulthood is never an easy task and “Ladybird” explores what can happen when this already nuanced time of self-discovery in one’s life gets complicated, and often strained, by tensions at home, the fluidity of friendships, an ever-changing romantic landscape and the pressure of “what happens next.” We drink a slew of beers including:

1- “Jewel Box,” a NE IPA from Revision Brewing in Sparks, NV which exceeds our expectations. 2- “Two Hearted Ale” from Bells Brewery out of Comstock, MI. With a history of accolades (including recently having beaten Pliny the Elder in a national taste test), our hopes for this beer were high. Sadly, we weren’t sure this ale was up to par.

3- Our friend and patron of the show John Wollam drops in for a surprise beer review. Stay tuned!

Please consider leaving us a rating or review on iTunes or wherever you listen to podcasts. It helps other people find the show and, come on, it’s almost Christmas.

Bliss and Drumming: The Slow Enlightenment of the Hard Rock Drummer

From the blog www.blissanddrumming.com, narrated by Clementine. She also refers to www.awakeningthetrueself.com for lessons in meditation and energy work. *** The next day, I woke and sure enough, it was the first thing that met me. I have been here before. The heavy feeling that makes me want to just never get out of bed. The grand excuses of why it happened and the conversations in my head with anyone who would tell me what they really thought of my playing that night. The flights of fantasy of what it would be like to just give up playing, give up the band, move to Minneapolis and become, I don’t know, some other person who has nothing to do with drums ever again. I indulged all that for a little while, but I noticed that things have changed. The embarrassment was not so crippling, the negative tirades, not so sustaining. I felt drawn to go to work. I sat in meditation and invited the heavy feeling in to fully experience it. It didn’t stay long. I dropped through it, into the still, open plain where all ability exists. I realized what I wanted to do was to get to the studio and start smoothing out those troublesome patterns. I wanted to get to the drums. That desire split apart the feelings of unworthiness. I fell down again, and once again, I’m going to get back up. The drums forgive it all, once I get back to them and give them the respect and attention they require.

In this podcast, we learn about an upcoming musical called "The Crossing", which will be on stage at the Jewel Box Theater in Poulsbo from March 17th through April 9th. Recently-honored playwright Paul Lewis and leading actor Walt Brown share with us their experience of putting together a musical set in the 1930s, as Amelia Earhart prepared for her dangerous trans-Atlantic solo flight attempt. However, unlike most stories of Amelia, this one is told from the perspective of Ray Spencer, an aviation meteorologist haunted by a past tragedy, who is on the threshold of an elusive scientific breakthrough which he hopes will make long-distance flight safer. The focus is not only on Amelia in flight, but also on her support team on the ground, including husband George Putnam, her mechanic, and this meteorologist. It's an interesting backstory of Amelia's crossing of the Atlantic through the eyes of a reporter that documented the event. As Paul and Walt explain to BCB host Christina Hulet, the musical speaks to what it means to be human, and how to grapple with our own doubts, fears and pain as we try to accomplish the extraordinary. The Crossing was co-authored by Paul Lewis and Carissa Meisner Smit, with music by Paul Lewis. Paul is one of two winners of this year's "Island Treasure" award for distinguished contributions to our community's arts and humanities, which was presented at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in February 2017. Tickets for "The Crossing" are available through the Jewel Box Theater's website for evening performances from March 17 through April 8 at 7:30pm, plus Sunday matinees at 2:00pm on March 19, March 26, April 2 and April 9. Also, on Saturday April 1st, Paul Lewis will stay after the show to talk with the audience and answer questions they may have about the play. The Jewel Box, with about 100 seats, provides an intimate community theater experience, and it won the Kitsap Sun's 2009 award as Best Theater of the West Sound. With pianist Kay Kim, Jorge played music for B-Flat clarinet on the first half of the program: works by Carlos Guastavino, Astor Piazzolla, and Arturo Marquez. After intermission, he switched to E-Flat clarinet – an instrument that is his specialty – and opened with the Second Sonata by Alfred Prinz (a work composed for him). The rest of the program held music by Guastavino, Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera, as well as a piece for solo E-Flat clarinet by Jorge Montilla himself.

The History of the Christian Church

This is the 11th episode in the story of Rabban Sauma, and we're closing in on the conclusion. After a month-long tour of the holy sites in and around Paris, Sauma had a final audience with King Philip. He meant it to be the crowning achievement in the royal treatment he'd lavished on the Chinese ambassador. It was held in the upper chapel of Saint-Chapelle where the just completed stained glass windows filled the room with light, giving the room its nick-name – The Jewel Box. Being newly installed, the colors were vibrant. The windows tell a Biblical history of the world. The room also holds statues of the 12 Apostles and vivid paintings that all combine to literally dazzle the eye. But it was the relics the room held that would have most impressed the Rabban. Philip carefully opened an ornate box holding, what was reputed to be, Jesus' crown of thorns. Another reliquary held a piece of wood from the cross. While several of Paris' relics were indeed brought back from the Holy Land after the first Crusade, these two had been secured by Philip's grandfather St. Louis in Constantinople 40 yrs before. Saint-Chapelle was built as simply a large reliquary to hold their reliquaries.Sauma's account of viewing these precious relics reports the King told him they'd been secured during the First Crusade IN Jerusalem. Either Sauma misunderstood, or Philip intentionally misled him. Philip wanted to encourage the Rabban in his appeal for a new Crusade. It's likely Philip fudged the facts so as to give Sauma the impression the French greatly honored the idea of a campaign to retake the Holy Land, even though he had no intention of making an imminent call for one. His behavior throughout the Rabban's visit suggests he wanted to curry the favor of the Mongol Ilkhans. Furthering that impression was the envoy and letter he sent with Sauma when he eventually returned to Persia. Before leaving Paris. Philip loaded him with lavish gifts, which the pious and humble monk lumps under the heading, “lavish gifts” in his account. So, armed by the assumption he'd secured the French King's commitment to a Crusade in alliance with the Mongols in Persia against the Muslim Mamluks, Sauma headed west to see if he could recruit the English King Edward I. It was fortunate that Edward just so happened to be near at hand, visiting his lands in Gascony, a region on the west coast of France just north of Spain. After a 3 week journey, Sauma arrived in Bordeaux in the Fall of 1287.Whereas the Parisians had plenty warning of the arrival of the Far Eastern Ambassador from the exotic Mongols and went all out in their celebration of greeting, the people of Bordeaux were surprised. “Who are you and why are you here,” they asked? When word was brought to King Edward, he sought to make amends for the poor way such an august figure had been greeted. Sauma smoothed over the rough start to his embassy among the English by giving Edward the gifts Ilkhan Arghun sent and letters of greeting from he and the Nestorian Catholicus Mar Yaballaha. Edward received them with marked appreciation, but it was when Rabban Sauma proposed an alliance with the Mongols against the Mamluks that he became most animated. “A new Crusade to liberate Jerusalem and bring aid to the beleaguered Outremer? Why that sounds stellar!” was his enthusiastic reaction. Only 6 months earlier, he'd vowed to take the cross. This seemed a glow of divine favor on his pledge, an affirmation of God's delight in him. While Edward intended to immediately embark on the adventure, events back home conspired to stall that plan. Wales rebelled, again; and entanglements on the Continent in the fractious politics and schemes of Europe hijacked his resources and attention. But all of that was yet future; near future to be sure, but not yet. As far as Sauma was concerned, he had the support of both the Kings of England and France in the proposed alliance with the Mongol Ilkhans in Persia in their long desire to rout the Mamluks from the Middle East.Furthering Sauma's sense of favor by the English King was the invitation to officiate Communion for the royal court. Though Sauma consecrated and served the elements according to the ancient Syriac formula, it was enough akin to the Mass that the participants were easily able to follow along, understanding not the words, but the meaning behind each movement of the ritual. And THAT – is simply remarkable!! Think of it. Though it's the close of the 13th C, and these two branches of The Church have been sundered from each other for 800 yrs, when adherents from the two groups engage in the focal point of their religious service, though they can't understand one another's speech, they DO understand what's happening, because the rite itself hasn't fundamentally changed. That's stunning, by anyone's reckoning.Once the service was finished, Edward threw a feast. It was his way to finalize and seal the agreement between England and Persia. Sauma didn't record what this royal feast served, but we have accounts of some of Edwards' other such feast. Let me just pass along the idea that you can go right ahead and picture the most raucous dining hall scene from any medieval movie with the ox spinning on a spit over a huge fire, chicken bones being thrown across the room in mass quantities, platers laden high with all kinds of bread and vegetables. And keg after keg of drink. Edward was known for these kinds of food & beverage extravaganzas. And once again, having achieved his official duties as Arghun's ambassador, Sauma turned to his personal mission; visiting the holy sites of Edwards' domains on the Continent. Edward not only provided guides, he paid all Sauma's expenses for this pilgrimage. When he returned, Edward did something curious. He took pains to make sure Sauma understood that European Christians believed in Christ alone. It seems someone may have gotten to the King and informed him of the ancient rift between the Nestorian and Western Church. For his part, Sauma wasn't going to throw over the much-needed alliance between East and West over nuances of theological wording that people who 800 years earlier had divided over – and THEY spoke the same language. A lengthy dissertation on the nature of the Trinity through translators just wasn't practical. So Sauma let it go.Late in 1287, with two-thirds of his mission accomplished, The Rabban decided it was time to head back to Rome and see if a new Pope had been selected. Two of Europe's most powerful armies were now committed to the cause. All they needed was permission from Rome's Bishop. By the end of the year, the obstinate cardinals still had not made a selection.Fleeing the cold of the French winter, he traveled to Genoa to await the election of the New Pope. Sauma's report of Genoa makes it clear it was maybe his favorite place in all his travels. The city was a beauty, the people warm and friendly. As much as he loved Genoa, Sauma's sense of responsibility began needling him. He wasn't, as they say, getting any younger. The trip back to Persia with his report to Arghun was going to be another major epic in a life FILLED with them. If the last months' long journey from Persia to the West had aged him years, the return trip would age the now sexagenarian a decade. He couldn't return to Persia by hopping aboard a 747. It meant another rickety ship across some of the most dangerous waters of the Med, to Constantinople, then across the Black Sea with its plethora of pirates, to the western end of the Silk Roads, then across Mesopotamia to Persia. [And we complain when we need to hop in the car and drive to the market down the street!]It's not difficult sympathizing with Sauma's rising guilt at enjoying Genoa when he knew how eager both his friend Mar Yaballaha and his ruler, Ilkhan Arghun was for his return and report. Sauma was a man with a profound sense of duty. What else could account for the multitude of manifest difficulties he'd endured over the previous decade? But Genoa had everything he'd been looking for in his pilgrimage. Duty won out over ease and Sauma began to chaff as he waited for the Cardinals in Rome to get it together. They finally did. In February 1288 they elected Jerome of Ascoli as Pope Nicholas IV. It was an auspicious choice for Sauma's mission. Some years before, Jerome had been Rome's ambassador to Constantinople to see about effecting a reconciliation between East & West. The effort proved unfruitful, but it made Jerome more aware of the needs and sensitives of the Eastern Church. If any Europeans can be said to be aware of the threat the Mamluks presented the Faith, Pope Nicholas IV was among them.It helped Sauma's cause that Nicholas was one of the people he'd spent considerable time conversing with when he'd before been in Rome. The two had hit it off, despite the language barrier.Nicholas sent an envoy to Genoa requesting Sauma's return to the Eternal City. Two weeks later, as Sauma's party reached Rome's outskirts, they were met by a delegation of church officials welcoming him to the City.Ushered into Nicholas' presence, Sauma showed him the highest form of obeisance he could by bowing on hands and knees, kissing the Pope's hands and feet, then rising to walk backward with arms crossed at the wrists before his chest; a Nestorian sign of the utmost honor. Sauma then delivered the last of his official letters and gifts from Arghun and Mar Yaballaha.Nicholas showed his ready acceptance of Sauma's embassy and person by requesting he stay and celebrate Easter with his Western brethren. Nicholas knew that Sauma, as a Nestorian Rabban, would feel the need to officiate at the events of Holy Week in some church setting. So rather than travel, we suggested he stay and plan on doing so there in Rome. Plush lodgings were secured for him and his attendants.Sauma then began preparations for Easter celebrations. He requested permission to conduct Mass so as to show Western Christians how it was done in the Nestorian tradition. The pope not only granted him permission, he showed great curiosity to witness the ritual. When the time came, a huge crowd was on hand. When all was said and done, the consensus was the same as in Bordeaux. While the language was different, the ritual was so similar as to make the differences inconsequential. So interesting was Sauma's conduct at the Mass, the Pope invited him to officiate at more services over the next few weeks. The Rabban asked in return of the Pope would favor him by serving him the Eucharist, which Nicholas heartily assented to. The day was Palm Sunday of 1288.Sauma reports that the crowds attending service that day were beyond anything his imagination could have conjured. People literally filled the streets, carrying branches of palms and olives. On Maunday Thursday of the next week, so many people packed the church where the Pope held Mass that when they said a united “Amen” the walls shook. The service over, the Pope then made the rounds of several locations in Rome where he bestowed blessing and favor on various people and artifacts. He ended by bringing his entire household staff together and washing their feet. Sauma was hugely impressed with this act of papal humility, describing it in depth. The day ended with a huge feast for some 2000.Good Friday began with a procession from the Church of the Holy Cross, where the Pope held aloft a piece of the Cross as massive crowds once again attended the scene. The rest of the day was spent in quiet meditation on the sacrifice of Christ.Saturday saw the Pope making the rounds to bestow more blessing on individual shrines and folk. Then Easter Sunday services were conducted in the ancient Church of Saint Maria Maggiore.Sauma knew his fellow Nestorians were curious about the practices of their Western Cousins, so he paid close attention to all that was happening around him., recording the events in as intimate detail as he could.Easter being complete and his mission now finished, Sauma asked permission to return home. Nicholas asked him to stay. Sauma struck for compromise He was more than pleased to stay, especially since it came from a sincere request on the part of the Pope with whom he was getting along well. BUT, a higher purpose was to be served in his return to Persia where he could share with the Mongol ruler the favorable reception he'd been shown across Europe. Certainly, that had to be a good harbinger of a future alliance. When word got out about the success of Sauma's mission, lingering tensions between East & West would subside. Such was the nature of medieval diplomacy. Then Sauma made a request that threatened to blow everything up.Picture that scene in a movie where two parties who are potential enemies, are in fact getting along and everyone's on pins and needles hoping for a new day of peace. Then there's a pause, and one of them says something that threatens to ruin it all. But the representative of the other aide at first just stares at them with a look of, well. That's the problem; no one knows what to think. And everyone starts moving their hand slowly toward their gun because they think, “Oh no. This is it. Get ready to start shooting.” But then the guy breaks out in a huge smile and starts laughing. The tension is immediately released. That's the scene when Sauma asked the Pope, for …  Ready? è Some sacred relics. At first, Nicholas was stunned at the boldness of Sauma's request. Nay; it was more than bold; it was brazen. He told the Rabban that if he were in the habit of giving relics to every foreign emissary who came to see him, there'd soon be nothing left in Rome to give.Still, in light of Sauma's perilous and long journey, he was pleased to give Sauma some treasures to take home. He gave him some scraps of cloth from clothes that were said to have belonged to Jesus and Mary, as well as various relics of different saints and special vestments for Mar Yaballaha. Maybe the most significant gift Nicholas bestowed was a letter patent authorizing Mar Yaballaha and his Nestorian Catholicus successors as the authority over the Church of the East. He gave Rabban Sauma a letter patent naming him Visitor General for all churches of the East, not just China, as the previous Nestorian Patriarch had done.Implied in Nicholas' issuing of these letter-patents was that HE, as the Roman Pope, had jurisdiction over the East. Sauma might like to have contested that. But what point? It's not like he was going to get Nicholas to back down. For goodness sake, the question of prime ecclesiastical authority had been going on for hundreds of years. Sauma was under no illusion he was going to set things right now. Rather, all he could do was blow up the alliance that seemed to be a done deal. After giving Sauma a large gift of gold to help pay his expenses, Sauma began preparations to return home.Nicholas gave Sauma a letter for Arghun, thanking the Mongol ruler for his beneficent rule of the Christians of his realm and thanking him for his offer of an alliance against the Mamluks. A copy resides in the Vatican museum. Then Nicholas launched into an appeal for both Mongols and Nestorians to submit to papal authority. He urged Arghun to convert to Christianity post haste and be baptized under the authority of Rome. Then he indicated while Sauma had indeed faithfully transmitted the Ilkhan's desire for an alliance, he and he alone could call a Crusade. The secular rulers of Europe might be gung-ho but they had no authority to approve a Crusade. Only he, as the head of the Church, possessed that right. AND, knowing the mindset of the rest of Europe, besides the monarchs of England and France, a Crusade wasn't in the cards at that time. So he adroitly side-stepped making a commitment, while at the same time, encouraging the Mongols to do their best against the common enemy.Arghun had indicated a willingness in his letter to the Pope to convert and be baptized IF that baptism could be done in a reclaimed Jerusalem, one free of the Mamluk scourge. Nicholas said Arghun had it backward. He ought to convert and be baptized NOW. That would assure him of heaven's favor in any campaign he undertook. His example would surely lead to mass conversions, furthering the promise of divine favor. So the Pope didn't out-right turn down an alliance not forbid a Crusade. He just shifted the emphasis of his letter onto the need for Arghun to trust God and surrender to him, which of course would be done by accepting the Roman Church's hegemony over his realm.Nicholas wasn't done with his letter writing. He penned one to Mar Yaballaha as well. This one began by praising the Nestorian Catholicus for his wise leadership of a challenged Church. But then it went into a long lecture on “proper” Christian doctrine, something the Nestorian Patriarch wasn't at all likely to look kindly on. The last paragraph was a blatant and tactless statement of the supremacy of the Roman church.Since these letters were open, Sauma read them both. He was deeply disappointed at the tone they took with the two men he reported to. Their condescending tone was sure to dishearten and alienate their recipients. The Pope refusal to sanction a Crusade or give any support to the proposed alliance seemed to make his entire trip West pointless. No doubt disappointed, Sauma managed to tamp down any expression of it in his concluding meeting with the Pope. He was probably just glad to be quitting the West & the prospect of going home. We'll wrap up Bar Sauma's magnificent tale in our next episode.
