A four-person panel has determined that the current New Zealand Rugby Union constitution and consequent governance structures aren't 'fit for purpose'. The review urges NZ Rugby to create a stakeholder council and an appropriately skilled board in order to address issues with fan engagement and revenue. Panel chair David Pilkington says the current process of appointing board members is 'convoluted' and needs to be simplified. "What we're advocating is a professional appointments process that simplifies the opportunity to put directors onto the board, directors that have the skills, knowledges and experience to deal with challenges." At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big-ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all.   The New Zealand Rugby Union: 4/10 By all means, hire who you want, when you want - but try to look like you know what the hell you are doing in the process. After all, you are only the national game.   Andrew Coster: 3/10 Yet again he looks hopelessly out of touch. The apology came way too late and I'm not sure a caravan solves it.   Stuart Nash: 2/10 Because he's in charge of police and a local who dismissed other locals. And he's in charge of forestry and has pissed off the East Coasters as well.   Chris Hipkins: 3/10 Because he is supposed to be in charge of the other two fools and has seen his leadership honeymoon come to a grinding halt this week, with a tin ear and a massive amount of condescension. Hence, leading to yet more apologies.   The Warriors: 7/10 Tonight's the night full of hope and expectation. This. Is. Our. Year.   Rob Campbell: 5/10 He was foolish to ever think he could get away with what he said. But, as a supporter of free speech he was defending his corner and I kind of get that.   Grapes: 7/10 The harvest is underway, as is the kiwifruit, which reminds us that yes some have got whacked but a lot haven't. And may the sun shine during picking and may the returns be profitable.   Doctors: 6/10 Because the idea to train more is a good and obvious one. So why then has the Government not even replied?   King Charles: 8/10 For booting his reprobate son and his narcissistic Mrs out of Frogmore Cottage.   LISTEN ABOVE FOR MIKE HOSKING'S FULL WEEK IN REVIEWSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The longer this Ian Foster stuff drags on, the more obvious or like it's becoming that the New Zealand Rugby Union aren't going to fire Fozzie.Of course, they should fire Fozzie, he should never have been appointed.I'm not saying this with malice, you'll recall just last month I was arguing that the man deserved a chance, but he's had his chance and the stats are horrible.First coach to lose to Ireland, first coach to lose to Argentina, first coach to lose a home series in nearly 30 years. But then even if they wanted to get rid of him they're running out of time now. They haven't got time to fire him and replace him before the Rugby Championship starts in two weeks. They need to be in South Africa in two weeks' time for the first game, they were supposed to announce their squad for the trip today, that's not enough time to get a new coach. They won't want to fire him half way through the Rugby Championship, because that's a sure fire way to destabilise a squad and lose. So, they can do it after the Rugby Championship ends on 24 September, which means they have about 11 months before the World Cup.NZR really should have pulled the pin on Fozzie last year before the Northern Tour, when the commentators could see what was happening and were calling for it.What did they do instead? They signed him for two more years to give him certainty. It feels like NZR's strategy is just to hold tight and hope things turn around, but things aren't turning around and the longer they do this, the less time they'll have if and when they finally pull the pin.And they'll have to pull the pin eventually, just by the looks of things, not yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is Sir Gordon Tietjens. Gordon is the former coach of the New Zealand men's national team in rugby sevens; the All Blacks Sevens. He started coaching the team in 1994 and had immediate success winning the Hong Kong 7's. He then went on to win the 7's world series on a record 12 times. Along the way the team also won the world cup in 2001 and 2013, and 4 Commonwealth Games gold medals. He stepped down as the coach in 2016 and took on the head coach of Somoa. He has been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame and in 2013 was knighted for his services to Rugby. Gordon is a coach with a life-long commitment to the service of people development. As the coach of the All Black 7's for 22 years, he helped 47 of his players go on to represent New Zealand Rugby Union. And on that list are some of the all time greats like Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen. He is fiercely determined and fired by a deep sense confidence that comes from the effort that goes into the preparation and planning of his teams. He also believes in the importance of nutrition, and intense training regimes that are intended to be tougher than anything they would face in an actual match as this prepares the athletes for better decision making when they are in the heat of battle on the field. After interviewing Sir Gordon, I can see why New Zealand is considered one of the most proud sporting nation on the planet. In this discussion some of the key highlights for me were: How he helps people build self-belief by encouraging them to express themselves as individuals and not be afraid of making mistakes. His views on mental toughness and the traffic light system he uses to classify players. The terrific story he shares about Roger Federer crying to illustrate his point that losing although painful, does not necessarily mean failure when you've given it your all. And How the onus is on the coach to select the right people who believe in the teams culture. And the importance of character and coachability in selecting these team members. This was a terrific and intense conversation with a master coach and I hope you enjoy it as much I did. Explore their experiences of living in this city.” Ponsonby Rugby Club was founded in 1874 & is the longest standing grassroots Club in Auckland.  For much of the 20th century, Ponsonby was a working-class suburb and the makeup of the teams reflected this. Grassroots club. The club was supportive of “outsiders” – Samoan players looking for a home ground for their all-Samoan team were denied by other clubs before Ponsonby welcomed them.  Strong Pacific links with the club (many older Pacific Aucklanders will still support Ponsonby wherever they live). Also welcomed the Ponsonby Heroes gay rugby team, and continues to support the NZ Falcons (NZ gay rugby team 2013-now) There are many famous faces and names that have donned the Blue & Black jersey including 48 All Blacks, from Dave Gallaher to Caleb Clarke; 22 Black Ferns, from Tangaloa Edwards to Cristo Tofa; and more than 250 men and 50 women who have represented Auckland A. One of those is legendary All Black Tuifa’asisina Sir Bryan Williams.  Knighted for his services to rugby in 2018, the 10th New Zealander to be so bestowed, Tuifa’asisina Bryan Williams is widely considered to be one of his country’s greatest-ever players.  Tuifa’asisina was the first Polynesian player to represent the All Blacks.  By the time he retired after New Zealand’s 1978 Grand Slam tour of the UK and Ireland, Williams had 66 tries to his name from 113 matches, 38 of them tests. A lawyer by trade, Williams won further honours with Ponsonby and Auckland as a coach and masterminded Samoa’s famous triumph over Wales at Rugby World Cup 1999 before teaming up with Graham Mourie at the Hurricanes. E12 - Professor Damian Hughes: A Change Management Catalyst and Professor of Organisational Psychology and Change. Read the Interview Transcript Below: Jo Palmer: 'We are doing an expert interview, and today I'm with Damian Hughes. We are talking largely about organisation development. So rather than me introduce your credentials, Damian, I think you'd do a better job than me.' Damian Hughes: 'Well, thanks for inviting me on, Jo. It's a real honour to sort of chat with you. For anyone listening it's probably easier to explain the jobs I do, to give some context. So I'm a professor of organizational psychology and change, that's my main role. But I work as a consultant psychologist across a wide range of organisations from business to sport to education. And then the third job I do is I write. So I've done a number of books very much around the topics of high performing cultures and how and how to make change happen.' The Barcelona Way Jo Palmer: 'Fantastic. Before we get into organisational development, let's touch on your most recent book, The Barcelona Way, which is currently ranking on Amazon's best sellers. Damian, what was your inspiration for writing this book?' Damian Hughes: 'Yeah, so I got approached a number of years ago by a publisher who asked if I'd be interested in writing a book on the topic of culture. And I said I'd love to do it. They said, would I be interested in trying to make it a little bit more accessible by viewing it through the lens of a sports team?' DH: 'Now, while that sounded an intriguing challenge, the reality is, like a lot of businesses, a lot of sports teams sort of pay lip service to the topic of culture. So they'll tell you how important it is. But their genuine level of investment, or interest, or focus tends to be quite minimal. So we narrowed it down to three teams that genuinely use culture as a competitive advantage. So the first one was the New Zealand Rugby Union team. The second one was the New England Patriots in the NFL. And then the third one was FC Barcelona.' 'Choose Barcelona' Damian Hughes: 'So I think it was air fair costs that meant the publisher said, "Choose Barcelona." But the reality was, it was the one that I felt had almost been unexplored and it was really rich to link it. So what the idea was was, I looked at culture through the lens of how Barcelona had decided to follow this process known as a commitment culture. And a commitment culture is where you have a really clear set of principles or behaviours, and you've got a really clear sense to why you exist. And what all the evidence says from all the research on the topic is a commitment culture tends to be a lot more successful over a sustained period than any other type of culture.' DH: 'So I look at the different types of cultures, but then specifically this idea of a commitment culture and how that can be used and harnessed within any organisation, so anywhere where people are coming together for a common cause, how you can use it to then drive competitive advantage.' Damian Hughes, the interview will conduct of him explaining organisational psychology and change   How Long Did it Take? Jo Palmer: 'Fantastic. Brilliant. How long did it take you to write it, Damian?' Damian Hughes: 'It ended up being about three years. So I was back and forth from Catalonia for about 18 months, back and forth doing interviews and things like that. But a lot of the research in terms of the most recent research and the papers, that took an awful lot of wading through to be able to give people sort of the idea that it isn't just about sport, it's about people that just happen to work in sport in this case. I'm lucky enough I've done a number of books, Jo. So what I've realised now is that you have to really be intrigued and love the topic, because it ends up dominating an awful lot of your waking hours. So it was a real three-year labour of love.' Favourite Book Jo Palmer: 'Wow.
