Welcome to another episode of the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Sarah Smith sits down with Dr. Brittany Anderson, a passionate rural family medicine physician from Alabama who's breaking the myth that private practice is dead. Dr. Anderson shares her inspiring journey from employed, academic medicine—where bureaucracy and lack of autonomy led to burnout—to launching her own thriving private practice in 2022. She opens up about the challenges and rewards of creating a sustainable, patient-centered clinic from the ground up, how she built a strong team, and the financial realities of going solo. Dr. Anderson also offers valuable advice for physicians considering private practice, emphasizing the importance of vision, efficient teamwork, and maintaining personal well-being along the entrepreneurial journey. If you've ever wondered what it takes to make private practice work in today's healthcare landscape, or you're navigating burnout yourself, this episode is packed with practical insights, encouragement, and hope. Tune in and get ready to be inspired! Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: Build on a Strong Foundation: Before launching your own practice, get crystal clear on your vision and mission. Let these guide every decision—from hiring to daily processes—so you create a practice aligned with your purpose. Teamwork & Efficiency Matter: Dr. Anderson credits her success to a well-integrated team. Investing in proper team formation, regular huddles, and empowering every staff member (from receptionist to nursing staff) leads to efficient care, happier patients, and less burnout. Start Lean, Grow Smart: You don't need the fanciest setup to begin. Focus on essential expenses, know your numbers, and market purposefully. Dr. Anderson started small, used powerful grassroots marketing, and filled her panel from day one—proof positive that strategic planning works! Meet Dr. Brittney Anderson: I'm Dr. Brittney Anderson, a board-certified family medicine physician and the founder and CEO of Anderson Family Care — a thriving private practice I launched in Alabama in 2022. I completed undergraduate studies at Duke University and medical school at UAB (Birmingham) I did my family medicine residency training at The University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). I know firsthand how overwhelming (and exhilarating) it can be to step away from traditional models and create something of your own. That's why I'm passionate about helping other physicians reclaim their freedom and joy in medicine by launching successful private practices of their own. In addition to my clinical and coaching work, I host the podcast, Physicians Hanging a Shingle, and I'm honored to serve as current Board Chair of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and Vice-Speaker for the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. I also serve on numerous boards throughout my community and state, working to amplify the voice of physicians and improve healthcare access in Alabama. Weighted vests can be useful, but let's be honest about the benefits.Topics discussed:(00:06) - Who's excited about a weighted vest? (00:48) - Why is Lindsay not jumping on getting a weighted vest? (02:46) - Does it help with bone density? (03:28) - Does it build more muscle and strength? (05:54) - Does it burn more body fat? (13:56) - The nuance of the studies being used to justify weighted vests (21:08) - I love food! (26:43) - I appreciate your words of encouragement Walking alone is not a strong enough stimulus for muscle or bone.Inactive postmenopausal women who walked with or without a vest for 18 months had no significant bone density changes (PMID: 22338922). Full breakdown belowEven wearing a vest for 8 hours/day (PMID: 40540267) or 10 hours/day (PMID: 30095153) showed minimal skeletal benefit. The muscle and bone gains you see in the research? They're mostly in untrained individuals doing loaded exercises like squats, lunges, and jumps with the vest (PMID: 10995045, 9467434, 17724395).In these cases, the vest is just a hands-free way to add weight — not magic. As people progress, they'll need more load than a vest alone can provide. And for fat loss?Calorie burn from vest-walking is only ~10–15% higher than without it. That's 30–50 kcal for an hour walk — about a single untracked bite of food.Long-term fat loss comes from managing intake, not chasing small increases in burn. Your diet is the real game changer. If you lift weights regularly, walk, and are mindful about food, a weighted vest probably isn't a “must-have” for you. it's most effective in the right context.Study Overview: Walking With vs. Without a Weighted Vest  PMID: 22338922Authors & Journal: Tantiwiboonchai N., Kritpet T., Yuktanandana P. in Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, 2011 (EurekaMag).Participants: 48 working women aged 30–60, randomly split into two groups: one walking with a weighted vest, the other walking without, on a treadmill 3×/week for 12 weeks (EurekaMag).Protocol: Vest group started walking without it for the first 2 weeks, then began adding 2% of body weight weekly until reaching 8% by week 6 (EurekaMag).FindingsBone Markers: Both groups showed large decreases in bone resorption (β-CrossLaps)—~19.1% for the vest group vs. ~21.8% for the non-vest group—no significant difference between them (EurekaMag).Physical Fitness: Improvements in leg and arm strength, endurance, and VO₂ max were seen in both groups—again, no significant differences between vest vs. non-vest walkers (EurekaMag).Bottom Line—What This MeansWalking, with or without a weighted vest, helped with fitness and reduced bone resorption—but wearing the vest didn't offer any extra benefit. So if you're thinking the vest is a cheat code for stronger bones or muscles… this study says otherwise.

Lawsen, Rebecca and Stephanie also reflect on what being a medical student in the COVID era has been like and how it has shaped their perspectives on healthcare and leadership. Perhaps Lawsen sums it up best by telling Hillary that after his experience in SOMA, “I can't imagine my career without being a leader, and an advocate for my colleagues, my patients and myself.” Don't miss this opportunity to hear what is on the minds of these future leaders in healthcare. Mentioned in this episode: https://studentdo.org/

Prompted by a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2019, Dr. Omolara transitioned from her career as a professor, researcher & pediatrician to co-founder of Strong Children Wellness — a multi-practice healthcare network that partners with communities to provide tech-enabled physical health, mental health, and social care for Medicaid-eligible & uninsured children and families, including those impacted by poverty, trauma and immigration inequities. As a social entrepreneur, she has secured over $1,000,000 in funding in less than 2 years, without loans or investors. This prompted her to create Melanin & Medicine, a healthcare consulting firm that supports mission-driven healthcare organizations serving communities of color to secure grants, contracts & alternative payments to help them scale and make greater impact.   Dr. Uwemedimo is a noted speaker on social entrepreneurship, funding strategies in healthcare, community-based healthcare for under-resourced communities and clinical & advocacy approaches to supporting anti-poverty health policies, including access to safety net programs, such as Medicaid, SNAP & TANF. She has been an invited speaker for several conferences & organizations including American Academy of Pediatrics, American Women's Medical Association, Health Tech 4 Medicaid, Center for Law and Social Policy, Immigration Advocates Network, United Hospital Fund & Greater NY Hospital Association.
