Luke Kuechly is considered to be one of the best NFL linebackers of all-time. He played 8 seasons with the Carolina Paranthers, beginning in 2012 when he led the league in tackles and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. In 2013, he became the youngest ever to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award and began a streak of 6 straight Pro Bowl selections. Luke's lists of awards piled up more each year including winning the NFL Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award Winner in 2017 before retiring from the NFL in 2019. His athleticism, vision and feel for the game made every one of his teams better going back to his high school days at St. Xavier in Cincinnati where he helped his 2007 team go 15-0 and take the #1 ranking in the country. He then attended Boston College where he set a school record for tackles (2nd in NCAA) and was a 2 time All-American. Since retiring, Luke is focusing on his family and is enjoying his time hunting and fishing. In this interview, Matt and Luke discuss some of his career highlights and the roots of his character formation growing up in Cincinnati.

He led the Bears to a 15-1 season in 1985. The "46" defense invented by Buddy Ryan allowed Singletary to be unblocked on virtually every play. That season, he recorded 109 solo tackles (52 assists), 3 sacks, 1 interception, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble, and 10 defended passes. He won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year,[7] and led a defense that was ranked 1st overall (1st against the rush; 3rd against the pass). Throughout the 1985 playoffs, Singletary provided stellar efforts in all 3 games. In the divisional game against the New York Giants at home, Singletary recovered a fumble early in the 1st quarter and a sack of quarterback Phil Simms on a 3rd down early in the 3rd quarter. The Bears went on to win 21–0. In the NFC Championship Game vs. the Los Angeles Rams, Singletary and the Bears dominated again. Coach Mike Ditka said that the day before the game, he was talking to the offense while Singletary was in the next room giving the defense a motivational speech. While it started out quiet, within minutes, Samurai Mike was screaming at the top of his lungs and the defensive players were throwing chairs and knocking over tables. The next day, he provided a memorable play where he stopped Eric Dickerson behind the line of scrimmage on third-and-short early in the 2nd quarter. The Bears would eventually go to win Super Bowl XX by beating the New England Patriots 46–10. In the game, Singletary broke up a pass that would have gone for a touchdown, delivered jarring hits to New England running back Craig James all game, and tied a Super Bowl record with 2 fumble recoveries.

The What Off-Season? Sports Podcast welcomes former NFL linebacker Levon Kirkland to the show. Levon spent 9 seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning NFL All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors twice. Kirkland was the 1997 NFL Linebacker Of The Year, and also played one season each with the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles. Levon Kirkland played college football at Clemson University from 1987-1991, coming onto the NCAA football scene as an outside linebacker for the Clemson Tigers. In 1989, Kirkland was the Gator Bowl MVP for the Tigers. Over the next two seasons, he would become the only underclassman for the Butkus Award and earn All-American honors from the Clemson Tigers and the NCAA. Levon would leave Clemson University as a two-time ACC champion. Levon was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, 38th overall in the 2nd round of the 1992 NFL draft. By 1995, he was known as one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Levon shared with us one of his craziest moments in his rookie year of the NFL, involving well-respected veteran Greg Lloyd. Levon Kirkland’s 1996 NFL season was a major one for his career. The aforementioned Greg Lloyd went down with a knee injury to start the year, and none other than Levon was called on to step up to the plate and fill the linebacker void. Kirkland shares what it was like being called on to fill the position for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Levon fulfilled an illustrious career in the National Football League, playing his final season in 2002 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Kirkland advanced to the NFC Championship that season, facing off against the vaunted 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If you know the history of the NFL, the 2002 Buccaneers are regarded to be potentially the greatest defense ever assembled in football. Levon Kirkland shared what made that Bucs team so vicious on the field, specifically from his legendary defensive perspective. Levon Kirkland explains what his defensive game would be like today compared to back in the 90s. After retiring from the NFL, Levon went back to Clemson in 2004 and obtained his sociology degree. Many people say athletes are set for life once playing a professional sport, but Kirkland shares what drove him to go back and get his education after his legendary NFL career. Levon Kirkland describes his transition from being a legendary NFL linebacker to coaching multiple levels of football. From being an outside linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals, to defensive coordinator for college and high school, he shares it all. Current Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker TJ Watt BALLED out this NFL season, leading in almost every major defensive category, but did not win the 2021 NFL Defensive Player Of The Year. Aaron Donald took home the hardware, despite trailing TJ Watt in almost everything. Former NFL linebacker Levon Kirkland explains who should have won the 2021 NFL Defensive Player Of The Year Award, and why.

When people talk about sports legends, they mean the best of the best of the best.Names everyone knows.Names that people don't forget.Well I had the privilege of meeting one of these legends a couple months back. From his presence alone, I knew immediately why he had achieved such an incredible level of athletic success.Ray Lewis is one of the most dominant defensive players in NFL history. He played his entire 17 year career with the Baltimore Ravens including two Super Bowl titles, Super Bowl MVP in 2000, and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice.Oh yeah, he's also a NYT bestselling author, father of 6, and a devoted philanthropist. But I'm just getting started. The wisdom Ray shared with me during our podcast conversation was so deep, so grounded, so based in results, that I was hanging on every word. Be sure to listen to the last half (we went for a while because it was such a good conversation). Ray goes DEEP into the role of faith, love, and respect in creating greatness.Ray has not had an easy life. He's faced pretty much every challenge you can imagine. But his definition of what greatness and being a man really means is spot on.I can't wait for you to hear the powerful perspective of this true greatness legend in Episode 415 on The School of Greatness. Some questions I ask:Was there a time when you switched away from being fueled by pain and anger? (14:43)Where would you be right now if your dad had been loving, caring, and attentive? (40:06)How did you prepare for the big games of your career? (1:02:57)In this episode, you will learn:What Ray was trying to prove by dedicating himself to wrestling in high school (6:42)Where Ray’s drive for dominance comes from (12:32)What The Rock was really like when he was playing football for the University of Miami (23:18)How Ray picked the number 52 for his football career (23: 58)The real reason he left college early to get drafted in the NFL (29:47)What the real challenge in life is (31:59)How Ray overcame a stutter he developed as a kid (37:34)Ray’s definition of what it means to be a man (48:19)The story behind how Ray got Michael Phelps to come out of retirement (1:14:18)Ray’s vision for his legacy – so powerful (1:19:18)What he hopes people will say about him after he’s gone (1:24:59)Plus much more…Learn more about your ad choices.
