I am always interested in *why* we do things, and equally in the excuses that we make when we are *not* pursuing our most intentional life. I sometimes feel that I can be an excuse-generating machine, and I am incredibly inspired when I learn of people who accomplish big goals in SPITE of the circumstances they face. They inspire me to live a fuller life.   Ntsiki Biyela is the Founder of Aslina Wines. She grew up in a rural village in South Africa, and graduated from university with a BSc in Agriculture, beginning her first job at a boutique winery in 2004. She won her first award in 2006, and 3 years later, was named Woman Winemaker of the Year in 2009. In 2016, she established her own company, Aslina Wines, naming it after her grandmother.   Ntsiki's story is one of beating all the odds and creating for the love of creating. Listen in on what inspires her to pursue a life of curiosity, pleasure and accomplishment, and learn more about Aslina Wines here: www.aslinawines.com. My current fave is the Sauvignon :-)

So, we know that most business ideas start out with a founder who is trying to solve a problem. For today's founder, Gwendolyn Ntsiki Bereng, it all started when she took her child to a multiracial pre-school in South Africa.  In 2019 she left her corporate job to launch the Johannesburg-based pre-school, Appletree Montessori where she is the Directress and leader of this institution for early childhood development. She also trains private groups of new parents in alternative ways to educate their little ones and collaborates with non-profits in the agricultural sector to educate children who are raising their own siblings. Ntsiki wants to do more than impact the children she looks after, she wants to have a positive impact in the communities where she works. There are many layers of complexity in this week's conversation and I hope you walk away with some thoughts and reflection on what it takes to solve a big problem.  And also some inspiration to tackle that issue that still keeps you awake at night. THE BRAVE ONES thrusts viewers into the middle of Ilanga, a working class community fighting to retain its land. The residents are actively protesting to keep a greedy and corrupt councilman from evicting everyone from their homes, so that he can build a hotel and casino on the land. What he doesn't know is that the mythical Tree of Life is rooted in the town. When Ntsiki and her sister Funeka are both killed by local criminals, Ntsiki is reborn and becomes the chosen host of "The Brave Ones." She now represents an ancient, supernatural power that must protect the people of Ilanga from the evils of mankind. Will Ntsiki be able to fulfill her duty, or will she be blinded by her desire for revenge after such a tragedy? This show strikes an interesting balance between myths and realism. While The Brave Ones' main plot is centered around a mythical power, the characters experience truthful and relatable issues. The show does start off at a slow place, and requires viewers to pay close attention to how all the pieces of the story are connected, which can be difficult to follow. For teen viewers, it creates a lot of questions about the people's power, myths, and morals. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

"I am where I am because somebody gave back. If they didn't, I might not have been here. The company is named after someone who believes in that, so it is my call, it's in my heart, it's me." - Ntsiki Biyela Ntsiki Biyela is a trailblazer in every sense of the word.  She went from being a domestic worker to becoming the first black woman winemaker in South Africa! Ntsiki grew up in Mahlabathini – a rural village in KwaZulu Natal.  She dreamed of becoming an engineer, but after finishing high school, Ntsiki's family didn't have money for her to continue with her education.  She ended up taking a job as a domestic worker. Ntsiki had been an impressive student, and so when her former school teachers heard about a scholarship for University, they went looking for her. The scholarship was to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University.  Winemaking wasn't something Ntsiki had ever thought about doing, or even knew anything about. In fact she shares that she used to drink cider, and thought that was wine! And to further complicate the situation, the scholarship was for classes that were all taught in Afrikaans –  a language Ntsiki didn't speak. But Ntsiki was undeterred, and immersed herself into her studies.  She graduated in 2003 with a BSc in Agriculture ((Viticulture and Oenology), and then joined boutique winery Stellekaya the following year.  Just five years into her career as a winemaker, Ntsiki was named Woman Winemaker of the Year. Ntsiki used her time at Stellekaya to learn everything she could about the wine business.  But she always knew that in order for her to be able to give back to her community in the way she wanted to, she would eventually need to branch out on her own. In 2016, Aslina Wines, which is named after Ntsiki's grandmother, was born.  Last year Ntsiki was named one of the world's top 20 most innovative women in food and drink by Fortune Magazine! Ntsiki is now in an enviable position – she has more demand for her wines than she can keep up with! what you'll learn in this episode How Ntsiki went from being a domestic worker to becoming South Africa's first black, female winemaker Why Ntsiki named her winery ‘Aslina' The biggest dream Ntsiki has for Aslina What it's like being one of only a few black winemakers and even fewer black female winemakers in the world What it meant to Ntsiki to be name winemaker of the year The terrible advice a marketer tried to give Ntsiki about naming one of her wines ‘Msasane' The greatest lesson she learned from working as a domestic servant What it was like attending university – in a language she didn't understand The woman that Ntsiki most admires The best advice she has ever been given What Ntiski is most grateful for Why one of Ntsiki's wines is named after the Acacia tree What Ntsiki is most afraid of What Ntsiki's favorite wine is The not so surprising (but funny) thing that Ntsiki always carries with her everywhere she goes What Ntsiki's “I am…” is Follow NDINI on: Website: http://www.ndini.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NDINImedia/ Twitter: @NDINImedia Instagram: @ndinimedia Follow The NDINI Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher and SoundCloud

In today's show we look at the importance of youth empowerment in Africa. An alarmingly large number of young Africans are dis-empowered and unemployed. We usually look to governments to solve the problem but what can we do to economically empower the youth of the continent, especially since we are the youngest continent on the planet. This is discussed with Ntsiki Khunju and Makhoape Letsie from Afrika Tikkun. We then have a look at organizations that are available for youth to receive mentorship and training as well as get skills to develop them as entrepreneurs. A more interview with Ntsiki and Makhoape helps us understand more about Afrika Tikkun and the work that they do in youth development from cradle to career. Finally the rumor doing the rounds in the 21st century is that we are all being replaced by machines and will end up all jobless but have we taken the time to look at jobs that are actually being created because of technology? We take a look at the jobs that didn't even exist 10 years ago and how young people can capitalize on this.--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ijere-africa/support
