Welcome to Episode 1563 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Lorenzo Piccin Grifalco of Grifalco Winery this week on The Next Generation. The Next Generation where Victoria Cece interviews young Italian wine people shaking up the wine scene. More about the winery The Grifalco company was founded in 2004 by the desire of Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin to start a new path after having produced Nobile di Montepulciano for 20 years, focusing on what is considered the most important grape variety in southern Italy; the project is currently carried out by their sons Lorenzo and Andrea. The company has a surface of 16 hectares with age of the vineyards ranging from 10 years up to 80 years, divided into several municipalities of the Vulture, this because being able to work with different land allows you to have greater complexity in the wines that are produced. To date, the vineyards are located in the municipalities of Maschito, Forenza, Ginestra and Venosa, where the cellar also resides. Lorenzo, 30, studied Viticulture and Oenology in Alba and takes care of all the company's production, from the management of the certified organic vines to everything that follows, once the grapes are brought to the cellar to turn them into wine. Andrea, 26, takes care of the commercial, the image of the company, the relationship with the press and the support abroad of our importers. On The Road Edition Welcome to Episode 1551 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today we are bringing you a throwback (the first of several to come) to Stevie's conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Andrea Mullineux More about today's guest Andrea developed her passion for wine at the family dinner table, growing up in San Francisco. After studying Viticulture and Oenology at UC Davis, and completing a handful of harvests in the Napa Valley, Andrea worked in Stellenbosch, and then in Chateauneuf where on the same trip, she met Chris at a wine festival in Champagne! Andrea's love for South African wine (and Chris) brought her back to South Africa where they learnt that their compatibility extended into the vineyards and cellar. In 2014 Andrea was invited to join the Cape Winemakers Guild and in 2016 she was awarded International Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast. When Andrea is not hard at work in the cellar, her creative energies flow into the kitchen where she loves cooking up a storm, glass of wine in hand. Jean Cao, oenologist, is the special guest on today's show after a global news review with Sasha Kehoe. News Review After a few weeks away it's great to be back in the studio with a long-overdue look-back at the week's / the summer's news with Sasha Kehoe. And it's been a busy summer! Once more, the blond-one, whose name I won't mention here, has his mug-shot across most news feeds, and many more besides too. Our news review covers everything from the Prigozhin plane crash in Russia to the baby serial killer Lucy Letby in the UK. Wildfires seem to be another consistent summer story in recent years: Hawaii, of course, plus much of southern Europe. Did you watch the cable car rescue in Pakistan? Or the Spain - England World Cup Final? Back home to Luxembourg, the Schueberfouer begins again, and election season starts with some very young candidates indeed. Oenology with Jean Cao I had never heard of oenology until I met Jean Cao. Originally from Mexico, Jean trained as a chemical engineer focussing on organic and food chemistry at UDLA, and then specialising in fermentation and distillation processes. After some internships in the wine regions of Mexico, Jean moved to France to complete a Masters degree in viticulture-agronomy in Montpellier, followed by another Masters in oenology in Bordeaux. He is currently specialising in pedology and soil analysis. Jean has worked all over the world - Mexico, South Africa, US, and in the famous French wine-making regions of Saint-Emilion, Medoc-Pauillac, Châteauneuf du Pape and the Languedoc. Here in Luxembourg, Jean Cao is a consultant oenologist for the Independent winemakers professional organisation OPVI, Organisation Professionnelle des Vigerons Indépendants, since 2018. From optimal plant cultivation, all the way through to bottling, there are many moments where precision and expertise can help define the outcome for the best potential wines. Jean's role requires the discernment of latent potential inherent within specific vineyard plots, when precisely to harvest, ensuring the fermentation process goes smoothly, which wines to blend in which way, and finally the bottling process. These steps require the rigour of complex science and nature, plus the uncontrollable factors such as climate and weather. Perhaps the best word to sum up the art of his work is 'terroir'. As ever, you can find all the shows on Apple and Spotify! You can tune into Lisa's shows on RTL Today Radio Saturdays at 11am, Sundays at noon and Tuesdays at 10am.

And, it was completely different.” “We were just constantly cycling through eight presses and filling them, pressing them, emptying them, cleaning them. Then they get filled again, then pressed again, emptied and cleaned. And this winery worked 24 hours and we worked 12 hour shifts.” “It's exactly as you said where you'd gone from being this very idealistic student with lofty ideas of how wine is made with ideas that could fill a million romantic novels about wine making into something that was completely the opposite. It was the antithesis of everything that you would understood and thought of wine making about, and that was a bit of a shock.” “I knew that viticulture in India is very different because we don't have winters or we don't have very harsh winters.” “Winters are very mild, and so there's no dormancy, and so you need to do your viticulture slightly differently.” “We were taught, and now we know that grape wines can handle temperatures of up to 50, 52 degrees before they die.” “Along with the concentration of the fruity characters, you also had the concentration of the tannins.” “The winery where I worked was seven hours' drive from Bangalore where my wife worked so it was starting to become a little bit unsustainable.” “We started looking at places, at countries where you might find the vineyards to be closer to the cities so we could both pursue our careers and still be together.” “Canada turned out to be one of those countries which we both liked. And so we decided we'd move to Canada.” “We agreed that I'd work as a part-time consulting winemaker (at a winery near Alexandria).” “On the one hand I can make wine and I understand the production aspect of it. And on the other hand, I get to sell it and see it served and talk about wines and how they taste, how they're made, and basically the marketing side of it.” “There are certain aspects of life here that are unusual for someone coming from India. One being very positive is that I have never seen people who are so happy for so much of the time.”

So you could spend your holiday working the harvest.” “My idea of how wine was made was completely different from what it turned out to be.” “I thought it would all just be press a button here, press a button there, and then the wine gets made and there you go. Bob's your Uncle . Then that first harvest kind of opened my eyes to it. The first day at the winery, I spent half an hour just like wrapping up hoses to make them neat and circular.” “There's so much organizational stuff that you have to keep your eye on and keep thinking about.” “I came to absolutely despise beautiful days because I knew that on the days where the weather was very good, the harvester would be running full time and you'd get truck upon truck upon truck and we'd sometimes we'd work 14, 15 hours days.” “On the days when it rained, it was six hours, and then they'd say, well, the harvester can't go anymore. So it was done for the day. I would love those raining days.” “The first time that I got to be a winemaker, so to speak, where I thought about how I wanted to do it, how I wanted it to turn out and things like that. And that was great fun.” “Working in this very, very small winery gave me a little bit of perspective about how an establishments of that size, every decision you take matters a great deal because you're making only 4,000 liters of wine.” “You can't really afford to mess up a thousand liters of wine, because that's a quarter of a year's production.”

We are a small wine brand named after an eclectic group of 1930s metropolitan refugees known as the Dunites who settled the beach dunes of San Luis Obispo county. This group proudly described themselves as a collection of free thinkers, artists, nudists, and poets. Together they shared meals, cohabited a mutual gathering place, philosophized, dissented, and generally allowed one another to live and express themselves freely outside of the cultural norms of the time.Dunites Wine Co. draws inspiration for this project from the remote beauty of the coastal dunes and the progressive ambition of the Dunites to aspire towards a clear goal; to produce pure and elegant wines that respect the coastal influence of vineyard sites located on the uplifted seafloor and ancient sand dunes of the SLO Coast. Combining diverse vineyard sites and meticulous farming with traditional techniques in the cellar allow for these small production wines to express the distinct characteristics of their sites. We are a husband - wife team who combine our experiences to craft these wines. Together we have worked for over a dozen wineries and vineyards around the world where the people, cultures, and wines have influenced our approach to growing and making wine. Rachel Eck holds a degree in Viticulture from Cal Poly SLO and gained experience working under iconic producers such as Stephen Ross, Paul Lato, and Te Kairanga. Rachel is a licensed Pest Control Advisor and manages our tasting room in downtown SLO. Tyler Eck followed a degree from UCSB with a Viticulture and Oenology degree from Lincoln University in New Zealand. His travels led to working for several pioneering wineries including Dry River, Peay Vineyards, Stefano Lubiana, and Domaine Francois Villard. Since 2014 Tyler has been the Associate Winemaker for Fess Parker Winery. We live in Pismo Beach, with our black lab Cassidy, where we are only a few miles drive from the vineyards we work with.

Patrick Duffeler purchased his tract of land called Wessex Hundred just outside of Williamsburg, Virginia in 1983 and would start to plant his vineyard in 1985.  Patrick was born in Belgium and after gaining his degree in Economics & Finance from the University of Rochester, New York he started his professional career with Eastman Kodak. He would go on to work in the International Division of Philip Morris in Switzerland as the Director of Marketing and ultimately become President of Fragrances Selective. It was in 1983 that his wife Peggy had convinced them that he needed to slow down and after an exhaustive search they landed in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Along with producing world quality wine Patrick Duffeler has an amazing country Inn called Wedmore Place and several restaurants on the Estate at Wessex Hundred. His winemaker Matthew Meyer came to Williamsburg via California where he earned a degree at UC Davis in both Oenology and Viticulture and after a short stint at Grigich Hills Wine Cellars was recruited by Heitz Wine Cellars and learned directly from Joe Heitz.  Matthew moved to Virginia and took the position as Winemaker in 2002 and has been producing some of Virginia's highest quality wines ever since.HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INTERVIEW: a). Matthew recounts his introduction to wine as a young boy when he father was a Burgundian wine drinker vs Claret even though they were from Englandb). He talked about what a gift it was to work for Joe Heitz early in his career.c). He relays his father who was a big Burgundy aficionado would send him bottles of Burgundy because he said he would ruin his palette drinking all that California wine.d). When I ask Matthew about Climate Change he points to the continued issue with late frosts in the Spring and how they are getting later and later.e). Patrick brought an interesting perspective to the art of tasting wine and how when he learned to be a Perfumer when he was running an Internation Fragrance company the professionals told him that they couldn't smell and sniff fragrances and remember more than 18 before they got fatigued. He said the same for wine at the most.  Tasting a 100 wines in one sitting you only remember maybe 3 or 4 at the most.f). Matthew surprised me with his answer to my question about what was that one bottle of wine you had that made you go, that's it, now I get it.  Wine can be that ethereal.  g). Patrick's answer to that question was quite different as he tells the story of his Father taking them to a great restaurant in Perigord and he was served Foie Gras with Monbazillac.h). Matthew shares his theory about why Ca wine is so much higher in Alcohol than it was several decades ago.  he ties it to the new Rootstocks since AXR1 has been replaced.i). In this episode of Wine and Dime Kerrie Beene guest hosts and we bring back a Webinar that Kerrie did. In it she is talking about the dynamics that come into play while dealing with loved ones when getting older. She talks about the barriers and the downfalls of not having a plan and some of things to think about. This a great episode for anyone of any generation. Winery - https://www.livingrootswine.com/ (Living Roots Winery) Living Roots is an urban winery in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York [Colleen's hometown] and a not-so-urban winery in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia [Sebastian's hometown]. Though Living Roots was founded in 2016, our legacy began six generations back with Thomas Hardy, Seb's great-great-great grandfather. In 1850, at the age of 20, Thomas immigrated to the new British colony, Australia, and jumpstarted 150+ years of family winemaking. Seb grew up in his dad's vineyards, particularly in the Kuitpo subregion of the Adelaide Hills, got a degree in Viticulture and Oenology in Adelaide, with an exchange in California, and worked vintages all over the world.  On the other side of the world, Colleen grew up in Rochester, New York [spending time around the Finger Lakes region], studied marketing, worked in corporate America, and headed to Adelaide for the 2014 vintage at Hardy's Tintara Winery when she was ready for a new adventure. We established Living Roots in 2016, and started splitting our time between South Australia and New York, doing two harvests each year. We source grapes from different vineyards and growers, including from both of our families, and some wines are made year-to-year while others are one-offs. In the Finger Lakes, our focus is on rich whites and sparklings, and in South Australia, it's vibrant, medium-bodied reds. Each vintage is an opportunity to explore new vineyards and varieties, and our aim is to highlight the terroir and natural strengths of these diverse regions, making wines with wild ferments, minimal inputs and maximum deliciousness. We opened the Living Roots urban winery and tasting room in Rochester, New York in 2017, bringing our Finger Lakes and South Australian wines to the Upstate New York market first. Now, we're putting more emphasis on Living Roots's presence in Australia, expanding distribution and setting up a cellar door with tastings by appointment in Kuitpo where we have our small winery. Stay tuned for what's next! Thanks for listening and be sure to like, rate, subscribe and share. This episode we are joined by Josh Cormier, Founder and Distiller at Pepprell Distilling Company which is located in Moorefield, Ontario. Pepprell Distillery currently produces a vodka from 100% molasses. They also produce a craft gin infused with essential botanicals such as juniper berries, lemon, cardamom, coriander, and a little black pepper.  Originally born and raised in London, Ontario, Josh started experimenting with alcohol production while attending Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast. It was at this time that Josh worked at a brew your own shop where he learned about alcohol production and developed an appreciation for the process. After graduating university with a Philosophy degree, Josh enrolled in the Wine and Sprits Education Trust (WSET) in Vancouver and consequently moved to Canada west coast.  After several years of study in the WSET program, Josh moved back to Ontario as he was accepted in to the Viticulture and Oenology program at Brock University in Niagara. While attending Brock, Josh lived in a house with all wine making students. It was at this time that Josh and his roommates had a competition to decide who could make the best gin. Josh's creation won. It was at this time that Josh started put the work in to developing a business plan to open a distillery.  Over the ensuing years, Josh continued to make small advances to opening this dream of opening a distillery a reality. Josh approached several people that he thought would be valuable in opening this business. In 2018, Josh and his partners started small scale contract distilling. By February 2020, Josh had a facility, the licensing and the pieces were in place. Then March 2020 and Covid hit. Josh did a quick pivot to making hand sanitizer for several months. By the fall of 2020, business had stabilized enough and all the energy and effort went back to making spirits.  Links Josh Cormier @boxerandbooze Pepprell Distilling Co. @pepprelldistilling Podcast Artwork by Zak Hannah @zak.hannah

We continue our series of podcast episodes featuring women in the wine business this week, since there is no new show today due to Coronavirus coverage on home station KSRO in Santa Rosa. This episode with Barbara Lindblom remembering Mary Ann Graf was originally recorded and broadcast  on April 17, 2019.  Mary Ann Graf Barbara Lindblom visits with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today, to remember Mary Ann Graf, a pioneering, iconic local winemaker who passed away recently. She also worked at Simi Winery (as laboratory director) then as a winemaker in some other places. She is now retired. Mary Ann Graf studied at UC Davis and was the first woman in the US to graduate with a degree in Oenology. She was the winemaker at Simi Winery, the first in a series of notable women winemakers there. Then, she ran a successful laboratory testing company called Vinquiry, which performed testing services for wineries. She was the first woman on the board of directors of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. Here is a page about Mary Ann Graf at the Santa Clara University Women in Wine website. Mary Ann Graf worked with André Tchelistcheff. They will taste a non-vintage Simi North Coast Burgundy, which Dan can see is from 1973, from the code printed at the bottom of the bottle. This was Mary Ann's first year at Simi. Dan bought these wines at Trader Joe's for $1.99 per bottleMost of the major wineries in those days made a generic so-called Burgundy and most of them were blends. Mary Ann Graf started Vinquiry at about that time. Dan knows it as one of the most professional wine analysis laboratories at the time. She had a lot of clients in Alexander Valley. Barbara Lindblom started working at a harvest at Mondavi with Zelma Long. When Zelma got the job as Simi, she asked Barbara to join her, and she worked there for 10 years. Dan Berger says that Zelma Long and André Tchelistcheff were a strong team, since André was more inclinded to understanding wine from its sensory perception and Zelma understood it more from the technical standpoint. Barbara remembers Mary Ann was so generous with her time and her thoughts, and a steadfast friend. Her consulting business grew and grew because she and her partner were so smart and patient with their clients. Dan remembers when he and Mary Ann were judges in a competition in the midwest where the wine was really bad. Dan remembers she was so kind and quiet. A winemaker from Illinois asked her, “Did you like my wine?” She replied kindly, “We can talk about this, you've got potential.” She could not say anything negative about it. As a consultant, she would tell her clients what's there and what can make it better. She was always looking out for the best long-term solution, not a quick fix. They taste a 2000 Old Vine Zinfandel from Fanucci vineyards and a 2016 Stonestreet Estate Chardonnay that is a good example of Alexander Valley fruit having enough acidity to age well. Barbara Lindblom spent some time in France and Spain as well as working as a winemaker in California. Dan brought in a Simi North Coast Burgundy from 1973. This was Mary Ann Graf's first year at Simi. It is only 12% alcohol, mostly Carignane and a bit of Zinfandel. Dan says that wineries had their blends with all kinds of different varietals that they all called Burgundy. They were the varietals that were in their high end portfolios, but the leftover wines were also good. Dan Berger tasted wine with Joe Coulombe at Trader Joes in the 1970s and remembers tasting these wines. Giuseppe and Pietro Simi selected their location, five years before Italian Swiss Colony was founded. They used to call a generic red wine “Mountain Burgundy” often based on Carignane which was a workhorse variety that was never intended to be aged. Dan discovered some old bottles of it in the back of his cellar and they were fine. There was a little oxidation. There was some fruit flavor, but dried fruit,
