Robin Aisha Landsong, born in the US, was abducted and drugged at eight years old. When she woke up she gradually realized she had been abandoned in Rhodesia, Africa at the height of its 1977 civil war. She survived two near-death experiences, including a gunshot wound to the head, and was briefly adopted by a local family. Robin's astonishing story, told in her new book Loving Bravely, is one of resilience and determination to face trauma, survive, and thrive. Long after returning to the US, Robin spent years seeking the location where she had lived in Africa, searching for survivors of the black family that discovered a dying white child and adopted her. Today Robin is a Transformational Speaker, Visual Artist, Medicine Singer, and Medical/Health Intuitive. Her specialties as a Craniosacral Therapist are trauma resolution, the neurobiology of connection, and restoring the natural rhythms in the body. She shares her story and numerous insights on today's show. The exhibition is titled “Touching Roots, Black Ancestral Legacies in the Americas”, and it is located on the third floor of the Art of the Americas wing in the MFA. This exhibition is included with general admission, so there is no extra cost to see it, and we highly recommend you check it out. The first interview we are going to present to you was with Martina Tanga, a curator of the MFA's Art of the Americas collection. Martina was our original contact for this story, and she graciously introduced us to the other “Touching Roots” contributors. We were able to talk to a bunch of the curators and artists involved in the exhibition, and for the sake of clarity, we are going to release these in chronological order, so you can learn with us. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy the show.Episode artwork by Loïs Mailou Jones, Ubi Girl from Tai Region, 1972Boston Art Podcast is made by Brian Huntress & Theodora EarthwurmsThanks to Joel Mongeon of Black Market Therapy for additional editing. ___Text below sourced from https://www.mfa.org/exhibition/touching-rootsAfrica is at once a point of origin and a myriad of associations—real and imagined—for many Black artists working in the Americas. In the 20th century, some artists self-consciously responded to writer and philosopher Alain LeRoy Locke's call to engage with “those ancestral arts.” Others continued to practice African artistic traditions passed down through generations. This exhibition traces narratives of Blackness across the Atlantic world by bringing together work from artists who absorbed and reinterpreted African artistic practices, sacred customs, and cultural expressions. The artworks honor ancestral spirits and Black legacies through painting, sculpture, textiles, and dance. Artists from throughout the Americas are represented—with a special focus on those from or working in New England, like Allan Rohan Crite, Napoleon Jones-Henderson, Ifé Franklin, Bryan McFarlane, Karen Hampton, and Stephen Hamilton. Highlights from the collection include Ubi Girl from Tai Region (1972) by Loïs Mailou Jones, African Woman (about 1933) by James Richmond Barthé, Untitled (1943) by Wifredo Lam, and George Jackson (1971) by Kofi Bailey.Visitors can explore how shared cultural heritages created connections that formed the basis of communities, highlighting the importance of Africa's presence in the Americas. By turning their gaze inward and toward Africa, Black artists grounded their artistic expressions and infused strength and insight into their work. This exhibition accompanies “Stories Artists Tell: Art of the Americas, the 20th Century,” a suite of galleries spanning place and time, and exploring different themes surrounding 20th-century art from the Americas.Outside scholars and collaborators have been essential in the conceptualization and planning of this exhibition. Many thanks to Chenoa Baker, Kyrah Malika Daniels, Napoleon Jones-Henderson, and Stephen Hamilton.

I talked with an astronaut!  Welcome to SavvyTalk season 5, new episode is out! I'm joined this time by Sara Sabry, the first Arab, Egyptian and African woman to ever go up in Space. She made history on August 4th of 2022 by flight on Blue Origin's NS-22 mission, this day forward we all stand on her shoulders. All little girls and women of the region and beyond are proud, inspired by her achievement and as she said: “They can finally see themselves represented in space”.  I had the chance to talk with her before the launch of the Shepherd Suborbital rocket and a couple of days after she landed. You will be able to listen these two moments on today's episode. It was fascinating seeing the excitement and expectation when we first talked and then listening to her sharing the unique and personal experience was really impactful.  We also talked about her trajectory, how she was prepared to the mission—breathing exercises and envisioning being one of tools used—she also shared her nexts steps after comeback to earth: working on her non-profit company Deep Space Initiative to increase the opportunities of space research in the Middle East region, and as a mechanical and biomedical engineer keep doing her PhD research focused on developing the next generation of planetary spacesuits. Expect to see more and more of Sara Sabry because she is continuing to do astronaut training to be qualified to do research on space. My Egyptian heart is full after this amazing episode.  Links: Sara Sabry's social Deep Space Initiative: Website • Instagram

It reminds me of that Winston Churchill quote “Never, never, never give up”. If we could all build such resilience in our lives, we could truly do even more extraordinary things. One line for Saray I will never forget is that “It always seems impossible until it's done”. Saray is also a mother, transformational coach, and philanthropist, helping such organizations as Kids Haven, The Lunchbox Fund, and Mandela Libraries. Learn more about Saray at www.saraykhumalo.com

On this week's show, we look at how reforming marital rights could be the biggest first step toward gender equality. We found the idea for this show from the World Bank's Women, Business, and the Law (WBL) project, which ranks 190 economies every year for how well their policies are for gender equality. According to the WBL, South Africa has made the third-most progress regarding gender equality of any country in the world over the last 50 years, largely due to the women's movement being interconnected with the fight to end apartheid. During the late 1980s and early '90s, many reforms passed in South Africa propelled women's rights, particularly in expanding married women's ability to sign legally binding contracts, register businesses, and open bank accounts without their husband's consent. But decades after apartheid ended, one law remained on the books that continued to plague Black women, particularly ones seeking a divorce. We talk to Agnes Sithole, whose divorce case shook her country's legal system. We also speak to Sharita Samuel, the lawyer who brought Sithole's case before the Constitutional Court, South Africa's highest court.Special thanks this week to Nisha Arekapudi and Natalia Mazoni Silva Martins from the WBL, who wrote the case study about South Africa's gender equality gains and spotlighted Sithole's legal fight. And big thanks to producer Elna Schutz, who flew out from Johannesburg to Durban just to record the interview with Sithole and Samuel. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Happy New Year fam! 2021 taught me so many lessons! I experienced so many twists and turns, and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that my life will turn out the way it did by the end of the year! Whether it be a lesson learnt or an experience I had, my story can not be complete without acknowledging the strength of a woman; THE AFRICAN WOMAN! This week, I'd love to share my pregnancy story with you! Again, this is one of those moments where I have to brace myself to be vulnerable, which I must admit, I am still getting used to. You see, it's not that other women don't deserve appreciation, but African/black women are more likely to encounter fertility-related issues than women of other races.
