Anthony Fennell, an Irish journalist and playwright, is assigned to cover the underwater cables that carry the world's information. The sum of human existence—words, images, transactions, memes, voices, viruses—travels through the tiny fiber-optic tubes. But sometimes the tubes break, at an unfathomable depth. Fennell's journey brings him to the west coast of Africa, where he uncovers a story about the raw human labor behind the dazzling veneer of the technological world. He meets a fellow Irishman, John Conway, the chief of mission on a cable repair ship. The mysterious Conway is a skilled engineer and a freediver capable of reaching extraordinary depths. He is also in love with a South African actress, Zanele, who must leave to go on her own literary adventure to London. When the ship is sent up the coast to repair a series of major underwater breaks, both men learn that the very cables they seek to fix carry the news that may cause their lives to unravel. At sea, they are forced to confront the most elemental questions of life, love, absence, belonging, and the perils of our severed connections. Can we, in our fractured world, reweave ourselves out of the thin, broken threads of our pasts? Can the ruptured things awaken us from our despair? Resoundingly simple and turbulent at the same time, Twist (Random House, 2025) is a meditation on the nature of narrative and truth from one of the great storytellers of our times. Colum McCann is the author of eight novels, three collections of stories and two works of non-fiction. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he has been the recipient of many international honours, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. His work has been published in over 40 languages. He is the President and co-founder of the non-profit global story exchange organization, Narrative 4. He lives in New York with his wife Allison and their family.

30 years ago - in 1994, the first mixed-race election in South Africa's history was held. The African National Congress (ANC), led by Nelson Mandela, won in a landslide. Since then, the ANC has continued to win the elections, and has remained the ruling party in South Africa. In May this year, the dissatisfaction over lack of progress led to the ANC for the first time ever receiving less than 50% of the votes. August 28th, The Norwegian Committee for Africa and Norwegian People's Aid invites you to a seminar about South Africa in the 30 years since Apartheid, and the way ahead for the country in Boksen at Kulturhuset. Did ANC keep their promises, and has South Africa become the inclusive and rainbow coloured society people were sold in 1994? In the panel we have with us Thapelo Mohapi, Secretary General of Abahlali baseMjondolo, a South African organisation that works with shackdwellers right to land and housing, xenophobia and other forms of discrimination in South Africa. Last year, Amnesty International organised a petition to pressure the South African police to investigate harassment and killings of leaders and members in Abahlali - that forced Thapelo to go into hiding. We also have with us Zanele Baqwa, one of Norway's most prominent anti-apartheid activists. Zanele grew up in South Africa during Apartheid, before moving to Norway in 1965, where she became central in the European mobilisation against apartheid. In 1994, after apartheid ended, Baqwa returned to South Africa to work as a psychiatrist, but has since found her way to Norway again. Liv Tørres is the international secretary of the Norwegian Labour Union (LO). From 1987 to 2008 she lived in South Africa, where she joined the South African labour movement and actively participated in the anti-apartheid movement. She later wrote her doctorate on the role the labour movement played in ending apartheid. The panel was moderated by Andreas Saaghus, Program Advisor working with Southern Africa in Norwegian People's Aid.

In conversation with Zanele Fengu, Mosupatsila Nare and Samrawit Getaneh The episode was hosted by Samrawit Getaneh (HRDA class of 2016, Ethiopia), who welcomed and engaged in a conversation with Zanele Fengu and Mosupatsila Nare (HRDA class of 2022, South Africa and Zimbabwe, respectively). The speakers highlighted that millions of Africans are displaced each year due to climate change related factors and the figures are growing by the millions each year, making the situation grave. Displacements are occurring owing to disasters including floods, droughts, windstorms and wildfires raging across the continent. Additionally, displacements are also occurring due to climate action that aims to conserve carbon sinks without using a rights based approach, thereby displacing indigenous communities from their lands. Various regional legal instruments and policy documents are key in tackling climate displacement and the various challenges that arise with it, one instrument among many is the the Kampala Convention, the first ever legally binding instrument in the protection and assistance of IDPs in Africa. On the other hand, a particularly worrying reality is the potentially devastating effects of a deficient legal system which fails to adequately address the impact of climate change; particularly the lack of consensus on the legal position of climate refugees which leaves this demographic at risk of an array of human rights violations. Hence the need to effectively implement existing laws such as the Kampala convention, but also the imperative to extend protection to climate refugees, was highlighted in the discussion. The speakers concluded by noting the interrelatedness of various challenges posed by the climate crisis and the need for an “all hands on deck” approach in using human rights law to tackle the problems of climate displaced persons. Zanele Fengu has a keen interest in all things human rights, but particularly refugee law and climate justice. Zanele currently works as a legal researcher at Corruption Watch, the South African chapter of Transparency International. Her work focuses on land and mining rights, as well as governance and leadership. Mosupatsila Nare is a human rights lawyer. She has experience in the African Human Rights system having served at the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights in 2023. Currently she works as a Programs Manager at Women's Institute for Leadership Development, a Zimbabwean Civil Society Organisation focusing on women's empowerment and active participation in leadership and governance processes including climate justice. Samrawit Getaneh is a Senior Child Rights Protection Officer at the African Committee. She is particularly interested in mechanisms of human rights protection, the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups and minority groups, the nexus between human rights and development as well as climate change and human rights. She is also a current PhD researcher at the University of the Western Cape. This conversation was recorded on 16 May 2024.

This week, Liezl is joined by the newly-crowned Mrs Globe South Africa 2022 - Zanele Sibiya! Zanele joins Liezl to talk about her wonderfully inspiring story, the origins of her fascinating name, how the world of pageantry has changed and evolved in the past decades and how the empowerment of women and the telling of their stories are leading to true global change. Mrs. Globe is one of the most recognized and celebrated international pageants for Mrs. in the world. With a 25 year history and over 80 countries participating, it celebrates, empowers and uplift women from all cultures and walks of life. This was the first year that Mrs Globe was licensed in South Africa. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pageantry has always played a huge part of South African culture and brought people together in ways that inspired and ignited a sense of community. Inclusion in the world of pageantry is evolving now, to include not just a small section of womanhood, but a broader selection of powerful women, all of whom have stories of their own. When life pushes you down, the only way to come back is to pick yourself up and move. Not only are you demonstrating strength to yourself, you're also setting an example to those who look up to you. Women have always been held back from fulfilling their true potential in all corners of society. With the changing of attitudes now comes a real opportunity for us to plant ourselves in the spaces we didn't inhabit before. This is a time in which we can change the world forever. BEST MOMENTS 'I am grateful for the evolvement of women' 'A woman is a woman, whether you have a child or not, we all have a story to tell' 'They need to know that even in the darkest time you need to get up and move' 'Understanding who you are is very important' EPISODE RESOURCES Mrs Globe South Africa - https://mrssouthafricaglobe.com Mrs Globe - https://www.mrsglobe.com/mrs-globe https://www.instagram.com/zanele_xenn/https://www.facebook.com/zanele.x.radebe VALUABLE RESOURCES Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthespotlightwithliezlInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthespotlightwithliezlFacebook personal: https://www.facebook.com/lcolditzvanrooyen/Instagram personal: https://www.instagram.com/liezl_colditzvanrooyen/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/van-rooyen-liezl/ ABOUT THE PODCAST In the Spotlight was born as a platform to share, broadcast and promote the interesting, wonderful and inspiring things that some of the people who crossed Liezl's path have done.
