To exit your business on your own terms and fund your ideal post-business life, increasing its value is essential. One powerful way to achieve this is by adopting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. Unfortunately, many collision shop owners are unaware of how ESG practices can significantly impact their business's value, leading to missed opportunities for growth, profitability, and a stronger market position. Join Matt DiFrancesco and Eddie Hightower, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Social Responsibility at Caliber Collision, as they dive into how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices can drive long-term business growth, enhance business reputation, attract valuable talent, and ultimately boost the overall value of your shop. Hill's Pet Nutrition just released their 2024 State of Shelter Adoption Report, and you may be surprised to learn that 1 in 3 people would be more likely to adopt if foster-to-adopt were an option at their shelter, or that 64% of respondents would foster if their costs were covered. To capitalize on these insights and learn how to grow your foster program, listen in as The Association's Katherine M. Shenar sits down with Kelly Furnas and Stephani Coe of Carrollton, TX-based Operation Kindness, who will offer tips and techniques they used to increase their foster program by 35% in a year.

It's not unusual for an organization to drift away from its mission statement, purpose, and goals. Over time, the landscape in a community can change to the point that the animals your organization was founded to help don't need that help as they once did. In Carrolton, Texas, the leadership of https://bit.ly/3qpxnyQ (Operation Kindness) knew their organization was already doing lots of great work. Still, they wondered if they were doing the right work to save the most lives. They knew they wanted to be more direct in supporting Dallas Animal Services and other regional municipal shelters, so they made several tough decisions, including launching a neonatal kitten nursery. Managing change of any scale can be overwhelming and scary. Especially when those changes depart from what an organization has done successfully for some time. This week, we hear from Kelly Furnas, the COO of Operation Kindness, about their lifesaving transformation. Ed Jamison is an animal welfare pioneer. Using data to convince sceptics, he has helped governments in Ohio and Texas transform their animal control programs into animal welfare programs. Ed's initiative City Dogs rebranded bully breeds to convince locals that pit bulls are great pets to adopt. He built play yards at the Ohio city shelter, complete with pools, and filled social media with clips of pitties playing together. To further make the point that pitties are great pets, he started a jogging group for marathon trainers to run with shelter dogs ... and take them to dog-friendly bars and cafes. His work in Texas was similarly revolutionary, and his methods have been replicated all over the country, saving lives and improving life quality for dogs and humans alike. Ed recently joined Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter in Carrollton, Texas, as director. For the first time, his work is non-governmental. He speaks with host James Jacobson about how private support and funding have expanded his already big ideas. About Operation Kindness While the organization has evolved since 1976, they have always remained committed to giving every animal the care and kindness they deserve. Its mission is to care for homeless cats and dogs in a no-kill environment until each is adopted into responsible homes and to advocate humane values and behavior. Operation Kindness has a robust enrichment program to keep our dogs and cats entertained while at the shelter. They make use of egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, gallon jugs, unworn socks, and paper grocery bags! Donations can be dropped off at the shelter at 3201 Earhart Drive in Carrollton, TX. https://www.operationkindness.org/ About Ed Jamison Ed Jamison became CEO of Operation Kindness in March of 2021. Previously, Ed was Chief Animal Control Officer for the City of Cleveland. He then served as the Director of Dallas Animal Services (DAS), where he led a staff of more than 200 employees, rebuilt the volunteer base, and instituted new, progressive programming. Ed's policies and programs have been copied all over the country. He is currently the President of Texas Unites, Vice President of the National Animal Care & Control Association, and Board Member for the Association of Animal Welfare Advancement and Shelter Animals Count. Ed's love for animals means that he also has many pets at home, including a few foster fails. His pets include his dogs (Gurble and Esme), cats (Bertram, Deliah, Riley, Weston, Nestor, Merwin, Scrappy, and Kiwi), goldfish (Iragoo), cows (Cookie, Sprout, and Oliver), and miniature donkeys (Fern and Evie). How do you face fear? Fake it until you make it? Nicole Packin, owner of Miami Pet Concierge & The Packin Method, joins the show to share how she worked through her fears and self doubt in starting her business. Nicole ran her business for 15 years, then decided to set up in a brand new location, several states away. She gives us some insight into what it's like operating across state lines and why it's critical to stay fresh and up-to-date as a business. Nicole also shares how HOPE is the key to running a successful pet care business. Topics on this episode: * What does concierge mean? * Staying fresh in business * Starting a treadmill service * Overcoming fear * H.O.P.E. Main take away: Running a business takes faith in yourself and trial and error. About our guest: Nicole's career working with animals began in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from the University of Miami with a BS in Communication, Nicole moved to the West Coast to pursue a television career as a writer. While working for William Morris Endeavor (formerly known as William Morris Agency), Spelling Television, and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Nicole began volunteering for The Amanda Foundation, an animal welfare organization. Finding her work with dogs a life changer, Nicole moved back to Miami, Florida, intending to learn all she could about animal welfare in her hometown. Immediately, Nicole began working for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. She was involved in all aspects of the organization's operations and fundraising and helped lead the capital campaign for the organization's Soffer-Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach, Florida. In 2007, Miami Pet Concierge was developed and began out of both a labor of love and need. After years of working in and around the animal shelter system, Nicole learned that one of the number one reasons pets were being given up or returned was “time,” or lack thereof. With this knowledge, Nicole started a business to help pet owners become great pet parents. With just a little guidance, education, and support, Nicole has had the opportunity to work hand and paw with thousands of amazing domesticated animals and their families, caring for and teaching them how to cohabitate peacefully. Having moved to Dallas, Texas, to be closer to family, Nicole will begin her new "pet" project in August 2022 with The Packin Method. Dallas' ONLY mobile Canine Gym will work to better dogs' mental, emotional, and physical health by providing treadmill workouts, massage & bodywork, and dog walks. Combining her years of rehabilitative and animal behavior studies and understanding that dogs need both mental and physical stimulation to be well-balanced, Nicole created a service that would combine both in a temperature-controlled environment and bring the service to her clients. When not running Miami Pet Concierge and The Packin Method or in school, Nicole is an active volunteer at Canine Companion for Independence and Operation Kindness. She is married and is the proud momma to Slater (Russian Blue mix), Kevin & Jenny (Spinone Italiano's). Kelly Furnas of Operation Kindness shares her professional journey from Director of Volunteer Services to Chief Operating Officer in less than two years and the leadership mindset and actions that made this path possible. Founded in 1976, Operation Kindness is a pioneer in North Texas for providing assistance to animals in need of medical care, companionship, and a home. In addition to pet adoptions, they provide extensive medical care for animals, a foster program, a pet food pantry, a surrender prevention program, education to pet parents and volunteer opportunities. And, the pandemic has not slowed them down. They have engaged over 11,000 volunteers since the start and regularly have about 1,600-1,800 volunteers active. Kelly was initially hired as the director of Volunteer Services in October 2019. But she was quickly promoted to Director of Operations in January 2021, and then Chief Operating Officer in July 2021. It's been a whirlwind ride, but Kelly is well grounded in what it takes to succeed as a leader. In this episode, she shares how her organization has maintained close connections with volunteers during COVID through a smart communications strategy. She also shares advice for volunteer managers who want to advance their careers and offers practical tips on how to frame the volunteer work so it gets noticed and how to effectively ask for resources and support. You know that person at work who has a new idea every five minutes? Who says at least once a meeting, “I was thinking about it, and why don't we…?” That's Ed Jamison. But he's not some tech entrepreneur – he's an expert in animal welfare with decades of government experience, and now the Director of Operation Kindness in Carrollton, Texas. Ed joins us today to explain how he has used data to help governments revamp their animal control programs into animal welfare programs. He's got a huge catalog of dog stories dating back decades to his days as a newbie Animal Warden in Ohio, where he convinced his bemused supervisors to try new methods to old problems by staying on budget. Or his time as Chief Animal Control Officer in Cleveland, where he rebranded both the agency (to Animal Welfare and Control) and the negative reputation of the city's rescue pittie population to the very cool City Dogs. Whether taking dogs out for jogs to leverage their need for exercise into positive marketing for pittbulls, showing up at any dog-friendly business with super awesome rescues, lowering euthanasia rates in Dallas (where he served as Director of Dallas Animal Services), starting a pet food bank for people in need, to literally saving lives – dog AND human – by reducing loose dogs on the street, Ed has been searching for leverage in animal welfare. Stepping into the directorship of Operation Kindness makes Ed's work, for the first time, non-governmental. Now that he has private support and funding for his big ideas, he's able to help the already-pioneering 501c3 to help even more people. As the pandemic rages, he's got the animals in mind – because as he points out, behind every animal in need, there is a human in need, too. About Ed Jamison Ed Jamison became CEO of Operation Kindness in March of 2021. Previously, Ed was Chief Animal Control Officer for the City of Cleveland. He then served as the Director of Dallas Animal Services (DAS), where he led a staff of more than 200 employees, rebuilt the volunteer base, and instituted new, progressive programming. The “Dallas 90” campaign was designed to help create a community where all people and animals are safe, treated with respect, and have access to the resources needed to thrive. His pets include his dogs (Gurble and Esme), cats (Bertram, Deliah, Riley, Weston, Nestor, Merwin, Scrappy, and Kiwi), goldfish (Iragoo), cows (Cookie, Sprout, and Oliver), and miniature donkeys (Fern and Evie). https://www.operationkindness.org/ https://twitter.com/opkindness https://www.instagram.com/operationkindness/ https://www.facebook.com/OperationKindness/ https://www.youtube.com/user/OpKindness https://www.linkedin.com/company/operation-kindness https://www.tiktok.com/@operationkindness About The Long Leash Thank you for joining us. https://network.bestfriends.org/tools-and-information/best-friends-podcast/best-friends-podcast-ep-61 (Check out part one of our interview with Ed Jamison here). In 2017, Ed Jamison left his position as Chief Animal Control Officer in Cleveland, Ohio, to take on the director position at Dallas Animal Services (DAS) in Texas. With an annual intake of more than 32,000 animals that year, he accepted what many would call a formidable challenge laid out by city officials to create a safer community for people and pets. In 2018, they launched the Dallas90 campaign, a rallying cry to the community to step up and support the effort to save every healthy or treatable pet at the shelter. It was an ambitious goal, but DAS attained a 90% save rate for the 2020 fiscal year. In this second part of our discussion Ed, we talk about the status of the DEI efforts, his new role with the nonprofit Operation Kindness, supporting, and the role he thinks rescue organizations can play to support municipal shelters, whether they be in the biggest cities, or the smallest towns in rural areas of the country.

To say that running the largest no-kill animal shelter in North Texas is a massive undertaking…well, that hardly does it justice. My guest on the show today, Jim Hanophy, is the CEO of Operation Kindness, which has saved the lives of nearly 100,000 homeless animals since its founding in 1976. It's amazing how even a non-profit organization, in order to be successful, needs to consider the “customer experience” aspect of what it does. It's also incredible how much what they have to accomplish on a daily basis mirrors that of a for-profit corporation, from having efficient systems in place to marketing and hitting certain daily metrics of people coming through their doors. All of this keeps the wheels turning for this organization and it's incredible to learn about and see firsthand. Jump in to see the full episode and hear about some of the amazing success stories they've had recently. Ep61 of The Jason Croft Show

Take Me Home - Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Susan Daffron talks to Sherwin Daryani from Operation Kindness in Texas about a dog named Latte. Operation Kindness was founded in 1976 and is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas. Latte came to Operation Kindness after his owners abandoned him. He was left alone when the house he was living in was foreclosed upon. A kindly soul found him and took him to the shelter. Latte is a medium sized Labrador retriever mix with a brindle coat who weighs in at about 40 pounds. As you can see in the photo he has big brown eyes and a happy smile. His prior home was in a rural area and he seems to get along with pretty much anybody. He loves hanging out with other dogs and would make a great companion for a family that already has a dog. This easygoing guy loves meeting new people and greets them with enthusiastic "kisses." Because he doesn't have striking markings or a flashy coat color, Latte has been somewhat overlooked at the shelter. But as soon as people take him out of his kennel, they find out what a wonderful loving personality he has, even after being abandoned. He will make a wonderful family pet for someone who takes the time to see what a nice dog he really is.
