Imagine accidentally being put off from a career in engineering by your brilliant grandfather who, without realising, made a career in the sector sound unreachable. Hepzi Rattray is a structural engineer with the global engineering company Ramboll, but for many years, she attempted to avoid following this career trajectory. In this penultimate podcast of 2024, we follow Hepzi's journey from school, where she turned down the offer of a top private school to attend Lady Margaret's, a church-state school in Parsons Green, West London. Some unexpected AS results forced something of a rethink and pointed her towards a somewhat unique engineering degree at Glasgow University.Even as Hepzi progressed through the course, she was still uncertain if this was the career for her. Her mind finally made up when she undertook a placement at Ramboll, and everything finally dropped into place. In this conversation, you will hear Hepzi's passion for her work, the strong relationship between engineering and her other passion, music, and why she is determined to use her position to inspire others into the profession. So pull up a chair, grab a drink and a mince pie (there must be one left), and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Structural Engineer Hepzi Rattray. https://www.ramboll.com/Thanks as always go to The Edge Foundation for their unwavering support that makes this podcast possible.
Send us a textMatt Smith, with 25 years of experience, discusses London's real estate market, highlighting key trends: high interest rates are pushing both locals and international buyers, particularly from Europe, to seek properties in places like Italy, Dubai, and Singapore. Demand for high-end properties has dropped, and many overseas investors are now renting out properties due to poor resale value. Smith predicts a market recovery starting in January 2025, with a 4% price increase by 2025, although prices will continue to decrease in the short term. In the few short months since its launch, Pupkip's chocolate-dipped frozen bananas have turned into a must-have, so much so that they've got a dedicated following. A single weekend had 14,000 people lining up outside Whole Foods just for a taste. Not content with just conquering the UK, Pupkip is already making a splash in Dubai too.The Tastehead team had the pleasure of working on the product development with Zara (with many an hour spent on Zoom calls with the factory in Ecuador) to perfect the trio of flavours that have become the hallmark of Pupkip's range. And it's paid off; Zara's relentless attention to detail and top-notch standards have not only made the bananas taste amazing but also earned them a coveted Great Taste Award in their first year on the market.Join Brandt and Micah as they discuss the brand's journey with Zara, exploring the nitty-gritty of developing the products and tackling a multitude of challenges that came up along the way. They'll dig into what it's like to introduce a frozen snacking product to a discerning UK market, unveil the complexities of imports from Ecuador, and the hoops that had to be jumped through to make it all happen. Nick and Angela are joined by Aussie comedian and BBQ King, Adam Hills, MBE. Adam Hills began performing comedy at 19, toured ten solo shows internationally and presented several TV shows in Australia before he made the move to the UK. In 2012, he was asked to front The Last Leg with Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe, a show created to run alongside the London Paralympics coverage on Channel 4. The programme was such a hit with viewers that it quickly became a permanent fixture. Adam is a real foodie and recently opened a restaurant with former Nobu head chef, Scott Hallsworth; Freak Scene is a ‘Pan-Asian punk' eatery in Parsons Green. Angela prepares some sticky pork ribs for our guest (which he adores) and a tasty spicy cabbage salad. As Adam has taken a break from the booze, Nick prepares an alcohol-free cocktail, a Cucumber Collins. Should you wish to pair this meal with a wine, Waitrose recommends Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett. In conversation, Adam shares why he can't say no to Russell Crowe, the challenges of presenting a live TV show from his garage in Sydney and his new kids book Murder at the Movies, which is out now. Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Today’s guest is Lotte Peplow, UK representative for the United States Brewers Association, the trade body for small and independent craft brewers in the States. After graduating from uni, Lotte got her start in PR, working at several different agencies and representing various breweries and beer brands over the years, before deciding to set up her own PR business, Peplow PR. Back in 2006, one of Lotte’s early beer clients passed her contact details on to the Brewers Association as they were looking for some help to start planning events in the UK. Lotte got involved, and reminisces fondly about the incredible beer and food pairing dinner she helped to arrange at the White Horse in Parsons’ Green all those years ago. Since then, her role with the BA has only grown, and she now represents the BA on a full-time basis. Lotte writes, speaks, plans events, liaises with importers, represents the BA at meetings across the UK and Europe, and more. She’s incredibly grateful for the opportunities the role has given her, from trips to the States for the Great American Beer Festival and Craft Brewers Conference, to a recent visit to The Hague. We talk about what her day-to-day role looks like, what her most memorable experiences in the role have been, and what learnings from the US beer scene she’d like to see here in the UK. Lotte is also a beer judge, Beer Sommelier, and recently qualified Certified Cicerone®. She tells me why she decided to pursue her certifications and about the credibility they’ve given her. We also talk about what she gets up to outside of beer and what she enjoys most about being a part of the beer industry. Here she is…
Today’s guest is music producer Andy Wright. The list of people Andy has worked with is truly illustrious, artists like Simply Red, Luciano Pavarotti, Eurythmics, Jeff Beck, Dave Stewart, Simple Minds, and Annie Lennox, to name a few…and me of course! Andy’s career started in the mid 80s when he chased up a job ad in The Melody Maker and started working for a keyboard hire company in London, delivering and setting up studio equipment for recording sessions. In the 1990s he set up his own recording studio and his career unfolded. We chat about his career journey - how he went from the keyboard hire company to where he is today – what he feels you need to succeed in the music industry and how it has changed over the last 30 years and how he has had to adapt. He shared some of his favourite memories with me along with the some of the challenges he has had to face. Andy, as you can imagine, is very much in demand so sadly we didn’t have a lot of time to catch up. We met At Le Pain Quotidian in Parsons Green, which is just around the corner from Andy’s current studio. Here’s our conversation…
