The unity we all long for is only available on the other side of division that allegiance to Jesus brings.
Earlier this week, Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe disrupted a ceremony for the King and Queen, speaking for nearly a minute about the King being a l-genocidalist, calling for land to be returned to First Nations communities and asking for a Treaty. In the days since, Thorpe has been accused of breaching the pledge of allegiance she took when she entered Parliament. Only Thorpe doesn't think so, because she's claiming a bit of wordplay meant she didn't actually make the pledge. Today, we celebrated as one, extended family dedicated four children and seven people were baptized. Which is why this week's conversation, lead by Dennis Allan, is more a sermonette focused on baptism as the Christian's pledge of allegiance. Baptism is a choice we make where we are naturalized into a new way of living and being, and where we pledge ultimate allegiance to King Jesus. When we're baptized we join into what the apostle Paul refers to as a “new humanity.” According to Paul, in this “new humanity” there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither male nor female, neither slave nor free. These groups of people who had intentionally been separated from one another were now being joined together through Jesus. In baptism everything we are is subordinated to Jesus. Our identity. Our mission. Our way of living and being. Our financial resources. Our loves. Our affections. Our desires. Everything is now submitted to Jesus, because He is our King, and we are His Kingdom people.

Civil religion as a gateway to Christian nationalismReligion News Service, By Beau Underwood and Brian Kaylor, on June 25, 2024https://religionnews.com/2024/06/25/civil-religion-as-a-gateway-to-christian-nationalism/The discussion begins by questioning the significance of Christianity in American life. Historically, politics and Christianity were intertwined, but the conversation aims to explore whether this remains true today or if it ever really was. Eli Slack introduces the concept of civil religion, which refers to the quasi-religious loyalty and rituals found in American political life.A pivotal moment highlighted is from 1954 when President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation to add "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. This change, inspired by Reverend George Dougherty's sermon, aimed to distinguish American Christian democracy from Soviet atheism. Dougherty controversially labeled atheists as "spiritual parasites," yet today, 21% of Americans claim no religious affiliation. This significant shift points to a growing divergence from traditional religious adherence in American society. The conversation delves into the notion of civil religion, emphasizing how government rituals and hierarchies mirror those of religion. Eli and Rob discuss the similarities between American politics and Christianity, particularly the authoritative structures and rules. They ponder the intertwining of these ideologies and question if the fundamental values of Christianity truly align with American ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.Rob reflects on America's founding, noting that many settlers fled religious persecution to practice their faith freely. The framers of the Constitution emphasized the separation of church and state to avoid the religious conflicts they escaped. Despite this, there remains a continuous push to redefine America through a religious lens, often ignoring the Constitution's intent.Kelly points out the evolving relationship between Christianity and non-religious Americans. The percentage of Americans unaffiliated with any religion has grown significantly, indicating a shift away from traditional religious influence. This change challenges the idea that Christianity is fundamental to American identity, as proposed by Dougherty in his sermon.Eli discusses the misuse of religious rhetoric by politicians to score political points, despite their understanding of the establishment clause. This manipulation often appeals to Christian constituents who view their faith as superior and exempt from constitutional restrictions. This approach fosters division rather than unity. The panel debates the role of religion in society, with Rob asserting that while religion has historically carved a place for itself, society can function ethically without it. He highlights the importance of compassion and genuine human connection over dogmatic adherence. The misuse of religious influence for political gain, as seen in Dougherty's sermon, perpetuates power imbalances and societal division.Kelly raises concerns about the rise of Christian nationalism and its impact on American politics. He notes that any movement to integrate religion into government is now tainted by nationalist extremism, making coherent religious advocacy difficult. This shift highlights the need for liberal Christians to ally with secularists to combat extremist ideologies. The discussion concludes with reflections on patriotism and loyalty to one's country. Eli emphasizes the importance of recontextualizing patriotism to focus on caring for fellow citizens rather than blind nationalism. The panel agrees that fostering compassion and understanding is crucial in bridging societal divides and countering extremist views.Ultimately, the conversation underscores the complex and evolving relationship between Christianity and American identity, highlighting the need for dialogue, compassion, and a commitment to the principles of the Constitution in navigating these challenges. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.28.1 featuring Jimmy Jr., Rob, Eli Slack and Kelley LaughlinBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Hour 2: Max Scherzer went on a podcast and explained his comments about needing to meet with the Mets front office. He also raved about Steve Cohen's vision and how the Mets organization treats its players. This season didn't go according to plan but Boomer and Jerry agree that Scherzer and Verlander praising the organization will be a positive for other free agents. C-Lo returns for an update and Boomer asks him to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to stick with the theme of “Long Live America”. The Yankees are back in action tonight. Did John Sterling make a little joke about Aaron Boone Wednesday night? The Yankees offense has been much worse than expected. They can't get a big hit or even just a sac fly when they need one. Catcher Erik Kratz, who caught Deivi Garcia in 2020, trashed the Yankees for their handling of Garcia. Boomer reminds us the one thing we'll never know is how a player acts behind the scenes. Jerry wonders if Johnny Manziel kind of gave up before he really got started in Cleveland in part because of where he was playing. CLo has clips from Max Scherzer detailing his conversation with Steve Cohen and Billy Eppler. Robert Saleh wants to keep the Jets grounded and the Giants are under the radar. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry wishes good luck to Massapequa Little League tonight and then plays a version of WFAN Immaculate Grid.
Hour 1: Jerry spilled coffee on his white sweatshirt but that can't ruin the vibes on a Feel Good Friday. The Giants first preseason game is tonight and Boomer thinks they can have a top 10 offense. Boomer thinks the Eagles will take a step back. C-Lo is back and looking like a proud American on this fine Friday. The Mets host the Braves this weekend so good luck to them with that. The Yankees visit the Marlins and Jerry says any pitcher the Yankees throw out right now is a better option than Luis Severino. Garrett Wilson returned to practice for the Jets. Robert Saleh said the Jets might move AVT to left tackle if they have to and Boomer found it noteworthy that, when naming a bunch of linemen, Saleh did not mention Mekhi Becton. The 49ers had Philip Rivers ready to go as a contingency if they made the Super Bowl and needed a QB. Joey Bosa cracked the code to gaining weight: just eat more. The continuing battle between golfers who left the PGA Tour for LIV and those who stayed. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry gives credit to Big Zoo for his dedication to living a healthier lifestyle. Zoo thanks Boomer and Gio for challenging him and inspiring him to start this journey. Jerry thought what Zoo said on the Postgame Podcast yesterday was inspirational. Boomer says all of the Yankees fans who complain about Cashman and Boone really just want a new owner. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry wishes good luck to Massapequa Little League tonight and then plays a version of WFAN Immaculate Grid. Hour 3: Boomer talks about the wildfires in Maui and knows that the wonderful people out there will rebuild a beautiful island. The guys then discuss the story with Iowa and Iowa State players allegedly betting on games they played in. What should their punishment be? This leads to more discussion of Phil Mickelson denying betting on the Ryder Cup. C-Lo returns for an update but first, Boomer reminds us that online sportsbooks can track who is betting on what so it's hard for anyone who shouldn't be gambling to get away with it. Players asking other players to join them is not tampering. Should teams in states with high taxes be allowed to have a higher salary cap? Level the playing field somehow. Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson are having fun at camp. In the final segment of the hour, CLo debuts “Is he a Jet, Giant, Senator or Fictional Sports Movie Character?” Hour 4: Jerry ticked off some Mets fans yesterday when he suggested that Pete Alonso might not be a long-term fit. Boomer tries to figure out what a fair contract for Alonso will look like. Jerry says if the Mets want him then they should get a deal done before Pete hits free agency at the end of next season. What do the Yankees need to do in these next six games against the Marlins and Braves? C-Lo returns for his final update of the week but first, Jerry looks for Mets tickets on the secondary market. He will have plenty of options to sit in great seats on the cheap. Bill Belichick's press conferences where he says nothing are back. Mike Tyson gets some songs confused. Jets tackle Billy Turner had an interesting way to describe the difference between playing left tackle and right. In the final segment of the week, Jerry reveals the secret to Boomer working until he's 100. Boomer wants to take everyone on a python hunt.
What's up with the Methodist Church ordaining gay pastors? Can a Christian recite the Pledge of Allegiance—and what does the Bible say about church membership?
