I wanted to talk to Paul Rush, founder of Substantial, a digital product studio, because he has an important point of view on selling without being in hardcore selling. Like you, Paul does not come from a hardcore sales background. Although his background is computer science and your background is in post-sales, customer-facing roles, you both are selling everyday without being in sales. Whereas Paul is selling his company services to prospects, you are selling product features, service offerings, and especially selling renewals to your software. And yet we don't think of our selves as in sales.  Please, if you learn one thing from this podcast learn this: You are in sales no matter what your job title is. And it's not that scary. Selling does not have to be about convincing people to buy from you. It is more about creating an environment that draws people to you and want to buy from you. There is science out there that indicates people buy from people they like. So all you have to do is increase the frequency at which you engage with customers. Be engaging. Be helpful. Be likable. If you do that, your customers will trust you more, and they will likely buy from you again. You will start making warm introductions between your customers and account executives at renewal time and (dare I say) you might help make these renewals with up sells. I can't wait for you to listen to this episode.  Learn more about Paul: His Company, Substantial: http://substantial.com Medium Blog: https://medium.com/substantial/tagged/blog Paul is not on social media. Michelle Tillis Lederman is the CEO of Executive Essentials and bestselling author of The 11 Laws of Likability: Relationship Networking. Because People Do Business with People They Like and the new book The Connector’s Advantage: 7 Mindsets to Grow Your Influence and Impact. She has worked with clients ranging from government to academia to non-profit to Fortune 500 companies, including Madison Square Garden, Citi, Johnson & Johnson, Ernst & Young, Michigan State University, Sony, and The Department of Environmental Protection. She has been featured on CBS and MSNBC, and in the NY Times, Forbes and Working Mother magazine.   Podcast Highlights   Who is Michelle Tillis Lederman? Michelle describes herself as a petite powerhouse. She grew up as a have-not, not that she was poor but her family knew what it was it like to struggle on the lower end of the financial spectrum. All she dreamed about as a child was financial security which directly influenced her choices later in life.   Michelle originally started out as an accountant because she was good with numbers and thought that would fulfill her desire for financial security. It didn’t work out very well so she explored other similar positions looking for the right fit and purpose. After finding herself as the only woman on a global venture capital team, she realized that communication in that industry was terrible. She began to explore the idea of effective communication and one of the first trainings she ever taught was how to give effective feedback.   You need to recognize in yourself what you really want to do and believe that you can do it. You have to own it and then go make it happen. Michelle wasn’t necessarily seeking her current career but she was open to learning more. Be open to those moments wherever you are.   You have to design your ideal. If you’re questioning whether or not someone will pay you for something you are considering offering, ask yourself why they need it and how can you tie it to their bottom line. Providing Effective Feedback   You cannot make anybody like you. Once you accept that, you can enable them to see what is likable about you. It’s not about who you are in isolation, but who you are in relation to who you are trying to connect with. When you have information to give to somebody that they might not take well, you should start the conversation with “Are you open to…” By saying yes, they put themselves into a position to open themselves up for the information that’s coming, even if the feedback is negative. Connecting, Influence, and Mindset There is an advantage to being a better connector, it makes things faster, easier, better. If you’re trying to grow your business, you’re going to do it better if you’re a connector. That means connecting with other people and helping other connect as well. There are seven mindsets of a connector: open and accepting, they have a clear vision, believe in abundance, they trust, they are social and curious, they are conscientious, and they have a generous spirit. The mindset of abundance may be one of the most difficult of mindsets. Reputational and competitive risk is always something to overcome because they come from a mindset of scarcity, which is very common for most people in society. Having a clear vision is another common challenge for many people. How can you make something faster, easier, or better without knowing what that looks like? When you ask for something, you don’t want the possibility of someone saying no putting the relationship at risk. You have to trust that what you give will eventually come back and that the spirit of generosity is in the other person. Connectors follow up and follow through, so they don’

Summary “People do business with people they like.” Simple truth. And a double-edged sword. Here are two helpful corollary quotes. “People like people who are like themselves.” Tie that to the first quote, and you see that people see themselves belonging to defined affinity groups, and gravitate toward other members of those groups. Now for the third quote, “We are all like each other in many important ways.” All. Of. Us. Give me less than ten minutes, and we’ll unpack this in a way that will be useful to you. (And, yes, I am quoting myself in this podcast.) Take these three observations, and you have a roadmap for success. Let’s look at each of the three steps: “People do business with people they like.” Be likable because it is true that people do business with people they like. By “business” I mean any kind of transaction, not just cash in exchange for a product or services. Any human transaction or exchange. “People like people who are like themselves.” This is the first clue to how to be likeable--assuming that you already know that being rude or antagonistic are both “being likable” knockouts. So, you might ask, what if it is not obvious that we are alike? Answer, we are all more alike than we are different. Yes, all of us. Take a look at the above drawing; there are two messages here: 1. We have more in common with each other than we have differences and 2. By working together, by using each other’s strengths to makeup for our weaknesses, the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.   “We are all like each other in many important ways.” Look for the common ground with the other person(s), the areas that we are alike. We all share our humanity, and on top of that we all share a gold mine of similarities; shared geography, what we like, what we don’t like, pets and hobbies, ambitions, fears--the list is literally endless. The key to uncovering these similarities, these connections, because that’s what they are, is to ask open ended questions. And keep asking. People do love to talk about themselves. There is a second key here (but Will, I thought you said there was one key), is to actually care about the other person as you are asking questions and looking to discover connections. This podcast is not an exercise in manipulation, this is an exercise in connecting. This “second” key is fundamental to everything in life. The first key that I spoke about is specific to what we are talking about today. Learn these skills, practice them often, and use them to your advantage, and to benefit all those around you. These are tools; use them well. But, Will, what if I don’t like that other person, what do I do then? Let’s look at a Lincoln quote, “I don’t like that man. I must  get to know him better.” -Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States. Stunning. For many of us, if we don’t like someone the impulse is to avoid them whenever possible, and, perhaps, to criticize them we are not around them. The last thing we want to do is connect with them. Not Abe; he seemed to understand that if he got to know the other person better, that he could find things to like--perhaps even admire. Seems like he had his own version of these three steps. Earlier we talked about how this podcast is not an exercise in manipulation. But the powerful skills we are talking about here, like all tools, are in and of themselves value-neutral.

Stop caring if people like you; it does not matter. In sales, you could be the most charismatic, friendly rep, but if your product does not deliver value then you won’t make the sale, period. Trust is what’s most critical, and that doesn’t always correlate to being liked. In this episode, Keenan, CEO of A Sales Guy and Author of Not Taught: What It Takes to be Successful in the 21st Century That Nobody’s Teaching You, breaks down the truth about needing to be liked in sales in the “I Like My Salesperson” Matrix.
