One of the most common topics discussed in my office is social anxiety. Really great people say that there's nothing more painful than going to a party where they know few people or, worse still, no one.How about giving a toast at a wedding? Or, trying to engage in small talk that might lead to bigger talk? Or, how to handle awkward social interactions? If there's one person on the planet who knows how to handle all of these, it would have to be my new friend, the mingling maven, Susan RoAne (https://www.susanroane.com/)! Susan is the author of the now-classic book, How to Work a Room: The Ultimate Guide to Making Lasting Connections—In Person and Online. I loved the book as have major thought leaders like Dan Pink and many others. So, as it says on Susan's website, "If you have ever walked into a room full of strangers and felt uncomfortable..." listen in. Susan is here to help!

Today, I interview Susan RoAne who faced challenges early in childhood marked by her brother's battle with polio, which demanded much of her family's attention and resources. This experience, while difficult, taught her the importance of communication and advocacy, as she often found herself speaking up on her brother's behalf. Susan also shared how she was thrust into social situations from a young age, which laid the groundwork for her future expertise in mingling and networking. Her journey to becoming the Mingling Maven was not without its struggles as she had to navigate the complexities of social interactions as the older sister of a sibling with a disability, which often meant fending for herself and learning to be heard. Today, Susan uses her experiences and insights to help others overcome their social anxieties and challenges. She has authored several books, including "How to Work a Room," which provides practical advice on socializing and networking. Susan emphasizes the importance of being oneself, engaging in genuine conversation, and including everyone in social interactions. Her approach to networking is about making connections that are both meaningful and beneficial, rather than being purely transactional. Her strategies for overcoming social challenges and her dedication to helping others find their voice and confidence in any room have made her a respected figure in the field of communication and networking.__________________Susan RoAne is a keynote speaker, Mingling Maven, best-selling author, and business networking expert. Her most notable work is “How to Work a Room,” first published in 1988. The 25th Anniversary edition of this book, titled “How To Work a Room: The Ultimate Guide to Making Lasting Connections In Person and Online,” has sold over a million copies and achieved international acclaim.Susan's impact extends beyond her written work. As a keynote speaker, she has addressed Fortune 20–500 companies, conventions, and prestigious universities. Her insights connect the formalization of social networking rules to the women's movement. In 2015, she was recognized as one of the 25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch.Susan's legacy lies in her ability to empower individuals to navigate social interactions with confidence, fostering meaningful relationships that transcend business boundaries. Her impact continues to resonate, making her a trailblazer in the art of networking and communication.__________________Find Susan here:https://www.susanroane.com/https://www.threads.net/@susanroanehttps://x.com/susanroanehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/susanroane/https://www.facebook.com/SusanRoAneBiz/https://www.instagram.com/susanroane/Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. Welcome back to On the Schmooze. Thank you so much for joining me. Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Susan RoAne, this week you'll be hearing from me, your host. Every other week I'll be offering my take on some aspect of networking and relationship-building. These shorter podcast episodes will include practical networking tips and techniques you can put into practice right away. My hope is those insights from me, and my guests will help you achieve the leadership position you're seeking, build and sustain your professional network, and find the work/life balance that works best for you. This week, I'll be sharing my thoughts on the ABCs of business cards. Over the last few months, I've been working with an association to increase connections at their convention. In an age where information is found with one click, and we count “likes” as engagement, conventions hold the promise of meaningful in-person connection with like-minded colleagues. Only through thoughtful and strategic planning will this promise become a reality. Prior to my work with the association, I asked questions about their membership and the culture they had created at their convention over the last three decades. That's when I discovered that a lot of the front line staff attending this event would likely not have business cards. As I shared in episode 14, “Are Business Cards Dead?”, even in the age of smartphones and apps, business cards are a critical tool for networking. This episode's title is “The ABCs of Business Cards” because I believe you should Always. Bring. Cards. Remember those ABCs and you'll be ready to make connections. "If we listen, we always know what to say next." - Susan RoAne The Cheat Sheet: Your number one purpose at any event. Why drinks aren't really free at an open bar. How to remember people when you meet them. Why it's important to never burn bridges, Susan gives a personal lesson. #1 tactic to create your own luck. How to introduce yourself, even if you're shy. And so much more... Networking. It is one of the most coveted skills someone can possess; it can open doors where they were previously closed, it can create opportunities where there previously were none. One of the most informative experts on this topic is Susan RoAne. She's the author of How To Work A Room, now on its 4th edition and silver anniversary. She joins the Art of Charm podcast for our 308th episode to dish the details on the ins and outs of networking and connecting, even if you're shy. She's got advice, techniques and tips for everyone in any industry. More About This Show: Considered one of the leading experts in the field of networking, Susan RoAne has seen her share of the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to networking. And some of her favorite advice to give people is simple: you never know. You never know who someone is, who is in their network and what doors they are connected to - so always be nice to everyone. Because you never know. One of the reasons the topic of networking, and her book, have been so important and continue to be so important, is because everyone needs to network. The details may change from generation to generation, but the rules generally don't. If you want to be a good networker, always be nice to others and treat other people like you're a host. Why act like you're a host? Because hosts listen and make their guests feel welcome, and at home. That's what you should be doing when you network: make others feel comfortable in your presence. Stop worrying about, or even having an agenda when you go somewhere. Go there to have fun, be lively and connect with people...not to get someone or get something for yourself or your business. Susan says that is the essence of networking. In this episode, Susan gives us some nuts and bolts on how to prepare for an event, how to engage with people (even if you're shy) and how to really work a room. To prepare she says to go online and research the people who may be there. Find their LinkedIn profile and study it, as well as their Facebook page. Look for what you have in common with them outside of the business realm. Then when you meet them, work it into a conversation. Are you both recovering lawyers? Say so. Did you both go to the same college or grow up in the same part of the country? Say so. When it comes to engaging with people, Susan has three suggestions for starting a conversation: introduce yourself in under 10 seconds with a pleasantry, say something about the event and then give the benefit of what you do (not what you do precisely). Keep it short, sweet and to the point. To really work the room, even if you're a shy person, get there on time or within 15 minutes of the event starting. That way the room works YOU, not the other way around! As people arrive, you'll be able to mingle and mix on a more intimate basis. Susan and I really get into the finer details of networking in this episode! We talk about how to exit a conversation graciously (and it's not by saying you have to use the bathroom!), how to follow up and make yourself stand out in that follow up, and how to remember the people you meet. And here's plenty more where that came from! Susan was a terrific guest and I enjoyed having her on the show; be sure to get out your notepad or your Evernote and write her tips down so you can take action the next time you're at a networking event. Have you ever seen a master mingler work a room? Someone who is really good at diving into a roomful of strangers, making friends and having a blast at the same time? My guest on episode 43 of the Smart Business Revolution podcast is a true master mingler. (I worked for another.) 25 years ago, Susan RoAne broke ground with her book, How to Work a Room (referral link). At the time, people were just beginning to become savvy to the importance of socializing in a business context. Today, there are more "rooms" -- especially online -- but working a room is no less important. In fact, being able to mingle and socialize and develop relationships with people is more important than ever. Susan actually lives in Marin County, not too far from me. We met when our mutual friend Dorie Clark got the three of us together for dinner while Dorie was in from out of town. After we recorded this interview, I actually had the privilege of "going? mingling" with Susan - we went to a TEDx networking event together. That's right - I mingled with the Mingling Maven. (She's trademarked that term, but I can't find the "TM" thingy. You get the idea.) Anyways, all I can say is she's the real deal. She worked that room like ... like ... she had written the book on the subject. I felt like a guy with two left feet. In this interview, we discuss: how to master face-to-face savvy socializing today, in a social media world how to make friends and make connections when talking to strangers how to communicate with people where they are most active online. Enjoy!
