How does the AI gold rush look from the helm of a $40-billion software giant? Salesforce co-founder, chair, and CEO Marc Benioff joins Eric Newcomer and Tom Dotan for a tour of the next tech boom cycle. The conversation opens with Benioff's sweeping vision of “Agent Force 2.0,” where large language models paired with reasoning engines mint whole new classes of digital labor, and brands from Gucci to Disney are already swapping call-center scripts for autonomous agents. The episode closes on politics and philanthropy: Prop C, homelessness, the 2024 electoral tightrope, and how Benioff plans to work with any administration and still sleep at night.

Examples of Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff's philanthropy are nearly as omnipresent in San Francisco as views of his soaring Salesforce Tower. Benioff has given tens of millions to Bay Area public schools and hundreds of millions to children's hospitals. By throwing his money and force behind San Francisco's Prop C to raise taxes on big companies, including his own, to fund homeless services, he goaded other tech barons to step up. But at the same time, Salesforce paid no federal corporate taxes last year. Forum talks with the author of a new Wired article that grapples with the complexities of billionaire benevolence. And we want to hear from you. Are billionaires part of the solution or part of the problem?
On today's episode we look at two areas of this past election in San Francisco on the 5 November 2019. We examine bonds, regulations, and taxes on consumer products. Some people have called any restrictions on consumer products as "nanny policies." Others see them as a way to deter specific unhealthy behaviors for a short-term that can have long-term consequences, such as addiction. Bonds have been seen as quick fixes in order to build urgently needed, publicly-owned infrastructure, such as public hospitals or high speed rails. Ultimately, who do these bonds benefit in the long-term? Previous What’s Left? Episodes Does Voting Matter? What’s Left? The podcast is growing. So we decided to take it to the next level by hosting our first ever live event - in San Francisco - where we hosted Oakland's charismatic mayor Libby Schaaf. We were nervous that we'd screw up somehow and forget to hit the 'record' button, but thankfully the conversation is intact. Mayor Schaaf is a great, great interview - for longtime listeners - or first-time listeners - this episode is a great place to start on our podcast. We cover a lot of ground - including homelessness, the 2020 Presidential Race, Sports, and more. We spoke to Mayor Schaaf about her view of the 2020 race, and which candidate she's supporting. We speculate on which tech CEOs may be considering a 2020 run, and spend some time talking about both sides of Prop C (Mayor Schaaf weighs in on the Jack vs. Benioff debate). We talk extensively about the growing homeless problem in San Francisco, and what Oakland is doing to address the issue. We talk to Mayor Schaaf about the recent Oakland Teachers' strike and the numerous strikes that occurred around the country. What does the future hold in terms of country-wide strikes? How can the issue of underpaid teachers be solved? We ask the Mayor about this and more. Of course, we talk sports - the Warriors, the Raiders (cough) and the A's. What does the future of professional sports look like in Oakland, and what's the Mayor's view of each team? We get very candid takes from the Mayor on each of the teams. We try to convince Mayor Schaaf to share her favorite two Oakland restaurants, and we find some compromise. The event was hosted at The Battery in San Francisco. Special thanks to El Sur Restaurant, Erica Terry Derryck, Carissa Torres-Cruz, Tyler Hafer, Max Savage, Marianne Despres, Colleen Curlin, Stacy Horne, The Battery and others for supporting this episode.
So, the election happened. Diego comes on the show (via a telephone submerged in molasses, sorry listeners) to talk about the good news in the East Bay and disappointing news in SF (including how this was tied to the shocking failure of Mayor Breed and Scott Wiener to endorse Prop C). Some South Bay election updates, though expect more in future weeks for all the in-depth details...

A talk with formerly homeless Zak Franet about Prop. C by Mission Local
• San Francisco's Prop C puts spending on homelessness in the spotlight
California wants homelessness and transportation to get better, but isn't always willing to pay for it. That's why in San Francisco, we have our work cut out for us to pass local Prop C, which would tax businesses making over $50 million to provide a permanent funding source for supportive housing, mental health services and shelters. At the beginning of the program, Nick Kimura (Eviction Defense Collaborative/Yes on C) tells us about some of the unfunded programs Prop C could start back up, like the Moving On program, and Sam adds his take as an affordable housing developer. At 16:34, we talk to Adina Levin (Friends of Caltrain and a South Bay YIMBY) about No on 6, the fight to protect transportation funding against the Republicans' gas tax repeal measure. We go into what's at stake: important road repairs, Caltrain to downtown SF, longer BART trains, new AC Transit and Muni vehicles, bike/pedestrian improvements, and a regional means-based fare pilot. All these projects lose funding if Prop 6 passes, so find out what you can do! Lastly, at 27:27, YIMBY volunteer Scott Feeney introduces the nascent YIMBY Mobility, a caucus (or "club," we're not sure which) that recently mobilized for Janice Li/No on 6 on the west side and has a District 2 mobilization coming up. YIMBY endorsements for November 6th Share the YIMBY endorsements with your friends using VoterCircle!
