A 36-year-old mother from LaPorte, Indiana, Thessalonica Allen, has been sentenced to spend 63 years in a state correctional facility for the brutal slaying of her husband, Randy Allen.  LaPorte County Circuit Court Judge Thomas J. Alevizos delivered the severe sentence following a swift trial in which a jury found Allen guilty on multiple charges, including murder, abuse of a corpse, and altering the scene of a death.  The jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes in July before reaching their verdict. Judge Alevizos, [Al-uh-VEE-sohs] in his sentencing decision, emphasized the aggravating factors in the case, stating that they far outweighed any mitigating elements. These aggravating factors included evidence of premeditation both before and after the tragic event and a stark lack of remorse on Allen's part, as documented in court records.  Judge Alevizos underscored the significant psychological impact on Allen's two young children, who were forced to participate in the gruesome aftermath of their father's murder. He noted that Allen even went so far as to place blame on her youngest child.  The grim events unfolded on July 27, 2021, when Allen fatally shot her husband inside their family home while their children, under 16, were present. The children reported hearing a "loud bang" and discovering their mother lying on the floor, urging them not to call 911 and sending them back to their rooms.  Later that night, Allen woke her children and instructed them to assist in moving their father's lifeless body outside the house and into his car. However, the weight proved too much for them to handle. Subsequently, Allen resorted to even more macabre methods to dispose of the body.  According to the children's statements to detectives, Allen acquired cleaning supplies and an ax the following day, using it to dismember Randy Allen's corpse. She then enlisted the help of her children in placing the body parts into a tote bag. Despite their efforts, the body remained too heavy for them to move. Allen allegedly expressed her intention to drive to a location in South Bend, where she planned to set the body on fire.  The police became involved when a man, who had been in a previous relationship with Thessalonica Allen and was the father of one of the children, reported the gruesome situation. He claimed that Allen had called him, alleging that Randy Allen was abusing their child. Upon arriving at the apartment, the man discovered Randy Allen's lifeless body, prompting Thessalonica Allen to confess to the murder.  Despite being asked to assist in moving the body, the man declined and asked to be driven back home. During the drive, he claimed that Allen threw a gun out of the car window. Thessalonica Allen was later located by police in the parking lot of an Ace Hardware store in LaPorte, where she tearfully confessed to killing her husband. She claimed it was in self-defense after he allegedly choked her.  In a chilling revelation, Allen admitted to cutting off Randy's legs when she couldn't fit him into the tote bag. The children corroborated this account during police interviews. The argument leading to the murder allegedly stemmed from Randy Allen confronting Thessalonica about a website she had been using, though no specific details about the site were provided.  During the trial, Allen's defense attempted to mount a claim of self-defense, alleging that Randy Allen had lunged at her during the fight. Prosecutors countered by revealing that Thessalonica Allen had lied to obtain a protective order against her husband. Additionally, investigators found a handwritten note in the apartment outlining tasks related to getting rid of Randy Allen's body, further suggesting premeditation.  The note said:  1. Spray s— in face, hit him in right knee w/ hammer  2. Hit w/hammer/stab him  3. Roll body up in sheets & plastic bags Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hear about attending SMU, playing under Coach Hayden Fry and why he feels SMU was the right decision for him and where he is today. What he took from being under Coach Merrill Green who is a Texas HS Football Hall of Fame Coach and how he helped him get a head job. We hear stories from days at Ballinger HS and then the process of getting hired at Brownwood HS following a coaching legend in Gordon Wood. Coach then gets hired back at his alma mater of Abilene Cooper and how he turned that program around along with his feelings of getting them back to the state championship for the first time since his playing days in 1967.What the rich tradition is at Highland Park HS, what he felt after winning his first state championship in 2005 on an undefeated season. From there they have gone on to win three straight state titles from 2016-2018. How the game has changed in Coach Allen’s time in the game of football. Coach goes into detail about announcing his retirement in the spring of 2018 only to change his mind 21 days later. We end with Coach Allen’s answer to how much longer will he go?Links:Article and Video of Coach Allen’s 400th victory: https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/dfwvarsity/prep-football/article236987234.html2021 Highland Park HS Football Schedule: https://www.scotsillustrated.com/sport/football/boys/?tab=scheduleWATCH HPHS Football: https://www.scotsillustrated.com/broadcastsVideo Highlights of 2017 State Championship Game vs. Manvel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUCBq_8uU04Follow BTL on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beforethelightspodcast/Support BTL and become a member of the Patreon Group to hear 5 more minutes of EVERY show for just $5/month! https://www.patreon.com/beforethelights

Jessica Eye has had an amazing career and is considered the #1 Flyweight contender in the UFC. Jessica Eye was born in Akron, Ohio to Randy Allen and Colleen Joanne Eye. She joined the home with her half-sisters, Jennifer Carlisle-Brunner and Heather Carlisle-Hunter and brother, Randy Miles Eye. Her parents went through a divorce which separated the family when she was only 6 years old. Her mother and sisters were forced to move to the Washington D.C suburbs of Virginia. Eye attended elementary school in Virginia but returned to Ohio as her father earned full custody of her. She then grew up first in Cuyahoga Falls and finished her childhood in Rootstown Ohio; where she graduated high school and was a shining star athlete at Rootstown High. When Jessica was 16 years old, a drunk driver plowed into Eye and her father Randy while they were trying to start her stranded car on the roadside. She suffered a broken back, among other injuries, and was bed-ridden for three months. She credits this incident with creating her drive towards success in mixed martial arts. Eye discusses detailing the abuse she suffered as a teenager from her father. One particular abuse instance when Eye was 14, led to her father being arrested and charged with child endangerment and domestic abuse. Please visit: www.JohnBartoloShow.com Thank you for running in! The Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology (ARST) celebrated 20 years in 2012. The ARST Oral History Project was conceived to document the institutional history of the organization and the larger intellectual history of the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine. This interview, with Randy Harris, Professor at the University of Waterloo, features discussion of: *how cognitive structuring patterns shape how we argue, think, and believe *on being drawn into rhetoric of science through coincidence *why anything involving John Campbell tends toward the memorable *how Gaonkar got it all wrong, but why the Gaonkar affair was good for business *on rhetoric vs. communication of science, and why Thomas Kuhn was horrified about the "r" word *why doing good work under the rubric of rhetoric will bring the philosophers, historians, and sociologists around *how the relationships of theorists, rather than theories, create the perception of incommensurability *on science as a symbol system, and how rhetoric ought to be the fundamental discipline to investigate it *what rhetoric adds to studies of science and what science adds to rhetoric *on rhetoric of science, emergent technologies, cognitive styles, and orality *why picking up cognitive directions in rhetoric of science would be useful
