Ian Rapley's Green Star Japan: Esperanto and the International Language Question, 1880-1945 (U Hawaii Press, 2024) is a sociopolitical history of the “planned” language of Esperanto in the Japanese Empire. Esperanto was invented in the nineteenth century to address the problem of international communication. This was an issue of great and growing interest to various groups within the burgeoning Japanese Empire, and Rapley shows that Japanese Esperanto aficionados and advocates could be found working both with the League of Nations and the Soviet Union, and were active in cities and the countryside working through questions of language, identity, modernity, and communication through and around the medium of Esperanto. Green Star Japan is thus not just a (socio)linguistic history, it is a book about what it means to be modern and how people make sense of their place in a changing world. Carmen Rendell recorded a short back story ahead of her conversation with painter Sue Rapley, as their connection through Soulhub goes back to our Soulhub Journal No 3, and the web of unfolding felt worthy of good air time. It shows the magic of Soulhub and the beauty of serendipitous moments in not just Carmen and Sue's life but all those touched by her artwork, the journal and Soulhub. And these are just the ones we know about. Our entwining story, leads us up to the present day, as we create our Soulful Meadows Painting Retreat this May (17-18 May 2025). What's missing in the story is Sue's raison d'etre. What led her to paint? What does she experience as she goes through her process, and for someone who spend decades estranged from her passion, how did she find her way back to it. It's a surprise story that took her back to art college, more than 30 years ago, and a squiggly path of many industries before she re-found the paintbrush. A supportive husband Dave, and a mentor who arrives just as the student was ready, meant that Sue's love of the sea and desire to sit with her thoughts and creativity, finally found the space and canvas to be explored. It's finding how you can create something that has real meaning and that's actually really coming from your heart and from your soul, really. We hope you enjoy both spectrums, the introduction and then our podcast together. For more information on Sue and her work, please do check out her website and instagram. And to access the brochure for our Soulful Meadows Painting Retreat click here. Please do share with others who might enjoy Sue's story, or could be interested in our retreat this May.Thanks for reading Sole to Soul Inspiration by Soulhub! Ep 477 - Canada: The World is a Hard Place Guest:  John Rapley By Stuart McNish   In the diplomatic spat between India and Canada, a rising India shows Canada that money is power, says John Rapley, a political economist at the University of Cambridge. He goes on to say that Canada is finding the world a hard place, and points out that it comes as a shock to Canada, namely because of its sense of itself.   Canada has historically been dominant – one of the world's biggest economies, a founding member of the world's most powerful military alliance, and a rich country whose aid programs gave it considerable leverage over developing countries. But as Ottawa squares off with New Delhi over the recent alleged assassination of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil, Rapley says, “It is being left largely to fight its own battle.”   In other words, Canada has stranded itself diplomatically at a time when the U.S. and U.K. have been building the so-called “quad” with Australia, India and Japan, as a safeguard to rising tensions with China. It gets worse, Rapley says. “Not only does Canada now occupy a less significant geopolitical space, but the country is a notorious shirk, or as an ally, with a recently leaked Pentagon paper revealing that Canada's NATO partners no longer consider us as a serious member of the alliance.”   We invited John Rapley to join us for a Conversation That Matters about Canada's shrinking reputation internationally.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/   Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

Over the last three centuries, the West rose to dominate the planet. Then, around the start of the new millennium, history took a dramatic turn. Faced with economic stagnation and internal political division, the West has found itself in rapid decline compared to the global periphery it had previously colonized. This is not the first time we have seen such a rise and fall: the Roman Empire followed a similar arc, from dizzying power to disintegration. In Why Empires Fall: Rome, America, and the Future of the West (Yale UP, 2023) Historian Peter Heather and political economist John Rapley explore the uncanny parallels, and productive differences between ancient Rome and the modern West, moving beyond the tropes of invading barbarians and civilizational decay to unearth new lessons. From 399 to 1999, they argue, through the unfolding of parallel, underlying imperial life cycles, both empires sowed the seeds of their own destruction. Has the era of Western global domination indeed reached its end? Heather and Rapley contemplate what comes next. Charles Coutinho, PH. D., Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, received his doctorate from New York University. His area of specialization is 19th and 20th-century European, American diplomatic and political history. The New Zealand Bar Association is warning against misinformed anger at the judiciary following Thursday's Auckland shooting. The revelation that the 24-year-old shooter was serving five months' home detention following domestic violence charges has been met with questions and criticism. Bar Association Criminal Committee co-chair James Rapley KC says it's normal for offenders who commit domestic violence to serve home detention and the sentence felt appropriate at the time. "The judge started at three years imprisonment, he got a discount for pleading guilty and other factors brought it down to less than two years. And by law, the judge has to consider a sentence of home detention." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For more than one thousand years, the Roman Empire ruled over a vast territory that was  unprecedented in both scope and scale. When it finally did fall under pressure from barbarian invasions and internal political divisions (among many other factors), many historians argue that the Romans sowed the seeds of their own demise.  Is the same set of processes now happening in the West? The historian Peter Heather and the political economist John Rapley have come together to interrogate this question in their excellent new book, "Why Empires Fall: Rome, America, and the Future of the West." In their discussion with Departures host Robert Amsterdam, Heather and Rapley explain how the forms of antiquity and modernity may have changed dramatically between the fall the of the Roman empire and the current buckling of Western hegemony, but nevertheless, how so many parallels continue to bear truth. Chief among them has been the global pivot towards nationalist populism, with the movement of labor and capital to the periphery, there's been a traditionally destructive rush to preserve the status quo ante. What may be done about the current trends, as much as they resemble the fall of Rome, remain quite unclear.

In this episode, we discuss a topic that April wrote a 15 page paper about over her spring term: what is the human being fully alive, in light of God/the Divine? We explore what it means to be humans made in the image of God, what it means to bring the fullness of ourselves to God and one another and live authentically, and how the sharing of our stories and our diversity celebrated in community can lead to collective human flourishing and liberation (and April gushes a little about Jesus). We also discuss the specific gifts of neurodivergent and queer people that can contribute to human flourishing, and bring up the works of April's many conversation partners, which are listed below. One of the most popular parts of many runners' weeks is parkrun. The 5km event takes place up and down the country - and these days across the world - every weekend. At it's most basic level every local parkrun is based on the efforts of a core team of volunteers, who work as event and race directors to make sure thousands of people up and down the country are able to get their running fix at 9am every Saturday. But how do those teams work, what happens between 10.30am on Saturday when a parkrun finishes and 8.55am the following week when the next one is about to begin, and how can people become part of the magic that makes a parkun tick? Running Tales spoke to Alastair Rapley, the event director at the ever popular Northampton parkrun, and started off by asking him what an event director is...   ---------------------------------- If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward The music in this podcast is: "Fearless First" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
