Since the war in Ukraine began, the historian Timothy Snyder has made several trips to Ukraine, and it was there that he wrote parts of his newest book, “On Freedom.” The author of “Bloodlands” and “On Tyranny,” Snyder spoke in Ukrainian with soldiers, farmers, journalists, and politicians, including President Volodymyr Zelensky. He talks with David Remnick about the Ukrainian conviction that they can win the war, and the historical trends that support that conviction. But the thrust of Snyder's new book is to apply what he learned from them to larger principles that apply to our own country. In areas taken back from Russian control, Ukrainians would tell Snyder they were “de-occupied,” rather than liberated; “freedom,” he writes, “is not just an absence of evil but a presence of good.”“If you think that freedom is just negative,” Snyder told David Remnick, “if you think that freedom is just an absence of [evil] things, I think you then argue yourself into a position where given the absence, stuff is going to work out. … The market is going to deliver you freedom, or the founding fathers … something else is going to deliver you freedom. And that of course is wrong. It's an essentially authoritarian conviction. Because if anyone's going to deliver you freedom, it's going to be you, in some way.” Share your thoughts on The New Yorker Radio Hour. Bild: Einsatzgruppe mördar judar i Ivanhorod, Ukraina, 1942. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Adolf Hitler ruled Germany from 1933 until he committed suicide in 1945. Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. Between 1933 and 1945 these two brutal dictators oversaw the killing of 14 million noncombatants in the region comprised of the Baltic states, Belarus, Poland, and Ukraine. Timothy Snyder explains how and why the NAZI and Soviet regimes inflected such suffering in Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin.

John C. Rodrigue returns! John is a professor of history at Stonehill College in Massachusetts, where he has been since 2007. He was one of Colin's professors at LSU when they were both in Baton Rouge in the early 2000s. John's new book is Freedom's Crescent: The Civil War and the Destruction of Slavery in the Lower Mississippi Valley (Cambridge University Press). It's John's third book. Influenced by everything from Eugene Genovese to Timothy Snyder's book on Eastern Europe, Bloodlands, Freedom's Crescent looks at the process whereby the Union went from freeing (some) slaves via the Emancipation Proclamation to the eradication of slavery through the 13th Amendment. As John makes clear, it was a complicated and frustrating process. Building on work of Armstead Robinson, James Oakes, and Michael Vorenberg, John provides a detailed look at how Union commanders and politicians grappled with thorny military, political, and constitutional issues in the western theater of operations. Historians have written many books about slaves fleeing to Union lines and thus "emancipating themselves." But what happened when the Union army came to them, and how did this affect the North's ability to maintain the loyalty of former slaveholders? Colin and John also talk about the state of the history profession generally, wondering whether it makes sense for undergraduates to pursue a Ph.D. in history these days. Russia's mythmaking—about its place in the world and the role Ukraine plays in its history—has made the world a more dangerous place. Russian President Vladimir Putin is the chief storyteller—and his version of events has even warped American thinking about Ukraine. Why didn't the West react more forcefully in 2014, when Russia first violently took Ukrainian territory? Why is Ukraine's post-Soviet history so different from Russia's? And what can Ukrainians teach Americans about democracy? Timothy Snyder is an expert on Ukrainian history and began warning about the dangers Russia poses long before Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine last February. He is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and the author of several books, including Bloodlands, On Tyranny, and The Road to Unfreedom. In September, Snyder traveled to Ukraine and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. We discuss what's at stake in Ukraine, what a Ukrainian victory might look like, and why using the word “stalemate” to describe the war is misguided. Lorcan has had a long acting career both on and off the screen, he had a long run on The Bill and more recently the BBC series Bloodlands, There's a slight spoiler warning for season 2 episode 2 of Rome, but otherwise enjoy. Odesa, on Ukraine's Black Sea coast, is a fabled city of what historian Timothy Snyder calls the Bloodlands. Part of Odesa's legend was created by Jewish author Isaac Babel's story collection, Odessa Stories. Today the city is a prime objective for the current Russian invasion and while waiting for the assault to begin, FRDH host Michael Goldfarb, reads one of Babel's stories written nearly 100 years ago that looks at incomprehensible violence through a child's eyes. Think of the children's eyes you see in today's news photos as you listen.
Military Historians are People, Too! A Podcast with Brian & Bill
Today's guest is Alexander Watson. Alex is Professor of History at Goldsmiths, University of London, and is a renowned scholar of the First World War and modern Germany. He was educated at Oxford University and finished his Ph.D. there in 2005 under the direction of Niall Ferguson. Watson was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cambridge from 2008-2011 and then spent two years in Poland at Warsaw University as a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow. His first book, Enduring the Great War: Combat, Morale and Collapse in the German and British Armies, 1914-1918, was published with Cambridge in 2008 and won the Institute of Contemporary History and Wiener Library's Fraenkel Prize. That was just the beginning of his time in the spotlight. His second book, Ring of Steel: Germany and Austria-Hungary at War, was published by Allen Lane/Basic Books (2014) and went on to win the Wolfson History Prize, The Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History, The Society for Military History's Distinguished Book Award, and the British Army Military Book of the Year Award. His most recent book, The Fortress: The Siege of Przemysl and the Making of Europe's Bloodlands, was also published by Allen Lane/Basic Books (2019). That book was a finalist in all of the competitions mentioned above, and it secured Watson's second Distinguished Book Award from The Society for Military History. Alex is now working on a political and sensory history of the July 1932 election in Weimar Germany. Over half of the electorate chose radical, anti-system parties of the far left and far right, effectively voting Germany's first, fragile democracy out of existence. In this watershed election, the book explores the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and even touch to better understand this violent and emotional time when the Nazis became the political power in Germany and took a decisive step on the road to establishing the Third Reich. Watch Babylon Berlin on Netflix - you'll get a sense of it. Watson has published more than 17 additional articles and essays, and he appears on radio, television, and podcasts, and now he's slumming with us on Military Historians are People, Too!. It is no exaggeration to say that Alex is a star in the field of military history, and we are thrilled to have him on the show. Rec. 12/09/2021
