Robert Eggers' The Northman made a number of headlines when it came out earlier this year: for its dedication to realism and detail, on-screen violence, and the promise of a retelling of Hamlet, set in the Viking period, and influenced by Norse mythology. We explore whether it lived up to the hype, and whether it fares as well on the small screen as it would have in a theatre.

This week on Fabulous Film & Friends,  we're celebrating Halloween by following last episode's duel between Robert Eggers' The Northman and David Lowry's The Green Knight  by a looking at and comparing two low-budget genre creepfests from these two up-and-coming masters of modern cinema:  2015's The Witch starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, and three unsung masters of terror Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger and Lucas Dawson with 2017's A Ghost Story starring Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara and Will Oldham.  My guests this week are series regulars Dr. David Johnson and Roseanne Caputi and a hearty werewolf howl and welcome back to everybody's favorite religious prude Gordon Alex Roberstson . Once again, the synopses to both films are simple: In The Witch, a Puritan family cast out of their colony tries to make it on their own, feebly attempting to grow corn in the New England wilderness while haunted and vexed by a nearby witch.  A Ghost Story, conversely, tells the story of musician killed in a car accident who awakens from death as an old Halloween costume styled ghost in a long sheet with eye holes. As a ghost, the musician stays in his house in a time loop, watching and haunting his girlfriend or wife, it's never specified, and a host of other tenants or home dwellers from the past, the present and into the future.    Thank you for listening. . With Neil visiting London for the first time in a while, we took the opportunity to record an impromptu conversation with both of us in the same room. Thankfully the vibe and repartee still seem to have remained intact. We didn't have a specific theme in mind for the show so we ended up talking about recent viewings and let the conversation take us where it will. The two major films we discussed were Robert Eggers' The Northman and Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley - we had mixed feeling about both. More on the art-house side was Zero Fucks Given (Julie Lecoustre & Emmanuel Marre) and thanks to an avid lister Mark Hancock's suggestion, we get into our favourite Body Horror films. In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

Nicole Kidman has delivered decades of riveting work on stage and screen. The actor and producer takes Backstage behind the thoughts and emotions that have characterized her meteoric career, from losing herself in books as a child to understanding the sacrifices required of hardworking artists as an adult. Her advice to fellow creators is to stay in touch with “that young mind,” as she says. “Don't let that older experience of life take that away. That would be the thing that I carry. And I have no idea why! I still get the goosebumps, I get the adrenaline, I get the nervousness, I get the elation, I get the waiting for the call.... That is still such a huge part of who I am.” An Emmy, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, and Academy Award winner, Nicole first became a Hollywood mainstay with “Dead Calm” and “Days of Thunder” before starring in modern classics like “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Moulin Rouge!” and “The Hours.” Among the projects of her production company, Blossom Films, are TV hits “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing,” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” She'll next star in Robert Eggers' “The Northman,” and is now Oscar– and SAG Award–nominated for her work as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin's biopic “Being the Ricardos.” Read Backstage's cover story with her co-star, Javier Bardem, here: https://bit.ly/3IorvNX This episode is brought to you by Amazon Studios' “Being the Ricardos. --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. With director Abel Ferrara's Siberia now playing in select theaters and available On Demand, I recently landed an extended interview with Willem Dafoe to talk about his extensive career. Even though I had thirty minutes to talk with the fantastic actor, it would be impossible to cover even a fraction of his amazing resume. So going in I decided to use some of the time to talk about his film work, and the rest of the conversation about other subjects like why he never directed, or when he felt like he made it as an actor and could pay rent just from acting.4:07However, before going any further, the reason I got to speak with him was his new movie Siberia. If you haven't seen the trailer, I'd watch that first. As you can probably gleam from the footage, the movie is not easy to explain because Dafoe and Ferrara designed the film to make the audience think, and they leave many of the things that happen up to the viewer to decipher. What I'll say is if you want to check out something a bit more enigmatic that doesn't follow the typical narrative structure, check this film out because it's not like most movies and Dafoe delivers a great performance.4:07During the interview Dafoe talks about what it was like working on Heaven's Gate so early in his career, how he adopted a greyhound rescue, how the business has changed since he started in the industry, auditioning for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, why he loves Robert Eggers' work and what he's excited for people to see in The Northman, making Nightmare Alley with Guillermo del Toro, David Cronenberg's eXistenZ, and a lot more.
