The 2025 Bafta Awards ceremony is set to take place, and one Kiwi star is feeling hopeful following her recent nomination. Robyn Malcolm's After the Party has been nominated for Best International Series - and she's feeling pretty thrilled about it. This follows the show picking up a record haul of nine awards at the New Zealand Television Awards last year. Robyn Malcolm says she's 'blown away' by the impact of the series, and she's feeling excited no matter what happens. "We've got a chance, but it's not a big chance - so if, weirdly, we ended up getting up on stage, that would be mind-blowing. But if not, it's completely brilliant being here and being part of it." Reluctantly, I think saving Shortland Street was the right thing for now.  The news on Shorty today is that it's been saved, but it will go down to three episodes a week.  What's saved it is taxpayer money: $3 million from NZ On Air and then be eligible for a rebate from the Screen Production Grant which must be about $6 or $7 million.  Which means we're pumping in around about $10 million in taxpayer money to save a soap opera.  I'm reluctant about this because I generally don't think we should prop up failing businesses. If they can't make a buck it's because not enough people like the product,  in which case it should be allowed to die.  But... I think there's an exception this time.  Because it might just be possible that Shorty may be able to pay its own way again... maybe.  The reason I say that is because it's not that Shorty is unpopular, it actually has a lot of people watching.   The last figures that I can find are from last year, 79K people in their key demographic watched it on TV2, which doesn't sound that impressive, but then you add in the streaming numbers of TVNZ+: 455K a week.  And well, that is impressive.  By comparison, at the same time TVNZ News only earned 180K streams, even though the news has got two extra episodes a week, Shorty was beating it by 2.5 times.  The problem isn't that it's unpopular.  The problem is that TVNZ hasn't figured out how to actually make enough money from the people watching it on TVNZ+. It knows how to get money from TV2 ads, but it doesn't know how to properly monetise online yet.  So... Shorty street is only guaranteed for another year.   I dunno if that's enough time for TVNZ to figure out how to earn more money on the app, but I hope it does.  Because it would be a pity to lose a show that is still watched by that many kiwis, and that has trained some of our best acting talent: Temuera Morrison, KJ Apa, Thomasin McKenzie, Craig Parker, Martin Henderson, Robyn Malcolm.  And which is, frankly, is one of the few shows left actually reflecting us back to ourselves. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kiwi actress Robyn Malcolm is back to star in her latest, grittiest creative project 'After The Party'. The Shortland Street and Top of the Lake star felt inspired to create her own role out of frustration from the lack of 'real' characters played by middle aged women. She says she wanted to play a 'quintessentially Kiwi' character, a departure from the 'palatable' older women seen on screen in the past. "There was a political angle to it as well, we wanted a woman from New Zealand. No mistaking that- she's not Australian, she's not American, we're not doing a version of someone else." The List by Yomi Adegoke. Ola is a high profile journalist at a feminist magazine, who's about to marry the love of her life. Young, beautiful and successful, she and her fiancé Michael seem to have it all. That is, until one morning they both wake up to the same message. A crowdsourced collection of names has morphed into an anonymous account posting Me Too type allegations on social media, and usually Ola would be all over it, retweeting it and forwarding to everyone she knows - but Michael's name is on the list.  Far North by David White and Angus Gillies. In 2016, an unlikely mix of men got together and planned to import 500kg of meth into the Far North of New Zealand from a ship anchored offshore. This is the story of how they went about it and if you didn't know it was true you'd think it was fiction. The mistakes they made were epic, and the police work wasn't stellar either so the combination of the two is just hilarious. It's been made into a TV series which starts on TV3 on Monday night, starring Robyn Malcolm and Temuera Morrison. I've see the first episode and it's wonderful TV. This one is well worth a read just for the sheer incompetence of the team.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heather du Plessis-Allan: Ignore the tax letter by these 'wealthy' Kiwis

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2023 3:31

Let me give you a bunch of reasons why you can- and should- ignore this letter from 97 ‘wealthy' Kiwis asking the Government to tax them more. This is the letter that starts: “We write as people who are frustrated with how much tax we pay. We want to pay more”. They do not want to pay more themselves. What they actually want is other rich people to pay more tax. And you don't have to take my word for it, I'll quote the guy who founded Ecostore, Malcom Rands, who signed the letter. He was asked if he was offering to pay more tax if others weren't also required, and he said no.   He said: "Even someone who's as big-hearted as me would not feel good paying more tax when other people aren't.”  That's the real test, isn't it? Because if they wanted to pay more themselves, they would simply tax themselves like some wealthy people do, and then use that money for charity. For example, build a hospital for children like Mark Dunajtschik in Wellington.  This plea for more tax is not as benevolent as it looks, by the way. Not all of these signatories are as wealthy as you might think. Names like Philip Mills of Les Mills gyms, yep. Sir Ian Taylor, absolutely. But there are names on that list that are clearly not worth anywhere near the $50 million that would make them the kind of high net worth individuals that would've had IRD snooping around their tax for the last year. In fact, I was so surprised by the list of random names on the list, that I called the people who helped coordinate the list. And they admitted that there was no benchmark for how rich you had to be to sign this letter. It was opt in. You could simply decide that you felt rich and wanted to sign it. One of the people I raised with them, they said they thought was worth $5 million based on a Google search. That is a long way from $50 million. That's a house and a couple of investment properties in Auckland nowadays. That's pretty much the aspiration of most mums and dads. There's nothing special about that.  So let me ask you this- if extreme wealth is not the thing these signatories have in common, what is it really? Political leanings, maybe?  Philip Mills- one of Labour's biggest donors. Robyn Malcolm- long-time Green supporter. Rob Campbell- long-time union man. David Cunliffe, yes, David Cunliffe signed the letter- former Labour leader. I suspect this is really an attempt to help a particular political party get a potential tax plan over the line. Because if they really want to pay more tax, pay it in charity. Leave the rest of us who just want to own a home and a couple of investment properties alone. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Award-winning NZ acting queen Robyn Malcolm was NZ's sexiest woman 2007, though she grew up feeling anything but. Her teenage years were a storm of hormones resulting in extreme PMT and bulimia, then once in her 20's she discovered the secret to weight loss; smoking.  In her first in person podcast interview, Penny chats Robyn's path to her recent 57th birthday through quitting the cigs, anti depressants, wondrous HRT, and to her journey of finally letting it all go, acknowledging how lucky she has been and feeling good in her own leopard skin.  May contain dogs. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/pennyashton)

Has there ever been a more Kiwi screen character than Cheryl West? Or a more Kiwi actress than Robyn Malcolm?Robyn Malcolm is a gem. One of New Zealand's premier actresses, she is known all over the country as a very genuine, real, and down to earth personality...as well as being Cheryl West. This is less of a podcast and more of a conversation. We go all over the place - from the early Outrageous Fortune days to being lazy, to the perks of stopping to look at ants. If it sounds a bit random, then yeah, maybe it is. But it's really nice. This episode is a catch up between a couple of old acting mates. Where this is different, though, is it's about some of the bigger picture things in life - raising kids, being lazy, gratitude and literally regretting nothing. There's a good splattering of fun and laughter along the way, and an enlightening look back at Cheryl West. This is one not to be missed, especially for Outrageous Fortune fans!Brought to you by: Antonia Prebble & Roar CollectiveHost: Antonia PrebbleProduced by: Antonia Prebble & Roar Collective
