The 2025 Bafta Awards ceremony is set to take place, and one Kiwi star is feeling hopeful following her recent nomination. Robyn Malcolm's After the Party has been nominated for Best International Series - and she's feeling pretty thrilled about it. This follows the show picking up a record haul of nine awards at the New Zealand Television Awards last year. Robyn Malcolm says she's 'blown away' by the impact of the series, and she's feeling excited no matter what happens. "We've got a chance, but it's not a big chance - so if, weirdly, we ended up getting up on stage, that would be mind-blowing. But if not, it's completely brilliant being here and being part of it." This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Leslie Mendelson. Modeling her music after such '70s icons as Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Leslie Mendelson began making waves in 2009 with her debut Grammy-nominated album Swan Feathers, which was followed by two outstanding offerings, 2017's Love & Murder and 2020's If You Can't Say Anything Nice. Just last month Leslie released her fourth studio album — the focus of this interview — an outstanding collection of tracks entitled After The Party (Royal Potato Family). For this latest effort, she collaborates with not one, but three producers: the legendary Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt), the young, in-demand Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Sara Bareilles, Sara Watkins) and her longtime songwriting partner, three-time Grammy Award-winner, Steve McEwan. Recorded at Jackson Browne's studio Groove Masters in Santa Monica, CA, she was joined by an ace band featuring guitarists Waddy Wachtel and John Jorgenson, bassists Leland Sklar and Derrick Anderson, and drummers Jim Keltner and Abe Rounds. Throughout After The Party's ten tracks, Leslie crafts a distinctive folk-rock, pop-Americana flavor, evoking the sounds of Laurel Canyon, but with the downtown grit and sharp wit of Brooklyn, the city she has called home for over two decades now. There's a refreshing realness and effortless musicality that feels both nostalgic and new throughout After The Party. In this episode host Michael Shields and Leslie Mendelson talk about how Leslie's recent album's title was inspired by Andy Warhol's still life of the same name while recounting the compelling story how she came to working with famed producer Peter Asher on the album and recording in Jackson Browne's Groove Masters Studio. They discuss the remarkable band that backed Leslie for After The Party, the diverse and introspective themes found throughout the album, what life on the road is like for Leslie currently, and so much more. Tara Canton is the definition of talented.   Starting out in theatre, she was a triple threat taking up roles in the Sound of Music and Annie.   But before she even graduated at Wellington's Toi Whakaari, she landed the role in TVNZ'S 'After the Party', working alongside well-respected Kiwi actress, Robyn Malcom.  "I've always been interested in performing in arts,” Canton told Newstalk ZB's Wilhelmina Shrimpton.  "I have an older sister Allegra, and she did musical theater, and dancing ,and all that growing up. So I kind of followed suit just, just, because I looked up to her and stuff.”  She started her performing career with stage and musical theatre, and through Toi Whakaari was introduced to the world of screen acting.  “When I booked this role, it was my first every self-tape that I'd done,” she said.  “I had never done anything remotely like, professional in terms of screen work.”  When it comes to working with Robyn Malcom, Canton said that she was a like a sponge, soaking up the experience.  “She made it so easy to talk to her.”  “I was trying to remember as much as I could.”  After The Party features some darker themes and serious elements, one of which relates directly to Canton's character's father.  “I really wanted to do the character of Grace justice,” she told Shrimpton.  “Definitely a bit of a scary first role.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If at first you don’t succeed at this thing called writing…keep writing, and learning, and writing some more. Cassie Hamer, author of  After the Party, has put in the hard yards, earning her Masters in Creative Writing, and then unlearning most of what she’d been studying for years as she searched to find voice. And lucky for us, she found it with her debut novel. Cassie opens up about the fears, doubts and joys of success as a published author. We even get a sneak preview of the joys of lunching with her editor. In this episode, we cover a range of topics which can be summed – sort of – as follows: Publishers want to publish your book literary versus popular fiction the value of Higher degree Creative Writing courses what it’s like to meet your editor for lunch a writing place of your own finding and trusting your writing voice rejection is part of the writing life celebrate your wins what is your next book? writing is a personal journey   You can find out more about Cassie and her writing https://cassiehamer.com/ (here.) Read Full Transcript Mel Today have with me the beautiful Cassie Hamer. Hi Casey. Cassie Hi Mel. I love your podcast. You have such great warmth and enthusiasm and it really is lovely to be speaking with you. Mel I'm really excited everyone to introduce a new writer and the book, 'After The Party. Now I had no idea what to expect but when I read it, it was thirty two young children at a birthday party. Cassie I have three young children myself and they're 6, 8 and 10 and I have hosted quite a few parties here at my home on their behalf. I always find that kids parties are constantly teetering on the edge of total disaster because you have so many children they're so hyped up there are games of competition. There's far too much sugar causing total chaos. So I thought what what it a scenario into which to put an inciting incident. So as you say the party is a complete disaster the laser WAKES UP LIKE NOTHING'S READY TO GO. SHE'S ABOUT TO HAVE 33 children land on her doorstep which they do. And it continues to be disastrous. And she makes it through though she struggles through until the end and reads It's a relief that there will be kids and picked up and taken home. Well, all except one little girl who she discovers hiding in a dog kennel. And at first Lisa thinks well the mom's just running late. No problem. This is true and she gets a note and the note is from Ellie's mother and the note explains that in fact she's not coming back to pick up the child at all and that she's asking Lisa to take care of this child and then laces put into these massive conundrum what do I do. And the story takes off from there. Mel It's really interesting because when I set out to to research for this interview Cassie I wasn't quite sure where this novel was going to fit. And one of the reviews that I read is this reviewer thought it was going to be a romance and I thought oh we must have another book here but it's not it's far. I think it's far deeper than that. It's got a lot of elements in it. We can all relate to it. We all cringe away from from some of the things that happen in it. But basically this book has a lot more depth and resonance than then just a quick story doesn't it? Cassie I think I think it did. Well thank you very much for saying that but. I love books that have lice and chives and I think. Women in particular we are complex creatures. We are interested in a range of different things. One minute we can be talking about the dash in the next minute we're talking about the state of the planet and politics and we are not we cannot be pigeonholed. And my reading interests are pretty eclectic. They like to read across a range of genres. But I have to say my...

While indie-punk heroes The Menzingers were touring Europe this summer, Sarah was lucky enough to catch singer and guitarist Tom May for a fantastic chat about creativity, musical growth and stealing Madonna's tour bus (among other things). We recorded this conversation at Brakrock Ecofest in Belgium earlier this year. Tom’s an inspiring, interesting individual and a great podcast guest; we’re sure that you’ll enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed recording it. We managed to cover a lot of ground over just under an hour, plus we play new tunes from The Menzingers, Spanish Love Songs and Triple Sundae. We discussed the journey that brought The Menzingers from Alpha Kappa days up to their current After The Party incarnation, and how their current sound has developed. We covered some van-based hijinks and on-stage food poisoning. We even talked about some of Tom's personal high points with the band, and some of his interests outside of music.  You can listen here or on Soundcloud directly. You can also subscribe to the Shout Louder Podcast on all good podcatchers, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and heaps more... We played the following tunes: - The Menzingers – Toy Soldier - Spanish Love Songs - Joana, In Five Acts - Triple Sundae - Indecisive  Cover photo by The Shutter Happy Jose.

Andrew Feinstein has come full circle - a young ANC Parliamentarian in South Africa's first democratically elected Government, he resigned and left the country after discovering his colleagues had accepted $300 in bribes for the country's unnecessary R70bn Arms Procurement Deal. But even those numbers are paltry compared with the plundering which will happen if President Jacob Zuma gets the implement his proposed nuclear power build programme. In this fascinating interview in London with Biznews.com's Alec Hogg, Feinstein tells us his journey from politician to investigator and now a best-selling author whose latest book has been turned into a 90 minute documentary by Hollywood star Danny Glover. Feinstein is using this movie to warn South Africans that their country's sovereignty is at risk - and unless they get into the streets to stop the nuclear build, as with the Arms Deal, they will repent at leisure. The interview starts with Feinstein answering a question on how well his first book sold - After The Party, his expose' of the Arms Deal.
