A lively show today with our pal David who brings us up to date on Ukraine and Gaza, then it's off to the business of "propaganda"....... Enjoy! Recommendations: David Tangier: City of the Dream (Paperback) 'A dream concealed in stone...sky supersonic, orgone blue, warm wind...Such beauty, but more than that, it's like the dream is breaking through.' William Burroughs No city in the world has quite the exotic allure of Tangier. From the 17th century, it has been a place on the edge, beyond the normal disciplines of government, a city of refuge and excitements where sex is cheap, drugs are plentiful and where the outcasts of the world can breathe easily. The golden years of Tangier began after World War I and barely survived World War II. Among those who sought sanctuary in or inspiration from this legendary city were Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Paul and Jane Bowles, Ronnie Kray, the unhappy Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton, Tennessee Williams, Joe Orton, Cecil Beaton and Truman Capote. It is this 'last resort of the living dead, alive but not madly kicking' which Iain Finlayson explores in his witty, enthralling book. Eamonn Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity (Hardback) For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary LIMITLESS, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity. This isn't 'biohacking,' it's science: a well-founded strategic approach to extending lifespan while improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health, making each decade better than the one before. With Outlive's practical advice and roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before. Stuart Monsters, Inc. Lovable Sulley (John Goodman) and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are the top scare team at MONSTERS, INC., the scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. When a little girl named Boo wanders into their world, it's the monsters who are scared silly, and it's up to Sulley and Mike to keep her out of sight and get her back home.

This week, we discuss two British gangster films from the early 1970s. The first is Sitting Target (1972), directed by Douglas Hickox and starring Oliver Reed, Ian McShane and Jill St. John. It was based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Laurence Henderson and is about a man intent on escaping prison to kill his unfaithful wife. The second is Villain (1971), directed by Michael Tuchner and starring Richard Burton, Ian McShane, Nigel Davenport and Donald Sinden. It is based on James Barlow's 1968 novel The Burden of Proof and is reputed to be a thinly veiled portrait of Ronnie Kray.   Timestamps This podcast contains spoilers for the following films/TV shows: What we've been watching (00:01:10) – Hercules, Spartan, House of Games, Young Adult, Hostiles Sitting Target (00:26:30) Villain (01:01:45) Coin toss (01:27:40)   Links Instagram - @callitfriendopodcast @munnywales @andyjayritchie   Letterboxd – @andycifpod @fat-tits mcmahon   Justwatch.com – streaming and rental links - https://www.justwatch.com

In this episode, which is No. 3 in Danny´s fascinating series which looks at the history of the places on the London Monopoly board he reveals some surprising facts about Whitechapel Road and indeed Whitechapel itself. A street which houses the skeleton of the Elephant Man (John Merrick), also has a strong connection with Jack the Ripper, Ronnie Kray, The Salvation Army, and Banksy.  An interesting mix and that is only the tip of the iceberg of what Danny reveals about the road and the area which is immediately adjacent to it. Because Whitechapel has been shaped by waves of immigration from the 16th century onwards, its history is particularly rich and varied. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Whitechapel area is named after a church. The Jack the Ripper connection is not what you think. Altab Ali Park was named after a young British Bangladeshi man, who was murdered in a racist attack. Many of the religious buildings have changed hands multiple times with each sale resulting in a new faith group worshipping there. The oldest bagel bakery is just off the street and weirdly now sells bacon. The Liberty Bell was made on Whitechapel Road. BEST MOMENTS ‘The Jack the Ripper murders did not actually take place on Whitechapel Road. ´ ‘Nearby, Brick Lane is famous for its Bangladeshi curry houses.' ‘A semi will set you back at around £880,000 which in 1936 was £15.071.05p.' We start with the Monopoly Series, in which we explore how the game came to be, the real-life connection between the cheapest and most expensive properties, the history of each location, how proportionate the values were then and are today, what the hell a "community chest" is and whether free parking really does exist anywhere in London.  If you love history; or indeed if you hate history, this is the podcast for you…

We are pleased to bring to you the June 2021 guest speaker at the Whitechapel Society: Daniel Smith, the author of The Peer and the Gangster: A Very British Cover-up. In July 1964, the Sunday Mirror ran a front-page story headlined: PEER AND A GANGSTER: YARD ENQUIRY. While the article withheld the names of the subjects, the newspaper reported that the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police had ordered an investigation into an alleged homosexual relationship between ‘a household name’ from the House of Lords and a leading figure in the London underworld. Lord Boothby was the Conservative lord in question, and Ronnie Kray the infamous gangster. Yet within a couple of weeks the story had been killed off, vanishing as suddenly as it had appeared. Lord Boothby and the Krays carried on with business as usual. For the first time the full saga of the cover-up and its consequences can be revealed. Drawing upon recently released MI5 files, government papers, extensive interviews, and a wide array of contemporary reports and secondary sources, Daniel Smith pieces together how eminent figures from the political firmament, the Security Service, the Metropolitan Police, the legal profession and the media saw to it that the Sunday Mirror’s story was crushed almost as soon as it emerged. https://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/the-peer-and-the-gangster/9780750993296/ www.whitechapelsociety.com

NOIR FACTORY PODCAST CASE #19: The Kray Twins   “They were the best years of our lives. They called them the swinging sixties. The Beatles were rulers of pop music, Carnaby Street ruled the fashion world...and me and my brother ruled London. We were fucking untouchable.” -Ronnie Kray, from his autobiography   The East End of London during the sixties was a mixture of poor and artistic, of modern and bohemian, of classic and diversity that England had never seen before or since. It was like Bauhaus before Hitler. It was like Harlem in the 20's. It was like.... well, it wasn't like anything ever, and that's what made it special. Clubs and art galleries sprang up amid the squalor that was the East End, and with them came the rich and the beautiful. It was said, rather famously, that “London's West End has all the money and leisure and that the East End monopolizes most of the labor and nearly all of the dirt.” In the 60's it was time for the dirt in the East End to shine. The wealthy and the influential came to the East End to rub shoulders with the infamous, the dangerous, and the notorious. There was no neighborhood in all of England that encapsulated the 60's like the East End, and all through it lurked a dark and dangerous thread that lead to a pair of twin brothers looking to make London their own.
