While a relatively new term, ageism is a method of discrimination based on age - typically toward older people, though it can also be directed toward younger people as well. It's a way of enforcing harmful stereotypes - too old to be effective, interesting, too young to have sufficient knowledge or understanding. In this episode, Shantelle and Cristina discuss how ageism can be internalised and used to hinder yourself, without you necessarily even being aware of it. It's a quiet whisper telling you not to wear that, it's too late to try, do or be that. They get to the bottom of where they think it comes from and how to fight it within yourself, and the beauty that can come with successfully removing it from your thoughts. Cristina Carpio is an entrepreneur, media personality, and philanthropist with over two decades of experience across media, hospitality, and the luxury lifestyle sector. A former host of CTV Morning Live, she has led marketing for a luxury auto group, served as editor-in-chief of a global lifestyle publication, and helped launch acclaimed restaurants in Toronto, including a Michelin-starred venue in 2024. She has hosted a travel series on Amazon Prime and Roku, collaborating with top international hospitality brands. Cristina is a recognized voice at major Canadian events such as the RC Show and SIAL Canada. Temple and CFL Hall of Famer Henry Burris joined us on The Scoop this week to share memories from his career on North Broad Street as a record-setting quarterback out of Spiro, Oklahoma.   Burris, who recently returned to his alma mater back in May to serve as the Klein College of Media and Communication's commencement speaker at the Liacouras Center, also established himself as a television personality in Canada on CTV Morning Live and TSN and said he used his Temple education to feel comfortable being on camera as a host and analyst.   On the field, Burris passed for 7,495 yards and 49 touchdowns against some great competition in the Big East from 1993 to 1996 and earned his way into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent and saw stints with the Green Bay Packers, where he backed up Brett Favre and Doug Pederson. The relationship he forged with Pederson allowed him to land a spot on his Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach. This season, he'll be the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida A&M.    In the CFL, Burris became a three-time Grey Cup champion, a two-time Grey Cup MVP and a two-time recipient of the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award -- and it all started with a tryout that had Burris throwing to guys off the street wearing slacks and Stacy Adams dress shoes.   Burris shared that story and many more on this week's podcast, which also includes some football and basketball recruiting updates and information on how you can vote in the OwlScoop Summertime Madness food bracket championship between Richie's and Maxi's.

“Through our program, “Running on Native Lands Initiative” to bring land blessings and land acknowledgments to life at these events, at races, but also go beyond that and really bring communities together, bring awareness to Indigenous peoples, bring awareness to Indigenous stewardship, the lands, the history, the people connected to them, even if they were displaced or not there presently. But also just an access point to continue those conversations of what does justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, accessibility, affordability, and safety look like when we are trying to create these safe spaces, inclusive spaces within the running and outdoor industry.”Jordan Marie Whetstone is passionate about community and storytelling. The opportunity to tell Yatika Starr Fields's story at the Western States 100 and also work to bring the first land acknowledgment to the race is something Whetstone was excited to document. She and her husband created a beautiful film on a limited budget and found a great subject to follow in Yatika. This film is one of my favourites so far as it's absolutely stunning and the storytelling is fantastic. Jordan wants her work to have an impact on people and brands.“That's the whole purpose of why we wanted to create this series was to spark these conversations to get people uncomfortable, especially if it does make them uncomfortable and to sit with that and to ask them, what's making me feel uncomfortable? How can I sit with this and process, but take it in a proactive way and in a positive way to do better, to unlearn or relearn… …how can we be a good relative to each other, how can we grow our community together as a collective and how can we just be good humans?”Jordan is also the founder and organizer behind Rising Hearts. The “Know to Run” series continues with more great people featured that you can follow along with. They are looking for funding for episode 3. “We were kind of in the thick of her going to her first couple trips to Mexico. We were alongside her when she first went there and everything, so yeah, it was really interesting. I think it would have been pretty easy to lean into some cliches about loss and grieving and going to find out about people in your family, and I think I think we avoided those pretty well.” - Stephen KershRabbitwolf Creative's Ryan Sterner and Stephen Kersh were thrilled about the opportunity to work with Laura Cortez on a North Face film project. Laura pitched her FKT mission while seeking to learn more about her Mexican heritage after her father's passing. Ryan and Stephen did a scouting trip with Cortez and her husband before going back for the FKT attempt. They had to deal with the challenges of shooting in a foreign country and working at an elevation they never had in the past. Despite the challenges they enjoyed working with Laura and the opportunity to tell a small part of her story. Both filmmakers mentioned the human behind the attempt is always the most interesting part of the story, and where they place their focus.“We want to make a compelling film for people who aren't fans of the sport and I think that that means, it's like Stephen said, developing a character that you are interested in learning about whether or not they succeed or whether or not they fail. So that's always the goal with everything that we do.” - Ryan SternerChatting with these two and hearing more about their film was a lot of fun. 185. Avoid Retail Burnout with Guest Expert Dr. Ashley Margeson

Creative Shop Talk with Wendy Batten

With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast/   Show Notes: Retailers take note.  If you've ever experienced burnout in your home tasks or business, you know it's something that's best to manage in its early stages. In Episode 185 of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, Dr. Ashley Margeson joins me for a dynamic discussion about burnout, including what it is, and methods for prevention and recovery. If you are like many of my retailers and have said things like “I love what I do, but…” “I just need to hustle through this one event/season/month…” This conversation is for you.   What is burnout? Burnout has been studied since the 1970s. It is an interesting phenomenon that the WHO set as a true diagnosis only a few years ago, identifiable by three key symptoms: depressive-like feelings, apathy towards your work (whether it be at home, entrepreneurship, etc), and a loss of productivity/performance. Burnout is tough to recognize at its earliest stages because we keep justifying it with logic.   Dr. Ashley explains that burnout occurs when we overuse adrenaline as our main energy source. The longer we use adrenaline as energy, cortisol production is suppressed. Cortisol is your energy & stress response hormone that should rise in the morning and stay steady throughout the day. As entrepreneurs, our first instinct is often to just “do more,” which leads to living on adrenaline. Living on adrenaline leads to burnout.   Managing Burnout Like A Bank Account An easy way to think about managing burnout is to think of a bank account. Like a bank account withdrawal, our energy is depleted for things we spend it on. Similarly, an energy “deposit” can be made into our bank through things like eating healthy meals and adequate sleep.   4 Modes/Stages of Burnout: 1. Savings/Investing Mode: Early Stage Burnout: We have lots of deposits coming in so we are able to “spend” our energy/adrenaline. 2. Paycheck to Paycheck: In this mode, there is just enough energy coming in to deal with what's going out. 3. Overdraft: There is no longer enough energy coming in to cover what is going out. At this stage, you aren't quite apathetic, moreso irritated. You start putting things off. 4. The creditors are calling: In this stage, you are no longer getting out of bed. Once you get to this stage, you may need medical intervention and recovery can take months and months.   One of the things that Dr. Ashley points out early on in our conversation is that burnout can't necessarily be avoided. Rather, severe burnout should be managed/prevented so that recovery can be a walk outside vs. 18 months of rest. From a retail perspective, this could mean identifying what you can do in Q1 - Q3 that will limit the energy withdrawals you are making in Q4 that can lead to burnout.   Dr. Ashley explains that energy deposits can take the form of 30 second “glimmers” throughout your day, deposits that take 5-15 minutes, and deposits that take over 20 minutes. Oftentimes, we are so focused on the energy deposits that take more than 20 minutes (having dinner with a friend, for example) that we miss the smallest deposits (“glimmers” like a glass of water, a post-it note on the computer, etc). These are the sources that give us small, sustainable bumps in energy.    The “cornerstone” deposits are the ones we should be spending our energy on: sleep, fueling, self-awareness, and movement.   “No one ever gets to burnout because they failed. We burn out because we care about showing up and doing the right things.” - Dr. Ashley   Dr. Ashley's advice: 1. Determine what stage of burnout you are in.  2. Make a list of deposits that give you energy in each of the three timeframes listed above. 3. Of the cornerstone deposits, which matters most to you? Focus on that one.   About Dr. Ashley: Dr. Ashley Margeson is a Naturopathic Doctor who believes that your health should work for you, not against you.As the COO of Cornerstone Naturopathic, a Halifax, Nova Scotia-based clinic, she focuses on Burnout Recovery and Prevention, guiding individuals towards revitalization and well-being.   At the helm of her mission, Dr. Ashley is also the host of "The Superwoman Code," a dynamic podcast supporting busy women in optimizing their health, homes, and hormones to infuse life back into their lifestyles. He brings his passion for helping people succeed in their businesses to his interviews and advice straight to you. The Karmali Exchange with Faisal Karmali is a monthly web show and podcast, featuring successful entrepreneurs sharing their stories about how they achieved their goals, some of the challenges they have had along the way, and their advice that can help other business owners learn and grow their own companies. He describes his mission this way: "No entrepreneur does it by themselves. Every day, I speak to entrepreneurs about their businesses, and analyze and report on dozens of companies for thousands of people. I've noticed a pattern: what makes the basic building blocks of a successful business. "I also know that entrepreneurship is a difficult, and often lonely endeavour. The best way to find solutions for your business is to talk to other entrepreneurs for insight and unique perspectives. But it's hard to find those people to talk to when you are working so hard. "That's why I've decided to create a community to share advice, ideas and insights from experts, as well as the things I've learned from decades of studying successful businesses. Join us today to get the help you need to take your business to the next level." Entrepreneurs are the backbone of Canada's economy. “Advertising is a tax that brands pay for being unremarkable.” This is one of the many quotes that resonated with me while I chatted with Chris Kneeland, CEO & Co-Founder of Cult Collective during this episode of The Karmali Exchange. By combining a traditional ad agency with business consulting, Chris created a new species called a Marketing Engagement Agency. We talk about the changing dynamics between leadership and employees, the difference between being successful vs being significant and of course, social media and marketing. Years of experience working with industry giants Harley-Davidson, John Deere, Home Depot, Best Buy, Keurig (just to name a few) led to valuable insights and advice that will help every entrepreneur. Chris has a way of making you rethink your approach to your business through fun, relatable stories of the brands that you know and love. — Thanks for watching! This week we are joined by Angela Aiello for a terrific conversation on all things wine. ANGELA AIELLO Wine Expert, Journalist, Educator and On-Air Host Contact information: ask@superwinegirl.com Website: www.superwinegirl.com IG: @SuperWineGirl Who Is Angela Aiello Angela Aiello has been changing the world of wine for the past 20 years. Seeking to make wine endlessly fascinating, she goes by the moniker “Super Wine Girl” and is currently the TV host for the CTV Morning Live, CHCH Morning Live, Dine & Dash Radio and has spent the last decade hosting on-air wine segments for TV and radio. Angela has regular wine columns in Horizon magazine, WanderEater.com and ViewtheVibe.com. She also hosts “The Juice,” her very own wine show and is a freelance consultant and journalist. What has she done? At the age of 25, Angela Aiello founded one of the most engaging wine clubs for millennials in Canada. This was the start of her journey to democratize wine, which she has continued to do since 2006 (coincidentally it started at the beginning of the social media boom). Her wine club was based in Toronto, Canada and focused on educating wine enthusiasts. Angela has been curating hundreds of wine tasting events and also ran a wine institute for 10 years. She believes we are no now in a Wine Renaissance period - where wine is finally modernizing itself with the times. Angela has taught countless wine school classes and even hosted fun and celebrated classes like “how to Saber”. She has helped thousands of Canadians learn about wine in a non-pretentious, yet educational way both in person and also now virtually. She is a trailblazer, fearless entrepreneur and is dedicated to helping grow and change the global wine community. Before the pandemic, she owned two hip wine venues, one a ‘wine cave' on Queen Street West and a second private event space in a townhouse on King Street West. Her not for profit work includes: Angela currently has an on-going campaign that highlights #WinesThatGiveBack and she has also sat on the Board of Directors for Femmes du Vin, a not-for-profit organization that supports women in the wine trade. She was an integral part of the “Don't Poke the Bear” wine launch campaign in Canada, which won an ELSI award from the LCBO and in 2018, she became part of the PIWOSA Women in Wine community where she volunteered her time to work a harvest in Stellenbosch, South Africa. She also has shared her entrepreneurial story as part of the Fuckup Alumni community of speakers who share their business stories to support other entrepreneurs. Other Things about her: She can often be found sitting on industry panels, openly sharing lessons and learnings from her years of experience and sipping coffee with someone new in the industry helping them with connections and referrals. She will donate her time, knowledge and wine expertise to many of the not-for-profit community organizations in Toronto, to bridge wine with new and emerging cultures, events and audiences. She believes in bringing alternative voices into the world of wine and changing the industry to a more inclusive and diverse space. She is a creative writer working on her memoir and loves to interview chefs, sommeliers and celebrities including names like John Malkovich, Christine Cushing, Priyanka Chopra, DLynn Proctor, and Max Riedel just to name a few. She hosted Nelson Mandela's Daughter and granddaughter in her wine cave when their wines launched in Ontario, is a social media influencer, travel and culinary enthusiast and amatuer photographer. Angela grew up in Niagara, Canada and began her career at Vineland Estates WInery and Peller Estates winery, both 4 diamond restaurants. Matt Beauchamp is a married father of two and a former stay-at-home dad, turned full-time work-from-home dad. His day job is working as a Creative Content Manager for a PR company, but he's probably better known as Dashing Dad through his blog DashingDad.ca and his social media accounts. As Dashing Dad, Matt has written for Calgary Child, appeared on CTV Morning Live, come runner up for Best Blogger in the Best of Calgary Awards and is featured in “Top parenting blogs you should follow” lists across Canada. Matt has carved out a niche talking about the best things to do with your kids in and around Calgary and partnering with local businesses and attractions to host giveaways. In this episode: Jumping in and figuring things out as you go is a big part of parenting including the journey of being a stay-at-home dad. A creative outlet can be important as a parent and can also be a way to facilitate connections, growth, and new experiences! Reaching out to others can create a community of mutual support. If you ask, people are incredibly willing to help and to share their experiences and ideas. Connect with Matt: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dashingdad_yyc/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dashingdadyyc Website: https://dashingdad.ca On this episode of The Part-Time Jungle Podcast, I had a great conversation with Matt about his journey as a stay-at-home dad and his transition to working from home full-time. We also chatted about his blog, DashingDad, and strategies that have helped him work successfully from home. Matt shared how reaching out to others and asking questions has been instrumental in his journey and in him being part of a community of mutual support. It was so much fun to shift gears and change “the rules” to talk about the fatherhood/work juggle! Matt is incredibly nice and super easy to talk to. I appreciated how open and honest he was about the initial fears and uncertainty he experienced as a stay-at-home dad. THE BEGINNING Matt and his wife have two children; a daughter who's almost four and a son who's just over a year. His stay-at-home dad journey started right after his wife's maternity leave with their first child. At the time, it just made sense that Matt would be the one that stayed home as he was working as a freelance writer. His wife had a full-time job and was making more money. Matt was able to still continue doing some freelance work while his daughter napped or in the evenings or on weekends. It was important to him and his wife that one of them stayed home with their daughter. ENJOYING BEING A STAY-AT-HOME DAD Looking back on that time, although it didn't come without its challenges, it was the probably the most enjoyable time Matt has had as a parent so far. He got to watch his daughter learn new things and he got to experience showing her new things as well. This was pre-COVID, of course, so they were able to get out everyday and go to places like the Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park. They also went swimming and to local parks. Matt says that it's hard to complain about getting out and going to do fun things with your daughter every day. He and his daughter created an amazing bond through this. SOME INITIAL FEAR When Matt reflected back on being a stay-at-home dad, he remembered that at first he felt afraid. This was during the initial transition of his wife being there all the time to his wife going back to work. He was worried that he would do something wrong. He wondered if his daughter was going to get bored. Was he going to get bored? What was he going to do when XYZ happened? Of course, what he found, just like everything in parenting, is that you just jump in and figure it out as you go. It ended up being amazing! Matt says that it's funny now, looking back on that, how nervous he was to be a stay-at-home dad. HAVING A PLAN One of the main strategies that helped Matt with his juggle as a stay-at-home parent was having a plan of people to see and things to d...

I met Rory Gardiner on the set at CTV Morning Live and interviewed him about his country music career. It's impressive.  He has toured worldwide and recorded songs in Nashville, and even opened up for Keith Urban. His latest albums are geared for kids. He's also a comedian, performing at comedy clubs all over North America and chillin with canadian comics like Tom Green and Mike MacDonald. But the turning point for me asking Rory to come on the podcast was his experience as a TedX speaker talking about humor as a coping mechanism. For my listeners here in Ottawa, we remember last years 6 Tornados hitting down in one powerful storm, people here continue to rebuild their lives and their homes. Rory and his family were one of the families hardest hit, running to safety only to see their home destroyed. What followed was a series of funny videos that went viral as Rory used humour to explain and show the devastation. Ive seen the vidoes- they are hilairious. We talk about humour as a coping mechanism, why he isn't alone and how he has learned from the experience what's really important in life. http://www.rorygardiner.com/
