Daniel Gutierrez was once at the top of his game in the business world—an advisor to the Obama Administration, a big-time speaker, and a highly paid consultant to major organizations. But then he left it all behind to embark on a spiritual journey toward self-love. Now a mindfulness master (danielgutierrez.com) and bestselling author (Radical Mindfulness), he leads life-changing retreats to Peru, teaching Radical Mindfulness and the power of living and loving fully in the present. A Life-Changing Encounter with Wachuma In his search for enlightenment, Daniel took San Pedro (Wachuma), a plant medicine known for opening the heart and deepening wisdom. Unlike the intense night visions of Ayahuasca, Wachuma is taken during the day, bringing clarity and connection to nature. During the experience, he saw a powerful condor (a large bird of prey)—a sign to trust his inner wisdom and embrace his path as a teacher and healer. A Mother's Final Words of Freedom During his mother's dying moments, Daniel experienced the sacred energy of Palo Santo wood. He saw two lights and felt her presence. Her last words to him: “You were here when I needed you. I release you to the world.” With that blessing, he stepped fully into his mission of love and mindfulness. Radical Mindfulness: The Art of Being Fully Present Mindfulness rewires the brain—lowering fear, increasing memory and planning, and boosting compassion by 23%, while reducing aggression by 57%. Daniel's Six-Step Radical Mindfulness Framework helps people stay present: Focus on the present (breath, senses). Direct thoughts to the moment. Ask: Am I okay right now? Question fear: Is this real? Assess: Am I moving toward or away from my goal? Take action: Shift energy through movement. Plant Medicine: Nature's Teachers and Healers Daniel learned that Indigenous wisdom sees plants as living beings (Anima). If a plant loves you, it heals you. This is a sacred exchange—plants willingly offer their spirit when treated with gratitude and respect. Spiritual Wisdom From the Jungle Here are some of Daniel's Nuggets of Natural Higher Knowledge: Healing isn't the goal—love is. When you love, healing happens. Don't wait for the storm to pass—dance in the rain. The dangers of the jungle aren't there just to kill, but to protect (like in life, what you fear may be guarding something valuable). Unplug from technology to reconnect with yourself. Guilt and sadness come from burdening yourself with self-harming expectations—but Radical Mindfulness teaches acceptance and love. Finding Peace in Sacred Lands Daniel now runs the Catalina Retreat Center (catalinaretreatcenterperu.com), named after his beloved departed mother. He leads earnest seekers on transformational journeys to Peru, including spiritually evolved places such as Cusco and Machu Picchu in the Andes. A New Definition of Success Once a "big baller" in the business world, Daniel discovered that true success isn't about money or power. It's about stillness, presence, and love. On Love University, we invite you to embrace the powerful lesson inspired by Daniel's journey to peace and self-acceptance: Live more. Love more. Be more. When you do this, the world opens its arms to you, and your joy will be unending. Listen to the full episode with Daniel Gutierrez on Love University Podcast. He holds a Global Masters of Public Health from Imperial College London and was a Medical Affairs Manager for companies like Merck Pty, Abbott and Mirum Pharmaceuticals before founding BioNexus in 2023. Daniel Gutierrez is a customer and supporter of BioNexus. He holds a PhD in Cardiac Physiology from the University of Bern and currently works as Head of Site Network Engagement at Clinerion. BioNexus is committed to developing diagnostics which tackle women's health issues by monitoring hormones in live time. According to a recent McKinsey study, there is a 1 trillion dollar gap in the women's health sector, so the time for technologies like theirs is definitely upon us. Francois also derives motivation from his personal experience of witnessing his mother struggle with menopause and be told by doctors that she ought to conform to her loss of quality of life. They are developing a wearable patch with microneedles that measures your hormones continuously, which would be helpful not only for menopausal women but also for couples struggling to conceive. BioNexus is raising CHF 900K to boost their product development, part of which through the Swisspreneur Syndicate. Check out our deal flow page to learn more. Born and raised in Mexico, Daniel Gutierrez knew from an early age he wanted to build a career in economics. In 2009, Daniel and his wife moved to San Antonio to join the North American Development Bank as a senior analysis and structuring specialist. North American Development Bank is a binational financial institution, established by the governments of the U.S. and Mexico, that supports the development of infrastructure in the areas of potable water, wastewater treatment and solid waste, as well as projects aimed at improving air quality, conserving water, reducing energy consumption and developing renewable energy sources for communities located in the U.S.- Mexico border region. While in this role, Daniel decided to pursue his MBA and joined the Professional MBA program at Rice Business in 2012. Since graduating, Daniel has remained with North American Development Bank, and is currently the associate director of asset management. He joins host Maya Pomroy this episode to discuss growing up in Mexico in the 80s during inflation, NAFTA, how going to Rice Business' Diversity Preview Weekend changes his life's path, receiving an Owl Award for best Capstone project for Ovarcome, a Houston-based ovarian cancer nonprofit founded by another Rice Business alum, and the lessons he learned during his time at Rice. Owl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:How Mexican leaders can prepare for the future13:16 - To build the next generation of leaders in Mexico, they have to think about where they want to develop their MBA studies or studies of where they can learn leadership, all the skills the MBA program grants, and critical thinking ability. All those skills will be needed in the next years—in the next 20, 30 years, the border region between Mexico and the US is going to become very dynamic. It's probably going to be one of the greatest times to be involved in an MBA program and to use those knowledge to make great things happen in Mexican businesses.15:40 - The importance of teamwork definitely was something that I recognized from what was taught to me at Rice. And I still consider teamwork as one of the important elements of my daily working life.On his evolving interest on artificial intelligence21:41 - I'm excited about all that kind of wave of artificial intelligence coming up and bringing every debate.Copyright issues, schools that are worried that students will use that technology to present their essays, stuff like that. But the real discussion is how are we going to train the next generation to use or leverage this technology. For the betterment of human beings, for the betterment of humanity.Show Links: North American Development Bank Ovarcome Transcript Guest Profile:Daniel's LinkedIn

We dive into Daniel's motivation and drive to live the life he always envisioned.
What is it truly like to be living your dreams? Many people want a high-paying job, a beautiful family, a fast car but will it truly make them happy? He left American to live in Peru, and it was only then, he found peace with himself. Daniel is the owner of the Catalina Retreat Center where he brings people together. Daniel Gutierrez enlightens Joey Dumont about what it took to walk away from a life built on societal success and leadership, travel to a monastery in Nepal and ultimately move to Peru to open a retreat and redefine what it means to be fulfilled. In This Episode:Societal constructs around successBeing a political advisorWalking away from it allFinding inner peaceLiving outside of ‘Ego’Serving othersMoving to PeruBuilding a retreat To get to the highest tops, one must explore the deepest depths. Nobody knows that better than Daniel Gutierrez.Once a high-powered executive and in-demand consultant who graced the covers of Latin Business, Cypen and Color Magazines, Daniel realized that there was more to success than a 7-figure earning potential. As President of PRIMER, a prestigious national leadership organization and an advisor to the Department of White House Personnel for the Obama Administration, Daniel was a highly regarded and deeply revered leader. Though Daniel was listed as one of the “Top 100 Hispanics in America” along with extraordinary individuals such as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, actor Edward James Olmos and CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, something was still missing.Daniel clearly mastered the outer game. But his intuition told him that to feel fulfilled, he must also master the inner game.To everyone’s surprise, at the height of his career Daniel dared to leave it all behind and decided to dedicate the next chapter of his life to becoming a Master of Mindfulness. During the past 10 years Daniel has led nearly 30 quests to the heights of the Machu Picchu, the depths of the Amazon and the top of the Himalayas. After the boardroom, now he has been guiding entrepreneurs and corporate executives in deep dive mindfulness immersions. Though mindfulness is a lifelong practice, Daniel has become known for giving life-altering strategies in as little as 60 seconds. In the midst of Manhattan chaos, Daniel has been turning cubicles from a place of stress to pads of serenity. When facing extreme pressure, executives now go from high-strung to highly productive. Even Wall Street had to admit that when you want to climb to the top, there is nothing like following someone who is as comfortable in the boardroom as on the backbone of a mountain, having led thousands to the greatest heights of true success.A beloved mentor and sought-after motivational speaker, Daniel was featured in the documentary Luminous World Views as one of eighteen world-renowned thought leaders in the area of transformation and leadership. In November 2018 Daniel appeared as a special guest for renowned teacher, Michel Pascal on one of the biggest stages in the world, Carnegie Hall in New York City.
