Many people dream about being their own boss, opening up their own business and being self-employed. A recent survey actually found that 30% of “traditionally employed” Canadians expect to transition to self-employment in the next two years. But where do you start? There's so much to know about starting your own business and making it successful. What many people don't know is that if you are unemployed or underemployed, there are various programs and resources you can access in BC - self-employment support is one of them. In this episode, we chat with Lynne Brisdon (Manager, Self Employment Program at YMCA of Greater Vancouver), Mike Plumb (Owner at Dusk N Dawn Adventure Co and WorkBC Centre alumni) and Andrea Welling (Regional Director BC at Futurpreneur Canada) about self employment and entrepreneurship in Vancouver, and where you can go to get help getting your business off the ground.Links and Resources:Who's Hiring? The vast majority of you may already be familiar with Suzie and Love Good Fats - A quick Google or LinkedIn search will render some fantastic in-depth articles and interviews on her hyper growth business, leadership, marketing and professional career for you to digest. Because of this, I decided to take a different approach for this interview and reached out to LinkedIn with a question: "If you had the chance to sit down with a food based CPG founder who had grown their business to $100 Million of revenue in 3 Years and closed well over 10M in financing - what would you most want to know?" In this episode, Suzie generously provides us with some really insightful and in depth answers to 8 questions from real food based CPG founders and people embedded in the industry just like you! Suzie York has arguably built one of the most interesting businesses to dissect and learn from in recent food based GPG history, and it was an honor to have had the opportunity to sit down with and share a drink with Suzie over the course of this interview. ______________________________________ Web: https://www.lovegoodfats.ca/ LinkedIn: Suzie Yorke ______________________________________ Please support this podcast by checking out our show sponsors FoodPak: https://www.foodpak.com/ Futurpreneur Canada : http://www.futurpreneur.ca/packheavy Leave a review, rate the show and if you have any questions or feedback I would love to hear from you : hayden@thepackheavypodcast.com
In June, 2021 I was fortunate enough to interview Natalie Schneck (episode 29) where we touched on the state of the Canadian printing industry & marketplace, a little on what the market is demanding from printers & how they are accommodating these demands. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to interview such a wide variety of skilled, confident and highly regarded entrepreneurs so willing to share their stories on this show - and this interview is no different. Lori gives us all the inside scoop (what?) on her childhood, the impact and value that exposing her youngest son to the business has provided, and most importantly for us all.. the ins and outs of Betterwith. Lori discusses the current Frontfundr, equity crowdfunding campaign that is currently underway at Betterwith (the why and benefits of crowdfunding), some brand building and marketing tips (hint: get out of your own way and get into the spotlight), as well as what she wanted / didn't want to build into Betterwith after what was learned from the experience of her first business - the famous ‘Cupcakes' (co-founded with best friend Heather White) of which the hit reality TV Show 'The Cupcake Girls' was born. There's a lot in this show for you all - but there was so much more that we needed to discuss so hold onto your spoon.. a second helping of Betterwith will be coming very soon _______________________________ Founded in 2016 and with 6 SKUs in the freezer, Betterwith Ice Cream is made the Old-World way - with full-fat cream and simple ingredients without tons of sugar or any gums. I met Destiny & Kelsey at the From the Ground Up conference and trade show, where they were awarded as the Bronze winner of Outstanding Product of the Year, alongside Marilyn Cordoba, from Panela Lemon (Silver) and Todd & Melinda Kopet from Alkeme Foods (Gold). Bangin' Bannock was founded in 2021 by three Indigenous women entrepreneurs who were brought together by the 3C Challenge in 2020 (a 45 day Indigenous Entrepreneur Program) where they created and developed their business idea - a convenient bannock dry mix sold by the bag - the solution to getting more people to cook the traditional staple by just adding water and oil. Bannock (a quick bread usually fried or baked much like a Scone, Tea Biscuit or Damper which is common in Australia), was introduced into the indigenous culture during colonisation and the segregation of indigenous communities onto reservation lands. Bannock isn't a traditional indigenous food but rather a food that has been adapted into indigenous culture. Bannock is a source of nostalgia, a familiar symbol of home and the associations that come with it like safety, comfort, community, and good times! The team at Bangin Bannock value community and giving back, and donate to a different cause dear to them monthly - as well as connecting with community, customers and working to fulfil a future dream of opening an indigenous business hub where collaboration and mentorship will be front and centre. Bangin Bannock can be found online via their own website (shipping right across Canada) and at select retail locations. ________________________________________ Web: https://banginbannock.ca/ Instagram: @banginbannock Contact: eatbannock@gmail.com ______________________________________ Please support this podcast by checking out our show sponsors FoodPak: https://www.foodpak.com/ Brad Bodnarchuk : https://www.bradbodnarchuk.com/new-strategy-session Futurpreneur Canada : https://www.futurpreneur.ca Leave a review, rate the show and if you have any questions or feedback I would love to hear from you : hayden@thepackheavypodcast.com
I met Marilyn at the recent From the Ground Up conference and trade show, where she was awarded as the silver winner of Outstanding Product of the Year. I was lucky enough to sample Marilyn's Hazelnut cookie and wasn't surprised when she received recognition for her product - stunningly decadent and all wrapped up in a beautiful brand and story. Today's conversation touches on Marilyn's journey through entrepreneurship - from the seed of the idea, the current mechanics of her startup business, right through to the overarching vision for Panela Lemon. Marilyn's mission at Panela Lemon is to bring happiness to each one of her customers in the form of a treat. All of her products are plant based, preservative and artificial dye free and produced using high quality and local ingredients. They noticed the abundance of quick, easy, cheap and disposable convenience. Together they made lists and notes, determined what they cared about and what they valued. When the time was right in 2016 they took the leap of faith and moved away from the security of their corporate careers and city-lives with their two children, to a slow and quiet life nestled in the mountains of BC. Fast forward to today and their life is anything but slow operating and tending to Alkeme Foods. Most recently Alkeme was recognised as the gold winner of Outstanding Product of the Year at the “From the Ground Up” conference and trade show held in September by Andrea Gray-Grant and her team at Good to Grow. Bruce provides us with great insight into BC's Blue Economy and the role that the emerging BC seaweed industry is playing by helping to solve some of the biggest challenges humanity is facing today; climate change, economic instability and food security. Bruce and I touch on some exciting innovation currently underway in the seaweed and algae bioplastic space (a serious contender in the replacement of petroleum-based polymers in the future) and the impact that this will have on flexible plastic packaging and the CPG industry. Seaweed is becoming an increasingly popular ingredient and is a fantastic dietary source of iodine, vitamin K, B, zinc and iron. With this taken into account, the potential to utilise seaweed as an ingredient in your food based products to create a unique flavour, point of differentiation, nutritional boost is definitely worth considering! ________________________________________________________________________________________ Bruce Wallinger serves as a food sector director and board member with the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association (PSIA). He is also a freelance business consultant working with natural and plant-based food entrepreneurs and companies. Prior to consultancy work, Bruce was the vice president at Orca Specialty Foods Limited, Canada's leading value-added seafood processor. He also worked for Icicle Seafoods as a national sales & marketing manager for Canada. Prior to working in the seafood industry, Bruce worked directly and extensively with BC First Nations communities and tribal associations as an advisor assisting with environmental impact assessments, community-based planning, and funding. Bruce earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in geography at UBC with continuing education at BCIT and Sauder School of Business. Kerry provides us with a great explanation and insight into the value that a broker can bring to your business, and some context surrounding where a broker fits in relationship to the food brand / manufacturer, distributor and retailer dynamic. Other key takeaways from the episode include some discussion on noteworthy market & industry shifts and trends, questions to ask a broker when qualifying them for your business, some insight into membership at the Food Executives Club of Vancouver and the strong network of industry professionals that frequent events and monthly luncheons. ______________________________________ For over 60 years The Food Executive Club of Vancouver has served the vendor and retailer community in BC, connecting top executives from Canadian retail banners (so think Choices, Costco, HY Louie, London Drugs, Overwaitea, Quality Foods and T&T to name but a few) to members of the community who are primarily CGP sales and marketing executive AND people just like you - owner / operators who want to network and build relationships to help their business thrive in a competitive market. It's fair to say that The Food Executive Club of Vancouver has built one of the strongest industry communities in Canada and definitely worth looking into if you're determined to build face to face relationships. Kerry is currently the president of the organisation and thrilled to introduce the club to us during this episode. ______ Founded in 2014 by President Jim Kavanagh, Brandseed Marketing has over 30 years experience in the grocery Industry ranging from in-store retail, category and brand management. She also tells us how Futurpreneur has stepped up its own storytelling, sharing entrepreneurs' stories across staff, partners and the board to strengthen connections to the purpose and people they serve. As a result, they've tripled their employee engagement in less than three years. Plus, we explore the role entrepreneurs play in helping communities create, share and deepen the stories that bring them together, by developing places and experiences where everyone can support shared values. Join us to hear the incredible stories of entrepreneurs like Devon Fiddler, who started SheNative accessories to employ and support Indigenous women, and Mai Eilia, a refugee who started home-building business Magnum Construction to create employment for other refugees – and find out more about how you can use stories to grow your business today.

Karen Greve Young is the Chief Executive Officer of Futurpreneur Canada, Canada’s only national organization dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur’s unique model combines funding, mentorship and start-up programs to fuel the success of thousands of young entrepreneurs in every Canadian province and territory. Karen is an accomplished non-profit leader dedicated to fostering economic and social prosperity through new approaches and partnerships. How did the birth of Futurpreneur Canada come about? When Futurpreneur Canada started two decades ago before Karen even lives in Canada, there really wasn't an ecosystem for startup founders. On an event, an entrepreneur started with a blank canvas or a blank landscape without whole lot of support and in response to that a group of Canadians; that was started by a Canadian members of industry and then supported by the federal government, got the idea of providing collateral free low interest loans to entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur realize that money is an important part particularly for young entrepreneur especially if they don’t have other equity and access to funds there business. Another part that is important for Futurpreneur is its mentorship. They also make sure that the entrepreneurs also get a mentor, a guide and the support of an individual to help them on their journey and that has always been part of the motto of Futurpreneur. Futurpreneur financing, mentorship and its tools to help support these entrepreneurs from ages 18 to 39 so that they can use these in order to start their business. It is also the only organization supporting entrepreneurs that does this in every province and territory in Canada. What matters to them is an entrepreneur who is young, has an idea or a business model and can use the mentorship that they provide in order to bring the business idea to reality. Karen talks about the entrepreneur journey and how they work to support it: Entrepreneur starts with passion. They start with an idea and goal of what they want to achieve and pretty quickly they realize that they needed fuels (funds) to achieve this to get their ideas down in writing and to plan it out to get the resources they need. And often they need the confidence to actually start. What excites Karen most about this industry: "From wannapreneur to entrepreneur" Entrepreneur is the umbrella term for people starting a business but obviously there are many types of entrepreneurs. What Karen is really excited about as being a part of Futurpreneur is the scope of all the main street businesses in Canada. That means Canadian from smaller towns can come back to their hometown after college and have a vibrant job opportunities just like on the large city without having to go to a large city. It is really important that they focus on opportunities that are broader, rural and urban, and for the whole diverse range of people whether they are doing it part time with the side hustle or full time. The biggest entrepreneurial mistake that Karen see from time to time: It takes a certain amount of confidence start a business You need to have confidence to yourself and your business but should not reach arrogance or hubris. As soon as an entrepreneur stops listening to people who disagree with her or with him; that is a recipe for disaster. Having a mentor or advisers or talking to your customers who you know will say something straight given what is not what you want to hear is vital. Karen also shared with us how this situation could lead to becoming a confident blocker. Listen to my episode Ariel Garten from Muse - episode 45 where we dive in through what confident blockers do to you and what you should do to stop it. "Invite people with different opinions" Marketing/Entrepreneur Tips: Sometimes we focus too much on the messages that we want to get out that we as humans we put things in what we want to convey rather than what we want them to hear and feel. So always keep your customers in mind and focusing on what's in it for them and what are they looking for from what you are doing and REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the second best time is today" – Chinese Proverb Favorite Habit that made her say wow she was a part of: Getting out of the field and visiting their team around the country. One specific experience that Karen had was being in Halifax visiting the House of Auto Details which is an auto detailing company; a female founded who has found a gap in the industry and several years later is still going strong. The very next day, she met Nathon Kong is a Montreal-based company creating bespoke custom-tailored suits with the help of a 3D scanner which is made by local artists and some of it are done by patients from the local mental health facilities. "You are trying to embark on a new path there is no better time than now" Personal Habit: For Karen, it is all about how she starts her day early in the morning and do workouts and journaling and get things done. The last thing that she will do before getting her kids ready is she Muse headband for about 3 to 10 minutes. She uses her Muse headband to meditate, be mindful and set herself up for the day she wants to have.
