Avalon Time is an American old-time radio comedy/variety program that ran from 1938 to 1940 on NBC's Red Network. The program was named after its sponsor, Avalon cigarettes. Over the course of its run, Avalon Time was also sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh Pipe Tobacco and the Bulova Watch Company. The program is often regarded as comedian Red Skelton's first big break in show business and on radio. Show history Tobacco company Brown & Williamson, former makers of Kool cigarettes, began producing Avalon in 1932. Avalon was Brown & Williamson's 'economy' brand, while never actually mentioning that term. Instead, they were promoted as either the cigarettes that "cost you less" or the cigarettes that "give you change back". Avalon Time was the first Avalon-sponsored radio program with Show Boat premiering in 1939. The 'Reds' 'Red' was an ongoing theme and joke on Avalon Time. Coincidentally, all four hosts of the program had "red" hair. Two of the four hosts went by the name "Red". Also, the program was produced and broadcast over NBC's "Red" Network. Red Foley Avalon Time premiered as The Avalon Variety Show on October 1, 1938 with host Red Foley (1910–1968). Foley began his career in broadcasting in 1930 while still attending school at Georgetown College to perform with the house band on WLS-AM's National Barn Dance. In 1937, Foley, with producer John Lair, created the radio program Renfro Valley Barn Dance for WHAS in Louisville, Kentucky. With the premiere of The Avalon Variety Show in 1938, Foley became the first country artist to host a network radio program. Foley was the longest serving host of the program with frequent co-star Kitty O'Neill. Foley left Avalon in July 1939 and was replaced as host by up-and-coming comedian Red Skelton. Foley's replacement as singer was Curt Massey.[6] After Avalon Time, Foley returned to National Barn Dance and also became a lifelong member of the Grand Ole Opry. He also hosted Ozark Jubilee, the first popular country music television series, in the 1950s. Red Skelton Red Skelton (1913–1997) was the second host of Avalon Time. Skelton became well known for his "Doughnut Dunkers" routine[3] which led to Skelton's first appearance on Rudy Vallée's The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour on August 12, 1937. Vallée's program had a talent show segment and those who were searching for stardom were eager to be heard on it. Vallée also booked veteran comic Joe Cook to appear as a guest with Skelton. The two proceeded to trade jokes about their home towns, with Skelton contending to Cook, an Evansville native, that the city was a suburb of Vincennes, Skelton's hometown. The show received enough fan mail after the performance to invite both comedians back two weeks after Skelton's initial appearance and again in November of that year. On October 1, 1938, Skelton replaced Red Foley as the host of Avalon Time. Skelton's first wife Edna also joined the show's cast, under her maiden name of Stillwell. The Skeltons worked on Avalon Time until late 1939. Skelton went on to do his own radio show, The Raleigh Cigarette Program, on October 7, 1941. The bandleader for the show was Ozzie Nelson; his wife, Harriet, who worked under her maiden name of Hilliard, was the show's vocalist and also worked with Skelton in skits. Skelton went on to have his own successful television series named after him that ran on CBS and NBC for 20 years. Cliff Arquette Comedian Cliff Arquette (1905–1974) replaced Skelton as host of Red Skelton Time in January 1940. Arquette made a guest appearance on the show just a week earlier in December 1939. The title of the program was officially changed to Avalon Time when Arquette came aboard as host. Arquette began his career as a pianist in the early 1920s soon joining the Henry Halstead orchestra in 1923. Arquette had made a few appearances on radio including an appearance on The Jack Benny Program in 1938. Arquette left Avalon Time in May 1940 and went on to establish his most memorable --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

On February 15th, 1944 Bob Hope broadcast his program from Santa Ana's Classification Center. His guest of honor was none other than good friend Bing Crosby. In February of 1944 Frances Langford was twenty-eight years old. She grew up in Florida, and originally trained as an opera singer. A tonsillectomy changed her range and she instead shifted her vocal approach to a more contemporary big band, popular music style. As a teenager, cigar manufacturer Eli Witt heard her sing at an American Legion party and hired her to sing on a local radio show he sponsored. In 1931 Langford moved to Hollywood, appearing on Louella Parsons' radio show. She was soon heard by Rudy Vallée, and in 1935 she made her film debut in Every Night at Eight. That year she became a regular performer on Dick Powell's radio show, which Bob Hope joined in 1937. When The Pepsodent Program launched in 1938 she began a long term engagement with Hope. In February of 1944 Hope, Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour were wrapping filming of Road To Utopia, the fourth in their series of Road To films. Written by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, the film is about two vaudeville performers at the turn of the twentieth century who go to Alaska to make their fortune. Along the way they find a map to a secret gold mine. While shooting wrapped in 1944, the film wasn't released until February 27th, 1946. Its screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award the next year.

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

The jazz standard “Makin' Whoopee” — introduced in a 1928 stage musical with a performance by legendary song-and-dance man Eddie Cantor — is built around the sassiest words ever penned by one of the great lyricists of the Roarin' Twenties.Gus Kahn was born in 1886 in Bruschied, Germany, son of a cattle farmer who emigrated to the United States four years later and moved his family to Chicago. After graduating from high school, Gus worked as a clerk in a mail order business before launching one of the most successful and prolific careers on Tin Pan Alley. In the next 30 years, Kahn contributed to an extraordinary number of Great American Songbook numbers. Like what? you say. Like “Pretty Baby,” “Ain't We Got Fun?,” “Carolina in the Morning,” “Toot, Toot, Tootsie *Goo' Bye!),” “Yes Sir, That's My Baby,” “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”No wonder that in 1951 — 10 years after his death — Gus was featured in a popular movie about his life. “I'll See You in My Dreams” starred Danny Thomas as Kahn opposite Doris Day as Gus's wife, Grace LeBoy. The film was a serious hit, Warner Brothers' second-highest-grossing film of the entire year.Walter DonaldsonGus had a life-long friendship with his main collaborator, composer Walter Donaldson (who you may remember from our earlier post about their “My Blue Heaven.”) Their first collaboration was “My Buddy” in 1922. They went on to compose over one hundred songs together. In 1928, the pair composed all the tunes for a show called “Whoopee!” based on Owen Davis's play, “The Nervous Wreck.” Included in the score was “Makin' Whoopee,” the winking-est and nodding-est number of the season. The title refers to love and marriage. Quickly, though, "making whoopee" becoming a euphemism for recreational love making. Gus's lyrics begin with a sardonic celebration of a wedding (“another bride, another June … a lot of shoes, a lot of rice”), then moves on to the love nest and babies and responsibilities (‘washing dishes and baby clothes, he's so ambitious he even sews…) but then to affairs and confrontations, possible divorce, a visit to a judge…The 1928 show was successful enough, but oh, that song! In the same year that it debuted on Broadway, it also was recorded Bing Crosby and Paul Whiteman and the next year by Rudy Vallée. Then in the 1950s, after that Danny Thomas / Doris Day movie, the song was back in a big way, with versions by Nat King Cole, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. And that isn't the end. More recently, it has been recorded Dr. John and Rickie Lee Jones, by Cyndi Lauper and Tony Bennett, by Rod Stewart and Elton John. Our Take on the TuneHonestly, we don't know how a band that's been around for nearly half a century — one that has a special love for novelty and good-time tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s — could have missed this one.But the fact is it's only now that The Flood started playing around with this classic. Guess it took our newest members — Veezy Coffman and Danny Cox — to open our ears to it. We're sure glad they did. This is a public episode. How are we feeling about No Time To Die's marketing campaign? This week we round up the latest ‘No Time To Die’ news, and Bill reports from Toronto where he and a large group of Bond fans assembled for ‘Skyfall’ in Concert. We discuss the experience of seeing the film live with an orchestra and what other scores are ripe for the ‘in concert’ treatment before segueing to Billie Eilish’s UK chart success and the behind-the-scenes video narrated by Cary Fukunaga. We end on the long running time and whether this will be conducive to a satisfying close to the Craig era. Along the way we discover the O’Connell proximity effect, unfortunate honeymoons, unrecorded Bond themes by Rudy Vallée and Hoagy Carmichael, underground clubs pumping out Adele remixes, Cary Fukunaga’s outtakes, the cable guy on ‘No Time To Die’, a gun barrel intermission, an industrial dispute at MI6, a missed marketing opportunity for Dr. No, how best to wear your 007 trainers, how many Oscars the B-roll will win, redacted reminisces, and Hans Zimmer’s MasterCard. The recording took place on February 26th, 2020 in the UK, USA, and New Zealand.
