Brain Talk | Being Patient for Alzheimer's & dementia patients & caregivers
High-tech treatments for neurodegenerative diseases are on the horizon. In fact, some patients already have brain implants that help address their symptoms through “reprogramming the brain.” Hear from one patient and his doctor about the real-life story behind this innovative new treatment for Parkinson's. Speaker, author, and Parkinson's Disease advocate Benjamin Stecher and neurologist Dr. Alfonso Fasano, join Being Patient live talks to discuss their upcoming book on just this topic, Reprogramming the Brain. The upcoming book, traces the experience of Stecher and his doctor Fasano's 2021 decision to surgically implant two six-inch-long metal alloy spikes all the way through his brain. With the patient and doctor writing about the experience and what was to come afterward, the upcoming book will serve as a guide for the future of the brain and neuromodulation. Stecher, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 29, speaks regularly at academic centers and biotech companies about neurodegenerative diseases, research advocacy, and healthcare. The founder of Tomorrow Edition, he is a patient advisor to several organizations, including the Toronto Western Hospital Movement Disorder Clinic and Rune Labs. In addition to his upcoming book, he also co-wrote Brain Fables with Alberto Espay, published by Cambridge University Press. Fasano, who holds the Chair in Neuromodulation at the University of Toronto and University Health Network, is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. In addition, he is staff neurologist and co-director of the Surgical Program for Movement Disorders at Toronto Western Hospital, staff neurologist at the Hospital of Sick Children in Toronto, and clinician investigator at the Krembil Research Institute and KITE – Toronto Rehabilitation Hospital. His work focuses on the treatment of movement disorders with advanced technology, pathophysiology, and treatment of tremor and gait disorders.

Meet Parkinson's advocate Ben Stecher. Ben was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2013 at age 29 and almost immediately realized that he had to learn as much about Parkinson's as humanly possible. His drive and tenacity led him to all corners of the world meeting with the most renowned experts – scientists, researchers, doctors, authors, and advocates. Two books and ten years later Ben is still at it, now as a patient advocate at Rune Labs.Jeff sat down with Ben at the World Parkinson's Congress to hear a bit more about his story.Ben's journey: https://tmrwedition.com/my-pd-journey/ More about Rune Labs: https://runelabs.io/
Brian Pepin is the CEO of Rune Labs, and Aura Oslapas is a woman with Parkinson's who helped create the underlying software for Rune's StrivePD platform. With a focus on precision neurology and a mission to collect relevant data, Rune has refined Aura's work to create an app that allows patients to manage their everyday life better. By combining digital data with logged information, the platform provides a customized plan for each patient to manage unique symptoms. Aura explains, "I've been working in the design world for 40 years. I was someone who, early on in my Parkinson's journey, was sensitive to the medication and developing side effects pretty early on and was having challenges describing what was going on to the neurologist. I got a lot of nodding but not necessarily understanding. So personally, I wanted to better track and learn from the interplay of the medications with my symptoms and the side effects I was experiencing." Brian elaborates, "So especially through the work that we've done with Apple and getting the FDA approval with them around turning the Apple Watch into a Parkinson's symptom monitor, we're able to get this wonderful time series picture of what's going on when a patient is at home in their own environment. This gives us a look at how that relates to different medications that they're taking, or different therapies that they're on, or some of these different environmental effects, mood, exercise, and diet that can really affect somebody's quality of life." @Rune_Labs #ParkinsonsDisease #PrecisionNeurology #PrecisionMedicine #StrivePD #DigitalHealth runelabs.io Listen to the podcast here

Harry's guest this week, Brian Pepin, says there haven't really been any advances in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease in a decade. The standard treatment is still the standard treatment—meaning various drugs to replace dopamine in the brain, since the loss of neurons that produce dopamine is one of the hallmarks of the disease. But there has been one important change during that decade. Thanks to new technologies, ranging from wearables like the Apple Watch to sophisticated deep brain implants from companies like Medtronic, we're now able to gather a lot more data about what's happening in the daily lives of patients with Parkinson's, and how the disease is affecting their brain function and their physical movement. Which means there's now the potential to make much smarter and more timely decisions about how to dose the drugs patients are taking, or whether they should think about joining a clinical trials.Gathering and analyzing that information and feeding it back to patients and their doctors in a user-friendly form is the mission of Rune Labs, where Pepin is CEO. He says we're on the edge of a new era of “precision neurology,” where data gives doctors the power to predict the course of a disease and muster a meaningful clinical response. And he wants Rune Labs to be at the leading edge of that change. He has been implanted with a Deep Brain Stimulator an is also on the patient advisory board of Rune Labs where he gives them a perspective from the patient's point of view. ***This podcast is sponsored by Ripple Neuro, check out their Neuroscience Research Tools here*** Top 3 Takeaways: "It got to the point where the Livadopa medication on-off fluctuations were so impairing to my daily life that I had maybe like an hour where I felt normal per day" "But to compare it to the medication now, it's night and day. It brought my baseline to the point where I felt more or less normal. Now I'm still not completely normal, things need to be optimized, but it's night and day compared to what it was before. It's very easy now for me to have these moments where I even forget that I have this disease at all " "There's nothing in my brain that anybody can point to and say, okay, this is what Parkinson's disease is. I don't believe that Parkinson's Disease exists" 1:00 Do you want to talk about your background? 2:45 "You were pretty young when you were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In this episode, I speak with Ro'ee Gilron, Lead Scientist at Rune Labs in San Francisco. Growing up in Israel, Ro'ee was an avid reader of science fiction and popular science literature. After graduating high school and completing his compulsory military service, he attended Brandeis University, attractive due to its focus on liberal arts, and earned a BS in neuroscience. He then returned to Israel, where he received a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from Tel Aviv University, afterwards returning to the U.S. for a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. After getting job offers from both academia and industry, Ro'ee opted for industry, and is now a Lead Scientist at Rune. We'll talk about the value of internships and having a good mentor, what he learned in graduate school, why he chose a career in industry, and of course find out about what his job is like.
