We said we'd be back if there was good enough reason... And the release of Saint Etienne's final album is reason enough for us. Then add Pete and Sarah from the band to the mix, as well as some words from album contributors Nick Heyward and Erol Alkan, and you have the makings of what is perhaps our most bittersweet episode yet. Haircut 100 singer-guitarist Nick Heyward guests on this brand new Fake Show with host Jim Tofte...enjoy!!!
After 35 years UK trio Saint Etienne have decided that their 13th album, International, will be their last. They've gone out with a bang, though, collaborating Confidence Man, The Chemical Brothers Tom Rowlands and Doves' Jez Williams, Haircut 100's Nick Heyward, Erasure's Vince Clark, and more on the album's songs. We talked with 2/3rds of the band, Pete Wiggs and Sarah Cracknell, on the decision to bring an end to Saint Etienne, the many great collaborators on International, what their kids listen to, touring America (including a memorable early gig at New York's infamous Limelight Club), having Oasis open for them in 1994, their 2026 farewell tour, and more. We are deliriously honored to have Nick Heyward return to the podcast to discuss his upcoming tour with Howard Jones (starts on the 2nd) and Deep Dive some of the Pelican West album with us. I say "some" because he only had an hour and we only covered five songs. BUT, there are enough goodies in the conversation, I have no doubt you'll enjoy hearing about how he made this perfect album (and the only one he made with the band before going solo). It's so nice having Haircut 100 a growing concern again after so many years. This tour is going to be amazing! Look for me at the Salt Lake City show! It's the end, the end of the Seventies. It was a decade that had started with Edison Lighthouse and ended with Another Brick in the wall. After 221 number one singles, the decade that had given us everything from Bowie to Bell bottoms, from Chopper bikes to Chiquitita, Glam to Punk, and Sapphire to Steel, was closing down - and at a sensible hour too!On the 31st December 1979, Kenny Everett asked the (more discerning) viewers on ITV, if he would indeed make it 1980. With the iconic help of Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Boomtown Rats and many more, he just about crossed over into that new decade. But really listens, the future was already with us.And yes, 1979 did seem rather grim - a winter of discontent, political upheaval, TV strikes and terrorism. But isn't this exactly the kind of period when popular culture and significantly POP, POP, POP MUZIK comes to save us all? The kids were indeed, alright! So, in the company of some very special guests - singer/songwriter and pop legend Nick Heyward and Record Collector's very own Daryl Easlea - as we revisit the cultural tsunami that is the NOW Yearbook 1979. Rediscover a glittering embarrassment of 7” smashes from the likes of Sparks, Chic, Blondie, Squeeze, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Roxy Music. The list, just like the glorious pages of Daryl's 1979 diary goes on and on.As well as sharing his fabulous boxset, 1993–1998: The Epic & Creation Years, Nick tells us about how important 1979 was in shaping his own musical journey. From the early days of (what would become) Haircut 100, to rediscovering kitchen sink somewhere up a junction, to defining a look and sound as the seventies morphed into the eighties. We explore the sounds of 1979 - from XTC to The Knack, from Rainbow to Sad Cafe (yes, really!), how punk was evolving into New wave, which was evolving into New Pop which… (yes, we get the idea: Ed)And also how video wasn't exactly killing the radio star, but through visuals a new age was really dawning for pop. So, lets take a One Way Ticket, One Step Beyond some Parisienne Walkways (we're not keeping these in! Ed)1979.Wow, indeed. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Nick Heyward was one of our favourite cover stars when we were at Smash Hits in the ‘80s, the days when hardcore Haircut One Hundred fans turned out in Fair Isle sweaters and Sou'Westers. He now lives mostly in Florida, he's made nine solo albums – one magnificently titled Open Sesame Seed - and he's toured again with his old band after ten years' painful separation. Touring the UK in October, he couldn't be more upbeat about the road ahead – “I can do anything!” – and looks back here at the first shows he saw and played himself. Which involves … … seeing Count Basie, Ray Charles and Oscar Peterson on the same bill when he was 12. … “if you stop playing music you're like the boxer that gave up the fight”. … pop dress codes, knock-off pop merchandise and trips to Shellys Shoes. … growing up in Beckenham where Bowie was “the lighthouse beam that made being a pop star possible”. … old schoolfriends and Haircut One Hundred members Les and Graham and how “we got our friendship back”. … why seeing XTC was “like plugging into electricity”. … Buzzcocks and Boomtown Rats at the Croydon Greyhound. … how he was saved by management. … singing Love Plus One in Salisbury Cathedral. … and the lingering thrill of his first reviews (by Graham K Smith and Adrian Thrills). "Fantastic Day" Formed in 1980 in London, the new wave funk outfit Haircut 100 are one of those bands that tore right out of the gates. A top four single Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) before even having a record out was a pretty propelling start. That record came in the form of 1982's platinum seller Pelican West, which not only went to #2 on the UK albums chart, it spawned more Top 10 singles like Love Plus One, Fantastic Day and Nobody's Fool. Singer Nick Heyward, left the band after their debut and embarked on a brilliant solo career, which yielded hit singles like Whistle Down The Wind and Blue Hat For A Blue Day, along with flawless albums like North Of A Miracle, From Monday To Sunday and The Apple Bed. And now Haircut 100 are back, playing shows across the U.K. including Glastonbury and North America in August and you should see them if you can because they've never sounded better. And I believe new music is on the way, which is very exciting. For my money, Nick Heyward is one of the most brilliant songwriters of all time. It's hard to think of someone who writes with such elegance, finesse and melodic muscle. He's a master craftsman, a writer with poetic poise and harmonic genius. I think this guy's practically peerless and his work has meant so much to me for a very long time. www.haircut100.com (http://www.haircut100.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
In Episode #184 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to singer/songwriter and indie-dance pop icon Lisa Moorish about her new album, Divine Chaos. This is Moorish's first new music in 20 years, released on the sister label to Irvine Welsh's Jack Said What imprint. Lisa wanted to work with a female co-producer on this new album and teamed up with Zoe Devlin Love (Alabama 3). Renowned producer Steve Mac brought an extra dimension to the collection's tougher electronic beats. Together, they have delivered many flavours—from dance-influenced tracks to indie electronica—amalgamating Lisa's varied sounds across the decades. Lisa Moorish first made her name in music as a teenager when she had a club hit in 1989 with Rock To The Beat, a track written by Detroit techno luminaries Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson that fed into the UK's acid house explosion. She went on to work with the likes of Paul Weller and George Michael before being swept up in the Britpop scene and recording vocals on tracks by some of the biggest bands of that era — Oasis, Blur and Ash. She then started her indie electro-punk band, Kill City, in the early noughties, and they were snapped up by music mogul Alan McGee and signed to his new label, Poptones. In this interview, Lisa discusses the writing and recording of Divine Chaos, duetting with George Michael, the Britpop scene and more. Sananda Maitreya should feel proud of the mesmerising journey his music has taken since Introducing The Hardline brought him to an unsuspecting world in 1987. Conceived initially as a 13-song guitar-led record staying on bass, drums and two guitars, his new album The Pegasus Project: Pegasus & The Swan now features 41 tracks presented as two sides - it is an epic album that soars, gallops and tumbles, revealing fresh insight with every listen. In this interview, Sananda Maitreya discusses the writing and recording of the album. We also delved into his name change, Irish heritage, and more. In Episode #179 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to legendary DJ/Producer Arthur Baker, credited as a leader, pioneer, and trailblazer in electronic music. Masterminding breakthrough experimentation with tape edits and sampling. He left Boston for New York at the start of the 1980s. Initially DJing and producing disco and soul, he was drafted in by Tommy Boy Records to produce for hip-hop crew Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force. Planet Rock, the seminal single — with vocals by MC G.L.O.B.E. — that came out of those sessions, unwittingly kick-starting a revolution: electro. Baker would go on to become an award-winning DJ and music and film producer, producing and mixing such artists as Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, New Order, The Pet Shop Boys, Fleetwood Mac and Hurts. In Episode #176 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to Neil Arthur from Blancmange about the career-spanning compilation Everything is Connected (The Best of Blancmange 1979-2024). Blancmange's story is one of two distinct chapters. In the early ‘80s, they infused the emergent synth-pop scene with oblique lyrics, wry British humour and occasionally tabla-tinged sonics, an unlikely mix which saw them soar into the Top 10 with singles such as Living On The Ceiling, Blind Vision and Don't Tell Me. And since 2011's Blanc Burn album, they've taken that singular style into a new century and somehow become more prolific than ever. Now Blancmange brings all – well, 38 to be precise – of these highlights together with the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, released on London Records on 11th May 2024. In this interview, Neil Arthur discusses the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, his love for Abba getting stopped by the police on his way to Top of the Pops and lots more. Scheduled for release on March 29th, Interplay marks a significant milestone for the Oxford-based quartet, being their third album since their reunion in 2014. Surpassing the duration of their original 90s phase, Ride has maintained their iconic status as shoegaze pioneers and evolved and embraced new sonic territories. This marks a significant return for Cast, with their first album in six years set to be released on February 16th.
