“The same was in neuro intervention for aneurysms, it was open clipping or it was endovascular. And I think that’s what’s happening in BCI. So there’s a bunch of craniotomy-based, open BCI companies, and then there’s an interventional approach”, Synchron’s founder and CEO Tom Oxley explains to Bloomberg Intelligence. In this Vanguards of Health Care podcast episode, Tom sits down with BI analyst Matt Henriksson for an in-depth interview about the company and how he utilized his experience with minimally invasive endovascular procedures to create its Stentrode as novel way to utilize brain-computer interfaces (BCI) without open brain surgery.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Electronic devices that tap into a human's nervous system have been around for decades, for example to help paralysed people move and deaf people hear. Now, a new generation of neurotechnology promises to revolutionise treatments for a range of conditions that afflict billions of people. We look at the benefits and assess the risks with Jen French, a campaigner for access to neurotechnlolgy who has been using a device for 25 years since a snowboarding accident made her quadriplegic. And Tom Oxley, the CEO of neurotech startup Synchron, explains how 'brain computer interfaces' are giving paralysed patients the ability to use computers and smart phones. They also address concerns about things such as data privacy, unequal access to health tech, and device 'abandonment'.

Brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, aim to enable people to control various adaptive devices directly with their thoughts. There are many BCI devices currently in various stages of development, with the potential to help people with ALS and similar conditions across many different activities of daily life. One particular area in which BCI devices may be able to support people with advanced ALS symptoms is communication. Many people with ALS rely on devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops to write or speak. All tools like these, collectively known as augmentative and alternative communication or AAC devices, need some kind of input to work. This could mean using a keyboard, a touchscreen, or, for people with advanced paralysis, an eye-gaze device. As ALS progresses, however, even eye gaze devices may become difficult for some people to use. BCIs—by allowing people to control AAC devices with their minds—could be a potential solution to this problem. Today, on Endpoints, we’re joined by two experts to discuss BCI technology and, in particular, its potential to help people with ALS continue to communicate. The views expressed in this podcast are those of the speakers and do not represent official endorsements by any organization. Kate Nilsen currently serves as an advisor to Synchron, a company developing a brain-computer interface (BCI) device. This device is investigational and is currently in clinical trials approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sam Altman is preparing to co-found a new company funded by OpenAI that will go up against Elon Musk's Neuralink, The Financial Post reported. The startup, called Merge Labs, will use AI for its brain-computer interface and compete directly with Neuralink, along with other nascent companies in the field like Precision Neuroscience and Synchron. In other news, Apple is still hard at work on becoming a relevant player in AI. The latest missive from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg suggests that Apple is shifting its artificial intelligence goals to center on new device segments. Sources reportedly told the publication that Apple has a slate of new smart home products in the works that could help pivot its lagging AI strategy; and Amazon is expanding its same-day grocery delivery service with the addition of perishable food items in over 1,000 US cities. Shoppers can now add fresh grocery items like produce, dairy, meat, seafood and frozen foods to their orders. Learn more about your ad choices.

In this week's Digital Health Roundup, MedTech Insight's Shubham Singh explores how Ketryx's launch of validated AI agents could reshape compliance automation in medtech. Marion Webb highlights news from BCI makers Synchron, Axoft and Subsense. Elizabeth Orr discusses AI advances at the FDA.
We're diving deep into a bold new frontier at the intersection of brain-computer interfaces and consumer tech. Seriously. Joining us is Kurt Haggstrom, Chief Commercial Officer at Synchron, the pioneering company behind the FDA-authorized Stentrode—a brain-computer interface that's redefining accessibility. With Apple now collaborating with Synchron, what does this mean for the future of human-device interaction? Why did Apple choose Synchron over competitors like Neuralink? And how close are we to everyday mind-controlled tech? We'll explore the science, ethics, risks, and revolutionary potential of this partnership—from restoring communication for people with paralysis to the deeper implications for data privacy, policy, and the future of the human mind. Join us as we get rebelliously curious.
