Abrimos una nueva temporada de Rebelión Sónica en radio Rockaxis. Y para este primer capítulo del programa, que ahora se transmite los jueves a las 10 y 22 horas, revisaremos parte del nuevo trabajo de la cantante francesa Laetitia Sadier, “Rooting for Love”, además de material de su banda madre Stereolab, incluido en la extensa recopilación editada este año en un box set con el nombre de “Switched On Volumes 1-5”. El nuevo álbum de Laetitia Sadier fue lanzado el 23 de febrero por el sello Drag City y se trata del sucesor de “Find Me Finding You” que la artista publicó en 2017 con el Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble. En la web de la disquera, puede leerse que “Laetitia hace un llamado a las civilizaciones traumatizadas de la Tierra: se nos insta a evolucionar finalmente más allá de nuestros incontables milenios de sufrimiento y alienación”. This week on the show: a conversation with Laetitia Sadier. As the main vocalist of Stereolab, her spacey voice shines as the human core in that project's motorik and dense avant-pop, a blend of electronic music, krautrock, space age lounge sounds, and much more.  Outside of that legendary band, Sadier has been an active force on her own. She's appeared in a variety of contexts on albums by Common, Tyler the Creator, Atlas Sound, and Deerhoof. In 1996, she formed Monade, a solo vehicle, and in 2010, she released her debut under her own name, The Trip, on Drag City. Her latest is called Rooting for Love and it's out now. Joined by members of the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble and a multiple voice choir, these minimalist tapestries, Brazilian glide, and propulsive ambient funk yearn for a kind of gnosis—sacred knowing. We don't often make a habit of quoting directly from album descriptions, but we can't resist sharing this bit: On Rooting for Love, “Laetitia issues a call to the traumatized civilizations of Earth: we're urged to finally evolve past our countless millennia of suffering and alienation.” Sadier joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss, among other things, discussion about taking care of our collective body; the planet itself, the radical potentiality of “love,” what it felt like to reunite Stereolab in 2019, her engagement with hip-hop, and reflections on working with The Trip producer Richard Swift. Tim Gane und Lætitia Sadier sind nicht nur die treibenden Kräfte hinter der äusserst einflussreichen (und grossartigen!) Band Stereolab, sondern auch Kurator:innen eines kleinen, aber feinen Labels namens «Duophonic Super 45s». Dort erschienen zuletzt vor allem Stereolab-Reissues... ...nun sind letzten Freitag aber gleich zwei neue Langspieler von brandneuen Projekten erschienen, die musikalisch durchaus in der Stereolab-Nachbarschaft anzusiedeln sind. Das wären zum einen der hypnotische und psychedelische Erstling «Flickering i» von Astrel K (ein Soloprojekt des britischen Musikers Rhys Edwards, welches in Stockholm entstanden ist), zum anderen das selbstbetitelte Album von Ghost Power. Bei letzterem steckt übrigens tatsächlich Stereolab drin (Tim Gane ist eine Hälfte des Projekts). Zuhause irgendwo zwischen Yéyé aus den 60ern und Post-Punk aus den frühen 80ern. Very groovy!

Lætitia Sadier ist die Stimme von Stereolab. Die Sängerin und Musikerin aus Frankreich prägt seit den 90ern die Avantgarde der Popmusik. Niemand singt so schön schwermütig wie Laetitia Sadier. Mit ihrer Band Stereolab hat sie Indie-Pop neu erfunden: verstrahlter Krautrock trifft auf coolen New Wave und Easy Listening aus Vintage Synthesizern. Als Solo-Künstlerin hat sie u.a. mit Rapgott Tyler the Creator, dem Elektronikexperimentalduo Mouse on Mars und HipHop-Größe Common zusammengearbeitet.

Lætitia Sadier is the voice of Stereolab. The singer and musician from France has been shaping the avant-garde of pop music since the 90s. No one sings as beautifully melancholic as Laetitia Sadier. With her band Stereolab, she has reinvented indie pop: radiated Krautrock meets cool New Wave and easy listening from vintage synthesizers. As a solo artist, she has collaborated with rap god Tyler the Creator, the electronica experimental duo Mouse on Mars and hip hop great Common, among others. In her soundtrack, Lætitia Sadier tells us about her connection to black music, the beginnings of Stereolab and her favourite collabos.

Lætitia Sadier - "New Moon," a 2021 single on Drag City. Laetitia Sadier's heavenly croons became familiar to us via Stereolab back when they appeared on the scene in the early ‘90s. On our Song of the Day, “New Moon,” Sadier proves her vocals have not only remained intact but, like a fine wine, have grown with age. The lead single off her forthcoming, as yet untitled, solo record is founded by a sultry bossa nova beat with dreamy guitar strums and poetic, somewhat esoteric, lyricism. “Dreaming you fall /Into being /Turbulent transition /Evade /Overriding /The feelings,” Sadier calls out. Recorded in London by Sadier and Hannes Plattmeier, she had this to say about "New Moon": "The nature of trauma - by going through a process of feeling the emotions of all of that has stricken or afflicted us, individually. By not avoiding these feelings, it's a way to evolve and cut the ties of the past, that are keeping us down and into the turmoil we are currently experiencing.” The new record follows 2017's Find Me Finding You, which was released under the name Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble. Stereolab released the compilation album Electrically Possessed, which collected the band's rarities spanning from 1999 to 2008, in early 2021. Bats are vital for maintaining balance in the ecosystems they are a part of: Bats keep insect populations in check, pollinate flowers, and disperse seeds. Bats are also an incredibly diverse group of species that come in all shapes and sizes! Did you know, that if you randomly picked a mammal, you would have a one in five chance of picking a bat? Today we have Dr. Alexa Sadier with us to talk about what studying bats can teach us about evolution.

Bat species are numerous and diverse, and are found in nearly every corner of the globe. Therefore, they serve as a valuable system to study the evolution of mammalian traits. Dr. Alexa Sadier collected field and museum samples from over 50 species of bats to ask how color vision evolved in this unique group of mammals. By looking at gene expression at multiple levels - DNA, RNA, and protein - Sadier determined that different bat species have color vision capabilities adapted to their diets, and UV vision has been lost independently in multiple species through regulation of all levels of gene expression. By “catching” evolution in action, Sadier's research has revealed important insights into the mechanisms of evolution through trait loss.

Someone has to make the difference, between the seeming and the meaning.

For many young indie music fans making their way through the "alternative" section of their local record store in the mid-90s, it was the music of Stereolab, and in particular the voice of chanteuse Laetitia Sadier, that provided a pre-Internet window into the worlds of French New Wave, German krautrock and a sprinkling of Marxist politics. In her 2015 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Sadier discussed Stereolab’s "disastrous" relationship with the French music press, the influence of the Smiths and more.
