Big Ocean are the world's first K-Pop boy band with hearing loss. Each of the three members; Jiseok, PJ and Chanyeon, has a different level of hearing. They use hearing aids and cochlear implants to hear sounds and use lip reading for communication. The band use metronomes that display lights and smartwatches that communicate the beat through vibrations to help them when dancing. And they have used AI technology trained with the members' voice data to help them hit the correct pitch. As part of their first European tour, they came into the What in the World studio to chat to us about the challenges they've faced and overcome and how the deaf community has responded to them. We also hear from Big Ocean fan or PADO (which means wave in Korean) Jade Dunne who is a musician and has progressive hearing loss, on how the band has inspired her. Big Ocean incorporate Korean Sign Language, American Sign Language and International Sign into their choreography. Gavin Songer from the UK charity the National Deaf Children's Society explains what other tech there is to help people with hearing loss experience music. You can also watch the video of this interview on YouTube - search for What in the World or click here for our playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4eMOlGZclzdcHmv7s8BFQE6Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producers: Benita Barden and Julia Ross-Roy Video Journalist: Beatrice Guzzardi Editor: Verity Wilde

This week, we crank the wayback machine to 1972, a year filled with political turmoil, social unrest, and a whole lotta groovy, life affirming, socially conscious, groundbreaking music that cut across multiple genres and geographic boundaries. With possibly our most eclectic batch of lists yet, we cover a good cross section of what 1972 had to offer. Joining us on this journey are guitarist/vocalist Henry Girard and drummer/vocalist Pablo Garcia from Montreal garage-pop provocateurs The Wesleys, who have just released their highly anticipated Self-Titled debut LP on Little Village Records. The debut album is a dynamic exploration that ventures into a sonic landscape that transcends conventional boundaries, blending elements of the rock, power pop, indie, and alternative genres. The Wesleys embrace their DIY ethos, channeling their creativity into music that feels authentic and natural, a reflection of their shared passion and unwavering dedication. The Wesleys craft melodic rock n' roll songs that resonate with both heart and adrenaline, and will surely appeal to fans of The Clean, The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, Pixies, The Shins, or Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. Plus: Get the inside scoop on the awesome Montreal scene! Teletubbies on acid! Trouble at the border! Trudeau cuts off the band's wifi! Morgan Freeman! Hockey! Capes! Clam pizza! Ever found yourself drawn to the thrill of airsoft? You'll want to tag along for this episode as we sit down with Austin Porter, a member of the Showgun team, for some shooting-the-breeze banter. Austin's journey from a rural, airsoft-loving child to a full-fledged team player in the Battle of LA, against some of the sport's finest, is nothing short of inspiring. His humorous recounts from the event have us in stitches, but also serve as a testament to his resilience and determination.Austin weaves in his strategic insight, shedding light on how tactical acumen matters more than gear in this sport. Listen as he mentors younger players, gifting them with strategies to exploit their stature for the win. The thrill of hunting for gun charms or patches from kills is as real as it gets, and Austin's favorite weapon, plus his unique idea of a patch to commemorate his kills, keep you gripped. His determination is palpable, as seen in the growth of his gun collection, which he cleverly uses to create striking thumbnails for our podcast. But my chat with Austin isn't just about airsoft. Listen in as he talks about his tattoos that represent his three brothers and his love for the game, Kingdom Hearts. And if that's not enough, Austin's unique idea to build a mini tank for his mom from a motorized wheelchair and body armor is sure to bring a smile to your face. Tune in for a blast of airsoft adventures, laughter, and life lessons.https://www.instagram.com/theaustinporterhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfcogCnCcsNZZLQkYJL81Tghttps://www.instagram.com/PRETTYMUCH/ Support the showThank you everyone for the support. Last year, AmazeVR launched their Into the Hottiverse virtual concert experience at SXSW featuring Megan Thee Stallion before taking it on a VR concert tour at AMC theaters around the United States. This year AmazeVR is back with an even more streamlined production and production process with a K-Pop band named Aespa that their aiming to launch their own VR application with later this summer. They continue to push the fidelity and resolution up higher and higher as they use bespoke and proprietary pipeline with some AI secret sauce that seamlessly integrates their stereoscopic footage into a spatialized environment. It's a 2D billboarded process that still manages to convey enough volumetric cues as to create a super compelling volumetric experience. These types of intimate VR concert and musical experiences shows the power of 360 video technologies, especially for the more non-gaming or non-technical audiences who are searching for new and novel ways to connect with their favorite artists and musicians. So AmazeVR is looking to carve out a unique niche for bringing more and more musical artists into VR through their platform starting with their own custom app slated to launch later this year. I had a chance to catch up with Lance Drake, Creative Director & Director of Content at AmazeVR as well as with Seth Kwon, Head of Business at AmazeVR at SXSW to hear about their latest production and upcoming plans for where they're planning to take the AmazeVR platform in the future. Keep an eye on their app as it launches later this year as it could be a catalyst to start to bring even more people in to VR.

While you've maybe never heard of them here in America, in the German-language indie rock world, Von Wegen Lisbeth are a pretty big deal.
Canadian indie-pop band Stars makes almost orchestral pop that has the bonus quality of being danceable. They've also got a knack for vividly descriptive storytelling, built around the dueling vocals of singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan. Formed in the early 2000's, Stars has been “remarkably stable” over the years; they enjoy making one another laugh, they've written a play, and even fiction about themselves. Their ninth studio album, From Capelton Hill, covers pandemic shock, explores memory – perhaps with a sepia tinge, and has a strong sense of place. Stars plays remotely for the Soundcheck Podcast. Stars plays a Bandcamp Live-streaming set at 5PM on May 27. Set list: “To Build a Fire”, “Capelton Hill”, "Patterns" Watch "To Build a Fire":
