Health monitoring company Whoop, founded and led by CEO Will Ahmed, hid a secret message on the circuitboard of its latest wearable device. “It says, ‘Don't bother copying us, we will win,'” Will says. “And it also has every engineer who worked on Whoop 4.0's initials.” For more than 10 years, Whoop has attracted fans from world-famous athletes to everyday consumers, and its deep-pocketed rivals have noticed. After financing talks with Amazon fell apart, “they just directly ripped us off” and made a copycat product called the Amazon Halo. “We were energized by it and we were kinda like, ‘OK, bring it on,'” Will says.In this episode, Will and Joubin discuss sounding relatable, only children, Persian taarof, Michael Jordan's birthday party, why measuring sleep is more important than measuring steps, overcoming doubt, understanding sleep, 24/7 wearables, the sleep leaderboard, LeBron James, Will's wearable “hit list,” getting ripped off by Amazon, detecting COVID-19, cold showers, disassociating yourself from your business, and the misguided “Zoom craze."In this episode, we cover: Simple, clear communication (04:31) What Will has learned from his unique parents, and his Persian wife (08:35) Checking people's wrists and why Joubin doesn't have a Whoop yet (15:28) Hanging out with sports idols (20:08) How Whoop got started (23:07) Staying confident in the face of doubters (27:59) How Whoop decided what to measure, and why it's not a smartwatch (31:44) The $100 sleep bonus and “red recoveries" (38:07) Competing against Nike, Under Armour, Apple, and more (42:21) Pivoting to a subscription model and the impact of COVID (45:04) Getting ripped off by Amazon (49:11) How Whoop got started on COVID research early (51:29) Will's everyday habits, including cold showers and meditation (57:21) What Whoop is hiring for, and why they are largely in-office (01:01:16) Links: Connect with Will Twitter LinkedIn Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner Perkins
Soon enough, a bedside Amazon device might know whether you're sleeping — or not. The e-commerce and tech giant said it will start selling a device later this year that can track sleeping patterns without a wristband. The device, called Halo Rise, will use no-contact sensors and artificial intelligence to measure a user's movement and breathing patterns, allowing the device to track sleep stages during the night, the Seattle-based company said. Amazon said the device “does not include cameras or microphones,” and will go for $139.99. The Halo Rise would be the latest device in Amazon's Halo line, which includes a fitness tracker that can track physical activity and sleeping patterns. Amazon noted the device can connect with its virtual assistant, Alexa, and allow users to wake up to their favorite songs and a light that “simulates the colors and gradual brightening of a sunrise.” The new device highlights the company's ever-growing move to integrate its technology in consumers' lives, and broaden its reach into wellness. Its healthcare ambitions have grown over the years, seen most recently in its planned $3.9 billion acquisition of the primary care organization One Medical. The deal is currently under review by the Federal Trade Commission. Amazon, which has faced scrutiny over its handling of consumer data, quickly offered assurances that the information in the Halo Rise device will be kept safe — saying the “health data is encrypted in transit and at rest in the cloud.” “Amazon Halo health data is not used for marketing, product recommendations, or advertising, and never sold,” the company said. Separately, Amazon said it will release a new Kindle Scribe, the first Kindle consumers can write on. It will also add more features to its Ring doorbell cameras, home robot Astro, and release new Echo devices. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Today is a normal style episode where I talk about products I'm pondering, trying, loving (special shout out to Jamie Ivey's new kids book "God Made You To Be You"), and of course, consumer news that moms want to hear. However, today is a little different, because the news section is dedicated to Amazon. A lot was mentioned in a past Amazon press release, so I picked out the the relevant tidbits I think you would like to hear. SHOW NOTES: This post contains affiliate links. You don't pay any extra, and I earn a small commission. I'd also like to call attention if prices I mentioned in this episode were prices I paid at the current time and may not reflect the prices you would pay at the time of reading or listening to this. About this time every year, Amazon announces a slew of new products. Some of them are fairly normal: new Echo devices, smart screens, video doorbells. But sometimes the company will roll out something truly bonkers, like a flying home security drone or a Roomba-like robot with an extending periscope camera that wheels around your house. Outlandish or otherwise, the company's output offers a look at where it's headed. And this year, Amazon seems increasingly intent on becoming a home security company. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED senior associate reviews editor Adrienne So joins us to talk about Amazon's deluge of new products, including that absurd Astro robot. Show Notes: Read Lauren's story about Amazon's Astro robot. Check out everything Amazon announced at its September event. If for some reason you want to buy Amazon's Ring home drone, you'll have to get on the invite list. Here's Adrienne's story about the Amazon Halo fitness tracker that listens to your tone of speech. And here's Lauren's review of the Amazon Dash shelf. Also read Engadget's story about how Amazon is turning into a security company. Recommendations: Adrienne recommends the Back Bay Tempo 30 earbuds. Mike recommends the “Folk Fabrique” playlist on Spotify. Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." With January in the books, what did you learn about yourself?I set six daily goals and with January in the books, I was successful 50.4% of the time. We all have to start someplace.80 oz of water 67%7 Hours of Sleep 67%Scale Went Down 58%Took a Multivitamin 54%30M of Exercise 42%1900 Calories 17%I started the month at 235.3 (a new record high for me) and I ended the month at 234.03. As I wanted to be 231, I was off from my goal, but I did lose (so it could be worse)Leave Yourself Some MarginI had a hard drive crash. So many times when I went to do something I had to start from scratch. In the end I'm getting my files back (4 TB of data thanks to Backblaze) but the 9 days without the files I need to operate really put a new level of stress on me that had me taking more trips to the kitchen. When I opened my Healthy Wage app, it let me know in very clear words, "I'm behind my goal." OK, we get that. That is over. Let's put it behind us and focus on what we can do to turn it around. So by looking at what I was doing right (and this meant tracking EVERYTHING that went in my mouth) and what I wasn't it was OBVIOUS that I need to focus on the calories going into my body. Not really a surprise, but the data smacked me in the head and got me to refocus. The Amazon Halo - More than a Tone of Voice DetectorI spoke about the Amazon Halo when it first came out. We all were interested in the "tone of voice detection" and that it took somewhat creepy 3D pictures of you and stated that it was super accurate in regards to body fat percentage. The device stated it was distraction-free, and consequently, I ignored it most of the time I ignored. This week I started to look at the exercise and labs and some of these were interesting. I like the guided "win won for the gipper" kind of talks on 10 minute walks (great for walking around the block). There are labs (goals) like "Drink a glass of water before every meal." The bad news is you need to keep the app in front of you (put it on the front screen of your phone). You can have it send notifications to your phone (but for me, those are easy to get lost in the sea of notifications). In the end, it is YOU who has to keep focused on your goals. The nice thing is these extra programs from different sources (like weight watchers, headspace, etc) are only $4 a month. That beats some of these other monthly fees for things like peleton, fit, apple. The ads for Amazon Halo are disturbing. The app itself? Much too intrusive. We should be doing things with our own two hands or the help of others, not apps all the time.

On today's Health in 2 Point 00, Jessica is distracted playing video games, and rants about the unbearable maleness of wearables.
