The Future of Internal Communication
Why sustainability is a community effort with Adam Bastock

The Future of Internal Communication

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2024 40:26

Adam Bastock was enjoying a successful career in digital marketing when he realised the planet was in crisis and decided to do something about it. In 2020 he set up Small99 with a mission to help the UK's small businesses become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint. He's gone from strength to strength since then. Adam is the brain behind People, Planet, Pint – a social meetup for anyone concerned about climate change and sustainability. Originally devised as a meetup after COP22 in Adam's hometown of Glasgow, PPP has gone on to operate in 75 cities across 10 countries. Community, it's clear, is a great catalyst and enabler of change. In this episode Jen, Cat and Dom chat with Adam to hear how SME's are responding to the climate crisis and what role he thinks communication plays in successful community building and behaviour change. About Adam Adam is the founder of Small99. Small99™ is helping small businesses to take positive action to reduce their carbon footprint to become more sustainable and profitable. Vision - Our Ambition To create the Small99™ Carbon Reduction Community – a positive and energetic force that supports small businesses to make their vital contribution to the UK's carbon reduction targets. Mission At Small99™ we provide practical support, tools and local meetups to start 1 million small businesses on their path to net zero by 2025. We're doing this because existing guidance often overlooks small businesses, yet 99% of businesses in the UK employ fewer than 49 employees - together they can make a huge contribution to reducing the UK's carbon output. Our Story Small99™ is helping small businesses to take positive action to reduce their carbon footprint to become more sustainable and profitable. The UK's small business community has the power to make a vital contribution to our carbon reduction targets. Small99™ is creating a movement for change – a movement that is empowering small businesses by creating a portfolio of practical tools, support and networking opportunities. The Small99™ process is practical, approachable and, importantly, it aligns with the targets of companies like Microsoft. It enables small businesses to evaluate their footprint, set targets for reducing it and measure their progress. The Small99™ team is ambitious for change and aims to connect with one million businesses by 2025 – businesses that can, with our help, improve their sustainability and profitability and help the UK meet its carbon reduction targets. How we do it You can join us at our People, Planet, Pint™ events held across the UK and internationally. They're a great way to meet other small businesses, to share your challenges, ideas and experiences so that you can learn from others. You can attend one of our CRAB (Carbon Reduction Action Box) workshops where, in a couple of hours, you can create a baseline for your carbon reduction plan, scope your next steps and make some good connections along the way. You can access our online Carbon Reduction Measurement tool to help you take action and monitor your progress. It's a simple, effective and accessible and provides the information you need to plan for and reduce your carbon Footprint. You can get expert support from our team when you need help to stay on track. You can estimate your digital carbon footprint quickly in detail too. Already, we've engaged with more than 9,000 businesses in the past 2 years through our workshops, tools and events. We organise around 60 events a month across the world to bring small businesses together - including Chicago, Singapore and Australia. Join the Small99™ Carbon Reduction Movement – it's simple, accessible anddesigned to help you and your business to become more sustainable and Profitable.   Our Work Small99 has directly trained over 6,000 businesses in the past 2 years on the topic of Net Zero, focusing on small businesses that were feeling overwhelmed and confused by the existing guidance available. Adam Bastock, Small99 Founder, studied at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leaders (CISL), and has since worked with multiple organisations throughout the UK under the Small99™ brand. Some of Small99's partnerships include: “Net Zero 360”, with Clean Growth UK, to guide hundreds of businesses to measure and reduce their footprint. The development and delivery of lightweight, first step, sustainability workshops with Small Business Britain. “Step up to Net Zero” with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, a fully funded placement program for 60 businesses. Scottish Council of Voluntary Organizations, to develop tools for “Growing Climate Confidence”, a ‘where to start' resource for the third sector.   For full details, see “Our Work”.

Created earlier this year, the Scottish Council on Global Affairs (SCGA) is Scotland's only think tank on international affairs. In this discussion, Dr Mateja Peter and Professor Philipps O'Brien talk to host Stephen Gethins about the role of SCGA and the importance of a think tank which can explore the big issues affecting Scotland, the UK and the world from a uniquely Scottish perspective. As Professor O'Brien points out, the wealth of knowledge and expertise on global affairs is huge within Scottish academia and it is with this in mind that the Universities of St Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow got together to form the SCGA. With the backing of both the UK and Scottish Governments, the SCGA wants to educate and inform, create and publicise its work to a wide audience. As well as offering a different perspective on matters than those in a ‘metropolitan bubble', Dr Peter stressed that the SCGA aims to be accessible not only to academics but also to those working in civil society, so everyone can feed into policy recommendations and benefit from them. As listeners will hear, topics including security and the High North and feminist foreign policy are key themes to be explored by the SCGA. In addition, as Professor O'Brien says, big issues like the invasion of Ukraine and the impact of a northern superpower up-ending “normal behaviour” in place since 1945, plus climate change and the impact of both activities on food and fuel security, for example, are all issues with direct consequences for Scotland and the UK.

In this special Scotland's Future Series recording, host Stephen Gethins speaks to the convener and deputy convener of the Scottish Parliament committee on the Constitution, External Affairs, Europe and Culture, during their visit to the University. The discussion with Clare Adamson MSP and Donald Cameron MSP included talking about the committee's most recent Inquiry into the Scottish Government's International Work as well as Scotland's place in the world and what ‘soft' powers can be used to promote Scotland ‘the brand'. The recording followed two meetings held at the University earlier in the day – one with staff from the School of International Relations and one with a group of students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, including students from Ukraine, Germany, Romania, the US, and Scotland. These discussions were, according to both Clare and Donald, very helpful to the committee and they said it was interesting to hear the students in particular talk about how they see Scotland on the international stage, the importance of the Scottish diaspora in building links across the globe, as well as the value of cultural exchanges where international students can learn more about Scotland while they are here and take this knowledge with them. Participants in the podcast also discussed the significance of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs in promoting Scotland as a centre of political knowledge and insight, St Andrews' role in this, and the importance of providing a forum for wider debate on issues including the High North, particularly in relation to defence and security in Europe, as well as the development and encouragement of feminist foreign policy.

Consciousness is a slippery thing and hard to define. We are not talking about medical ‘levels of consciousness' but the actual phenomenon of what it is to be a conscious person. Descartes famously proposed a dualism where the mind is a distinct ‘substance' from the body, even if intimately interacting with it. Indeed, since Descartes philosophers have struggled to explain how something purely physical could have free-will, emotions, sensations and personhood. This webinar hopes to discuss what this means for Christian clinicians who know that we, and our patients, are more than just bodies but are also souls. Dr Antony Latham Dr Antony is a retired GP, originally from Dublin, now living on the Isle of Harris in Scotland. He has worked in Kenya and then, with his family, as a missionary in Tanzania prior to general practice in the Western Isles of Scotland. He has had an interest in philosophy of mind and consciousness for many years and wrote a book on this subject: ‘The Enigma of Consciousness. Reclaiming the Soul'. He has an MA in Bioethics and Medical Law and chairs the Scottish Council on Human Bioethics.

I set myself a challenge - to make a podcast during a trip to Shetland and Orkney rather than go back to recordings from last year like my last 6 podcasts - and I've done it! My podcast series subtitle is "Fascinating Conversations and Traditional Music". There's very seldom a week goes by when I don't come into contact with some traditional music. But last week in Shetland I was particularly lucky to find some AMAZING musc - there was a Shetland Showcase in the community centre, featuring the long-established Shetland Fiddlers Society (established in 1960 by Aly Bain), and a fabulous young fiddler, Amber Thompson - to hear her play you'd never believe she's only twelve. And I LOVE her teacher Eunice Henderson's piano accompaniment that's so typical of Shetland fiddling, a style I first heard with Violet Tulloch accompanying Aly Bain on the 1978 Topic "Shetland Folk Fiddling" record.
