It's being argued that Ennis has failed to deal with parking deficits. Following a motion he raised in November 2023 which found that Ennis had lost 159 car parking spaces in fifteen years, Clarecastle Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan has this week requested an update on any further losses. Ennis MD has said in a response that while some spaces have been lost to public realm works, Active Travel measures and Safe Routes to School projects, the new Cloister Car Park and Lidl store on the Clare Road will soon bring almost 350 spaces on stream. Councillor O'Callaghan claims no efforts have been made to fix the previously identified parking space shortfall.

It's claimed Clare's not getting bang for its buck on active travel projects due to a "frustrating" overspend on consultants. New figures obtained by Clare FM show the council has spent €2.4M on outside expertise to help design for greenways, pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes in the past five years, with over €1m alone going to the West Clare Greenway. This is despite €550,000 been allocated in government grants to Clare County Council's internal active travel office in the last two years. Inagh-based Deputy Leader of the Green Party Roisín Garvey has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan she believes the process could be much more efficient.

UK's BEST Walking Holidays - Self Guided Hiking Vacations Walk the charming countryside of England, Scotland or Wales in the United Kingdom on one of these fantastic long distance paths! Your holiday will be self-guided, so you walk at your own pace on your own timetable, stopping to savor a tea break or grabbing a meal or a pint at the pub. Your luggage is transported to each evening's charming inn, so all you have to carry is your day pack. Breakfast is included, so either stop for lunch or pack a lunch for your walk, and then enjoy a local restaurant in the historic village that is your home for the night. Meet plenty of locals and fellow international walkers on these famous and historic old trading paths. Since they were the original route that folks moved from town to town, they naturally chose the easiest route, so most of today's routes are fairly modest - and remember that they don't have many high mountains in the UK regardless! However, you will need to train so your feet and body are used to walking long distances day after day. Walking holidays have become one of my favorite ways to explore a region. Discover why on today's show. If you are interested in a walking holiday in Europe, I recommend going with my affiliate One Foot Abroad. Unless you've been living under a rock, or become adept at turning off the TV as soon as you hear Question Time's twinkly theme, then you'll be well aware that the next UK general election is fast approaching. And with under two weeks to go until the polling stations open, all of the main parties have launched their manifestos, setting out the key reasons why you should vote for them on 4 July.Which leads us to the big question in this week's special election-themed episode of the road.cc Podcast: What are the parties saying about cycling?Helping him dive headfirst into the key parties' manifestos – and scavenge any scrap of detail from them about active travel (which was more difficult than you might think) – Ryan was joined by road.cc stalwart Simon MacMichael and Sarah McMonagle, director of external affairs at Cycling UK.With Cycling UK launching its own five-year plan for active travel recently – which has called on whichever party takes the keys next month to No. 10 to boost cycling funding considerably and reconsider how our cities, towns, and neighbourhoods are planned – Sarah, Ryan, and Simon dissect the good, bad, ugly, and frankly non-existent of the different parties' pledges related to getting about by bike.

8 Day Boat and Bike Tour of Provence - Carmargue France Today we head to one of the most beautiful and popular regions of France, yet away from the busy crowds in the south of France. We are heading to Provence and the Camargue region, on an 8 day boat and bike tour where we will visit fortresses and Roman ruins, enjoy local wines and cycle past vineyards, orchards and one of the most important wetlands in the world - all with just unpacking ONCE, since you'll be transported by boat between stops! Birders will see many of the more tha 400 species that visit this area, including the charming flamingos with their comical upside down heads in the marsh as they search for brine shrimp. You'll see the best preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe and explore two of my favorite French towns: Avignon and Arles. As we cycle along the quiet paths, we'll encounter wild horses and Carmargue cattle. We'll explore the landscapes made famous by Van Gogh and Cézanne. Along the way, we stop for coffee in charming villages and depending on the time of year you go, you can smell and see the amazing display of lavender so commonly grown in this stunning region. Today's adventure is one that anyone reasonably fit can do. It's a fantastic holiday where you can be active but not have to worry except about whether to indulge in another pastry or glass. But since you HAVE been active - GO FOR IT:) COMPLETE SHOW NOTES See important links for planning your adventure, photos, videos and more cool info about today's show. For episode 78 of the road.cc Podcast, we donned our reading glasses, grabbed our bikes, and headed over to the National Cycle Network, that underfunded, unwieldy, often fractured, but very important collection of routes used by cyclists across the UK and which forms the subject of Laura Laker's brilliant new book, Potholes and Pavements. Part one features an in-depth behind the keyboard chat with Laura, a respected journalist and longstanding road.cc contributor, discussing her inspiration for the book, the pros and cons of the NCN, how to make cycling infrastructure better, the cycling culture wars, and why riding a bike is really all about the people we meet along the way.We then turn our attentions in part two to the upcoming general election, and what its outcome may mean for cycling and active travel, with Dr Maya Singer Hobbs, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research, a think tank that earlier this month claimed the UK was “travelling in the wrong direction” when it comes to transport.
Guided Costa Rica Camino with Homestays and Daily Luggage Transfer PART II: Join us as we continue our 175 mile/280 km Costa Rica Camino where, over 16 days, you walk from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean, across the entire country (indeed the continent and over the continental divide!). You'll experience an array of ecosystems and see wildlife and fauna in one of the most biodiverse regions of the world. The hike is fully guided and includes all meals and daily luggage transfer. When I went, I did a combination of small lodges and camping. Our guest Laurie and her husband opted for a private tour for the two of them and they stayed in homestays, for a completely different experience than the one I covered last year. Less than 1000 hikers have completed the Costa Rica Camino as of this recording! Learn all about it on the show and on the website and Travel Planner. I recommend going with my affiliate, UrriTrek. Patagonia Part I: Hike the W Trek in Argentina Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the ‘Most Beautiful Places' I've seen (and I've been to 50 countries and all seven continents). The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun. Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description. In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake. You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake. On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier. We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate. In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. A North Clare Government senator is predicting this county will have the best Greenways in Ireland thanks to a major funding boost. Transport Infrastructure Ireland has granted over €6 million in funding for national roads, greenways and Active Travel schemes in Clare as part of a €440 million nationwide investment. Among the projects to receive funding here are the West Clare Railway, which has received an allocation of €800,000, the Ennis to Ennistymon Greenway, for which €650,000 in additional funding has been provided and the much-anticipated Limerick to Scariff Greenway, which is to receive €300,000. Inagh Green Party Senator believes the benefits of these Greenways will extend far beyond tourism.
Shane Timmons, senior research officer at the ESRI looks at the academic research on active travel both in Ireland and around the globe.

That's according to new research from the ESRI on Active Travel Schemes We speak to Martina Callanan, Member of the Irish Cycling Campaign and Deputy Chair of the Galway Cycling Campaign.

I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Robert Fletcher and have him share his experiences of cycling from Alaska to Argentina as a 81 year old! Robert came up with the idea of Octo Odyssey as a way of celebrating turning 80. His original idea was to cycle from the North Pole, Alaska to Panama City where he would set a world record. He successfully did this - setting the record for the longest continuous journey undertaken on an electric bicycle. But Robert didn't want his trip to end there. He waited out the colder winter months and then set off to continue the journey all the way to Ushuaia, Argentina. A total distance of over 26,500kms! He believes he is the oldest person to have completed this journey. Quite an incredible effort.Robert shared a lot of his past experiences of his travel adventures - from his early cycle touring trips where navigation devices and the age of the internet were not in existence - to his previous trip from Alaska to Central America. His advice for others considering doing a trip like this in their older age - Just do it!Listening to this episode is sure to inspire you and fill you with a sense of wanderlust for adventure.Be sure to follow Robert via the links below to keep an eye out on his future adventures.Website - www.octooydssey.comFacebook - Octogenarian OdysseyInstagram - @OctoOdysseyBook - Octogenarian Odyssey. In the second of a two-part mini-series on online disinformation Laura, Ned and Adam talk to Shayoni Lynn, whose company specialises in the behavioural science of mis- and disinformation, and how to tackle it. After ministers admitted this autumn making decisions based on ‘online discussions' that veered towards fringe conspiracy theories, around things like 15-minute cities, and as the climate conference COP28 approaches, our guest has some timely insight into the world of disinformation. Shayoni Lynn is founder of Lynn Group, a ‘communications consultancy, powered by behavioural science'. They specialise in helping organisations avoid their work being the subject of disinformation, including those involved in vaccine rollout and mental health services. She authored an article on why sometimes, engaging with disinformation online is the last thing we should be doing, and explains to Streets Ahead other ways of ensuring measures to improve our health and reduce our impact on the environment, aren't foundered by falsehoods.Lynn Global has worked with the Welsh government on the rollout of default 20mph speed limits in built-up areas, the biggest policy the Senedd has enacted so far, and one not without its share of disinformation. Shayoni Lynn explains how our very nature as humans make us susceptible to misinformation and what we can do about it as individuals, as organisations and as nations. This blog discusses why sometimes, engaging with disinformation online is the last thing you want to do: https://lynn.global/the-dangers-of-debating-misinformation/ We're on Twitter and welcome your feedback on our episode: http://www.twitter.com/podstreetsaheadIf you're reading this, please can you take 1 minute to give us a rating and write a review? Disinformation is seeping from social media into public debate, and even politicians are being sucked in - with real-world consequences for democracy. From 15-minute cities, to ULEZ, active travel has found itself on the frontline of the battle for truth - but what is actually happening, and how does it affect us?In the first of a two-part miniseries on the topic, Adam, Ned and Laura talk to Amil Khan, founder of Valent, a company that “deals with disinformation by understanding who is behind it, what methods they use and who they seek to manipulate”. Amil Khan was a Reuters and BBC journalist who first encountered disinformation campaigns around the Arab Spring in the 2010s. He began investigating the topic for Chatham House and the government and, in 2020, with a government COVID loan, he founded his own company, Valent. There, he and his team investigates the mechanics of disinformation, including on social media platforms.Amil says the company is ‘content agnostic' - but as well as paid projects it investigates topics of interest to staff… which led to an investigation into anti-ULEZ sentiment online. What it found was one of the most advanced manipulation efforts they have seen in nearly four years of examining such activity in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. An estimated £168,000 had been spent, via ‘spreader accounts' amplifying genuine anti-ULEZ voices. While against social media company rules, this automated manipulation happens, thanks to a number of companies selling such services under vaguely concealed euphemisms.Amil talks us through the mechanics of dis- and misinformation online, how it happens, how to tackle it, and the consequences for active travel, and indeed democracy. We're on Twitter and welcome your feedback on our episode: http://www.twitter.com/podstreetsaheadIf you're reading this, please can you take 1 minute to give us a rating and write a review? In this episode of the Seek Travel Ride podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Brideau. Michelle started including cycle commuting into her daily routine, as a way of harnessing the health benefits of active travel. This soon sparked a passion for cycling which wouldn't just see her commuting from home to work, but also setting off on a bicycle tour across Canada - from Vancouver to Halifax. Since that trip Michelle has enjoyed the challenges which come with Audax riding, and also regularly incorporates lightweight cycle touring trips into her life where possible. It's her advocacy work which really shines through, where she continues to promote the benefits of active travel via Social Media and her online star - One Less Car. I really enjoyed speaking with Michelle during this episode, and finding out more about how she re-ignited her love for cycling as an adult, and how she went from cycle commuting daily in London, to cycling across Canada - one of the biggest countries in the world. After cycling across Canada, Michelle discovered the world of Audax riding by signing up for the Vatternrundan ride in Sweden. This then set of the idea of going for the Audax challenge of a which is that of a Super Randonneur. This involves riding distances of 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km in a single calendar year. If you are curious about this part of cycling then I encourage you to listen to Michelle's experiences of how she trained for these distances and made what many would think is unachievable, possible. One thing that was really clear during my discussions with Michelle is how passionate she is about helping others who are just starting out into the world of active travel. She reminds us all of how daunting it can be to cycle in a city as an adult, and she shared many tips about how people can overcome those nerves and incorporate active travel into their daily routine.
