What is Barny Shergold good at? Hmm...well, lots of things. Barny has been developing software for over 30 years, dabbling in a bunch of different coding languages and, of course, developing without proper frameworks and foundations. Barny discovered Magento in about 2010 when he got a job at an agency that was really excited about the up-and-coming platform. His job was basically to make it useful for their clients. Throughout the past 10 years, he's shifted his focus a bit to helping developers get things right in the first place, before they write code and build processes that won't age well. Sound familiar? -- SHOW NOTES (full notes at SwiftOtter.com)   After 30 years in software development, he sees a clear connection between the developer's ability to clearly communicate progress and technical specifics to non-technical parties and the ability for a developer to reach their highest potential.   Joseph posted a tip on LinkedIn a couple months before the filming of this podcast that stirred the community up quite a bit. It was a reminder that MySQL does not handle NULL values in the same way that PHP interprets them, and that devs need to be careful how they use NULL. Barny and Joseph explore this issue and share advice.   A challenge for developers and how well they understand database structures.   A reminder of creative ways to store data in order to make our lives easier down the road.   A suggestion for how to counsel merchants when they're thinking about a platform change. It's definitely not an easy conversation.   A challenge to leave notes in your code. Like Barny said, “I understood every word you just said, but I didn't understand the sentence”. -- Connect with Barny Shergold on Social:   LinkedIn   Connect with Joseph Maxwell on Social:   LinkedIn   Twitter   YOU have an incredible debugging story to share? This week's NEW podcast episode is with the wonderful Hannah Shergold. Winchester artist Hannah Shergold has a fascinating, albeit peculiar back story and is now one of the most successful self-representing artists in the UK. Since leaving the Armed Forces in April 2018 Hannah has hosted two solo exhibitions on London’s Pall Mall and within 15 months raised over £120,000 for charity through the sale of her artwork. She recently partnered with Prince William’s conservation charity Tusk with a fundraising target of £75,000. But despite her success, Hannah has taken a less conventional route to reach it. She graduated from Cambridge University in 2006 having studied pre-clinical Veterinary Medicine. After three years as a bronze sculptor, she joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and commissioned into the Army Air Corps. Following a ground tour of Afghanistan with the infantry she qualified as a Lynx helicopter pilot and has served all over the world including Germany, Canada and Kenya. In 2015 Hannah was deployed to Kenya to conduct medical evacuation duties. Often based in austere locations in the remote northern deserts, she flew multiple casualties with life-threatening conditions to medical facilities in Nairobi. Having experimented with painting whilst on standby Hannah’s work quickly drew a following, and since her return to the UK in 2016 Hannah has featured on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, in the Financial Times “How To Spend It”, Mayfair Times, Luxury London magazine, and was listed as one of the top 10 “Women to Watch in the Arts” by About Time magazine. I am so excited to share this fascinating episode with you, and can't wait to hear what you think!

Professor Peter Shergold: Re-imagining Public Service

The vocation of public service remains a cornerstone of Australian democracy. Yet its traditional virtues are under pressure. Too often exciting innovations have remained at the periphery, failing to deliver on their promise. New approaches to the designing, commissioning and funding of government services have yet to transform the centre of public administration. Bureaucratic structures, regulatory compliance systems and a culture of risk aversion have narrowed the manner in which public accountability and stewardship have been perceived. Yet, with political authority, governance can become more participatory and inclusive. Businesses, social enterprises and research institutions can partner with government agencies to become co-producers of public benefit. Sectoral boundaries can become porous and relationships collaborative. A new public service can emerge, based upon principles of flexibility, experimentation, facilitative leadership and organisational agility. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Professor Peter Shergold AC is Chancellor of Western Sydney University. He has had a distinguished career in the Australian Public Service. Peter headed a range of Commonwealth agencies and was Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet for five years from 2003. He now has a portfolio career serving on the Boards of AMP, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and QuintessenceLabs. He chairs Opal Aged Care. He remains active in public administration, having been appointed as the Coordinator General of Refugee Resettlement in NSW. In the tertiary education arena he chairs both the National Centre for Vocational Education Research and the Higher Education Standards Panel.
