Some of the world's most valuable vineyard lessons are rooted in vines that predate modern viticulture. In this conversation, we are joined by Dr. Laura Catena to explore Argentina's remarkable legacy of old, ungrafted vines and what they reveal about vine genetics, site expression, and long-term resilience. Drawing on her experience, Dr. Catena explains why phylloxera never devastated many Argentine vineyards and how this unique history allowed ancient vine material to survive. The discussion dives into massale selection from old vines, highlighting why genetic diversity matters — especially as vineyard owners contend with climate stress, disease pressure, and the limits of clonal uniformity. We also examine the role of Argentina's high-altitude growing regions and how elevation influences vine physiology, flavor development, and vineyard health. These extreme sites have become a living laboratory for research, helping match plant material to specific conditions and improving long-term vineyard performance. Dr. Catena shares information from the Catena Institute of Wine's ongoing research and how data-driven approaches can elevate both vineyard decisions and wine quality. For growers managing heritage blocks or considering massale selection in new plantings, this episode offers a compelling blend of history, science, and practical guidance — showing how preserving the past can be a powerful strategy for building the vineyards of the future. In this episode, you will hear: Why Argentina has some of the world's oldest ungrafted vineyards The role of massale selection in preserving genetic diversity How old vines contribute to resilience and site expression The impact of altitude and climate on vine health and quality Applying research-driven insights to modern vineyard management Follow and Review: If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to follow the podcast and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!

What if everything you've been told about alcohol and health is wrong—or at least incomplete? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Laura Catena, a Harvard and Stanford-educated physician and fourth-generation vintner behind Argentina's legendary Catena Zapata. As the driving force behind the 'In Defense of Wine' campaign, Dr. Catena is not here to tell you that wine is a miracle cure—she's here to cut through the noise and present what peer-reviewed science actually says about moderate alcohol consumption.Dr. Catena believes the current conversation around alcohol and health has veered away from accurate science, reduced to oversimplified headlines that ignore nuance. She walks us through two landmark reports—one from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and another from the American Heart Association—that challenge the prevailing black-and-white narratives. These aren't studies cherry-picked to support the wine industry; they're comprehensive reviews that acknowledge both the potential benefits and real risks of alcohol consumption. In this episode we discover what moderation actually mean? We explore the breaking research on wine and health, but we also zoom out to examine the larger picture: the undeniable dangers of smoking, the rapid rise of weight loss drugs and cannabis, and how industrialization and processed foods have fundamentally reshaped both what we consume and our overall health. Dr. Catena argues that informed decision-making requires understanding the full spectrum of evidence—not just the parts that fit a particular narrative.Whether you're a wine lover, a health enthusiast, or simply someone trying to make sense of conflicting headlines, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective grounded in science, context, and honesty. To find out more about Dr Laura Catena's In Defense of Wine Campaign, you can visit her official website here: In Defense of Wine and watch her informative YouTube video here: Wine & Health by Dr. Laura CatenaResearch Papers and Insights Discussed:NASEM report and the American Heart Association's review.Ozempic Curbs Drinking—So What Does That Mean for the Alcohol Industry? | SevenFifty Daily This episode was brought to life by the exceptional writing of the talented Rachael Mamane, a James Beard-nominated author and culinary researcher. At the heart of The Prophets' vision are “The 24 Essential Supply Chain Processes.” What are they? Find out, and see the future yourself. Click here “Just tell us why you're making changes.” That simple request from a Tier 2 supplier at an AIAG conference says everything about where the automotive supply chain still struggles. The supply base still faces a lack of basic communication. Data is also slow to move, locked in outdated systems, or scattered across formats. Catena-X aims to address these issues. In this episode, Jan Griffiths, Jim Liegghio, and Terry Onica sit down with Kevin Piotrowski, Chief Transformation Officer at AIAG, to talk about what Catena-X really is and what it means for the future of the automotive supply chain.Kevin explains what Catena-X does. It's a network that allows companies to share complex data across the entire supply chain, up and down multiple tiers. Catena-X is encrypted, controlled, and designed to enable suppliers and customers to decide who sees what. It's not your usual point-to-point system; it's built for multi-tier collaboration. The group gets into real examples. One supplier used Catena-X to calculate carbon footprint using actual data instead of averages and found a 46% drop in reported emissions. And no, Catena-X isn't replacing EDI. Kevin clarifies that EDI still works well for structured transactions like shipment notices. Catena-X handles everything that doesn't fit neatly into that box—data that needs to be shared for visibility, not stored or processed. They also talk about supplier overload, where small raw materials suppliers get hit with hundreds of requests for the same information. Catena-X could solve that by allowing assessments and surveys to be shared once, securely, across customers. This isn't just a European project. It's a global standard, and AIAG is helping drive its rollout in North America. OEMs, suppliers, and solution providers are already getting involved, with pilot projects and certifications underway. The episode closes with a message to listeners: this is just the start. There's more to cover, and the team wants to hear your questions. If you want to know something about Catena-X, now's the time to ask.Themes discussed in this episode:The need to fix basic communication gaps in the automotive supply chainHow Catena-X enables secure, multi-tier data sharing across suppliers and OEMsThe importance of real-time data in automotive supply chainsWhy traditional data systems can't keep up with today's global supply chainsThe difference between structured EDI and Catena-X's complex data exchangeHow Catena-X helps contain quality issues before they become costly recallsThe critical role of encrypted, permission-based access in protecting supply chain IPWhat tech providers need to know about Catena-X certification and readinessFeatured on this episode:Name: Kevin PiotrowskiTitle: Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) at Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG)About: Kevin serves as Chief Transformation Officer at AIAG, where he leads enterprise-wide transformation for the world's largest global automotive association.  Dr. Laura Catena reacts to AHA's statement on alcohol and cardiac health and the possibility of USDA Dietary Guidelines dropping alcohol consumption guidance.Given the recent news that the USDA may drop the current recommendation of one alcoholic drink per day for women and two alcoholic drinks per day for men in the soon to be released update of the USDA dietary guidelines, and the American Heart Association's new statement that alcohol may have no to little impact or could even be beneficial on heart health, we are fortunate to have just the right person to respond to this and sort it all out for us.We welcome vintner and physician Dr. Laura Catena back to the podcast. With her unique dual background in medicine and winemaking, Catena shares her researched perspective, emphasizing the importance of scientific integrity, the value of moderate wine consumption in historical health data, and the need for ongoing research free from bias. She challenges the absolutist messaging that no amount of alcohol is safe, and urges a more balanced, evidence-based conversation.

In terms of individual lives saved, you could argue that there is no other person on the front lines doing more than Tom. Additionally, we explore the manner in which the Nuba people die, which is in striking contrast to the ubiquity of chronic disease and self-harm in the West, despite the extreme poverty and unimaginable suffering experienced by the Nuba people. Lastly, we discuss the lessons to be gleaned from the Nuba people, who, despite their suffering, live so harmoniously, happily, and resiliently. We discuss: Background, medical training, and early days of missionary work in Africa [5:15]; Tom arrives at Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, civil war breaks out, and his staff evacuates [12:30]; Learning surgery on the job and earning the trust of the community [37:00]; The amazing people of Nuba, and why Nuba feels like home to Tom [47:45]; NY Times article about Tom's work, and Tom's new venture on the board of the Aurora Prize Foundation, raising awareness and funds for other missionaries [59:45]; Tom's mind-blowing ability to deal with chaos while seeing hundreds of patients per day [1:12:00]; The most afraid Tom has ever been, and how he copes with the emotional trauma of his daily experiences [1:19:45]; The basic tools, technologies, and medicines that Tom is lacking that could save many lives [1:30:00]; The logistical challenge of helping Tom's hospital, and what Tom really needs [1:35:15]; Diseases in the adult population [1:38:30]; Living without possessions, finding meaning, and being a missionary [1:55:45]; Happiness, sense of purpose, and suicide: contrasting the US with Nuba [2:07:15]; Other than donations, is there a way people can help Tom and other similar causes?
