In the mid 1980s, Ricky Skaggs and Steve Wariner were frequently seen on television playing eye-catching Tele-looking instruments equipped with B-Benders, in vibrant colors, with beautiful flame maple necks. Though I had no idea what they were, I wanted one. I finally found the answer in the January 1987 issue of Guitar Player magazine, where it was revealed that these were custom instruments built by Nashville luthier, Joe Glaser, equipped with Seymour Duncan pickups, and his patented string bender. When I started gigging in the early 90s, I began saving my money, and once I had a respectable amount saved up, I called Glaser, only to find that he had ceased building guitars, and was instead concentrating on repairs, and his string bender business. I continued to search for one, but they seemingly never came up for sale. Recently, some of Joe's crew raided the shop attic, and they began using some leftover Glaser guitar parts to build out a handful of instruments. Today, we look at the last Glaser Bender guitar, and how I ended up with it after 35-years of searching. We also do a deep-dive on the Seymour Duncan 53-Tapped Tele set, and the Music City Bridge Wiring, plus clips with the guys that worked on the guitar, and Joe Glaser explaining his preference for single-bound Tele bodies, and figured maple necks. The pickupshttps://customshop.seymourduncan.com/53-tapped-tele/https://www.seymourduncan.com/single-product/hot-stack-stratGet on the list for a Glaser Convertible Bender installationhttps://www.glaserbender.com/scheduling-and-optionsPlaylisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SZpvTAXnsVbdDB6TSrFMv?si=42f8c409f9af4bd7Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/NYXL Strings Amazon Linkhttps://amzn.to/3Yo5hprTo Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch  - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/#askzac #glaserbender #seymourduncanTexas ToastThe #1 Country Music Podcast in Texas!Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

Unveiling The Mystery Mods Who Really Built Andy Summers Iconic Telecaster 9/19/24

https://youtube.com/live/WS3zqWi2Iq4 Andy Summers' heavily modified Telecaster, a cornerstone of The Police's early sound, remains a mystery. In 1972, while teaching in California, Summers bought the guitar from a student. Already well-worn, it featured a humbucker in the neck, a phase switch, and an active boost controlled by a third knob. Though Summers only recalls adding Schaller tuners, much of the guitar's history is uncertain. While Summers identifies it as a 1961 model, others suggest it could be a 1963 Telecaster Custom, possibly with a 1950s neck given its maple fretboard, though this is debated. The Telecaster became central to The Police's unique sound, but it wasn't until 2006 that Fender decided to reproduce it. Summers had originally approached Fender about building a Strat with a Steinberger TransTrem, but the guitar giant received so many requests for his Telecaster that they instead launched a limited run of 250 Tribute models in 2007, priced at £9,399. The release coincided with The Police's reunion and Summers' autobiography One Train Later. One of the Tribute models recently resurfaced for sale at nearly double its original price. To create the Tribute series, Fender's master builder Dennis Galuszka closely examined Summers' original guitar. Despite this, the guitar's true origins remained elusive. No identifying dates were found on the neck or body, and Galuszka speculated that the neck might be from a 1950s Telecaster, based on remnants of white blonde paint. The body had been routed so heavily that no original markings were left. While adding a Gibson humbucker and phase switch was a common mod at the time, the brass bridge and active boost circuit were more unusual. The guitar's secret weapon was its active boost, controlled by a mini-toggle switch near the bridge. Yet the person who installed these mods remains unknown. Despite The Police's massive success, no one has come forward to claim credit for the modifications. Summers, too, has never revealed the name of the student who sold him the guitar. Summers (or someone else) continued modifying the guitar after purchasing it. In a 1978 performance, the Tele still had its original three-saddle bridge, but by late that year, Summers had replaced it with a six-saddle bridge. The bridge pickup was also direct-mounted to the body, likely due to routing required for the brass bridge plate. Photos show a crack in the plate between the pickup and control plate, which Summers left unaddressed. The guitar's pickups also remain a puzzle. Fender's team found that a Seymour Duncan '59 humbucker closely resembled the neck pickup, while the bridge pickup seemed custom-made. The active boost circuit, added before Summers bought the guitar in 1972, required routing to fit a nine-volt battery, which was uncommon for the early '70s. The Tribute model replicated this feature using a modified Eric Clapton mid-boost circuit since the original was no longer functional. Despite its iconic status, the Telecaster has only been reproduced in limited numbers. Guitars with humbuckers or phase switches are common, but the active boost remains rare due to the substantial modifications needed to fit it into a Telecaster's small control cavity. It's intriguing that, for such a well-known instrument, no mass-market model has ever been made, and that the person responsible for its groundbreaking mods remains anonymous. Summers' heavily modified Telecaster played a vital role in shaping the sound of The Police and became one of the most unique instruments in rock history. It's remarkable that such an influential guitar was modded by an unknown individual whose work helped define a band that sold millions of records. Hopefully, one day, the person responsible for these now-legendary modifications will get the credit they deserve.

There have been other pedals released with Germanium components within and this also sparks some conversation. Those pioneers of pedal perfection, Electro Harmonix, have released a new POG. It looks insanely good so the guys talk about it and Richard makes a terrible Dad joke. Blake has a new vintage Gibson guitar acquisition and the guys dig in and discuss some of the electronic quirks and features. Richard wants a new guitar but he has a problem and tells us all about it. Aerosmith have announced the end of their touring career and this almost provokes a sensible discussion. Richard admits his awe for Hendrix. Brian has a proud Dad moment when one of his children makes a music based confession and it has made him very happy. This morphs into a conversation about the pull of music and how people have different emotional levels of involvement with it. NFOTUSA Soldiers Speak Radio

Join us this week as we welcome Country Rock music singer songwriter, Mark Mackay. A blazing guitarist, an evocative vocalist and a songwriter steeped in authenticity: At the crossroads of country music and rock and roll is where Mark makes his stand. Fronting a powerhouse band, he rocks the room with rowdy charm and persuasive conviction. Within the last year has opened for country stars like Frankie Ballard, Eli Young Band, Cole Swindell, Tracy Lawrence and Old Dominion, plus legendary rockers The Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Orianthi. Playing over 230 shows last year, earned him a well-deserved slot on Music Connection’s “Top 100 National Live Acts.” Mackay just released his debut album on May 1, 2017, appropriately titled Trials & Tribulations, of which he either wrote or co-wrote every track on the record. As Mackay is always touring throughout the year, this earned him early supporters through sponsorships via Schecter Guitars, D’Addario, Seymour Duncan, Deering, and Red Bull. We will talk to Mark about his upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at his music, feature his latest songs, and ask him to share his message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Mark Mackay at http://www.markmackayofficial.net/ and spread the word. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Seymour W. Duncan is an American guitarist and guitar repairman and a co-founder of the Seymour Duncan Company, a manufacturer of guitar pickups, bass pickups, and effects pedals located in Santa Barbara, California. Born in New Jersey, Duncan grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, during a time when electric guitar music grew into greater acceptance. Duncan began playing clubs and during one show, his Fender Telecaster's lead pickup broke, forcing him to play the rest of the night on the rhythm pickup. Necessity being the mother of invention, Duncan rewound that lead pickup on a record player spinning at 33 1⁄3 rpm.While he developed his playing skills, Duncan's knowledge of how guitars work grew. Duncan took every chance he had to talk with players about guitars, tone and electronics. After spending time with musicians such as Les Paul and Roy Buchanan, Duncan realized that it was his guitar, and not his playing, that prevented him from producing those wonderful tones that defined great players. Suddenly, and forever, Duncan was hooked on the dynamics and character differences of pickups. As Duncan tinkered with materials and techniques, his bag of tricks grew and grew. At Les Paul's suggestion, he moved to England in the late 1960s where his intention to play soon mixed with the opportunity to further his pickup research working in the Repair and R&D Departments at the Fender Soundhouse in London. It was here that he did repairs and rewinds for such artists as Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton and his guitar hero Jeff Beck. It was through his work with Beck in particular, that Duncan honed his pickup winding skills—some of Duncan's first signature pickup tones appear on Beck's early solo albums. Duncan's sabbatical in England resulted in a flock of new fans and friends.[2] Duncan came back to the United States and eventually settled in California. He established contact with people such as Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover (inventor of a humbucking pickup) and continued learning about and making pickups. Demand for his custom pickups grew and in late 1978 together with Cathy Carter Duncan, he started his own company, Seymour Duncan Pickups. Today the company has over 120 employees.Fender Custom Shop makes a Seymour Duncan Signature Esquire. Duncan is still involved in designing and fabricating pickups at the factory as well as playing guitar and making appearances at clinics and conventions.http://www.seymourduncan.com/

Janet Robin Biography “Working with Janet was an unforgettable experience. She followed her spirit – no limits. Janet’s love for her art is evident in her impassioned musicianship and inspired songwriting. The music we created together, vibrant and full of energy, encapsulates all that she is.”-John Carter Cash (Producer, owner Cash Cabin Studios) “From Randy Rhoads to Precious Metal, Lindsey Buckingham to John Carter Cash and all points in between – like a stint working with Meredith Brooks, opening for Midge Ure or appearing with Monte Montgomery – the ongoing tale of singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Robin is a fascinating journey.” – Pollstar Janet Robin can be defined in a single word: musician. Many people attempt to make music, but few earn that illustrious title. Those in this business reserve that label for the rare individuals who consistently demonstrate a high level of talent, perseverance, taste and sensitivity over a period of time. To these people making music is not simply a pastime; it is a matter of blood and guts. That a serious addiction to making music runs through Robin’s veins is made clear from a quick review of her career. A Southern California native, Robin’s musical education began the moment she met her guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne). Under Rhoads’ tutelage, Robin became an ace six-string player and, while still in high school, parlayed this education into a position as the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. Discovered by Rodney Bingenheimer of the legendary L.A. rock radio station KROQ, Precious Metal was soon signed to Polygram Records. Later moving to Chameleon/Capitol Records, Precious Metal released several albums, wrote with Heart, Poison and Cheap Trick, toured extensively and gained accolades from both fans and critics alike. Following the demise of Precious Metal, Robin joined Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham’s band in support of his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle (Reprise Records). A consummate pro, working with Buckingham profoundly influenced Robin’s guitar playing, singing and songwriting, as well as her general approach to the music business. This new direction led to Robin’s 1998 debut solo album, Open the Door. Released on her own label, Little Sister Records, Buzz Weekly described the CD as “smart, savvy, fuzzy, hooky pop.” She has seen songs from this album featured in film and television; most notably on the then popular T.V. show Felicity. Ever the road warrior, she supported the disc by opening for such acts as Heart, Colin Hay, Loudon Wainwright III and the Smithereens, steadily building a wide fan base. Robin has since continued to tour heavily and averages as many as 150 dates per year. Encouraged by the warm reception of her debut, Robin released three more albums on Little Sister including the acoustic After the Flood which was recorded in Laurel Canyon and features “Beautiful Freak” which has since become a fan favorite and one of Robin’s defining songs. Also among these records is 2007’s Days of Summer. Recorded with producers David Bianco (Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, Mick Jagger) and Steve Baughman (Eminem, 50 Cent), this acoustic based EP is the work of an artist willing and able to explore the poignant emotional states of adulthood while avoiding the stereotypes brought on by most acoustic singer-songwriters. Working on the album was an experience that greatly affected her style and led Robin to many new and exciting opportunities including multiple tours in Europe. 2012 here in the USA, saw Robin release her album Everything Has Changed that bridges the gap between passionate acoustic music and gutsy rock n’ roll. With the help of her dedicated fan base, Robin was able to raise the funds ($20,000) for that studio effort. The loyal support enabled her to team up with producer John Carter Cash (Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at Cash Cabin Studios outside of Nashville. The son of Johnny and June, Carter Cash was a producer on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and produced several records with his father as well as a Grammy Award winning record for June. Built by Johnny in 1979, this studio is where the country legend recorded much of his later work including his final recording, American V: A Hundred Highways, which was released posthumously and co-produced by Rick Rubin and John Carter. Robin had previously released “Everything Has Changed,” in Europe, with Hypertension Music based in Hamburg, Germany. Coupled with the strength of her growing European following and introduced to the German based label by friend and frequent touring partner Colin Hay (Men At Work), Robin signed a licensing and distribution deal with Hypertension for a Winter 2010 European release of Everything Has Changed. The company also did the booking for Robin throughout Europe and after the initial release in Europe, she secured a January 2010 tour with Midge Ure (Ultravox – co-organizer of Live Aid, Band Aid and Live 8). Janet enjoyed the experience of working with Cash so much that she returned this 2016 to record her latest studio effort "Take me as I am" again with John Carter Cash as executive producer and Chuck Turner producing and engineering: "We have talked at great length about this project and he understands my desire and vision to record an album that is representative of the energy brought out in my live performances," Robin says of John Carter Cash. "It’s just great to work with a producer that lets me be myself, yet brings out the best in my work. There weren’t many restraints working with John and the vibe and history at Cash Cabin is overwhelmingly inspiring. John seems to "get me." The official release for "Take me as I am" in the USA will be Oct. 17th, 2016 and the European/UK one will be in January 2017. She has since had several successful headlining tours in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, UK, and France where she plays solo acoustic shows, and with a her band, to sold out crowds in clubs (200-400 cap venues) and festivals (1,000's) across Europe. Janet recently finished a 34 date whirlwind summer tour in 5 countries in Europe, culminating with a featured solo performance at the renowned "Blues & Jazz Festival" in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. In addition to pursuing her solo career both in the U.S. and abroad, few musicians are able to work with the great variety of artists that Robin has been fortunate enough to be around. Besides the aforementioned Lindsey Buckingham, Robin has toured, performed with, recorded, or written songs with Tommy Emmanuel, Peppino D’Agostino, Meredith Brooks, Monty Montgomery, Michelle Shocked, Maia Sharp, Marcy Levy (co-writer with Eric Clapton on “Lay Down Sally”), Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Garrison Starr, Anne McCue and many more. Her most recent side-woman gig was the touring guitarist of Air Supply in 2009. In 2015, She was featured on the bill for the prestigious "All Star Guitar Night" which features some of the top guitar players in the world, during the LA NAMM convention. Touring nearly 150 dates a year with her own project, she has seen her solo career rise to higher and higher levels each year. Robin has also had songs placed in TV and films such as “One Life to Live,” “All my Children,” “Felicity,” “Free Enterprise,” and many more. She has also recently completed the original score for the short film “Traces” directed by Joseph Culp (actor Robert Culp’s son) and the film was accepted into the prestigious Palm Springs Short Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Awards, in June 2012. In January of 2015, Janet was also hand-picked to coach and consult actress Jennifer Jason Leigh for 2 months on location and in Los Angeles for a special guitar scene in the Quentin Tarantino film, "The Hateful Eight." The actress was nominated for an Academy Award. And in June/July of 2015 she was also hand picked for the guitar position in the musical "Girlfriend" to rave reviews at The Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, California. Along with Janet's busy solo career she has started a side project featuring 4 amazing guitar players- "The String Revolution." Combining 4 guitarists each with their own unique contribution to a "band" sound. They have finished their first release and it was mixed by the prestigious Matt Hyde in London who worked previously with famed guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela. The record was released Oct. 15, 2016 and touring dates to follow. However, one need not base their judgment on Robin solely on those with whom she has been associated. Only a listen to her albums or a ticket to one of her shows will prove the opening claim to be true. For what underlies the Janet Robin labels of singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and road warrior is a single word: musician. "My days are very busy," pickup maker Seymour Duncan says with a laugh. It's no understatement. In addition to running one of the largest pickup companies in the musical instrument industry, Duncan is also serious about photography, the prehistoric art of flint knapping (he's on the board of the Stone Age Institute) and, of course, playing guitar. In addition, he still winds pickups for celebrities and average joes alike. Duncan has just released his first album on iTunes, simply called Seymour. It's an homage to some of his favorite guitarists and musicians over the years. "Whipped Cream" is his take on the tones of Eric Clapton; "Rincon Point" is a surf track; "Ice Pickin'" is for Albert Collins; "Mood for Jeff" is dedicated to Jeff Beck... and so forth. The album came about after Duncan purchased and began experimenting with a Pro Tools rig. When friends in the industry started to hear about his recordings, they sent Duncan additional gear and software. Eventually, with producer Doug Scott, he recorded around 30 tracks. Half of those made it on the 14-track album. "It just turned out really incredible," he says. "It's a very eclectic CD."  In this week's podcast, we hear more from Duncan about the album, his favorite artists over the years, those early days he spent at the Fender Sound House in London working alongside rock stars and more. It's a 45 minute talk with one of the guitar industry's living legends.

So Sky took a year off to regroup and during that time re-evaluated his writing & recording processes, then simplified things, and explored a new approach to the "band" paradigm.  After a trip to China and near fatal incident, Sky unlocked a profound new view of this universe and reconnected to the core of his soul and the artist within him was awakened again. He quickly gathered new equipment and restructured his approach... going back to his roots as a solo electronic musician. Realizing that if he could get out into the public eye he would find kindred spirits, artistic pioneers to join him and strengthen his independent efforts. In less than 6 months a stellar clan of musicians, artists and dancers started to assemble... and thus a new Hipnautica was born. An organic collective, a creative tribe, an ever changing project that has performed over 50+ shows in the first year, and has now hit over 7 different states, with performance troops, short films, music stations, and Djs supporting the effort to present our music... we sit poised on the edge and look towards the future with deep appreciation for all of you that have supported this project. Hipnautica in it's current form reformed in 2006 and represents many years personal, musical, artistic, and spiritual development of the visionary behind this unique project, Sky, the visionary and composer behind the project, was often referred to as the "wizard of oz" has in the last several years become a much more poignant figurehead. Sky embraced electronics at an early age recognizing the power and organic nature of the soundscapes that could be created through synthesis. Based out of Austin TX now he is a world traveler and brings with him these influences into his music and art. Today Hipnautica encompasses and presents the talents of many different musicians, vocalists, performers, dancers, and artists to present unique thematic presentations. "We are a performance chameleon, seamlessly transmigrating genres and styles from our sorted past. We blend dark and somber undertones with mechanical driving beats fusing multiple styles together seamlessly to create a sound which is often distinctly hypnotic. It's been Sky's intention to present the highest quality sound and to sincerely present his soul to the world through vibration, light and shadow and to bring other like minds together. He constantly strives to infuse new concepts and ideally hope to be recognized for creating a unique tone. At times Hipnautica is harsh with pounding beats and other times we passively meander through organic layers creating a profound sound hoping to inspire our audience on multiple levels." Hipnautica was intended to be "collective tribe", unbridled by genre classification to present eclectic performances and music that speaks from to the soul, by incorporating different members for each show affords Sky to create dynamically different presentations while standing firm within his original vision. Not every member will attend every performance due to stylistic choice, available time, but this is by design, to allow freedom of movement. Some performers appreciate and relate to different aspects of this project and thus are compelled and inspired in different ways. Like a musical chameleon we seamlessly weave through a multitude of styles to create an original hybrid sound. Constantly we explore creative process and we ask that you support this aspect of this project first and foremost. We hope that you will relate to some of what we do and perhaps find inspiration from all that we do. We are currently independent fueled by our passion and the financial support of our fans, sponsors, and venues that hire us. We deeply appreciate your support. As artists we will constantly explore new ideas to express ourselves in ways that reflect the personalities of our tribe... we hope you join us on this journey. In 2011, Sky and the love of his life for 20 years parted ways, and as a result Sky moved away from Austin, leaving his friends, his family, and the band behind on a journey to rebuild from the ashes like a phoenix Hipnautica will continue on in new form. Sky now lives in Portland Oregon, and while he has been writing music he says "the losses I faced in 2010-2012 have been a serious challenge to deal with and finding the motivation to rebuild a new group has been difficult. But I'm healthier than I've been in years, things are good again. As an artist since birth, I know our imaginations never leave us, we ebb and flow and the vision of Hipnautica will continue on." The list of credits is too long to list here, but you can watch some of the clips on our TV page (listed above), which includes some pretty wicked RIVETHEAD riffing from That Metal Show. The band has toured from their hometown of Dallas to California and back and has opened for many touring national acts. Having secured endorsement deals from the likes of Randall Amplifiers, Dunlop, Dean Markley, Seymour Duncan, Kahler, and Gallien Kruger, RIVETHEAD has also garnered attention from the industry's best. Several major label bands have expressed their appreciation for the band, having been woken up from their hidden-away green rooms to see the band play live. Live shows include an impressive assortment of moving LEDs, strobes, lasers, black-lights, and fog, automated to the band's live set, creating an arena rock show atmosphere at venues of all sizes. Their attack strategy is to successfully fuse together aggressive and high energy guitar licks and vocals, high-quality and intelligent synth lines, and fully dance-able beats. The end result is a sound that crosses over any perceived genre barriers, embracing and celebrating difference, and uniting the music world in a common cause. Their demands are simple; bring creativity and meaning back to music, stop force-feeding the same five bands to music consumers, and prioritize passion over commercialization potential. A Torque Order live show is a high-energy event that both mesmerizes and surprises the audience. The coordination of their stage presence, lighting, and video effects creates an immersive experience that grabs ahold of you and demands your attention, respect, and praise. A true cross-over musical act, they are able to count fans from every genre of music, and the crowds at the shows are generally eclectic. Their desire to connect on a deeper level with their more rabid fans led to the forming of The Order, a collective of supporters who seek to be actively involved in the project. The Order soon became a heavily utilized resource in their live shows and promotion. We are the raped, abused, neglected, shunned, shadowed; we are all that you have chosen to cast out. You have chosen to make our lives hell - Now we will show you the hell you have created through our eyes. WELCOME TO OUR WORLD OF BRUTALITY, AN EXISTENCE OF ENDLESS SUFFERING!!!!!!!!! Formed in 2008 by Chains (Xavier) and Wraith (TJ), Souless Affection was created as a medium to vent lifetimes of abuse, rape, molestation, neglect, and torment at the hands of a bastard world. With that drive, "Broken Dreams" was written, composed, and recorded in 3 months. The demo was immediate and straight forward sick.  In late 2008 Souless Affection added a new member [EYE] to help incorporate his knowledge of movies, horror and dark atmosphere to its music genes. Helping add depth to an already vicious song line up with chilling samples and phantomatic atmospheres. Ultimately attracting the attention of the German compilation, "Extreme Sündenfall," Souless Affection's "Missing" was featured on Vol.8 of the compilation, securing Souless Affection massive notoriety among hardcore EBM and Industrial fans.  "Epidemic," the full length debut album from Souless Affection, has proven to be unlike anything you have ever heard from a bland genre.  2012 Brought the world Shattered, a concept album bringing Child Abuse and the torment it causes it's victims to the front lines of industrial.  Wraith, having lived through the worst possible crimes imaginable as a child, wanted to shed light on an otherwise taboo subject. The album was met with astounding reviews from Coma Music Magazine(Proclaiming Souless Affection the best group of 2011) and Brutal Resonance.  With some new additions and exploring an even darker side of humanity both musically (w/the help of our newest addition, Kreep) and lyrically is set to unleash a new EP, "SOULLESS," which is due winter of 2012/2013.  Keep an eye out for the brutal live performances of Souless Affection, you will not be disappointed.
