Today we wanted to share an episode from a little while back. We believe that it provides immense value and there are some new listeners, so we wanted to re-post it. On today's episode, Dennis sits down with Retired Santa Monica Officer Cristina Coria. Cristina was born and raised in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in a family of police officers who worked for the Santa Monica Police Department. Coria has been a police officer for almost 14 years. During this time, she has gone through two life-threatening experiences. First, she was nearly crushed to death when she was pinned up against her police car by another vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver. Second, she sustained an almost career-ending injury to her left arm after being shot by a murder suspect during a hostage standoff which occurred on the Santa Monica Pier on July 4, 2000. She sustained severe bone and nerve damage and was initially advised by doctors that she might lose her arm. After extensive reconstructive surgery she was told by doctors that she would never be able to have full use of her arm again nor return back to work. Through dedication, determination, faith and perseverance, she beat the odds and regained use of her arm. In 2000, Cristina was a contestant on the 13th season of Survivor: Cook Island and in 2001, she returned back to work full duty patrolling the streets of Santa Monica. After such hardships, she manages to keep upbeat and continues to have a positive outlook on life. Cristina talks about overcoming adversity, keeping a positive mindset when times are tough and how everything happens for a reason. On today's episode, Dennis talks with USMC Veteran and Texas Law Enforcement Officer, Ann Carrizales. Officer Ann Carrizales began her career in the Military with the United States Marine Corps. In 1997 Ann made history as she became the first female to represent the USMC in amateur boxing. In 1999 she became the U.S. Women's National Champion in her weight division and was ranked #1 in the country. As a Sergeant, Ann attended Leadership Training at the Marine Corps Institute, served as a Criminal Investigator and a Field Training Officer, receiving multiple meritorious awards for superior achievement and performance. In 2010 Ann joined the Stafford Police Department working special assignments such as FTO, Rape Aggression Defense Instructor, Police Trainer and worked as a Crisis Negotiator on the East Fort Bend County Regional SWAT Team. On October 26, 2013, during a vehicle stop, Officer Carrizales found herself in a gunfight for her life. Shot in the face and chest, Ann was not going to quit. She shares her story with us as a role model and inspiration to Law Enforcement Officers throughout the country. Ann has received the LE Purple Heart, the Congressional Badge of Bravery, the IAWP Medal of Valor and many more awards for her heroic acts. Ann goes in depth on her story of being in 2 officer involved shootings, the importance of preparedness, as well as aftermath of being in an officer involved shooting. Chad graduated from Portland State University with a BA in Administration of Justice, with a special emphasis in Terrorism Studies. He began his policing career 1998 where his patrol time was spent in high drug and crime areas on swing and night shifts. It was during this time where Chad subdued and restrained numerous resistant and assaultive offenders that shaped the principles he teaches today. Chad is a trained and certified SWAT operator, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Advanced Officer Survival trainer, Firearms instructor, Field Training Officer and currently serves as a use of force expert for a major metropolitan police department in southern Nevada. He also spent time serving in the Gang Crimes Bureau as a Detective. Since 1999, Chad has been training regularly in Mixed Martial Arts and currently holds the rank of Professor, 3rd degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Chad has consulted with military professionals, high profile security guards, major police departments worldwide which makes him highly qualified in the area of police use of force training. Chad founded C4C Police Jiu Jitsu with the mission to teach BJJ based principles to effectively arrest offenders with little to no injury to both parties. Dennis speaks with Green Beret, Nick Lavery. Nick is an active duty member of The United States Army Special Forces. Commonly known as Green Berets, the Special Forces perform critical missions including direct action, counterinsurgency, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare. In 2013, on Nick's second combat rotation to Afghanistan, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use o f a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to his unit. Refusing a military medical retirement, Nick set his sights on returning to operational status. In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he returned to his Detachment and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full spectrum combat operations. Nick is considered the first Green Beret to return to combat as an above the knee amputee. Nick talks tells his story about that day and what led up to the incident, his recovery process, how he keeps a positive mindset and what motivates him to be a warrior. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Sheriff Camrine Marceno of Lee County, FL. Sheriff Carmine Marceno was elected Lee County's 13th Sheriff on November 3, 2020. He was appointed Sheriff of Lee County in 2018 by then-Governor Rick Scott. Marceno began his law enforcement career in Suffolk County, New York before moving to Southwest Florida where he joined the Collier County Sheriff's Office. While with CCSO, he worked as a Patrol Deputy and was a member of numerous specialty units within the agency. He transitioned to a larger public liaison role in community policing, eventually serving as Executive Officer. He is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. In 2012 he was awarded the Collier County's Distinguished Public Service Award, given to the county's top public servant. Sheriff Marceno joined the Lee County Sheriff's Office in 2013, most recently serving as Undersheriff for more than two years. During that time, Sheriff Marceno assumed supervisory responsibilities for day-to-day operations as a member of Command Staff. Prior to his role as Undersheriff, he was a Captain, serving as the Executive Officer to Sheriff Mike Scott. In March 2017, Sheriff Carmine Marceno graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy Session 267. The intense 10-week program is by invitation-only for law enforcement managers nominated by their agency because of demonstrated leadership. The grueling session includes course study, specialized training and physical challenges. On December 19, 2019, Sheriff Carmine Marceno was awarded the 2019 “Outstanding Law Enforcement Executive” award from the Southwest Florida Police Chiefs Association. Sheriff Carmine Marceno is also a member of the Board of Directors with The Lee County Horizon Council. Sheriff Marceno talks about his journey of his career from New York and transitioning to Florida, standing for Law and Order, dealing with haters his position on proactivity, his thoughts on proper training and doing things the right way to succeed. On this episode, Dennis sits down with retired Deputy Chief and public safety liaison, Bill Mazur, clinical expert in understanding and treating trauma, Larissa Mason and Navy SEAL and CEO and Co-Founder at Protekt, Nick Norris. Nick Norris began his career in the military as a graduate of both the United States Naval Academy and Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL (BUD/S) Class 247. Upon completion of SEAL training in 2004, Nick assumed progressively higher positions of leadership within Naval Special Warfare. His deployed roles included combat advisor to Iraqi and Afghan military units, Cross Functional Team Leader, and Ground Force Commander during combat operation in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Bill Mazur is a 25-year law enforcement veteran and retired in 2017 at the rank of Deputy Chief of Police. Bill holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Stockton University and a Master's Degree in Human Resources Training and Development in the Police Graduate Studies Program from Seton Hall University. Bill is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #256, and currently serves as a Master Instructor with the FBI National Academy Associates, in their Comprehensive Officer Resiliency Training Program. He also acts as a Liaison for the NJ State Resilience Program for law Enforcement. Additionally, Bill currently serves on the Wellness Committee for the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) as an advisor. Larissa Mason is a clinical expert in understanding and treating trauma. She is a professional instructor for NJ State and maintains a thriving clinical practice. Currently working with clients throughout the USA and overseas, Larissa Mason focuses on areas including neurodivergent learning and responses as well as complex trauma resiliency and recovery, for both the impacted individual as well as their partner and families. Focus on professional mental health and individual resiliency regarding law enforcement and first responder stressor is emphasized. She helps individuals and families understand and work through the stressors that challenge them so they may lead healthier and happier lives. Through her career, Ms. Mason was supervisor at an adult partial care program for the severely mentally ill where she created and implemented the first clinical trauma track as a way to expound on the connection between trauma and mental health and offer appropriate support. Ms. Mason then supervised the county wide sexual assault response program for Cape May County where she directed the county's response to interpersonal violence, both domestic violence and sexual assault. There she worked to create pediatric guidelines for responding to childhood survivors of abuse. Ms. Mason also taught clinical work on the graduate level for Rutgers University and is a published author in the Encyclopedia of Sexual Violence.
