Today at 1 PM ET on Steel News Live, Ann Vandersteel is joined by Chris Worrell, a Florida J6 defendant, cancer survivor, and Collier County resident whose life was upended after January 6.Chris says he went to Byron Donalds seeking leadership, accountability, and public action. Instead, he says he found silence, delay, and political calculation.Donalds' own office knew about Chris Worrell's case. Congressional casework identified Chris as a J6 defendant who had been denied medication, placed under house arrest, and who “never entered the Capitol.” Donalds' Deputy District Director, Mercedes Price Harry, worked the case, communicated about DOJ letters, BOP medical issues, and urgent concerns involving Chris's cancer and detention conditions.Chris says he campaigned hard for Byron Donalds. He was a fellow Floridian. He was a constituent. He believed Byron would fight for him.But Chris says Byron Donalds did not put him first.Today's episode asks the hard question Florida voters deserve answered:If Byron Donalds would not publicly fight for Chris Worrell — his own constituent, a Floridian, a supporter, a J6 defendant with cancer — why should anyone believe he is fit to govern the State of Florida?
In this episode, we are talking with professionals who work with children in Collier County. When children have been traumatized, these professionals help to shield them from further trauma.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of a landmark document called Nostra Aetate (translates as In Our Time) which was the result of Jewish and Catholic collaboration during the Second Vatican Council that ran from 1962 to 1965. It fundamentally changed the official Roman Catholic position on Judaism and spoke out openly against antisemitism. Now, 60 years later, the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County along with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Naples and Ave Maria University are presenting a two-day symposium bringing together a panel of distinguished theologians and professors from across North America to discuss the landmark document that changed 20 centuries of Catholic-Jewish relations – and it's importance in our time.
The League of Women Voters began as a national, nonpartisan nonprofit political organization that was founded in 1920, just a few months before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed women the right to vote. The Collier County chapter is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. One of their main information sources is Vote411.org. It's a one-stop shop for information about who and what will be on ballots for each election. We talk with their new President and CEO, and an alumna of the program to better understand what they do and the impact their programs can have.

My guest in today's episode #69 of The Nourishment Mindset podcast is the wonderful Dr. Anthony Daffner-Milos, a wonderfully compassionate, fabulously educated, humble, gentle and talented Doctor of Physical Therapy. (I know this as I'm a patient and have recommended him to plenty of people!) Dr. Anthony is the owner of ADM, a concierge PT practice with mobile service for local patients in Collier County, Florida and telehealth for those located elsewhere. We discuss how he discovered his calling into the profession, his love of learning and resulting numerous certifications — if the man were a master of languages he'd speak about 50! As well as his specialized and comprehensive training in The McKenzie Method, a modality that has helped me and my husband tremendously. We also get into common mistakes he sees people making and his recommendations for overcoming them. Tune in to learn about what to look for in a PT or potentially find a match in a healer. Please note I mispronounced his last name: it's MI-los, not Mee-los as I incorrectly said. Apologies!FINE READ-Seed Oil Scout is a great app and site that helps us avoid what Dr. Cate Shanahan refers to as The Hateful Eight, inflammatory seed and vegetable oils like soybean, canola, etc. I subscribe to their newsletter and learned a lot about the potential toxins hidden in our spice racks in their recent newsletter. It describes the two harmful substances used to sterilize spices — one of which is banned in Europe, and why you should think twice before buying a spice. The good news is that when you buy organic, you avoid these sterilizers. Check out the short article and let me know what you think!FINE FIND-Sometimes we need to take some time to rest and recharge during the day. This fine find, 20 Minute Power Nap by Paradigm Yoga is a 20 minute video that has saved me many times after a rough night of sleep or travel jet lag. The narrators voice is so soothing and in 20 minutes I come to feeling so much better.FINE RECIPE-Today's “recipe” is more of a welcome board or appetizer for entertaining (or full meal!). You can make in smaller quantities or decrease the selection for small groups. This newsletter photo shows our family's selection while in our shared home in Provence, France this summer. Chef Fletch is rightfully feeling extremely proud: notice the pestle sticking straight up in the green mortar? It's the first time he has ever made perfect garlic aioli, and aioli is a serious affair! We're so proud of our little foodie. From left to right, you'll see his aioli (email me for the recipe!), a delightful and simple heirloom tomato salad (seeds removed) drizzled with EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and balsamic glaze then topped with fresh basil and sel gris. Our main wooden platter there has grooves along the sides so we “framed” it with two kinds of olives (Nyons are black and Picholine are green; substitute here in the US). Then lined the bottom with rows of Comté, the most adored cheese in France by consumption (yum!) and cured sausage slices (wild boar). At the top there's a beautiful herbed chèvre (goat cheese) with rows of sliced baguette featuring duck liver mousse and three tapenades — tomato, black and green olive. To the right of the platter we have a very simply sliced cantaloupe drizzled with more EVOO and sel gris and some sardines, which are great protein and true fish oil sources (the stuff you might be swallowing in capsules is rancid; whole food wins again!). It is of course a rather large “apéro” and actually served as a complete dinner for five that evening. Bon appétit!Lastly, if you haven't bought The Nourishment Mindset book, what are you waiting for? It's all about what the French do seemingly effortlessly a it's part of their culture: the pleasures of the table. I also share my story of sickness and healing and serve up many practical tips and recipes for improving your health with real whole foods — all in a straight talkin' manner, of course. Thanks for reading Nourishment Mindset Podcast! When Governor Ron DeSantis announced he was using his emergency powers to have the State of Florida build a detention facility on a relatively unused airbase in Big Cypress National Preserve in Collier County the idea immediately drew criticisms, including the cost and the environmental impact. But there is another aspect of this camp and the name Alligator Alcatraz that has drawn another kind of criticism: echoes of racist language that bring to mind the trope of ‘alligator bait' that dates back to the late 1800s and the days of Jim Crow. We explore that history with a reporter from the Miami Herald and a Naples Rabbi whose recent sermon titled “A Fence Around Compassion” went viral on Facebook.

A white Cadillac, Circle K, and two internal investigations. In the fall of 2003, 23-year-old, Felipe Santos disappeared after a minor traffic accident in Naples, Florida. Three months later, 27-year-old Terrance Williams also vanished, leaving behind the white Cadillac he had just bought. There was only one connection between the two men, they had last been seen with Collier County Deputy Steven Calkins. Sponsors: Greenlight Start putting your kids on the right financial path. We're back after a very long hiatus with a new co-host and a new horrific case. In July 1985, a widowed tobacco heiress and her three children were preparing to leave for an errand when their Chevrolet Suburban exploded in their driveway, killing Margaret Benson and her son, Scott and severely injuring her daughter, Carol Lynn. Unraveling this case exposes the soft white underbelly of a wealthy yet dysfunctional family including dark family secrets, decades of manipulation, and a cancerous greed. When people see a law enforcement helicopter overhead, they often assume there's a crime in progress, but that's not always the case. The CCSO Aviation Unit performs a diverse variety of tasks to protect Collier County. In this episode, Lieutenant Dennis De Rienzo and Chief Pilot Ed Henderson explain how they do much more than locate bad guys – they battle fires, they find and save people, and they support and protect deputies on the ground. They also tell us how the speed and reach of our helicopters are essential to patrolling a county that is bigger than two U.S. states.
In a large-scale emergency, like a hurricane or wildfire, first responders need all the help they can get. That's why Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk is introducing the Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT. In this episode we look at how these citizen volunteers will be trained to protect themselves and their communities in the event of a disaster, and how that benefits everyone in Collier County.
A nationwide shortage of 9-1-1 dispatchers could mean longer wait times in an emergency. To solve this problem in Collier County, Sheriff Kevin Rambosk is thinking outside the box. In this episode, we'll explore the creative ways Sheriff Rambosk is working to find the next generation of 9-1-1 telecommunicators through CCSO's Public Safety Career Academy.
Today we wanted to share an episode from a little while back. We believe that it provides immense value and there are some new listeners, so we wanted to re-post it. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Sheriff Camrine Marceno of Lee County, FL. Sheriff Carmine Marceno was elected Lee County's 13th Sheriff on November 3, 2020. He was appointed Sheriff of Lee County in 2018 by then-Governor Rick Scott. Marceno began his law enforcement career in Suffolk County, New York before moving to Southwest Florida where he joined the Collier County Sheriff's Office. While with CCSO, he worked as a Patrol Deputy and was a member of numerous specialty units within the agency. He transitioned to a larger public liaison role in community policing, eventually serving as Executive Officer. He is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. In 2012 he was awarded the Collier County's Distinguished Public Service Award, given to the county's top public servant. Sheriff Marceno joined the Lee County Sheriff's Office in 2013, most recently serving as Undersheriff for more than two years. During that time, Sheriff Marceno assumed supervisory responsibilities for day-to-day operations as a member of Command Staff. Prior to his role as Undersheriff, he was a Captain, serving as the Executive Officer to Sheriff Mike Scott. In March 2017, Sheriff Carmine Marceno graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy Session 267. The intense 10-week program is by invitation-only for law enforcement managers nominated by their agency because of demonstrated leadership. The grueling session includes course study, specialized training and physical challenges. On December 19, 2019, Sheriff Carmine Marceno was awarded the 2019 “Outstanding Law Enforcement Executive” award from the Southwest Florida Police Chiefs Association. Sheriff Carmine Marceno is also a member of the Board of Directors with The Lee County Horizon Council. Sheriff Marceno talks about his journey of his career from New York and transitioning to Florida, standing for Law and Order, dealing with haters his position on proactivity, his thoughts on proper training and doing things the right way to succeed. This is our third show about nourishing kids inspired by an article in my French village's newsletter featuring the three chefs of the elementary school who strive to serve balanced, locally sourced, organic lunches with variety! (Previously, we aired episode 3, Kid Food, and episode 27, Let's Cook.) Warning if you watch the episode on YouTube: got Florida wet hair and just don't care! Here are links to example menus at the elementary school in Châteauneuf du Pape and my local school distract in Collier County. Please note the French menu is made with fresh ingredients by school chefs; our school processed “food” is delivered via truck and filled with preservatives, seed oils, glyphosated grains and Lord knows what else.Is it any wonder that you don't see wild animal behavior in French kids?!! The culture has an eating schedule focused on real food and is not snacking around the clock. These kids don't suffer from the blood sugar roller coaster nightmare that many a hangry American kid displays. It's almost like there's a nutrition connection with mood, hyperactivity, concentration and more!We then venture into one of the most important health books I've read, Pandora's Lunchbox: How Processed Food Took Over the American Meal, where author Melanie Warner details many of the horrors of our food system including cereal, the 5000+ unstudied GRAS “Generally Recognized as Safe” additives the ever effective FDA allows companies to self-regulate, dough conditioners and of course, seed oils. We then “tour” through the production of soybean oil with this warning: you may barf! And then wonder over to one of my favorite parenting books, Raising Happiness, by Dr. Christine Carter and specifically, chapter 10, “Eat Dinner Together.” Here Dr. Carter espouses the importance of family meals, which are “the most important science-based advice I will give you for raising happy kids… benefits are remarkable,” because they lead to better emotional stability, grades, mental and physical health. The Nourishment Mindset is not about taking food to extremes; rather, it's about finding your balance. Knowledge about real foods and the shitty stuff we allow in our food systems is power because you can then choose how you want to nourish yourself. My personal philosophy is to focus on making plenty of “health account deposits” and enjoy my occasional withdrawals such as the gator bites I had last weekend at my favorite restaurant in America, Capri Fish House! (Think sunny day, calm cove, feet in ocean, fresh seafood and white wine in hand while kids romp on the beach — my petit paradis.)Let me know what you think of this episode!
