High rents are forcing small businesses into tough choices like raising prices or changing location

While many costs have come down for small businesses, rents remain high and, in some cases are still rising, forcing many owners into some uncomfortable decisions. “Every time the rent goes up, we have to raise prices to keep up with the cost,” said Adelita Valentine, owner of HairFreek Barbers in Los Angeles. “But with the cost of living, it makes it difficult on our customers.” Other owners are choosing to be late on payments or seeking out new locations where the rent is lower. A few are pushing back against their landlords. Although inflation is easing, it remains a top concern for small businesses. According to Bank of America's internal data, rent payments per small business client rose 11% year-over-year in July. That's more than twice the increase for renting and owning a residence, a metric known as shelter, according to the government's monthly Consumer Price Index. That figure rose 5.1% in July. The rent for Valentine's barbershop rose to $4,000 in January from $3,600 in December, the fifth increase in the past eight years. She had to raise the price for her cuts from $35 to $40. Two months ago, she moved locations for a cheaper $3,200 rent, but her space is smaller now, and she sees fewer families coming in. Standing firm against a landlord sometimes works. Janna Rodriguez has run her home-based The Innovative Daycare Corp. in Freeport, New York, since 2018. When she first signed her lease, she paid $3,500, plus costs including landscaping and maintenance. In 2020, the pandemic began, and her landlord raised her rent to $3,800 and also made her start paying half of the homeowner's insurance. Last year, the landlord raised her rent to $4,100, plus the additional expenses. Rodriguez raised her prices for the first time, by $10 per child per week, to help offset the rising rent. This year, she successfully pushed back when the landlord wanted to raise the rent yet again. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

His latest book, Catastrophe Ethics: How to Choose Well in a World of Tough Choices, delves into moral decision-making in the context of climate change and other pressing ethical challenges.Travis chats with host Greg LeBlanc about his harrowing experience with opioid withdrawal following a motorcycle accident, historic societal shifts in opioid perception, and how much one's individual decision-making truly impacts structural problems like climate change or the healthcare system.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:How did we get to the place where we have conflicting attitudes about opioids?09:53: How did we get to the place where we have conflicting attitudes about opioids? Because some people seem to think that they are, worth giving out like candy, and some people seem to think that they're like the devil's magic or whatever. And that story is old. That story is 200 years old plus, and it involves basically North America's attitudes just swinging back and forth from one extreme to the other. Every once in a while, we're like, "Oh, we really need to take pain seriously. Let's take opiates all the time." And then it predictably leads to a drug overdose crisis, an addiction crisis. And so the politicians freak out, and they slam on all the brakes, and they introduce new legislation. And then the country gets scared, and medicine gets scared. And we talk about how terrible these drugs are. And then we withhold them for 50 years. And then everyone's like, "Hey, maybe we should take care of cancer patients who are dying." And we start using the drugs again, and so on. And so we've done that move since the 1800s.Risky handoffs in medication management16:03: When it comes to pain medicine, when it comes to addiction management, when it comes to managing all sorts of difficult-to-manage medications, those handoffs are some of the riskiest places because they require care, and our system is not set up for that care to be there. Basic moral structure is everywhere41:00: The main contribution that I wanted my book to make was to make clear that same basic moral structure, that we are contributing in very small ways to all sorts of goods and bads, good moral projects and bad moral projects, all the time. That basic puzzle is everywhere. If someone argues that individual behavior doesn't matter, why would anyone bother trying?33:44: Our actions have been decoupled from the consequences that make us worry. And so climate change is bad because it harms people. And so my classic moral brain says, okay, harm, that means don't do it. So, everything that I do that contributes to climate change, I'm like, okay, I shouldn't do that because climate change harms. But the thing is that the principle was don't cause harm, and your individual action doesn't cause harm. Your individual action does this other thing, which is it infinitesimally contributes to this massive, complex system that is so big and so complex, we can't really comprehend it. A trillion metric tons of greenhouse gasses accumulating in an atmosphere and cycling through a carbon cycle that is just unimaginably complex. And so there is no hurricane that is even a little bit worse because of what I did. That's just not how any of this works.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe Michael E. My most recent guest was Khara Croswaite Brindle. We talked about her book, Understanding Ruptured Mother-Daughter Relationships: Guiding the Adult Daughter's Healing Journey Through the Estrangement Energy Cycle. One point that came up was the ease with which we can judge other people's choices. This can happen in various situations, including estrangements, estate planning decisions, and succession planning in a family business. They share common pitfalls. First, so often, nothing good comes from these judgements.  Next, we don't know the whole story. Finally, as was so clear in my conversation with Khara, the fact that a choice was made never guarantees that it was an easy one for the person who made it. And not that it is easy to live with. In some circumstances, it will be best to explain the basis for the decision. Even if others disagree, there is an opportunity to understand.  In others, that isn't appropriate. Either way, the rest of us can try not to judge. Or, at least, we can keep our judgments to ourselves. Do you have comments or suggestions about a topic or guest? Governor Noem Reveals Tough Choices in Forthcoming Memoir

Real News Now Podcast

South Dakota's Governor, Kristi Noem, often mentioned as a likely vice-presidential nominee for previous President Donald Trump, willingly revealed in her forthcoming memoir difficult decisions she has had to make. These included the tough act of euthanizing one of her dogs, who proved to be more of a danger than a companion, and similarly a belligerent goat on her farm. The crux of sharing such personal accounts is to highlight her readiness to take on difficult tasks when necessary. Well-known in conservative circles, the 52-year-old Republican governor recounts these events, as an advance copy of the memoir reveals. Her memoir, soon to be published, holds the promise of offering insights into Noem's life and values, as a person who is unafraid of making tough decisions and standing by them, even when they appear harsh to others. In the memoir, Noem fondly mentions a wirehair pointer named Cricket. However, Cricket, barely a year old, turned out to have a temperament too aggressive to be tamed. Despite multiple attempts to train this pup, she proved to be a handful, even disrupting a hunting expedition by launching into an uncontrolled frenzy. She had introduced Cricket to other dogs during this hunting trip. The goal was simple - she was hoping Cricket could take cues from the other dogs and learn from them. However, the plan turned awry when the pup, filled with unprecedented excited energy, plunged into a flock of chickens, causing chaos. In Noem's words, it was akin to an 'experienced hunter' going rogue. Governor Noem's attempt to control the situation only led to Cricket lashing out. The dog turned around with ferocity and bit her. The pup's actions were indicative of a deep-seated aggression that Noem quickly realized posed a danger to anyone who approached her, deeming her a liability, especially in her role as a hunting dog. Faced with the grim reality of her dog's dangerous demeanor, Noem was left with the difficult decision of letting her go. Recall that for Noem, actions born out of necessity, however distasteful, are part and parcel of life, and true to her belief, she made the hard call. Noem narrates the saddening scene where she led Cricket to a gravel pit, firearm in hand. The act was difficult for her, but Noem pressed on, knowing that there was no other way forward if safety was to be assured. Tugging at the heartstrings of her readers, Noem details the moment when her daughter Kennedy came home, cluelessly looking around for Cricket. The timing of these incidents remains undisclosed in the memoir, but the emotional impact resonating from these stories is felt all the same. In another instance, the memoir mentions a male goat, which Noem describes as 'nasty and mean.' The goat's aggressive behavior, combined with its unpleasant, potent smell, became too much to bear when it started terrorizing Noem's children, chasing them relentlessly. Once again, faced with the goat's nuisance and the danger it posed to her children, Noem stepped in. She took a firm decision to euthanize the goat, much like she had Cricket. In Noem's mind, making tough calls, required for the safety of her family, proved she was a woman of action. However, the goat's ordeal did not end as swiftly as Cricket's. Upon firing the first shot, the goat survived, forcing Noem to make the drive back to her truck to retrieve another shell. With tangible urgency, she returned to the pit and completed her task. Noem concludes her account with a note of self-awareness, acknowledging that it may not be typical for a politician to share such stories. She seems to understand that her decisions, made from necessity, could position her as a politician who is not afraid to do necessary 'dirty-work.' The memoir states that a local construction crew witnessed the Governor in action, providing a sense of confirmation to the stories shared. The memoir, titled 'No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,' is set to be released next month. On social media, Noem spoke about these events, hinting at more such politically incorrect tales shared in her forthcoming book, much to the anticipation of her followers and critics alike. The governor illustrates her ability to be honest and upfront, the two qualities that may appeal to a conservative demographic. The resilient governor also took to the platform to address the recent media coverage ahead of her book release. She used her farm-life experiences to convey how hard decision-making is a norm in such a setting. Other instances, such as putting down their family horses, further cement her stance about the harsh realities and tough decisions that farm life calls for. If you're looking for a book that gives an honest portrayal of conservative, real-life stories often skipped in political dialogues, Noem encourages preorders of her memoir. Reflect Forward
A Guide to Navigating Tough Choices

Reflect Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2024 15:32

Navigating tough choices and the ability to make hard decisions swiftly and effectively separates the good leaders from the great ones. I've learned that decisiveness in leadership is not just about making decisions quickly; it's about making the right decisions under pressure, with limited information, and often, with significant consequences on the line. And that's the topic of this week's episode of Reflect Forward – how to simplify the process of navigating tough choices and making hard decisions. Why is being decisive so crucial for leaders? Decisiveness instills confidence in a team, drives forward momentum, and demonstrates a clear direction. It's about commitment to action despite uncertainties. According to a survey by McKinsey, 72% of senior executives believe bad strategic decisions either were about the same as, or even more frequent than, good ones, indicating a significant opportunity for improvement in leadership decision-making. Here are six practical tips to help leaders navigate the complex waters of tough decision-making: 1. Embrace a Structured Decision-Making Framework Implementing a structured framework can streamline the decision-making process. This might involve defining the problem clearly, identifying all possible solutions, weighing the pros and cons, and considering the impact of each option. The DECIDE Model, offered at the end of this write-up, provides a systematic approach, reducing the overwhelming nature of complex decisions. 2. Explore Different Viewpoints Diversity in thought and perspective can be a game-changer in decision-making. Encouraging input from a range of team members can uncover blind spots and introduce innovative solutions. This collaborative approach enriches the decision-making process and fosters a culture of inclusion and respect. 3. Prioritize Transparency and Communication Transparency in the decision-making process builds trust within the team. Explaining the 'why' behind decisions can mitigate resistance and garner support. Effective communication ensures that all team members are aligned and understand the rationale, which is crucial for smooth implementation. 4. Accept Imperfection and Be Prepared to Pivot No decision comes with a guarantee of perfection. Reevaluation and the willingness to pivot when new information becomes available or when circumstances change is a valuable trait in today's dynamic business environment. 5. Leverage Data and Insights In an era where data is queen, leveraging analytics and insights can provide a solid foundation for decision-making. Data-driven decisions tend to be more objective and can significantly reduce the ambiguity associated with tough choices. However, it's crucial to balance data with intuition and emotional intelligence. 6. Practice Self-Care When you are feeling stressed about making a tough decision, practice self-care. Get some sleep, eat well, exercise and meditate. All of these are proven to help you think more clearly and reduce stress. Incorporating these strategies can make the daunting task of navigating tough decisions more manageable. The goal is not to avoid difficult decisions but to become more adept at navigating them. As leaders hone these skills, they not only enhance their own effectiveness but also inspire confidence and resilience in their teams. The DECIDE Model stands for: D - Define the problem E - Establish the criteria C - Consider all the alternatives I - Identify the best alternative D - Develop and implement a plan of action E - Evaluate and monitor the solution Please consider ordering my book, The Ownership Mindset, on Amazon or Barnes and Noble Follow me on Instagram or LinkedIn. Roe v. Wade was overturned almost two years ago, and a lot has changed in terms of abortion choices in the United States. Some states have effectively banned abortion, while others have such confusing laws that it's difficult for the people who live there to know what their reproductive rights are.The post-Dobbs landscape hasn't just affected the care people can receive: It's also changed where physicians choose to work, especially if they're in states where they can be criminally prosecuted for performing abortions.Last month, the Idaho Coalition for Safe Healthcare published a report that found that 22% of ob-gyns have left the state since June of 2022 — a massive amount for a state that already has the fewest physicians per capita in the country. Ongoing research in Wisconsin has found that the Dobbs decision has affected where medical students choose to study, and has even dissuaded some from choosing obstetrics as a specialty.Joining Ira to talk about this are two ob-gyns from states with abortion restrictions: Dr. Sara Thomson, based in Boise, Idaho, and Dr. Abby Cutler, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.Transcript for this segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com Subscribe to this podcast. In this episode with bioethicist and moral philosopher Dr. Travis N. Rieder, we discuss his latest book Catastrophe Ethics, in which he explores how individuals can make morally decent choices in a world of confusing and often terrifying problems. We explore the morally exhausting and puzzling nature of modern life in which individual actions can often seem insignificant in the face of massive and complex systems. Rieder offers suggestions on how to overcome this sense of ‘moral dumbfounding' so that we can better align our actions with our values towards ethical living. Among the small and large individual actions that we discuss, Rieder places a special focus on the ethics of procreation — what he calls monumental ethics — and the degree of moral deliberation that is needed to arrive at the decision to have a biological child. We also discuss the dangers of utilitarian ethics, with a specific focus on Effective Altruism. In a world of often confusing and terrifying global problems, how should we make choices in our everyday lives? Does anything on the individual level really make a difference? In Catastrophe Ethics: How to Choose Well in a World of Tough Choices (Dutton, 2024), Travis Rieder tackles the moral philosophy puzzles that bedevil us. He explores vital ethical concepts from history and today and offers new ways to think about the “right” thing to do when the challenges we face are larger and more complex than ever before. Alongside a lively tour of traditional moral reasoning from thinkers like Plato, Mill, and Kant, Rieder posits new questions and exercises about the unique conundrums we now face, issues that can seem to transcend old-fashioned philosophical ideals. Should you drink water from a plastic bottle or not? Drive an electric car? When you learn about the horrors of factory farming, should you stop eating meat or other animal products? Do small commitments matter, or are we being manipulated into acting certain ways by corporations and media? These kinds of puzzles, Rieder explains, are everywhere now. And the tools most of us unthinkingly rely on to “do the right thing” are no longer enough. Principles like “do no harm” and “respect others” don't provide guidance in cases where our individual actions don't, by themselves, have any effect on others at all. We need new principles, with new justifications, in order to navigate this new world. In the face of consequential and complex crises, Rieder shares exactly how we can live a morally decent life. It's time to build our own catastrophe ethics. Learn more about your ad choices. To them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. — Galatians 2:5-6 CALL OUT: Call out today to 8 Men Baptized in Big Sandy, MN. I am excited about your big step to proclaim your new life in Christ. In conflict, we have choices, don't we? There is that moment of pause where we have the option to confront or dismiss. For example, I can recount many moments in "discussions" with my wife when I have a split second to decide whether I confront a particular issue or let it go. The issue is discerning which battle to fight and how vigorously I want to fight it. Have you been here? Maybe you're in the middle of a moment just like this today. This is the same decision Paul had to make regarding this issue. He had to make a choice. Was he going to dismiss the issue and build stronger alliances and allegiances with the influential leaders in the Jerusalem church and the originating apostles? Or was the matter at hand worth confronting and critical to stand against? In this case, Paul weighed the options. He weighed the threat's level, the message's value, and the importance of spiritual freedom for believers and decided that it was worth the fight and even his reputation. Therefore, he went all in. But Paul never perceived the vigor with which he would oppose the false teachers as a move to win an argument for himself. He knew what he believed and understood the Gospel message was justified by Christ and received by faith and not other addition to this Gospel. Yet he was going to fight vigorously for the faith and freedom of others because he understood that one wrong theological move would precipitate another until, one day, the Gospel was no longer the Gospel at all. In life, we will often face similar dilemmas: Ethical Dilemmas: Do we confront an ethical issue or overlook it? Conflict Dilemmas: Do we address the deeper issues or let them go? Injustice Dilemmas: Do we speak up to protect the rights of another, or do we take a pass? Authority Dilemmas: Do we challenge the actions of authorities whose policies and procedures conflict with our own? It's tough to know what to do sometimes, but if you have assessed the threat, the value of the message, prioritized freedom, and are willing to risk your reputation, then it's much easier to know when it's time to take a stand. #ConflictResolution #StandFirm #CourageousChoices #FaithfulDecisions #EthicalDilemmas ASK THIS: Reflecting on your own experiences, recall a time when you had to decide whether to confront a difficult situation or let it go. How did you approach that decision, and what were the outcomes? Consider a current conflict or ethical dilemma you're facing. How can the principles discussed in this devotional guide your decision-making process? What steps can you take to ensure that your response aligns with your values and priorities? DO THIS: Assess, value, prioritize, and risk it. PRAY THIS: God, grant me the wisdom to discern when to stand firm in confronting conflicts and when to extend grace in letting them go, all while prioritizing the values of truth, justice, and love in my actions. Amen. PLAY THIS: I Will Trust You.
